Politics and restrictions are killing this motorsport, just like how Nascar is dieing... This sport used to be about the innovation and engineering. All these limits are killing it...
@TennysonPesco7 жыл бұрын
This sport is still about the innovation and the engineering. I mean, a hybrid turbo V6 making as much power as a V8, V10 or V12 with much less fuel is quite innovative.

Question for Peter or Scarbs: Do you think the token system limited Honda's ability to catch up in the engine development race? Or was it a combination of other issues, such as not hiring experience from other F1 engine manufacturers?
@bosshunterman7 жыл бұрын
I think he clearly answers your question in the video: depends on what Mercedes and Ferrari would have risked without the token system in place compared to Honda. From the other side of the curtain we cannot see what kind of concepts/ideas the individual manufacturers have in store for the future.
@Bahamuttiamat7 жыл бұрын
I think not. People tend to scapegoat the token system for honda's poor engine performance. Looking at renault, they hardly spent any tokens this year but gain a notice bum in power post monaco/canada. In truth, honda underestimated the challenges of these P.U. Much like Ferrari in 2014, they focused too much on aero efficiency over power. The size zero philosophy, with the turbo placed with the V worked from a packaging standpoint but cause numerous heating problems. Also running a much smaller turbine @ 120k rpm wasn't able to create the desired power. They should be more competitive in 2017 but as mentioned by Scarbs; this also opens the door to mercedes as well. Historically mercedes has always created the strongest motor in f1.
@micheleabate1467 жыл бұрын
Historically? Today the power unit like the rest of the car is developed mostly by non german. There is no continuity in the Mercedes race history.
@Bahamuttiamat7 жыл бұрын
Michele Abate You're being shortsighted. All f1 teams acquire the very best, regardless of nationality. Redbull is austrian, is Christian Horner? Or much of the engineering team? HAAS is an American team but nothing is built in the US. This discussion isn't about nationality.
@Stoppahpowah7 жыл бұрын
Yes, a lot of teams have their headquarters located near Silverstone. I wonder why they end up hiring British staff...

I wonder how the engine manufacturers will handle the supply of engines.. give the teams a few spare engines? or just have a few spares lying around if something blows up? maybe give a schedule of when new engines are being build.. doubt we'll get an inside..
@BrianSu7 жыл бұрын
ohh he didn't mention wider tyres also puts more stress on the engines so higher pressures internally. And btw I am doubtful Mercedes can make great strides with their power unit because I don't think that much more can be gained from a 1.6L block.
@thomasvanasperen90977 жыл бұрын
question: is it very likely that the teams are actually using that 5% of extra fuel for the engines? or will it still be faster to drive with a small amount of fuel in the race and saving fuel? what could be the effects of that rule?
@marlongordonsjoberg88397 жыл бұрын
Probably depending on the new tyres i would guess, if they can handle being pushed more then you could benefit more from running a higher fuel mix.
@vdub58187 жыл бұрын
Thomas van Asperen keep in mind the car is going to be heavier and have more drag. The extra 5% fuel will likely mean nothing considering those factors.
@Antennenwels17 жыл бұрын
Remember they have to save the engine as well.
@Rottensteam7 жыл бұрын
Thomas van Asperen With the extra grip from the big tyres and downforce, they can accelerate sooner, brake later so they'll be on the throttle for longer periods and they'll have to push more drag, so the extra 5 kgs will certaintly be used.
@CraigOverend7 жыл бұрын
The extra grip from wider heavier wheels will also place more load on the engine and drivetrain.

And on the brakes(will be interesting to see how those tiny disks/calipers hold up).

True! Will be interesting to see which teams are able to manage the heat to get optimum tyre temp. I also wonder if we'll see more blown axles with the wider wheel aero and brake cooling requirements.

@TMJ327 жыл бұрын
The other teams could never catch up under the token system. Mercedes came with the best engine in 2014 and no one could do anything about it even in 2016 teams were still way behind because introducing improvements was so restricted. There is a natural ceiling of engine development they will hit as the engines mature. They need to let the suppliers get as close to that as possible and then they can re-introduce a token system or a freeze once they have 3 or 4 competitive engines.
@soundsfrench7 жыл бұрын
Let's not ignore the new controlling interest from 2017. Development could be something like; improve engine reliability by taking out some of the slower corners. Perhaps just leave three (left handlers)? Ease stresses on steering and suspension by banking the turns. Prevent ingress of damaging, abrasive materials after a run off into gravel traps by walling the track with concrete. This will also allow moving the crowd right up to the track edge and get them safely nearer the action. And for a stroke of genius, run the whole series calendar in just one country and save all the expensive logistic costs to divi up between the board of control members.
@CzornyLisek7 жыл бұрын
Engine reliability come from stop-start corners. Generally the lower engine is reving the better reliability. Because of reliability nobody is even going into 15 000 rev limit, most teams don't go above 12 000 because they don't want to blow engine. Also that's one of reasons why there are limitations on circuits designs. Like in to corner can't be faster than 120km/h, straights(slight curves are straights) can't be longer than 2km ect.
@soundsfrench7 жыл бұрын
I think you missed my point, Czorny. If the Yanks are controlling F1, they'll turn it into NASCAR. Americans don't understand complexity, finesse and aesthetics. Brute force, up close, in yer face is what they like and what they want is what they'll get.They won't pay to see a sport where the cars come into view and flash past in a blur every 90 seconds. They prefer to watch them go round and round and round and... NASCAR!
@soundsfrench7 жыл бұрын
Of course there are plenty of Americans that love F1 as much as anyone, but that doesn't mean that the generalisation is wrong, Michael. I can only speak in a general manner but as long as the majority are within the parameters of the statement, then it bears out. I don't have the facility to poll 320 million people to propose a more accurate statement, so what I offer is my opinion. I can't prove it, it can't be disproved because the evidence required to do either would be incomprehensible. Though, I might add, the most interesting and important detail to be reported from early testing is that the new regulations regarding down force, designed to make the cars go faster, will make cars harder to follow and overtaking more difficult. www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/mar/01/lewis-hamilton-f1-new-rules-barcelona-testing I appreciate that these regulations are introduced by the FIA but Liberty Media, the new Company that controls the media distribution of F1, is going to have some very persuasive influence on what direction the sport goes in, similar to that of SKY with EUAFA. So, I'm sorry if my generalisation misrepresents you personally, Michael. But it's already looking pretty solid as far as I can see.

They should have just changed how many tokens team can use. After first race, team that leads constructer`s championship would only get 1 token they can use during the year, and team that leads`s driver`s championship would get 1 token which can be used during the year. If Mercedes leads both, they would thus have 2 tokens that they can use when ever they want to. Team that is in second place would get 2+2 so Ferrari for example would now have 4 tokens they can use to catch up. Team that has least points would get most tokens, so Honda can improve their lawnmowers. Teams that don`t finish on points would get same amount of tokens as team that gets 1 point, but of course they still would not get points and money from that points finish. You would get more tokens after each race. Also i think less money your team uses, more money it should be rewarded for each point. This would make it possible for teams like Minardi to compete against bigger teams. If Minardi`s carpenters can make a miracle and finish on points even though they did not have any money to spend on upgrades, they would now be highly rewarded and they could improve their car so they can try to finish on points again. And if they manage to again finish on points, they could keep growing. But of course, it would still be fair for large teams as well, becouse if they start doing worse like Honda, they would now be ones that get most tokens. I think it would be really good marketing value for any car manufacturer to prove that they can make fastest car with as little money as possible. In modern day i think it is more valued if teams do a lot with less money. And we might be getting new Minardi again! We need a system where you get more help the worse you do. You still would want to do as well as possible, becouse every point is important to win championship. And of course, you still can develop and improve the car, you just don`t have extra tokens and you have to be more creative. This system would ensure that no team could dominate. And if team does dominate, who could say they don`t deserve it?

@Bravo1VE7 жыл бұрын
Ultimately they are still limited to the number of engines, so unless if the engine is a Honda then manufacturers are still going to make small incremental changes throughout the season. Ron Dennis really screwed Honda by not allowing other teams to get mileage on those, so unless if Honda achieves a miracle they will always be on their back foot development wise. It should make for an interesting season though.

Why would Merc make drastic changes to a winning formula from 2014, with their competition obviously so far behind. I think they will have been focusing on 2017's drivetrain and unfortunately don't see any change at the top of the constructors championship. Great info on these vlogs though, love them 👍

+Merto6 that's going to be key this year. But you gotta have a strong engine to push the car with all the drag that downforce creates.
@DimZ_F17 жыл бұрын
The only thing that can reduce costs, by controling them, is a budget-cap. Please don't imply we are stupid. And by saying that tokens reduce development spending, you are just doing that. Give a team any amount of money to spent and it will do just that. Freeze engine development and the teams will spent the whole budget in any other areas that they can find gains in. None of the teams make money from racing. They make money from exposure, advertising and branding opportunities that arise from competing in F1 and being seen from a worldwide audience for 63 days a year.
@richardchild60937 жыл бұрын
I do not understand the FIA's obsession with "street car relevance" and cost cutting. What do they care? If the intention is attract more factory teams from VW, GM, Vauxhall or whatever, what do costs matter then? How boring would that be anyway? It's teams like Force India, Haas, even Williams' RBR and McLaren (relative to Merc) that make the sport exciting. The FIA shouldn't even concern itself, necessarily with things like fuel efficiency....that's what Formula E is for... Better sound would be great, but better racing would better. We the fans aren't going to make a difference. What will make a difference is when drivers and teams start to pull up of F1. Alonso even said that he would retire if the cars stopped being fun to drive and that they were close to getting to that point. Hopefully, if engine reliability issues because of the new demands on the power units and the higher cornering speeds suggested for 2017 will cause a bit of a shakeup and we have more results like Spain and Malaysia with Merc finding a more evenly matched field of competitors. Hell, I wonder if we might even see Sauber or Manor get a podium! Doubtful, but one can hope!

Engines are limited in the instantaneous fuel flow, so there is a limit on how much power the engines can make. As engines improve, it is harder and harder to make more power. While certainly Mercedes could make their engine better, it is more likely that the other teams will gain more power than Mercedes.

The most important result was that Ferrari came up with an illegal power unit and used it for years and apart from Ferrari itself and FIA still nobody else knows what was illegal about that PU. Oh and of course being the FIA the penalty they gave Ferrari was a joke and all the results achieved with those illegal PUs still stand. The state of F1 in a nutshell basically. :-(
@ampm97717 жыл бұрын
Haha to hear that "Merc's PU was absolutely right in 2014" is utter rubbish.
