In this video I explain why I only use vintage chainsaws. I also show some of my vintage chainsaws including the following brands: MCculloch, Homelite, Pioneer and John Deere.

...I used to be a Husqvarna Tech for a local Husqvarna dealer...I loved working on saws(at first)..until they started replacing the simple, durable, time-proven saws with, at first, the "strato" saws..then the "Autotune" saws(which were also strato saws)..now, to be fair, the computerized tuning system didn't really give that much trouble..but.. I HATED those saws..still do..there were bearing failures and hot starting issues at first....and what I found is that often, the Autotune would "mask" other problems, like an air leak or a bad seal/bearing..it would try to compensate and keep the saw running..until it toasted the P&C..the older ones would simply quit when there was a problem like that..often before there was catastrophic failure..and then, customers would bring the saws back and want you to "tweak" or "adjust" the carburetor to make it start easier..then you had to tell them there were no adjustments...also, they were MUCH more time-consuming to work on..more plumbing, more wires, tighter spaces..and you had to remove the flywheel and jack around with other stuff just to change an ignition module...but the worst one to me, is that you CANNOT just buy a new carburetor, bolt it on in the field, and go..Nooooo..you have to PROGRAM it first, else it won't even work!.. :( Eventually, the Dealer(which was primarily an equipment rental company) had enough with an unprofitable headache of being a dealer(I had had enough, too), and dropped Husqvarna..and saws altogether...several other dealers around tried to recruit me, but I figured that was my cue to get away from that stuff..and I did...still enjoy messing with OLD saws when I have time, though... :)

The EPA has ruined so much stuff by trying to make unrealistic emission standards. Chainsaws, cars, trucks, small engines are just some of them. They are too complicated, very hard to work on, and require expensive diagnostic tools. I was very happy when I retired from working on that crap.

Dear Mr Obsolete , you and I think alike. I no longer have any new saws. Sold them and bought old saws with the money. I use all vintage saws for my firewood business. Some of my favorite homelites are xl925 , super easy, xl12, super 2, 240. I have several Mac 10 10s. A 605 and a few little gear beavers 🦫. A few old craftsman and a 245a poulan. A041 farm boss. I scan Facebook market place everyday looking for more saws. My oldest is a 1960 Clinton that I got running. ❤ love the old school stuff.

I have run Stihl chainsaws for the last 25 years, but recently bought a professional-grade Husqvarna 550 XP Mark II which I absolutely love in every way. It lives in my Jeep as I work in the Oregon mountains every week clearing roads. I'll let you know in 10 years if it's still running good, but from the history of this very old Swedish company, I'd say it will and then some.

Modern saws suffer from lack of long term parts supply. If your saw has the self tuning system, when it fails the parts will be too expensive or not available to make repairs viable. The other thing is that I wouldnt use the Husky oil, as it builds a lot of ash, which can ruin a saw just as easily as carbon. I would recommend running a 40 to 1 mix, as that is what most pro loggers use. 50 to one just isnt enough in hot weather and hard working conditions. Most all loggers in my area use Husky's, and rarely see a Stihl out in the woods so I would say your choice of saw is a good one.
@johnclarke6647
@johnclarke6647 2 жыл бұрын
The one thing you will note about Husky is they are lighter than a similar cc Stihl saw. I have wanted to get a 562 but cannot find one locally. I love my 455 Rancher and my 372 XP that I built last year. Most of my stable is orange and white but I do like the orange ones. Just can’t tote heavy saws, anymore. I am a service connected disabled veteran, USMC, Vietnam and age has caught up to me.

Been hooked on the old Mccullochs since I found my first PM10-10 in 1998. Bought it from a scrap yard for $2.50. Needed a bar and chain and spark plug. Put it to work immediately to clear trees from 16 acres I had just bought. My dad bought a 10-10A in 1970 and used it almost year round until the late 2000's when he accidentally put straight gas in it and seized it. Surprizingly, When I tore it down for him it had very little wear, just damaged piston and cylinder. Since it had a cast iron liner I could still have it bored oversize and put it back in use. Try to find a new saw now that can be bored oversize!

My pm610 is now fully operational. I put its bar and chain on it, yesterday. I had to wait around to get a McCulloch 20 inch bar for it. I thought it would run my standard 20 inch 3/8,.050,72 chain but it would not - to long. I had to get a 3/8, .050, 70 chain for it. The bar came from a well used PM610, so I had to clean up the rust and repaint it. I put two coats of grey primer, two coats of Black appliance epoxy and finally two coats of high temp flat black. It looks good but it took several days of work to get it looking nice. I will put a 20 Stihl scabbard on it, today, which I will paint MAC yellow. I have not cut anything with it, yet, but I will.

Go Team Homelite. Have more than enough but not all are currently running.😞 Have others too. Lot of projects. And you are right. The new stuff has a hard time being cost effective for anything except professional logging and high production commercial use. The rest of us get along with a lot less expensive older equipment. When you can have a 5:1 ratio of usable saws for a thousand bucks It don't take a genius to figure which program will guarantee you have a saw running.

One word about Echo Red Armor two cycle oil. It will really clean up your saw, internally, and it provides extra oil in the engine. However it has a couple of drawbacks. It makes the saw squeaky clean which increases pull over. Plus it just about doubles compression, which really increases compression. I put my ms 251 to bed last fall with Red Armor @50:1. Saturday, I tried to bring it out of storage and could not get it past the first compression. I never did get a full stroke pull on the starter rope. Today, I got tired of screwing with it. I barely got a full one foot pull on the starter rotate 60 degrees. I pulled the shroud and put it in the sun and got the cylinder an muffler over 80 degrees. I was then able to get it going. I let it run for five minutes and dumped the gas, replacing it with Stihl Moto Mix and recranked it. I let it run for five minutes and shut it off. I then waited two hours and recranked it and let it idle for 15 minutes to get any remaining Red Armor out of the saw. I the put it back in the shop until inthe morning to cool down overnight. The 251 has never been an easy saw to start but not a beast, either. The last couple of days it has been a beast. I will put up with Ultras dirtiness instead of something I cannot crank.

I have only used the Red Armor oil in just a couple of my saws so far. The POOLAN Wild Thing was the first, and I am using it as a test bed to see if it removes the carbon as advertised. I still need to run a couple more tanks through it before I check out the piston. This saw had the spark arrester screen plugged and a fair amount of carbon and ash on the piston crown, plus some minor scoring at the top of the bore, and just medium compression when I received it. So far the Red Armor has increased the compression, which is about normal now, and the top ring is clean as could be. The only other saws I have used it in are a couple of my Pro Mac 610's. These are not high compression saws, so I have not noticed any change when starting them. The only thing I have noticed so far is that this oil burns cleaner than anything I have used before. So I will be trying the oil in other saws as time goes bye, to see if it has the results that you have had.
@johnclarke6647

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 that 251 has always been a pita to start. It has always had more pull over than it should. A 45 cc saw should not be able to kick my butt, but this one does with RA in it if the temp is below 80 degrees. I am going to dump the Power Blend Gold out of it in the morning and refill it with Stihl Moto Mix. I have RA in all of my saws and have had no problems with the other saws, even in cold weather. There is something different about the 251. It has been used the least of just about all my saws, primarily because it is a pita to get going. It ran and started great until I got five tanks on it and then it started getting hard to pull over and has not got any better in the intervening five years. I have used it to cut some big limbs and some moderate size wood but it has no where near the time on it as ms ms 360 or440.

It is strange how one saw model can be great, and one that is nearly the same can be so terrible. I am working on a couple of Stihl 034's, and they are really terrible. Cheaply built, have excessive compression, which causes the cheap plastic starter dogs to break on a regular basis, and aren't that great of a performer either. My 031 is much better built, starts easily and even though it is of less displacement, performs as well.@@johnclarke6647

It was pretty. Nice weather, today, so I worked on the 610. It was filthy underneath the covers. I had to Ryan the gas tank out of its cover. I also found a problem. Some idiot had replaced the kill wire and left strands of wire sticking out of the spade plug on the on/off switch and it was touching the cylinder. I shortened the wire and recrimped the wire in the plug connector. I wrapped the end of the connector with electrical tape and bent it upwards, so it cannot contact the cylinder. No wonder it would not run. I got a new muffler on it and cleaned it up pretty good. I am covered in saw dust and old bar oil. The cylinder looks fine. I put new fuel line and filter in the tank. Am getting there but have a few more things to fix if the warm weather holds out.

Nice collection of saws. I am waiting on a piston for a PM700 I bought so I'm keen to get it together to see how it goes. I'm on the lookout for a P50/51 at a reasonable price but they are thin on the ground around here. I believe John Deere saws were made by Echo and are rock solid, I have a cs75vl that I can't believe the condition of it for a saw that was built in the 70's. It was great when saws brands had there own style and sounds, and you could recognise what it was without seeing it.

The Pro Mac 700,s are real performers as are the bigger Pioneers The John Deere saws were made by Remington, then Kioritz (ECHO), then Efco. Hey ! I think you have a valid and good point in what you say. I also belive the bearings are more likely not to have a leak....when fitted into those cast iron chassings...which the old ones has. Just a feeling i have...I could be wrong. But what about the Stihl 024 f.ecs. that has the nick name foreverlasting machine...and that too is cast iron product from the eightees. I have several old Jonsered...like the type 450, 455, 525, 510, 535...and most of them is still extremely reliable and all has almost same behavour pattern...and starts afther same amount of drags...on the starter rope. Axcuse my bad english. I half horwegian and swedish :-) The Partner saw you have ther...you say 2,4 HP...but is it not 2,4 kw ! ?...and aproxamatly 3,2 ....HP ...3...HP ? I have several of those too and specially the 540 Partner...is rear and mine is very good and behave excellent and with all its power. No hesitation...and the saw is maybe late 1970...but most likely from the eighteies. I also is very impresed by to old Stihl saws. Easy to work on...in many cases... and very reliable..Have 026 f.ecs. ..almost same as 024. Have 020 and 009 and 010. Oldies but very goodies ! Also the handles...does not bend and getting loose...afther and under use. Many of new ones ...are way to weak this way. Take care and saw well ! :-)

I have never seen a chainsaw with cast iron crankcases. All have been either aluminum or elektron, which is a magnesium alloy. The cases on the old saws just have more metal in them, and strengthening ribs for rigidity. Many new saws have plastic crankcases, and that is why they fail. My Partnes S-55 manual says it is 3.4 hp, and it is a real performer. I only have three Stihls, an 075-131cc, 051-89cc and the 031- 49cc They are harder to fix than my other saws, but were good for their era. The biggest problem with old Stihls is that no parts are available from Stihl to repair them. I have never owned a Jonsereds, but those that have them swear by them. I only have two Partners, the S--55-55cc and a P100-100cc. Collecting and using vintage saws is a great hobby ! Thanks for watching.

The John Deere saws were made by several different suppliers. The early saws were Remington's, the later ones are the Kioritz (Echo) saws and later on were Efco from Italy. The Kiorits-Echos, are well made and had some nice features other saw companies should have copied, and yes the are medium power saws, but will do a lot of work if you are not in a big hurry.

I also have a Homelite 150 automatic that I would include for a good clean running Super XL 58cc in blue and white. The EZ is in excellent condition except the carb has gone bad. I have a replacemt one coming. The 150 is a nice clean saw but has no spark. Since it is a blue one , it probably has points that need to be serviced. Both saws have excellent bars and nearly new chains. The 150 has a photo copy of the manual.Both have super compression. On my next video, at the end I will post a picture of the two saws.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 With the 58cc I believe you are looking for the auto oil with manual oil override version of the saw. The 54cc would be the original manual oil only XL-12. I do have a blue and white version of the 58cc auto oiling saw. I have two of them actually but only one is currently a good running saw. The starter cover is missing a lot of the paint but I can install a much cleaner looking starter cover from a saw of the same look and year. It still has most of the paint on it. I am currently repairing a simple oil leak but otherwise the saw runs flawless. If you let it sit with oil the oil will slowly leak out. I have to reseal a gasket. Do you have a bar length that you would prefer? I currently have a hard nose installed but I think it is an 18" bar. I do have some 20" bars but they do not look as good. Would you prefer hard nose or sprocket nose? I do not have any good 24" bars that I could install. I can take care of any repairs needed on the saws you have. You would probably know the answer to this. When my dad died in 1973 he had two chainsaws and I got both of them. One was an Homelite Zip, the old blue pos. It came with an 16 inch round nose bar, I. The other saw I don’t remember a lot about because it was stolen. The MAC was a full metal saw. I do remember the air filter cover was black. It was contemporary with the Zip, but it had an 18 inch bar on it. It was a bigger saw than the Zip. The air filter cover was black and had a pancake filter and did not run the full length of the top of the saw. My old man was cheap, so it was probably just good enough to do farm work with. I never could get it to run. It would pop, occasionally. What model does it sound like?

I have some f the new ones, too, but most of my saws are 30 years old in their design or production. My oldest is my Poulan S25DA, that I bought new in ‘85. It still runs great and will cut with any other 40cc class saw. And is a top handle saw. I wish I still had my fathers MAC 250 but someone stole it from me close to 40 years ago. I used to own a bevy of old Shreveport Poulans, all metal saws with just a glimmer of plastic parts and all had roller bearing cranks. I did run my fathers old Homelite Zip for years but finally traded it off in the mid 1980’s on anew Poulan. It was heavy but it started every time I wanted it to. Wish I had kept it.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 a saw is durable according to how you use it and maintain it. Balance and feel is up to the specific saw. I like pro saws but even some of them are nose heavy. I put a bar on the saw that makes it balance, however putting a longer bar on it can really make it nose heavy. I have 20 inch bars on most of my big saws, for that specific reason. Putting a 36 inch bar on my MS 660 makes it very nose heavy so I only put it on for specific jobs. Normally it has a 20 inch bar. I keep my 28 and 36 inch bars hanging up on the shop wall. Nothing made, today, is as durable and simple as things made 50 years ago, but neither are they as heavy, either. I grew up in the days of the 327 and 283 Chevrolets and I now drive a Dohc CRV Honda, but it does get close to 40 MPG on the highway. I will bet mechanics these days don’t even know what a dwell meter or timing light is - they use computers, instead. I still have both of mine.

not all the new saws have the auto tune or mtronic carbs they normally have a model that has a idle a high and a low jet screw. and one your right about the homeowner/farm and ranch saws they make them hard to work on but once you get into the pro saws they normally have magnesium crank cases and are faily easy to change out pistons and what not. and the new saws anti vibration is far better compared to the old ones which alot of the times vibrate the heck out of your hands. also they have alot more rpms compared to the old ones. that being said i love vintage chainsaws and they are alot of the times much better build quality but some of the new saws today are fantastic machines if you pay for a pro saw. i have a jonsered 70e from the late 70's that is a great chainsaw. i also have a stihl ms461 and its no comparison really on which is better.

The self tuning saws havent worked out very well in the commercial market, and that is why there are models that still have adjustable carbs. For me, buying a modern pro grade saw doesnt make sense, mainly because of the high price, and they also require special tools to work on them. My old saws are easy to work on in most cases, and rarely need any special tools to fix them. or any major repairs. I cut about 15 cords of wood each year for firewood and forest management. The McCulloch's that have anti vibe are real smooth running, and I can cut for hours with no problem. If I am using a saw like an XL 12, that doesnt have anti vibe, I just wear fellers gloves, which has a cushion in the fabric. If I had a new saw, I wouldnt be MR. OBSOLETE ! The new saws can run up to 14 grand, but when they are in a hard cut, the engine speed drops to around 9 grand, which is the same speed my vintage torquers run when in a hard cut, so I see no advantage in having one again. Take a look at my video (Mr. Obsolete Saves The Railroad) and you can see my old Stihl 051 cutting about 8500 and cuts just about as fast as a new saw in big wood, and I only have about $100 bucks in it. Tough to beat !

I am in your corner, I see a few smart a... comments about how much a mistake it is to desire vintage. I have a collection of Jonsered 49sp's, Homelite super XL's...several each and also a couple of Jonsered 2050's, a jonsered 910E and a couple of Jonsered 520sp's. The difference in design and build quality of the older saws..49 jonsereds and the Homelites is so obvious it is like night and day difference to modern saws. Looks to me like saw builds started going bonkers in the 80's, the 520sp is proof enough of that for me. Oddly the Jon2050 is a good build and will take hard use. A few simple tools is all it takes to work on the oldies and they stay in tune really well. I have good report for the Jon910E, it is a 1981 I bought new and milled lumber with it. The Jon 2050 is a 1994 and for a saw maligned by many for its clam shell design and abundant plastic I have nothing but praise for that saw....has cut mountains of firewood and NO problems. These "relatively newer Jons of the 80's and early 90's I mentioned are the time honored tried and proven designs common to the older vintage, that is the key to their success for me. THe only problem with vintage is the shrinking availability of parts. By the way...one brand of saw is still of the "old school" design, the Echos fill that bill. I just got a new (oh shocking right??) cs680 and it is easy to work on, design and build quality just like the old vintage saws. And sure enough, when you read around you find a lot of bad comments about how slow, under performing this saw is. Nope....ain't so folks. I swear it seems these days almost everybody thinks they have to have the baddest hot rod saw. The thing about a power saw is....any of them is a damn sight better than you being on the end of single or two man crosscut....give that a try for day and you'll find new appreciation for any power saw.

Your experience with the Jonsereds mirrors my experience with McCulloch's, long lasting great performers that have stood the test of time. I have never had a Jonsered saw, as they were not sold in my area, but like so many of the good saws, they have disappeared. Parts availability is the achilles heel of using old saws, but as you have found, the newer saws just are not that good. If I were in the position that I needed to buy a new saw, it would be an ECHO, for the same reasons that you lay out. The typical Stihl and Husky homeowner saws have plastic crankcases, the Echo is all metal. The ECHO equipment I have used over the years has been string trimmers, and they have been smooth, tough and durable. I inherited a nearly new top of the line Stihl string trimmer, and it is easy starting and powerful, but vibrates so bad that it can only be used for about 15 minutes before your hands go numb. Looking at youtube video's, this is normal. I did a complete teardown to find any loose or damaged parts, and found none. It is just a piece of poop. So all my old saws are still on the job, and the newer ones I mistakenly bought to replace them, all failed miserably. They all got recycled, and are probably part of a water pump on a Hyundai etc.

The older Homelites were really good, long lasting saws. I had a 330 a long time ago that had a real weird glitch. I would warm it up, then climb up a tree to do some in tree work, and if I was more than 30 feet up, the saw would not start. When I came down out of the tree, it would start on the first pull every time, go back up the tree, no start. I guess it was allergic to heights. As long as I stayed out of the trees, it performed fine, and for many years as well.

Sorry, I was wrong about Red Armor. My problems with the ms 251 were not the fault of Red Armor but caused by running Stihl Ultra init for five years. That filthy crap had loaded the combustion chamber and the top of the piston with fine grained carbon. I used Stihl carbon to remove it and now it cranks and runs great. One thing I have found out about JASO FD certified oils, like Red Armor, is - to get the FD certification they must run at 50:1 in any saw, regardless of what the manufacturer states is their correct gas to oil ratio. I am running RedArmor 50:1 in my PM 610.

I made the same mistake, as when I bought new Husky's and Stihl's to replace my McCulloch 610's, I used the recommended factory oils, at the 50-1 ratio, and the saws just wore out. My McCulloch's always ran with Bardahl VBA oil, and I would vary the mix ratio according to temperature and work load. I would use anywhere from 20-1 to 40-1. All of em have never been de-carboned, as that oil doesn't build carbon, and have never had to rebuild any of them either. They are all on the job still. They all get used every month all year long, most over 40 years. I am down to my last 9 cans, and when used up I will run the Red Armor.I will experiment with it to see what ratio mix I will use in them, but always at least 40 to1.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 I can understand that. My MAC’s are not worn out and old cylinders man need a different oil. My 610 runs fine with 50:1 and my 32-16 also runs fine with 50:1. My Poulan S25DA also runs fine with 50:1. I am running Ech Power Blend Gold, which is a JASO FD certified oil, just like Red Armor. All my Stihl and Husky saws are all running 50:1 FD oil. I am going to clean the cylinders on all saws that ran Stihl Ultra for a considerable time, like my ms 660, 440 and 360. @@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 try the Stihl Decarbon. Just remove plug, put piston near TDC and fill up combustion chamber with the Stihl product. I screwed in the plug just to keep it from running out. Let sit in combustion chamber for eight hours. I put mine in direct sunlight, so they would warm up. I topped them off every few hours. At the end of eight hours I dumped them in my oil drain pan. I then pulled the saw over about ten times. Some people rinse the cylinder out but I did not. Some of the Decarbon will get past the rings and end up in the crankcase. I tried to crank them but I could not get them going, so I just reassembled them and put them in the shop to dry out. The next day I cranked the 251 and the 241 the following day. They both ran great. They are both running Red Armor, now, and not that filthy Stihl Ultra. The Decarbon is relatively inexpensive. I bought a bottle several years ago but don’t remember what I paid for it. It contains enough to do lots of saws.

Running old saws is what I do. I have had modern saws, but I didn't like them much, and they wore out real quickly. I just do firewood and property management with my old saws, and they do a great job for me. Another reason I use old saws is they are easy to work on, are super reliable in most cases, and I collected most of my saws a long time ago, when they weren't collectible, and have little invested in them. An example--McCulloch pro Mac 700, saw was $12 with no bar or chain. I bought a new old stock 28" bar and chain, new fuel line, carb kit, plug, air filter and fuel filter, and have a total investment of $125. A new pro saw today would be around $1400, so I saved $1275. Performance wise, my old saw will match the performance of the new ones. Like you saw Because I Can ! Thanks for watching. Take a look at one of my older video's on the Pro Mac 700.

The fuel ratio I use depends on the saw. Saws that used 16:1, I run 20:1. Saws that used a 40:1 mix, I run at 32:1 others I run at 24:1. The oil I use isnt available anymore, but I have a stash of it still. Always use partial synthetic with a mineral base in older saws. Do not use full synthetic oils. A couple of oils I would use are Golden Spectro (very expensive) or Yamalube. These are very similar to the oil I use in my old saws, and use them in all my other 2 stroke applications.

Synthetic oil molecules are all the same size. Old saws have bigger clearances than modern saws, and they usually have some wear on the bore or piston. Mineral oil has molecules of all different sizes, that stay in the low spots, and they have the synthetic molecules mixed in, so you have lubrication with both the mineral and synthetic oils. With wide tolerances, the synthetic oil blows past the rings and piston, causing a seizure ,from lack of lubrication.. The number two failure on new saws is top end failure. You can get a cold seizure from running the saw too fast when cold, never happen in an old saw with wider tolerances.I am tempted to do a video on oils at some time.@@willp942

The piston slobbered with red armor and the rod and bearings had a nice coat of Red Armor. Red Armor stays in the engine instead of puking out the muffler. That is why I do not fear running my 50:1 mix in the 610. JASO FD certified oils have much better lubrication than other two cycle oils. I pulled the spark plug out of my ms 360 to see how it looked after a tank of Red Armor. The insulator was a beautiful chocolate brown, unlike the dark blackish color it had with Stihl Ultra. You are the only person who has said that the Stihls and Husky's are better than the old saws. Everyone else that has commented that how poor the new saws are, and personally the newer ones I have owned just wore out in short order. I am not talking about commecial saws, just the farm and home owner saws like I use. I know of no one who has been useing the same Stihl or Husky for over 40 years with no major repairs. My McCullochs have never needed any major repairs in over 40 years of use. I use them every month, all year long. It is nearly impossible to find parts for old Stihls and husky's . I know this for a fact, as I am trying to find a starter cup for A Stihl 051 with no luck, yet I can find starter parts for my Mac's easily and cheaply, even though McCulloch has been out of business since 1999. If you dont have an old saw, I would suggest getting one and find out how good they are.

Vintage saws are heavy, lack chain brakes, often worn out, parts are hard to find, great for fun but not for regular use now. You are much better advised to find a pro saw from the 1990's which have modern characteristics, are still strongly built, parts available and cheap and so on. If anything they are simpler to work on and repair. Nostalgia is nice, but thats all. Steam engines and solid fuel ranges are obsolete for a reason, same with saws.

What you are saying is the exact opposite of my experiences. All the 90's saws I have had simply wore out, parts were not readily available, if they were they were way too expensive, and also required special tools to work on them. Many of my old saws have been on the job for over 40 years, are easy to work on in most cases, and have never needed major repairs. My saws are used all year long, and have required just basic maintenence. You are right about one thing though, they are heavier, but that is mainly because they are built better. My saws are used as farm saws, not professionally, and so they are the right choice for me. Being a master mechanic, I can do all the necessary work myself. Also, since I have worked on lots of modern saws for customers, they are not easy to work on like you say. If I had modern saws on my channel, no one would watch ! Watch my next video, as I talk about this exact situation. So I will leave you with this, use what works best for you, and dont make judgements for others.

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 I'm simply giving others the benefit of my experience and hopefully helping them not get stitched up with an old nail. I stand by my views that a Husky 2 or 3 hundred series, or the Stihl 026 036 044 type saws were excellent. If as you say you were a 'master mechanic' you would have no problem overhauling one of these saws. Definitely do not encourage the use of saws without a chain brake. You do what you want yourself, but my advice to others is not to bother with that old junk.

Most people that collect old chainsaws dont use them like me. If they do a lot of wood work, they usually have a newer saw. It is interesting though that I receive quite a few comment how they like the old saws better. To each his own. As a master mechanic, I can appreciate good engineering compared to just slopping out overcomplicated stuff like so many saws today. Simplicity is the best form of engineering. I could do a complete overhaul of say a McCulloch Pro Mac 610 in 1/3 the time to do the same on a newer Husky or Stihl, and would require no special tools, and only a small amount of parts as well. Like my title say (Why I Use Nothing But Vintage Chainsaws), that doesnt mean everyone should use them. Most collectors are hobbyists and appreciate vintage equipment for what it is. I am currently working on a couple of 036's for a friend, and they are fairly straight forward, but still a lot more complicated to work on than most of my old saws.@@skipmole612
