Thanks everyone for watching and commenting. Here's some corrections based on your feedback: 1 - The Gen 4 and 5 horsepower was about 900 (to be more specific than ">700" at 4:09) 2 - The teams still build the engines, so Kyle Busch's engine blowing up was probably more on JGR/TRD than NASCAR. 3 - I did not mean to call the Gen 4 era safe, or safer than today. There were countless fatalities. The point I was trying to highlight was that the car's safety was underrated, and that many of the safety improvements were not car-specific (HANS device, SAFER barriers, better helmets and belts, etc.) Thanks again for watching and let me know if you have any other corrections!

gen 4 and 5 are my favorites, it feels like a lot of personality left the sport when they went to gen 6 and now it's even worse with gen 7. I used to watch every race, now I end up bored not even 5 minutes in. I think the strictness of the regulations was what killed my interest personally. at this point it's like watching a bunch of the same car with different stickers race each other, which is boring. the individuality of the drivers and teams was what made it interesting, and it feels like none is left.

And now the Gen 7 car is taking out veteran drivers like a hit list. It already took Kurt Busch away into retirement, who knows how long it’ll be before they take out more drivers and force them into retirement. Something has to be done but since NASCAR is NASCAR these days it’s highly unlikely they’ll make any safety changes to the Gen 7.

5:33 Correction: They had a little over 900hp back in 2014. Each year they cut the power down a little bit. 850hp, 800hp, 750hp, then 550hp. To put this in context: with 900hp at tracks like Kansas and Charlotte they could hit top speeds of 205mph, then they would have to brake down to 180mph to make the corner. With 550hp they would hit top speeds of 185mph and they wouldn't have to lift off the gas for the corner.

I'd argue that aero push started being an issue when Chevy switched to the Monte Carlo in '95. Watch the '94 and '95 Brickyard 400s, there's a pretty stark contrast. Ford going to the Taurus made it worse. Late '90's and early 2000's cars looked and sounded great, and we had a lot of great personalities in the sport. Overall racing quality though was higher in the '80's and early '90's, though high attrition rates could disguise that in the final results.

The tracks fans say suck now started sucking that generation, just watch Atlanta spring 2008 and not get bored, then watch Atlanta spring 2007, it's a day and night difference! 1.5 cookie cutters and 2 mile ovals got unbearable, Phoenix 2 configurations back with the COT sucked, only the short tracks and Daytona and Talladega were consistently entertaining, even Darlington suffered because of a repave and tire wear was not even a factor, once the track started wearing in did it get fun again, and for the most part the gen 6 chassis was the same COT chassis with a much better looking body on it, that being said I miss the Gen 6 because at least it could put on a good show on the short tracks and road courses! Gen 4 body, Gen 5 safety, different aero packages for different course types (with STRONG limits on dirty air creation to keep the pack racing alive), keep the 5 speed but make it a dogbox H-pattern, allow independent rear, but also allow straight axle fronts, and allow the engine to be anywhere ahead of the centerline of the car with the rules saying the driver's feet can't be past the front of it(probably dictate a minimum of 48% front weight distribution). Then ditch the 18-inch centerlocks. I'm not saying we need 15s, but 16s or 17s at most to allow for bigger brakes for the road courses, or maybe different-sized wheels for road courses and ovals to prevent the high-speed spins resulting in flats. 18s on road courses, 16s on ovals? IDK, it'd depend on testing. I'd also allow lighter overall weight cars, too. Something like the 80s/90s era IMSA 6.0L's 2700lbs minimum weight. And before I forget, keep the restrictor plates for lower classes of NASCAR IE the Formula 2 or 3 equivalent. Restrictors have no place on a fast race car. Better yet, f you want to align them with other similar oval car series like the grassroots scene, just lower the displacement to a rounded 350ci. Though if you REALLY wanna get wild, have an outlaw 410ci NASCAR class, as well. Maybe that's how I'd run NASCAR classes... With separate small, medium, and large engines. I'd also allow SOHC with VVT and whatnot, but probably keep it to either 2 or 3 valves, no 4 or 5-valve junk.

the racing on intermediate tracks has been the best in nascars history i think, once they get the shorter tracks dialed in, we are in for a great shows every race.
@mlwilliam213 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. It’s been better than the 6, but lead changes don’t equal better racing. What was great about the gen 4 was that if the four best cars started the race with one in 4th place, one in 12th, one in 17th, and one in 24th, you knew that they were gonna meet at the front and sort it out. Now we see a dominant car have a pit road error, go back to 22nd and just get stuck there. They’re just to reliant on clean air. To be fair though, once they started coil binding and things like that to seal the car to the track the racing went to hell. This started in 05-06. It’s not a coincidence that that’s when the ratings started to drop. Racing is just better when it’s about mechanical grip because every car in the field can have mechanical grip, only one can have clean air.

The Lack of Ground Clearance at the Front of the Car and the Quarter Panel being also sealed isnt helping in Cars Passing each other and along with the Spoiler Height too isnt helping. Now its time NASCAR go back to 900 HP once they go Hybrid and get rid of the Tapered Spacer
@turbo_marc Жыл бұрын
If they go hybrid their fans will rip them to shreds for whatever reason.
@punyhunk8686 Жыл бұрын
Nah, there's actually quite a bit of ground clearance on the front splitter. It's like a GT3 bumper, it's not like the gen 5/6 splitter where it's always nearly touching the ground. It actually has lots of ground clearance to bring air back to the rear diffuser, which is still better than a splitter forcing air to go around the entire body of the car instead of letting it flow under the car. There is still dirty air from this, but the actual wake of air coming from the car itself is much more narrow than the previously mentioned gen 5/6 cars.
@camaroboy1968ss Жыл бұрын
@@punyhunk8686 air going under the car is how the new cup car makes downforce, the belly pan on the cup car is made to channel air back to the rear diffuser. Air going over the car is not as big of factor. When NASCAR was just recently testing new spoiler heights, there really wasn't any difference until they practically pulled the spoiler off the car before the driver actually felt it. I agree the dirty air is smaller than the older cars. I think the Gen 4 cars even had a lot of it as well that was covered up by the just how hard the cars were to drive. Its a good reason why the cars need more horsepower. Either that or they need to run a narrower tire.

@chrisjurich94714 ай бұрын
The drop in horsepower is mostly to make cost of manufacturing lower for new manufacturers to potentially enter the sport (Honda). They have repeatedly tested with higher horsepower packages but not seen better racing product. Unlike previous iterations, the next gen has a wider wheel meaning they get much better grip than previous generations. As a result, there is less slipping and sliding at tracks than in previous generations. Higher horsepower alone is not believed to fix this issue.

The Gen 7 Suspension is pretty durable, cars are bouncing off walls left and right, and able to continue, a Gen 4 5 or 6 isn't doing that. Yes the Early Gen 7 had weak toe links, but they have since been beefed up. Not sure why you even bothered to put Kyle Bush blowing up under caution, that's and engine builder problem, not NASCAR. Also the car has been improved safety wise since last year, the front and rear subframe mounts have been purposefully made weaker to absorb more impact.

Damn, 6 speed h pattern transmission would be really useless in most of the races as some track’s require drivers to downshift or not even stay in their highest gear for a long time. The only way this many gears would be useful is on the superspeedway tracks like dega and daytona. Changing the hp to 900 is a good choice, but also raises safety concerns as tracks like dega and daytona have shown us how that amount of hp + drafting can really create a racing hazard to fans and the drivers. Best you can do with the hp would be 800 which creates better racing and makes it safer for spectators and drivers. The RPM limit would need to be scaled back to accommodate that 6 speed and tracks that make you shift as fast as you can to the final gear (martinsville, bristol, etc.). Your idea is really interesting and can probably provide better racing, but its mainly best suited for Superspeedway racing and some intermediate racing. Short track racing with your car idea is basically impossible and just puts more labor on the mechanics and setup specialists and makes the cars powerhouse redundant. Still a solid idea though.👍

Not only are the absorbant crumple zones safer but theyre also more entertaining in two ways imo. Impacts look more spectacular and cause more attrition. I find it pointless to have a 500 mile race if there is no attrition, there is no unpredictability and exciting surprises. And the playoffs make attrition far less important. In the 90s youd have huge point swings at the top. I mostly just watch f1 now because while it has similar issues with far less attrition, the first 20 laps are just as important as the last 20. The problem is the horse power and the non existing crunching if the cars bent the drivers would be fine. The racing at the big tracks sucks because they took off so much horse power everyone has to use the draft to keep up so they can't go around anyone without help and if you do try it you need at least 6 to 10 cars to do it. The intermediate tracks are great because of the current engine setup for the 1.5 mile tracks. RC tracks I think if nascar is going to race on them make sure the cars are built for it, nascar has a ton of road races on tracks designed for IndyCar and F1. The short tracks same as the restrictor plates we need more HP! And finally everyone wants it no stage yellows I think that'll do something hopefully... Whoever the president of nascar is we need to replace him I'm sure he's a nice guy but he sucks at controlling an entire motorsport. I feel like NASCAR has made a major shift by taking more input from the teams regarding rules changes and car designs. Previously, NASCAR was very much a dictatorship, their way or the highway, and if you didn't like it you didn't have to race. By listening to the team owners and prioritizing costs over everything else, they've created a car that no one is really satisfied with. The racers will always figure out a way to race, and if a team runs out of money another will replace it. NASCAR got spooked by a bunch of the owners crying poor but I think it was more they were crying wolf. I agree that the 92-07 cars were probably ideal, although the last few years they got pretty wacky with the distorted bodies. The COT was the reaction to Earnhardt's crash and was much safer but unfortunately it was cosmetically awful. I don't think it's coincidence that the steep decline coincided with the COT. The current car is more reflective of modern technology and their road car counterparts, but not really optimized for oval track racing. I think there should be more HP and more opportunity for innovation.

Very late to this, but teams still supply their own engines, so Kyle blowing up at Darlington wasn’t completely directly caused by the Next Gen car

I really hope that they do make the gen 7 better. I think there is potential, but it’s it a lot of snags so nice it’s been on the track.

Yeah......I don't watch NASCAR anymore......cause my guys leaving......the new cars.......the new courses.....yeah its not the same anymore.......so I'm in F1 now. and I miss the Gen 5th and 6th gen. 😢

I miss the old cars simply for the fact they could flip. When they put an end to that the crashes lost some fun and lets be real 95% of us watch for the crashes. Its wild the older cars had more extravagant crashes but were safer. But when a car flips it loses a lot of energy so it does makes some sense.

ANYTIME I've discussed NASCAR with motor racing fans(mostly indycar/F1 fans) it's always about the whole Stage racing stuff. Add that with the whole goddamn championship points chase game; threw out tradition for sure

Y'know, if they just the wing version semi-active so that when the car spins around the spoiler angles down at the back to prevent a flip, the COT w/wing would be the peak.

I think the demise of nascar was due to them removing the various curves, left _and_ right turns and straights ("straight aways") . I mean, I don't think there is a racing body that promotes racing on the same tracks as other events with nascar stock card. It would be interesting. On the oval track, you realize the cars and drivers never reach their full potential. Sure the Nascar we have to day is very difficult, but that's partly because it's the same repetitive maneuvers, requiring the utmost consistency and precision, but also requires unwavering focus and last but not least physical, mental and emotional (no road rage, no unsafe maneuvers) health.

NASCAR should ditch the gen 7 car and finally run the road course only series they were close to in the 80's, they should just run Xfinity cars in Cup but with more power.

In the last generation that we have so far, they have tried to make him too much like street cars. You barely tag the wall and knock the rear and I have alignment on the rear or barely touch the front and not the front and out from under. Standard rack and pinion was not made for this amount of pressure, and 30° banking at 200 miles an hour. NASCAR has obviously forgotten who their fans are, just like Bud Light.

The cars in NASCAR these days have zero emotion… They don’t move up & down, they don’t slide around, there’s not enough throttle control in the corners. They just go round in circles, completely stiff & dead.
@shawnconder4984 Жыл бұрын
I'll say one of the biggest helps this current car can get is put some more grunt back in the motors. If these were running the 900 horsepower monsters from the Gen 4 era, then maybe this dirty air b.s. would all go away because they'd be able to pull out and pass. It would also do away with another detriment this car has, and that's shifting. How effectively can you race when you are constantly having to take one hand off the steering wheel and shift while flying around an oval at 180 mph.

NG car is the best car in terms of 1.5+ racing since the gen 4 imo, more hp would be great, and would definitely help the short track product as well. Also engines are still very well made by the teams and not provided by NASCAR, so not so different from what it was before.
@Dre2Dee2 Жыл бұрын
I feel like the car issue is (and I could be wrong on this), are from Ford/Chevy, etc The nascar cars of old did kind of look like the cars at the dealership, but that was more incidental. They're race cars, and sometimes wasn't always easy to tell who built what car in terms of car brand These new cars, it's very clear who built what just from a glance. Ford logo is prominent, has a Ford "look", looks just like the cars I see at the dealership! Oh cool, I could buy that! But as a race car? AWFUL! The priority has been on ADVERTISING the brands of the makers with the cars, not making a good race IMO

Haven't watched a race in years, so a lot of this is news to me. So essentially, NASCAR is becoming like how IROC was by mandating the use of cookie-cutter components for the car bodies and suspensions? I wonder how long it'll be before they go all the way and do the same with engines... Probably not too long before they ultimately suffer the same ultimate fate as IROC, I'd wager.
@PaperBanjo643 ай бұрын
Yeah NASCAR has sucked massively since the next gen car, I pretty much gave up on it after a year and a half of denial, 2022 was somewhat fun season at first but as the season went on the crappy ass quality (or lack thereof) started showing more and more, the better tracks race worse and the worse tracks race better, and I HATE 1.5 mile cookie cutters! I liked short tracks and road courses and the next gen sucks so bad on them I have hardly any desire to watch, they even found a way to fuck up the Superspeedways! A car that's only good on a very specific track type I hate that races bad on short tracks and road courses just don't appeal to me...and yet they say "oH bUt ThE rOaD cOuRsEs aPpEaL tO tHe YoUnGeR fAnS!" No they don't! Not if these "YoUnGeR fAnS" watch IndyCars or F1 (which I've fully switched to) and know other series put on much better racing product on them than next gen cars do...the thing that scares me is really young fans that started watching with the next gen cars who never saw a good race at Martinsville with previous generations of cars probably love 1.5s and hate short tracks for being slow and boring...I honestly don't see NASCAR ever fixing the next gen short track/road course package because they refuse to either add horsepower or actually test with an old style rear end gear, so they telling Goodyear to try and create high deg tires instead, which the wide grippy tires are a major part of why next gen races so badly
@SlaytonRider Жыл бұрын
When the gen 7 is good is great look at many of the 1.5 mile races and the super speedway racing is decent but man the short track package is ass maybe horsepower could fix that maybe it’s more complicated but besides this years Richmond race short tracks have been ass

To be fair, you're probably better off with European NASCAR. Theres no playoffs, not entirely sure about rules with BHP and other rules that makes no genuine sense. Battles tend to happen a lot if done right.
