The fun thing about old school cards like this is that they sorta told a "story"... the problem was that rarely was it a "story" worth telling. The less quippy thing to say would be that these kind of cards were too laser focused on telling one very specific "story". I'm honestly a little surprised SotP is flexible enough to even allow the summoning of any monster within a criteria, as opposed to ONLY being able to summon by name the two monsters designed for its archetype.

The thing needed a field spell or retrain with an effect where the LV2 zombie monsters summoned for a boost, or maybe make level 2 Gemini zombie monsters that would have legitimately good effects. Something as strong as a draw 1 effect or deal 1,500 damage to the opponent for each individual one to even have a chance. You’d still need a heck of a lot more to make the deck even remotely work, but that would at least be a start for damage output or card economy.

Until I saw that episode in Gx, I didn't even know what the Sarcophagi did. And honestly, if this guy was in the OG Yugioh Anime... he'd be a legit Mid-Tier Boss Monster for duelists. Not something Yugi, Joey, and Kaiba can't handle, but something for them to face as just another adversary that takes more than a few turns to really showcase. Like, I could see someone attempt to use this in the Battle City Tournament, but lose to someone like Weevil, Rex, Mako, or even Espa Roba mainly because they have easy counters and can plan ahead like that.

That's basically what happened. Poor guy was the most pathetic of the villain squad of GX season 1, and the main character outright had to go easy on him for him to have a chance. I feel people forget about this because many players didn't start when it was released, and of course because of how many Egyptian themed cards there were, especially at the time. Its kind of a shame because the idea of setting up something like this is really neat, and had you been able to special summon smaller monsters every turn through the initial trap card and then every turn with the new one before the eventual final boss monster, along with having some sort of effect that happens if your opponent destroys them, you could potentially have a deck that's worth devoting a strategy to.

You know, with some legacy support of its own, it can become something decent. I can already imagine some field spell that would make the Sarcophagus cards and The Spirit of the Pharaoh immune from destruction. Heres my idea: Field Spell - *Domain of the Pharaoh:* As long as this card remains on the field, any Spell/Trap that has "Sarcophagus" in its name cannot be destroyed or negated except by its own effect. If "Spirit of the Pharaoh" was sent from the field to the graveyard, you can return up to three Spell/Traps with "Sarcophagus" in their name from the Graveyard to your hand. Once per turn, if a face up "Spirit of the Pharoh" would be destroyed (either by battle or card effect) you can tribute a level 2 or lower zombie type monster you control to negate that battle or effect.

It could make an idea for a pretty sick deck if it was centered on Gemini monsters. I’m picturing a field spell that gives all in-archetype monsters their Gemini effects. Question: Would "The First Sarcophagus" and "Destiny Board" be viable and/or broken if you could activate them from the deck? Seems like the best case scenario for those cards is not so much to build a deck around them, but rather just have them do their thing while you're playing your deck normally. Furthermore, the quicker you activate them (IE; turn one from the deck), the quicker the spell cards they need get cleared out of your deck so you don't have to draw into them (not the greatest form of deck thinning but if you're playing these two cards, you ought to take what you can get lol).

I think about this card every time you put out a new episode of Weird Yugioh Effects!

To be fair: Even if it was NEVER good enough to actually see some play - it is worth remembering it, though! It's one of those cards requiring a specific deck build just to get them out ... but then lose either way, because every decent crush or beatstick terminates your bossmonster without challenging your opponent. It gotta be placed underneath Mokey Mokey or my favorite one: The Great Moth Deck! :D Also the Animé proved self-awareness implimenting it and making on of the most hilarious GX episodes ever possible xD

I think I've been cursed by this card, there hasn't been a single week for almost 8 months where I wouldn't have seen this card... and now even you, on friday... almost a week without him passed. Great video anyways, made me cry

Personal story: So back when I was like 8 the first card for this I got was Second Sarcophagus and then later Third Sarcophagus. I had no idea what they built to but I was super curious I was told I needed the First Sarcophagus to use them. It took a year or two but then I got it. I saw it summoned Spirit of the Pharaoh. My thoughts being "okay this monster must be fucking badass if it's THIS hard to summon. Perhaps it's for the Egyptian Gods or the Pyramid of Light/Sphinx cards." Then when I was like 13/14 I FINALLY got Spirit of the Pharaoh in a random booster pack on sale. I was so happy, but then I saw what it did and was like "okay... How many combos can I use this with if it's level 2 normal zombies?" The answer being almost none. Unless you play this with skull servant it's useless, and even then it's huge maybe. I still have them mostly because the cards look cool, but I wish it's effect was slightly better. Like even just any normal zombie or level 4 and under or brings them back every turn would be fine. Any of those could make this card scary in theory. But nope.

The last actual time when i saw spirit of the pharaoh was in the gx episode in which appears, around 2007/8.

I forgot about Clown Zombie... I have been considering making a Goat Format deck with Spirit of The Pharaoh :-)

I have only heard of it in TheDuelLogs' most popular video: Top Ten Terrible Boss Monsters. It was number one. I wanna somehow think it will end up like Grinder Golem.

This makes me ponder; Could Konami actually make this kind of archetype actually be good? Something like Destiny Board or The First Sarcophagus where you have these brick Spell Cards that do nothing while waiting for their Continuous Trap to put them in play. How do you fix this to be competitively viable? Destiny Board wins the duel and is still not good enough for even a rogue competitive strategy. What would this kind of archetype need to do? Monsters that prevent your back row from being targeted or destroyed?

The problem with this is that inherently if you have a bunch of cards that need to activate sequentially to do anything then no matter how good the end result is you have a bunch of dead cards and cards that can't be activated on their own. The only way to make that viable would be for that archetype to have the capacity to stun ur opponent so well that they can't kill u instantly, and if you do that you've created stun cards good enough to just be played on their own and nobody would play the ending cards.

Would probably need a unique or new effect that prevents any sort of counterplay outside of a very narrow window like the same turn it activates or can only be countered indirectly through things chaining to its owner's own card effects.

This actually got support in Speed Duel via a Skill Card. And it's not that bad either.
