@@thatman666 the TCG had various changes from Konami, whether arbitrary or for balance, and the anime reflected some of those changes impossible to say for certain, but considering baphomet's time of release (post-tribute summoning, pre-jinzo), atk/def and effect, making it level 5 was likely an attempt at balance

@@AztecCroc It's not the worst case of Konami localization by any means but it is a silly one, when all the Phantom Beast monsters get released all at the same time and they actually had known about the Gazelle ruling to mention it (unlike a lot of Archfiend cards where you just kinda had to know) but they still didn't try and figure out a way to name the archetype to not need to add an "And Gazelle." "of Mythical Beast" or "Mythical Beasts" would have been ways to dodge Cerberus. Then again this is the same era where Konami ended up making "lswarm" an archetype just because they felt that they NEEDED to rename "Inverz" and that actively caused rulings problems with the whole Rainbow Dragon thing.

Also Amazon of the Sea didn't come to the TCG til 2008, and the first Amazoness cards printed as Amazoness rather than as Amazon were printed in 2005 (though some printed in the *same* set as them were labelled as Amazon still). It's The Unfriendly Amazon's fault that they weren't able to *stay* changed to Amazon in the TCG (it was released in 2003). Of The Unfriendly Amazon is Ally-Killing Lady Knight in the OCG so it is still a bit of a localization flub.

i know that archetype is one of my favorite, their design i find them cool and the way it was intented (sending monsters to the grave and those monsters give buffs to the ones on the field) was intersting to me, i wish they made more support and make them good, always saw them as cool in concept and i wish the expanded upon the "while this card is in the graveyard" thing of cross wings giving a constant buff

These cards are a barely coherent archetype that gives itself mediocre atk boosts to maybe kill a single monster in battle

I actually have made custom support for them long ago,but that support was mostly for Rock lizard ,and main archetype for that was called simply "Rock",based on sturdy Pokemons(not only rock-types).Main themes was destroying your own cards and other-putting them on bottom of your deck as a cost.Then, there were that trap that changes opponent's effects of some cards into"now that card effect becomes:your opponent(meaning the player who activated this card) selects and destroys a no. of cards on their field" That went well with Rock lizard,and for the rest of that "Rock" archetype there was trap which effect depended on no. of archetype's no. of monsters on bottom of your deck.There were other spells/traps also....

A nice, simple archetype at a time when cards were getting way too complicated. I remember running some weird variants of this deck, didn't have quite enough support to come together though. Cross-Wing and Thunder-Pegasus had such fun effects. And Rock-Lizard could be pretty devastating once in a blue moon.

I do remember Phantom Beasts. The last time I was thinking of them was probably a couple of months ago when I wanted to build the deck in World Championship 2011 and noticed most of the cards were not in the game. Only card I have played IRL of the archetype is Horn of the Phantom Beast, in my Jawsman deck (it was centered in Frogs, Fenrir and Sea Lancer, with one Jawsman as a joke).

I got Rock lizard many years ago and thought it was really cool so I've always wanted to make a phantom beast deck for nostalgic fun duels. Basically i play a whole ton of traps, 3 solemn judgment, 3 storming mirror force, 3 quaking mirror force, 3 lost wind, 3 rivalry of warlords, 3 Horn of the phantom beast, starlight road. etc. i play 3 tenki, reborn, and feather duster for spells. I play 2 rock lizard, 3 wild horn, 3 cross wing, 2 pegasus, 1 Fire fist bear and 3 beast king barbaros

Apart from Gazelle, Berfomet and Chimera being Yugi cards, the Phantom Beasts were adapted from the almost entirely GX Animé-exclusive White Night cards run by The Chazz! Not all of them were exclusive, of course, Dragon (who looks like a frozen Red-Eyes Black Dragon sporting Blue-Eyes White Dragon's Lv and stats) and Queen, which Alexis played, did get releases! I run White Night Dragon in my Red-Eyes cuz 3000 ATK, basically! Same reason, pretty much, why I run Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon and Red Dragon Archfiend, really... and Scarlight, of course! Red Nova Dragon jus fits the theme, is all! Plus, Archfiends! If you're going to play Red-Eyes, you have to have Archfiends! Also, Dragon and Queen prove, if anything, it is "White Night" and not, despite appearences, "White Knight" and they were all gifts from Sartorias and the Society of Light! (Nearly called him "Artorias"... Damned Dark Souls...)

I actually thought about Phantom Beasts just a couple days ago because, as I am a custom card maker, I made some custom Phantom Beast cards and I talked a it about them with a friend of mine.

What direction did you aim for? My cards revolved around lingering graveyard effects. I Had a fieldspell that would give some effects to Phantom beast Monsters on the field, depending on the phantombeast Monsters in the grave. For example, If Wildhorn is in the grave, all your Pb Monsters would deal piercing Battle damage. The Field Spell protects your graveyard, so all the lingering effects there can go off. The field spell special summons a Wildhorn from the Deck upon activation and i wanted the Deck to Revolver around Fusion summoning. So i gave every Main Deck Monster a Fusion with Gazelle. The Archetypes Bossmonster should still be that Fusion between Gazelle and Berformet, but better of course. The Fusion card can use a monster from the deck (another way to get Pb monsters in the graveyard) and one from the hand and can banish itself to save a Pb Monster. I designed another Main Deck Boss Monster that you can special summon by throwing down a card and sending a Pb from the deck to the grave. I Made a continous spell that would activate the field spell on activation and would let you search for a Pb Card at the "Cost" of sending a Pb monster from the Deck to the grave. I made retrains for berformet and Gazelle and gave them fitting effects that this Deck needs, mainly for consistency. Speaking of, this Deck bricks as hell. I havent found a way around it yet but im open for suggestions.

Thunder-Pegasus is a problem. When I played Duel Links, the taking 0 battle damage never worked on the card. Now, it has errata removing that in the TCG, it says "When an opponent's monster declares an attack: You can banish this card from your GY, then target 1 "Phantom Beast" monster you control; that monster you control cannot be destroyed by battle this turn." and that is how it worked in Duel Links. However according to the fandom site, it still has the old text.

Phantom Beast is another Archetype that deserves a make over. And it might get one pretty soon. Gazelle is an iconic monster used by Yugi. And a number of his iconic cards already got archetype support. So it's only a matter of time before we Get a Gazelle retrain and new Phantom Beast cards.

Here's some support for the archetype, I took about 5 minutes and this isn't written w/ psct phantom beast johnny lv 4, FIRE beast-warrior 1500/1500 special summon when you have no monsters or all beast-warriors, its a stratos for phantom beasts on summon, once during either battle you can give another phantom beast 1500 ATK until end of battle phase and you can banish it from gy to special any phantom beast from hand Chimera, the king of phantom beasts fusion WIND beast warrior level 5 2000/1200 2 phantom beast monsters can book of moon one monster per turn, destroy an opponent's card when it leaves the field, gains effects based on how many beast-warrior type phantom beasts were used for its summon 1: if this monster destroys a monster by battle (hard opt) send a random card from opponent's hand to gy 2: If this monster is destroyed by battle/card effect, return to extra deck, special summon up to 2 phantom beasts from gy phantom beast bungus link 1 WATER beast-warrior downward arrow, 500 ATK, needs 1 phantom beast Send up to 3 phantom beasts from hand or deck on link summon, your opponent can't attack other phantom beasts and you take no battle damage involving this card, hard once per turn, draw a card when it destroys an opponent's monster, can't be used as link material Phantom beast lair, field spell your opponent's monsters lose 500 ATK for every phantom beast you control Hard once per turn, banish this card from spell/trap zone to just search any spell card from your deck by having a phantom beast on field and sending a phantom beast from hand. This still feels like it could be abused in some other deck.

In Duel Links, one of Yami Yugi's AI decks uses Phantom Beasts, both the normal and the effect ones. I forget which level it's for, though.

Honestly, Phantom Beasts kind of look like if you took a Yugi-Kaiba format meta deck, and gave the monsters some effects to help the strategy, and changed some stats for balancing. Rock-Lizard = Summoned Skull Wild-Horn = La Jinn, Mystical Genie of the Lamp Thunder-Pegasus = Giant Soldier of Stone Basically the top three monsters of that format. Cross-Wing is a minor defender / stat boost. Berfomet - Gazelle is sort of off-meta, but a more consistent Fusion combo then you'd find. Maybe run 1x Gazelle 2x Berfomet, and if you have Polymerization you could summon Berfomet instead of Rock-Lizard and go into Chimera?
