Why Not Seek Rebirth to Other Pure Lands?

Q: Are there other better Pure Lands out there other than Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land? If so, can we seek rebirth?
A: Yes! In the sutras, the Buddha told us that there are other pure lands which are better than Amitabha Buddha's Pure Land in some aspects - But we ordinary beings can't go there.
No other Buddha promised to deliver us in His Pure Land simply by chanting his Name and believe in Him in the way that Amitabha Buddha did. This is really the easiest way to go to a Buddha's Pure Land. When we arrive in Amitabha's Pure Land we can quickly obtain enlightenment and be free to travel to all different worlds and pure lands in the Universe.

This is a very good question. A few of my thoughts: One could go through the various sūtras and compared the vows of the various Buddhas who made Buddha-lands. In his commentary on the Ten Bodhisattva Stages, Nagārjuna points out the virtues of reciting the names of all buddhas, but particularly mentions the Primal Vow (本願) of Amitābha and the qualities of his land. His Twelve Adorations (十二礼) indicate that he himself chose Amitābha as the object of his refuge. The Pure Land sūtras state that all Buddhas praise Amitābha and his vows, and that all Bodhisattvas come to his land and revere him. This indicates his centrality to all awakened ones. He similarly directs his roots of good to beings who hear his name who are in "other" Buddha-Lands. Rennyō mentions that just as we do not take a second wife or husband if we are a single-hearted or steadfast spouse, likewise since Amitābha saves those who have single-hearted and steadfast faith, we should not direct our devotion in multiple directions when we attain the mind of faith in Amitābha. Shandao mentions this too: if we are devoted to one master, but we secretly wish to honour another master at the same time, that is not being a single-hearted student of one master. If one is devoted to any other Buddha, we should be devoted just to Amitābha, for by honouring him, we honour all Buddhas. All Buddhas teach the Amitābha Sūtras-the Shorter Sūtra emphasises that what one Buddha teaches, all Buddhas teach. All Buddhas have their own causal conditions in their nirmāṇakāya and saṃbhoghakāya forms, but they all teach this sūtra. On the dharmakāya level, all Buddhas are Amitābha-his mind, encapsulated in his vows, is the same as bodhicitta, which is the same as Buddhahood. All skillful means point to the One Vehicle, which is the Primal Vow, nianfo/nembutsu. Thus, it is the one way through which all buddhas of the three times have attained, are attaining, and will attain awakening. 南無阿弥陀佛。

@Asterix You are focusing on form and missing the essence. Gain faith and the nembutsu will follow spontaneously. To concern with reciting once or reciting many times is over-calculation which sows doubt. Listen deeply to the sutras and commentaries and faith will come.

@Asterix You are not a newcomer to Buddhism Asterix, but I agree with your advice for newcomers. As for faith, you're connecting the term with a few concepts that are popular in western thinking about the term, so perhaps it is throwing you off. Firstly, as you suggest, you must first hear the words of the Buddha-you cannot have faith without hearing, thus the practice of Pure Land is sometimes described as "deep listening" to the words of Śākyamuni Buddha. I think the poster of these videos may have mentioned this before, but in Pure Land sects, the term that we use for faith (信心 shinjin) actually has three aspects (or "the three minds"): 1. Sincere mind, 2. Entrusting mind, and 3. Aspiring mind. A sincere mind means that you are being earnest-upon hearing, not doubting that the Buddha's words are true. The entrusting mind means that you wish to entrust yourself to that Buddha, to teach you in his Pure Land-this too, thus, has an element of lack of doubt. The aspiring mind is the aspiration to attain Buddhahood-having heard the Dharma, we know that the best thing for us to do is to attain Buddhahood and then return to this world to aid beings. These three minds each imply and necessitate each other, thus they are all referred to as "shinjin." This is sometimes translated as the mind of entrusting or mind of faith, but the latter can carry negative connotations for people with negative experiences of western religions. I won't address "why" the Pure Land sūtras are true, because the question which you asked me actually presumes the premise that they are true: you show that you wish to recite the nembutsu because you know that it has true and real effects-this implies that you know it has a true and real cause, namely that there is a Buddha called Amida who made a Primal Vow (本願) to save all beings. The heart of the matter at hand is HOW to chant the nembutsu. As I said before, do not get lost in form-the mechanics of practice are what concern the Zen sect and not the Pure Land sects: as Dogen said, the form of sitting in meditation is the entire path and manifesting Buddhahood. This is not the Pure Land path-we abandon any kind of self-power practices whereby your own effort or deeds are required for birth in the Pure Land, and instead rely wholeheartedly upon the vow. Due to considering the Dharma of Amida, when the mind of shinjin 信心 arises, it occurs in one thought moment-after that, the nembutsu arises spontaneously. There are some days where I chant thousands of nembutsus because I cannot stop thinking of Amida, and I have an outpouring of gratitude. There are other days where I chant 108 because I have lots of work to do (I am an academic in my work life). Other days, I have so much to do, and so many responsibilities, that I may only chant one nembutsu (it is rare, but it has occured). Regardless, the one thing that remains steadfast is the shinjin: this means that I know, without any doubt, that in my next life I will be born in Amida's Pure Land. Does this help with your question? If you want me to elaborate more, we can discuss one on one elsewhere, as this format is not very practical for lengthy discussion.

There isn’t a single Buddha that don’t chant Amituofo to attain Buddhahood. There isn’t a single Buddha that don’t praise Amituofo Western Pure Land. There isn’t a single Buddha that don’t praise Amituofo. There isn’t a single Buddha that don’t lecture on the Infinite Life Sutra. There isn’t a single Buddha that don’t urge sentient beings to seek birth into Amituofo Western Pure Land. So, you are not alone when one chants Amituofo, all the Buddhas in all Ten Directions are also chanting along with you. Not a single Buddha will be left out. Not many people are aware of it. Where to find another method having so many Buddhas supporting and helping us in our cultivation. This method is really a inconceivable.

If a person believe in Nichren Buddhism, what is the way we can change the person who believe they can also be born in their pureland? What is their pureland?? Billi
@PureLandBuddhism
@PureLandBuddhism 3 жыл бұрын
Hello you don't need to change their beliefs. They can transfer the merit of their practice towards seeking rebirth to the Pure Land and can still seek rebirth if they recite the Name of Amitabha Buddha at the time of near death and want to seek rebirth. So practitioners of other Mahayana paths can also seek rebirth if they transfer the merit of their practice to the Pure Land and recite Amituofo at the time of near death. Like Master Tiantai (Zhiyi) who also sought rebirth to the Pure Land in the end. Amituofo 🙏

@@billilim7233 yes but if they recite Namo Amituofo at the time of near death and seek rebirth then they can still seek rebirth. That's also what Master Tiantai did. But yes you can tell them to recite Amituofo now (if they want to). Amituofo 🙏

In the afterlife have Freewill, just don't believe or agree to reincarnation as the Archons can't force you to reincarnate but once you open your mind portal about Earth or so then immediately they can put you back to reincarnation soul trap matrix.

Pure Land is a Buddhist University. Once we are there , instantly we attain the Maha Bodhisattva level and enjoy the same capabilities like Amitabha Buddha. Everyday, we will travel to all the Buddhas Lands in all the Ten Directions to visit all our favourite Buddhas and listen to their dharma. Paying homage to Buddhas one gains fortunes, listen to sutras one gains wisdom. That is the reason why Bodhisattvas in Pure Land progress very fast. Simultaneously we will travel to other Buddha’s lands that has affinity with us and teach them. We have the capabilities to manifest into infinite bodies to teach in various Buddha’s Lands and same time we can help our families when their affinity is matured. Land of inconceivable conveniences.

Emanuel Swedenborg claimed that when we died we go to community that fit us the best and community we wanted to be in. All those Buddha and teaching is not for me so boring so that community not meant for me as I rather be me and besides in the afterlife we can instantly be, see and go anywhere like Astralproject unless your soul is trap like trap in the Reincarnation Soul Trap Matrix.

If you like Buddha then yes, you will enter the Pureland Buddha but mainly as what Emanuel Swedenborg said when we died we go to community that best for us and what fit us but Buddha community not meant for me as it so boring 😴.
