Nobody in Greece considers Spanoulis the greatest Greek player ever. Not even in the National team and its accomplisments. We had the best non NBA scorer (along with Oscar SChmidt) ever Nick Galis. He won a gold medal in 87 and basically kickstarted Greek basketball. Spanoulis won one too, but as the 10th player on the roster, averaging less than 2,5ppg. Papaloukas was the leader of that gold medal team. Also, giannis underperformed at a younger age, but due to the fact that he is not used to the kind of basketball being played in FIBA competitions. He improved so much in the last Euro (although still this kind of basketball doesn't fit his game naturally) but the supporting cast and coaching was rather weak. We were not the team that we used to be and it had nothing to do with Giannis' efforts. Although we look like a real team for this years Olympics

To be fair, Luka did not lead Slovenia to the Eurobasket gold. That was Goran Dragič. Luka was an essential component of the team along with the 2 best centers we ever fielded in Vidmar and Randolph. It was a huge team effort of which Luka was a part but not the main man. Jagodič and Čančar also had a good tournament and they were the most played players from Slovenia. If you ask me,besides Dragič, the best performance was put in by Gašper Vidmar at center, him and Gogi had excellent chemistry and were able to punish every team either on the pnr and in transition making them the one team who could do that constantly, they were able to switch tempo really quickly and seamlessly going from sluggish to FTL speeds in a blink so teams could not really adjust their defence properly

In Embiid's defence, - Camerun likes volleyall more than basketball. They wouldn't have cared that much. - France already had 2 centers which they would be willing to use and there would be so much controversy for the usage amount of each. - And there was a team with good guards and no real center. A team that needs you, where you can proove yourself against the others, of a country where you live, eat, enjoy. I think he made the correct choise but the way through that choise is ugly, mischievous, full of lies and disgust. On the current Greek roster, as seen in the Olympic Qualifiers, who would you replace with Thanasis if he was healthy? The only guys that make sense positionally are Kalaintzakis and Charalampopoulos. Kalaintzakis is pretty similar to Thanasis, with less athleticism and better basketball IQ. I don't think Charalampopoulos should be replaced in any way by Thanasis, because he can score efficiently. You could potentially say that Moraitis could be cut, but then you really clog up the forward position.

That might change in the near future but as of now, we're still at the top. We finally got unleashed in 92 (I bet that's why other countries wanted to keep us at only bringing college players) and we learned our lesson again as history repeated itself in 04. Imagine comparing AD to JJ, AD cooked that guy during the playoffs. And ADs role and purpose is more suited as starting center for USA than Embid. Embid cant even match the pace of his team mate, and cant set up screen for curry. Hell he even stay at the 3point line, making it harder for step to create space. With embids strength and height he should be dominating in the paint, but AD gladly took that role
