Dreamworks....they have had a pretty spotty run over the last decade or so. Whilst they are very capable of pulling out a genuinely good film....often that is tempered by at least two more trash films. So today I want to explain the tragedy lurking behind one of the truly good Dreamworks films of the 2010s that will never get a sequel.

I was obsessed with it as well. And also with Jack Frost. I was complaining about seeing it again after watching it in movie theaters, that my mom had to download it. Man, was I excited about that! But now I really feel bad for making her go through with that. That doesn’t mean though that I didn’t enjoy every time I got to watch this movie for free on her computer. This movie rules and is definitely one of Dreamworks most underrated ones!

I adore this movie; love the mythology, the characters, the thematic arcs, all the things. The part where Jack Frost says "you can see me?" was such a powerful payoff moment that it's still the only part in a movie I can think of that me cry *during a part that wasn't sad*. I bought the Man on the Moon book for my son when he was small and I could easily see a studio making an entire franchise out of that world. It's too bad we keep getting more boss babies and trolls instead :(

This is based on a book serious called 'The Guardians'. Each of the characters has a book, Jacks' is the last. My little one enjoyed being read the books, but it is definitely ment for older kiddos as the series is very expansive & each are novels. I'd say it would be most appropriate 9&up. My husband did most of the reading & really enjoyed the world, I liked what I was able to hear but normally passed out a few minutes in once the kiddo was settled. My passing out is not a reflection on the book just pure exhaustion. Also I remember this move being boycotted around the time it came out, I don't remember exactly why, from what I can remember it had something to do with some religions organizations being mad about it. I guess it was because of Easter being a driving force in the movie, but I could be wrong.

@@ladypool1404 Speaking of Treasure planet, I think Rise of the guardians was also set up to fail like Treasure planet was. The marketing/trailers were both misleading in both cases (Treasure planet was marketing as an action packed adventure movie when it's more coming of age + family movie, Rise of guardians is apparently an Easter movie but the main character and the most recognizable one are both winter/Christmas characters) and both movies were released to compete with the most popular franchise at the time (Treasure planet vs Harry Potter, Rise of guardians vs 007, Twilight)

Ah, I remember so much of the work I did on this film. In particular, the Tooth Fairy's castle and those tiles as well as the feathers... I had already torn into the feather stuff at that point for Kung Fu Panda 2 and Croods, but I think the Tooth Fairy was a tough one because she was designed to be more shimmery, which meant loads of aliasing issues for distant shots. Especially for the mini-fairies. If you had any idea how many times I had to fix issues with feathers changing colors and castle tiles swimming left and right on that film... But damn, it was fun.

I don't know if this comment is genuine or someone pretending online, but if it's genuine great job! This film has a lot of animation that looks like it it would be incredibly difficult to get done right. The fairies while initially off-putting (because it's not how we're groomed to expect fairies to look) look great. I truly respect the effort that everyone who had something to do with this film put into it. It very easily became my favorite 3D animated movie of all-time.
@parasharkchari
@parasharkchari 2 жыл бұрын
Well, for the record, I was never an animator or artist of any sort. I worked on underlying tech that the artists would actually use to enable and streamline their work. So when I say things like "working on the feathers", it was the tools and geometry and surfacing shaders that enabled the creation and modeling and texturing of those feathers without artists having to painstakingly extrude thousands of barbules for every strand. The tech that was used for tiling the Tooth Fairy's castle, btw, was an extension of what was used in Bee Movie to build those hexagonal tiles for the hive interiors. It was subject to a lot of aliasing issues (what I referred to as "swimming"), which is why at far distance shots in Bee Movie, the artists had to matte paint a lot of scenery. I basically fixed that for Guardians and added support for other tile shapes and aspect ratios as well as tiling directions. The tooth fairy's shimmery wings were challenging because shimmering is a high-frequency lighting behavior, and when you're trying to do things like supersample in time for motion blur, you run the risk of sampling a bright "shiny" moment very intermittently, and then it looks more like the wings are flashing like a strobe rather than shimmering. Raytracers get around this by stochastically sampling the time axis as well as the spatial axes, but that's also quite costly, and Dreamworks hadn't transitioned to a raytracer back then (no matter how hard a few of us in R&D, myself included, evangelized for it). I left while in the middle of production on Peabody & Sherman, and then the PDI office (where I worked) was shut down and everybody laid off about a year after that. If you're curious, here's my IMDB page -- www.imdb.com/name/nm3938847/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr248 Also, while I worked on a couple of films beyond that point (e.g. Peabody & Sherman, KFP3, HTTYD2), I left DWA well before they wrapped, so I wasn't credited, which is normal. It's also happened in games that I worked on like Shadow of the Tomb Raider (I left before it wrapped as well). I was around all the way to wrapping Rogue One when I worked at Lucas, but only one guy on the ADG team was actually credited. He may have been the only member of the team who was credited, but also the most deserving IMO, as he spent the most late nights and did the most actual work -- www.imdb.com/name/nm4616099/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1, if you're curious. I can't claim to have done much of value to Rogue One in practice because I was working there, had to deal with 5 hours of commuting, my daughter was born around that time, and I was doing 2 Master's degrees simultaneously... so... yeah... not exactly likely to be a super-productive team member under those circumstances...

I think this could have been huge if they had released it at a different time where it wasn’t competing against bigger names. I really think this had the potential to go on for a trilogy and maybe even an animated series especially when you consider that it was originally a series of books with its own long and intricate mythology and world building that given time to breath and explore…could have been amazing
@rexex345

I think the biggest issue was because it's an Easter film the expectation with stock holders and investors was that it would be releasing at Easter, which unfortunately put it slap dab in the middle of one of the biggest movie periods generally. If it had been a few weeks before or after... Yeah it would have done great and probably built a lot of hype before the others came out.

Guardians has a hope though. William Joyce said that Dreamworks had been open to a possible pitch for a sequel or series based on the success of the Jack Frost novel (which became a bestseller). Not to mention the film has been more than successful on home video and streaming, getting rereleased almost every easter, and managing to get into the top 5 on netflix on release and staying there for weeks.

One of the biggest reason Dreamworks fail with their movies is their marketing team. They tend to not listen to the artists and creators of the movies and push the marketing towards children, when this film is really more about nostalgia of childhood for young adults and older who forgotten about what it was like to be a child. The adults who saw ROTG before it was released said that it brought them back memories when they believed tooth fairy/Santa was real and remembered what it was like to have wonder and hope. Dreamwork’s marketing team failing a movie happened to ‘Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas’ as well. The concept artists had an extremely cool looking poster design (I believe it looked like a really big and cool silhouette of the villain with the boat sailing in a harsh sea) but the marketing team turned them away because it looked too "dark". So they chose a design that looked so simple and plain (two character posing with a sword) for the official cover of the movie. This makes adults think “oh it’s just another children movie” when the actual movie itself is pretty dark themed! One of the formal dreamworks concept artist complained about this in his art course and showed the poster design and I wished it was that poster!!! (They can’t show it in public because it’s dreamworks copyright) Dreamworks still struggles with marketing and you can tell by their instagram account. If you compare with Disney's Animation instagram, you can tell Dreamworks tries so hard to market towards children and tries to create engagement by creating "relatable memes" and mini games. (I have a feeling because of Shrek, they believe memes will draw their audience) Most animated movie fans are more interested in the concept art and how it's made (because of artists who creates fan art and has the most power to create the fandom around the movie) but I believe Dreamworks doesn't know their audience. (Disney is really good with their marketing in their animation account because they show a lot of behind the scenes and concept art from their movies). This is why Dreamworks started to focus more towards TV shows on Netflix like Troll Hunters, How to train your dragon, and Boss Baby since they can reach more children in that platform. I honestly think they need marketing teams to communicate more with their artists and have younger generations to pitch in their ideas

This movie is one of my favorites and is completely underrated. I rate movies based on “the big three” as I call it. 1. Is the movie entertaining and for how many ages? 2. Does it make you think? 3. Is there a moral (Bonus) 4. Is it quotable? In my mind, this movie fills out all four! It is a super fun watch with humor, action and a bit of nostalgia for good mesure. It makes me wonder about all the old mother goose and fairy tales that I’ve read about. And the Moral(s) in this case is “face your fears. Have faith. You’re never really alone.” And as for Quoting, absolutely! “How many times have I told you to KNOCK!” You can always squeeze in a Rise of the Guardians quote. The story line makes sense, the characters are well written, it’s overall just a beautiful film. But when talking about a sequel (I feel this way about every movie) I 50/50 want them to make one. Half wanting to see more, and half terrified that Dreamworks would ruin the story. Completely underrated, absolutely.

So when I discovered this movie a couple of years ago. I was going though some VERY dark times in my life. I was extremely depressed all the time, it got so bad I was nearly suicidal(mentally anyway) doctors couldn't help me, nor could medicine or therapy. Then this wonderful gem of a movie showed me how to have hope again, it re-taught me how to find light in darkness, and taught me how a little belief in one's self can become infections. This movie LITERALLY saved my life, Jack Frost saved my life. tooth, bunny, north, sandy, saved my life. I will never forget the first time I watched it and the emotions it instilled, or how much Jack felt exactly like me. I can't thank the team behind the movie or Bill Joyce for his creation of these characters enough. It is an animated masterpiece. This movie is EXTREMELY underrated and it deserves more. I am ok if it never happens but it's stories and characters like this that world needs right now. Something to stir the humanity and belief in us all. It is quite the shame it flopped as hard as it did. Even so it's been nearly a decade. I think it's time to revive these characters, this franchise, and give it something no matter how small.

Rise of the Guardians is certainly one of the most endearing stories I've seen in a long time. It's fun, magical and has a really interesting dynamic between Jack and Pitch Black. Honestly, "Everything is gonna be pitch black" is one of my favorite lines in all animated movies.

I still remember going to the theatre with my highschool friends, then fangirling in the front with more brand-new friends because Jack Frost coincidentally resembled a character from our favorite local book series. Then being blown away by the plot, the guardians' lairs, and everyone near me reaching out to try and catch that 3D snowflake from Jack at the end. Recalling it still gives me warm, fuzzy feelings in my chest now. And I will always feel sad whenever I look at how much heart and story and passion is packed into this unique gem compared to Frozen (which could've been perfect with less jokes and singing to free up time for depth), and see Guardians die a quiet death while Frozen would go on to spawn a global craze. I've seen many stories with Santa Claus and the whole "believing" trope, but Sandman? Tooth Fairy? A badass Easter Bunny (who then turned soooo cute oh kill me plz)? Jack Frost? Boogey man? ALL IN ONE FILM? Not to mention Jack Frost's arc was so unique and heartwrenching and cathartic. How seemingly similar he is to Boogeyman, how tempting it is to take the easy path, how lost one can become from losing a memory that is your one defining moment, but Jack rediscovered his sense of self and proved himself worthy for old Moon in the end. I could go on and on and on about how much I love this film. Unrelated but, I remember I was holding my breath in the scene when Jack was walking on rooftops after yelling at the moon because it was the perfect point for him to break into song, and he didn't, and I remember this isn't Disney and I thanked the gods that be for that XD. I dunno why, if he had sung it would've been so cheesy I would've cringed so hard and it would've ruined the film for me.

Rise of the guardian is definitely a hidden gem and objectively should have thrived because I don't recall even liking Skyfall's story. I think the problem was that the marketing was subpar and misleading and internationally many people were getting somewhat tired of bad book adaptations. At least that was what I gathered from what I recall from 2012. For example...despite How to train your dragon's popularity, I would say a big part of the reason why people were willing to watch it was because it was marketed as made by the creators of Kungfu panda and Shrek, which were all major hits in my country. Personally, I didn't think How to train your dragon lived up to the legacy of Shrek or Kungfu panda, even though it is a good film in its own right. Now, when Rise of the guardians was marketed, it was marketed as created by the creators of How to train your dragon and I think that made quite the difference. The trailers were somewhat misleading too if this was meant to be an Easter movie because it's either North or Jack that is the focus and most recognizable in the trailers. Regarding bad book adaptations...it was in 2010/2011 but the Percy Jackson movie probably didn't help. Honestly, the Hunger games movie was considered a pleasant surprise by the majority. + and it definitely didn't help that it was released alongside Skyfall and Breaking Dawn...but I also blame the marketing for this

I don't think it was specifically meant to be an Easter movie. The Easter Bunny os ONE OF the major characters in the ensemble, and it *does* take place over Easter, but I don't see the holiday as being absolutely central to the story itself.

I didn't even know this film wasn't successful until this video, because I've got it on DVD for years and everyone at home always loved it. There's definitely marketing issue alongside those big names. I recall HTTYD as massive in my country at least, the cinema was full for every part and I was already in high school for second and third which didn't stop me just like many of my peers. Together with Kung Fu Panda it is my absolute favourite animated serie. As people count down the film that had their premiere back in those years, I become very sad over the state of current cinema. Post-covid theatres are so stripped of good films, so many things goes to streaming platforms. Back then those were the times were I could have been in cinema even once a month, because there was so many interesting stuff coming out but now... I wish the situation fixes.

Skyfall story is good. It's just intro failed to introduce audience to the mood of the story. When I saw Chinese dragons I thought the villain is going to be a lady who was mad in love with Bond and most of the action will be in China. A better intro would be Stings' song "What Could Have Been"

The cinematography is so damn good that I wonder why animated films don’t often look this much fun. One main reason: director Peter Ramsey. Remember Spiderverse? Peter’s hands are so noticeable between both of these films. Just look at the fast running sequences or the action. He’s a masterful storyboard artist and illustrator, and perfect to be a director. Even if this film failed, at least we can see he’s still making films like this, and successful at that

This movie was genuinely so good; I watched it once so long ago and remember every moment. BTW!! There’s actually a book called Seasons of the Storm by Elie Cosimano that’s similar where it talks about these characters called ‘Seasons’ who each represent a season and have powers accordingly, meant to bring their weather to their assigned area. The main conflict surrounds a Winter (Jack) and a Spring (Fleur) who are both in love, although they can’t act on it because of the way they operate; see, Seasons change the weather to theirs by hunting down and killing the season before them, successfully becoming the primary season in the area. Seasons aren’t allowed to interact with the other three seasons (they’re constrained to their own ppl) and it’s a competition to be the best season in your area - hard for these two who don’t wanna hurt each other. But soon the Winter discovers a secret that makes him realize things can be changed, and that they’ve been told false rules and practices this whole time. It’s action-packed with a lot of world building and slow romance, and it rly reminded me of this movie with Jack Frost and Jack Sommers in the book. Definitely recommend it to those who enjoy elemental powers kind of thing!

I've LOVED Rise of The Guardians ever since it first came to cinemas and I feel like even though it didn't gain a lot in profit, the DreamWorks team gave up to soon and it still has so much potential in it. Yes, the movie wasn't marketed well especially when they thought it was more suited to be an Easter movie when most of the story focused on a winter and Christmas feel so it would've done better in Christmas time when movies like Rise of The Guardians would've really driven the kids wild then. However, that doesn't make Rise of the Guardians a lost cause now as it still has a lot of chances to make a great comeback. Rise of the Guardians from what I've seen still has a fanbase that's going strong and the fanfictions created by fans stand as high testament as to how much potential the movie has to be even greater. Rise of the Guardians has a lot of things that could help in its comeback and enlighten the audience. One of those things that could help for example is content. Rise of the Guardians is based on the books; 'The Guardians of Childhood' and each guardian has their own story even Pitch Black so it isn't lacking in content. If DreamWorks feels it's too risky to give Rise of the Guardians a sequel after the setback it got with the first movie. I'll admit that I don't know much about the finance and marketing department of animation in the entertainment business but I do know that it takes a lot. However, that doesn't mean that DreamWorks can't at least try with another tactic. DreamWorks' movies may have a majority of 3D animated works but they're no strangers to 2D animations and have their own shares of work there too. So if a 3D sequel of Rise of the Guardians is to risky then maybe try a 2D series of maybe the big four's back stories or maybe what happened to Jack Frost in those 300 years of his spirit life before becoming a guardian or even how he's adjusting to being a guardian now. The show could even shed more light on other fantastical icons like the Groundhog, the Leprechaun, Cupid, Peter Pan and many others as it dives deeper into the world of childhood fantasy. It could be a chance of not just awakening nostalgia in adults but introducing new generations born in the world of technology to these old but great legends. It will probably cost a lot in finance there's no doubt about that but it is still worth a try for DreamWorks, and if the response doesn't give much hope for a sequel then that's that but they can at least try.

As far fetched as it seems, I actually do think there’s still hope for a sequel or any type of continuation. I used to love The Croods, but practically NOBODY else I talked with had ever even heard of it. I assumed it dead in the water, especially after the animated series no one cared about it. So imagine my extreme surprise to hear news of its sequel in 2020, almost 7 years after the first movie’s release? The same with Chicken Run. It came out in 2000 and what feels like out of absolute nowhere, a sequel drops on Netflix this year! TWENTY THREE YEARS after the first’s release!! Dreamworks seemingly had no problem reviving movies that seem long dead. So while I’m not necessarily holding my breath, I don’t think it’d be impossible if a Rise of the Guardians sequel was announced sometime in the near future.

The only flaw I can find in the RoTG movie is the aging of the animation, which is always a risk when working with 3D. Most of it didn't age too poorly, but Jack's hair specifically hasn't aged well. Every time I watch it, I wonder how he'd look with modern 3D technology, especially with the sorts of tools that gave Elsa her platinum blonde hair, since Jack's hair is almost entirely opaque and doesn't refract light the way most light hair does in animation, making it look a little dingy and dirty. It'd be an expensive change, but I think the overall effect would be worth it

For me, DreamWorks movies that need next movie: -Rise of the Guardians -Megamind -Monsters vs. Aliens -Puss in Boots -Penguins of Madagascar -How to Train Your Dragon (Sequel of first movie, new story after first/second movie for next movie, i want to see different outcome of their story) -The Bad Guys

I absolutely loved the movie. One of my best friends was a fan of the books, so we still discuss the movie fairly regularly since she still makes art for the book using the movie designs.

I was obsessed with this movie as a young teen when it came out. It floored me then and now how it failed when it's such a great story.

I genuinely love Rise of the Guardians. It's my second favorite movie, and I'm so happy it was put on Netflix, since that gives it a chance to at least get more popularity online, and it already looks like it's making a resurgence.

I loved this movie as a kid! It came out when I was pretty young, and honestly fostered a lot of imagination in my tiny brain. Every time I saw the frost creep in, I would think about Jack frost making a snow day for us, and would try to look for him lol. I re-watched sometime last year, and it held up really well, especially compared to some other movies I liked as a kid. I feel like people can really connect with Jack, regardless of age, since his whole arc is really about coming into his own, accepting/remembering the past, and finding his own path (or center, in this case). It just really resonated with me. I don't remember if I saw it in theaters or not, but I do still have an old DVD of it laying around that I would watch all the time. This movie really got the short end of the stick, and there really wasn't a lot they could do. If they tried pushing release dates, releasing it a year later would have pitted it against Frozen, and waiting 2 years would conflict with HTTYD2- one of their own films. it was really a lose-lose for rise of the guardians. It sucks that they were never able to make a sequel for such a cool movie, but I guess I can just stick with re-watching it (and there's always the novels too)

I think it is underrated. The animation, the art, effects, and the story. It was all done beautifully. The only problem I had with it was the pacing of the story, which rushed through everything a bit too fast. But otherwise, I fell in love with the movie. It just so happened to be the one movie that made me want to go into the animation business. I still remember seeing the frost animation on the trees, the light sprinkle of the snow, and the sand. I watched it in 3D, it was breathtaking. And it's a somewhat special movie. It is very different from everything else. There is some kind of magic, a bit of nostalgia for the childhood days, and a soft story. It's a comfortable movie. When you're feeling down, cold and lonely, you get yourself a cup of tea or cocoa, snuggle with a blanket and watch this. Honestly, I was really hoping it became a series that would have slower pacing, keep the art and design or go for an easier done style that wouldn't kill the story, and just spread generosity and love with the episodes because I'm pretty sure the original books would translate into the comfort series for every age. I have 3 of those books and it's the softest, kindest stories for children and young by heart. Truly wonderful writing. So yeah, this movie and the books, in general, are a hidden gem.

When you said this movie was an Easter movie I was like “no way, you’re lying”. Ends up it is 🗿🗿 I absolutely love this movie and even I didn’t realize it was an Easter movie 😭😭 I guess ur right that that’s lowkey its downfall

To me, this movie is about faith. I have been agnostic for the last 11 years, and the moment when Jamie begs the Easter bunny for a sign makes me cry every time. It's a plea I've made many times on lonely nights when I needed my faith affirmed. I always cry at that scene without fail.

Rise of the Guardians is still one of my favorite animated films. I remember seeing it in theater when I was like 12 or 13 and just being in awe of how detailed, whimsical, and fun it was. But I’m sad that it didn’t get the recognition it deserved.

Rise of the Guardians in my opinion is probably one of the best DreamWorks animated films I have every seen. It knew when to take things seriously and when to make things lighthearted and fun. I would love to see a sequel or a full movie franchise, but at the same time that idea worries me because a lot of sequels don't have the same amount of effort as the first movie. Which bothers me a lot. As someone who enjoys storytelling I think it's important to make the first story as good as you can and then with the next one strive to do better than the last one

I think this film is heavily underrated but it still has its audience for it even now. I think it definitely has a grew a following as time went on. I think this film was done dirty because not even dreamworks social media mentions it. This film is one of my fav films of all time and has influenced me to this day. I think this film isn't just a Easter film, I find it an all round film, even tho it came out around Christmas time (or November can't remember). I do wish they made like at least a TV show or something because there is an audience for it and there is a lot of material from the books it was based off they could use. This is legit a good film and I wish dreamworks could see that but I guess money is all that matters, as it was a flop to them it was a gem to me.

I remember watching it just because I had nothing else to do and wanted to see something animated. I went in hoping for absolutely nothing and I was in awe. How did I never heard of it before? Why are not people talking about it? It's amazing.

I loved Rise of the Guardians---Chris Pine was still a newcomer but was perfect and all the other voices (Hugh Jackman!! Alec Baldwin! et al ) were perfectly cast. It's a shame that this film lost money---it really was an enchanting film that should have scored big! I concur with Willowing Whispers--an underrated gem!

This movie was my childhood, I loved it to bits as a kid and still do now. I remember I at one point forgot about it but still had small memories and was eventually abled to find it, it is really said that this film is so gorgeous, amazing and interesting, yet almost no one talks about. It is sad that it was such a flop, it deserves better.

I think it deserves a sequel rise of the guardians or at least a series or at least small little like two minute movies instead of just being for gone to time

I took my son to see it and then I took my friend to see it (she doesn't really like animated...anything) We all loved it. Every Easter and Christmas my son would put this movie on repeat. I have to say it was the one movie that I never got sick of and I would sit and watch with him most of the time. Now I have complicated feelings. My son passed a few years ago. Not long after he turned 13. Post surgical complications. I see this movie and it brings up both crushing agony and grief and beautiful fun memories that I cherish.

I love this film! Watch at least once a year and it has slowly become one of my go-to feel-good movies because of it's unique pov on our holiday legends being guardians. I think it's sweet and also has such a good message for kids about "finding your center". The cast was great! And yes, the detailed worldbuilding really did make it seem that they had plans for more and I am sad we will miss out on those other stories because two other franchises (whose films aren't that great) overshadowed a truly solid film.
