Why Padlock is an awesome feature you should be using | Star Citizen

Padlock is a simple function that is common in many other simulation games like DCS and IL-2. What it does is tracks your view onto your target automatically and holds it. Giving you better overall situational awareness when in a dogfight. It can be a great substitute for those that do not have hardware trackers like TrackIR, Tobii, or FOIP. In this video, we'll talk about how to enable it at all times and how to enable it via keybinds. As well as briefly discussing the pros and cons.

It is not perfect, but for those of you that want to get a bit more situation awareness out of your dogfights but lack hardware trackers. Then this may be a solution for you. Again, I highly recommend you utilize this with the keybind as it allows you to switch off and on padlock at will. Especially, if it does anything wonky or it feels like more of a hinderance due to bugs or any other issues. Have you already tried it out yet? Let me know what you think of it!

Ive played star citizen for 7 years. I never knew they added this. And i got a well tuned look-ahead setup, tuned over several months. NEVER knew about Padlock. Holy shit. This is a game changer.

One that CIG is seriously doing right is all of the character controls, my favorite that I wish every game would start doing is using the scroll wheel to adjust walk/run speed, I hate first person RPGs where you don't have good control over your characters movement speed now, its such a little thing that makes the experience so much more immersive.

Almost every game has this built into the keybinds. CIG is just incompetent and there’s no way to do it in their alpha without this ridiculous feature.

I use my phone for hear tracking, via smoothtrack ($10) and opentrack (free). I've never tried Track IR so I can't compare it to a dedicated system, but it works great for me. For faster tracking, use gnirehtet (free) to use your phone over usb rather than wifi. The cam on your phone is already far superior to almost any webcam. Why not use it?

neat feature, I wasn't even aware of it. I'll experiment with the keybound approach. Also it's worth mentioning that simply having freelook on a mouse button goes pretty far, without the drawbacks of an automated system.

Tobii 5 eye/head tracking is also available and beats both methods you mentioned. You can eye track or head track or both track. All we need is CIG to turn on FOIP capability for it, and it will be even more accurate than a camera even.

Hey great vid. Not many people have mentioned this feature. Have used it in other sims and it works great. I have trackir on one rig and although a bit cumbersome (having to wear hat or head piece) it works excellent but recently set up another system without Trackir so this is a God send. Going to use the auto and a joystick key binding for this feature as suggested. Like how it breaks lock when enemy gets out of view. The one thing I didn't know about was that you can use the FOIP as a form of head tracking. I've seen the FOIP function for face movement recognition before but good on CIG to make it usable as a head tracker. Everyone has a little camera kicking around. Awesome.

I never knew this was a thing, def will give it a try next time I fly. I have Tobii but I don't always use it as I personally have rather sensitive eyes an at times find it a bit fatiguing, we might not /see/ infrared but it is still a lightwave.

Just want to make shure I have this straight: if I set the target padlock on YES in the game settings and keybind it in the advance key settings, when I hit the key will the padlock feature go on NO and if I hit the key again will it comeback to YES? What about holding the selected key, what does that do?

It's late at night and I may be dumb, but do you have any videos on how to properly setup FoIP? I can get it to track my facial movements, but I can't get it to track my head movements like you can. So basically that means I can't look left or right or up or down like you could in the beginning of the video.

I haven't liked pad locking. I feel it takes away from my ability to fly. When your forced to look at you target it can hide obstacles like asteroids.

where I failed was not binding a key for this feature. I turned it off right away when a target flew by me in an asteroid field and couldnt see where i was going lol. ill give it a shot after the 3.15 patch i dont feel like rebinding everything again

Didn't know this was a thing and found your video yesterday. For Pad Locking do I need FOIP Head Tracking enabled? getting a little confused. I'm using a X52Pro and looked and binding it to one of the keys on the stick, but head tracking wasn't doing anything or Pad locking. Then found the "Enable Head Tracking (Toggle)" bind as well "Enable/Disable Target Padlock (toggle/hold)" binging. the head tracking is really senseative so and still wasn't sure if it was working or not.

Padlock use to be my bread and butter in Fighter Ace. Forced orientation to the target was so helpful during dogfights. I have a Tobii and I enjoy using it, but can you turn on padlock and override the Tobii or do you have to disable Tobii then enable padlock? how does this work with torpedoes? if youre looking upward to get an off-axis target lock, if you dont strafe upward arent you just gonna get hit by your own torp as it begins to travel forward?
