The Non-Canon Expert looks at the lore surrounding the Force, Palpatine, and the Skywalkers within the current Canon to illustrate some of the motivations that could explain the Sith Lord's return in Episode 9, explaining what Palpatine knew during and prior to the events of Episode 6: Return of the Jedi and the important role that Anakin and Luke have in these events.
This is a Canon story looking at the events going into Episode 9 with information from a number of Canon sources, but primarily within the novel "Star Wars: Tarkin," the novel "Star Wars: Aftermath: Empire's End," and the Episode 8: The Last Jedi novelization. With Episode 9 only days away, I wanted to make sure I provided all of my final thoughts regarding Palpatine’s return based upon the lore, as well as make my case for the role of Anakin (and Luke!) within this lore material. If Palpatine challenges the Will of the Force in Episode IX, it only makes sense that Anakin Skywalker as the Chosen One channels the Will of the Force to defeat Palpatine. I think the best way to end the Skywalker Saga is have Anakin defeat Palpatine, thus destroying the Sith and accomplishing that part of the prophecy. Then Anakin can use the knowledge and wisdom he gained in the netherworld of the Force to teach Rey and Kylo so that through them a new order of balanced Force users can rise, an order known as "The Skywalkers". This act would accomplish the balance of the Force part of the prophecy, and it would give meaning to Anakin's sacrifice and redemption in Episode VI, as he would have needed to become a Force Ghost to gain the knowledge needed to create this new order.

I'd like to firstly thank you for not referencing any of the TV spots because I have been avoiding them for all I'm worth! The trailer was enough for me. More importantly tho, I too am toeing that line between excitement and fear. I completely agree that the ending of ROTJ is wonderful and important. Not only for Anakin's arch & redemption but for Sidious as a threat. Please don't misunderstand, I am beyond excited for him to be the threat of this final chapter. I literally skipped through my parents home singing "They're bringing back my Palpatine! My Palpatine is back!" to the tune of Queen's Bicycle after watching the panel on KZbin (my Mum is a wonderfully accepting soul 😄), so there's definitely no lack of enthusiasm on my part. But I'd be lying to say that I'm not terrified that he's only being brought back to be killed again, like so many other villians; Moriarty, Khan, the Daleks, or worst of all Cobra Commander! I don't want to see his threat & evil diluted. My hope is that he is foiled by being trapped in exile like Abaloth, or that it literally takes the Chosen One to literally become his prison guard and seal him inside the force similar to his defeat in Legends, or best of all he kind of wins.... He becomes the new manifestation of the Dark like the Brother but Anakin takes the role of the Father and keeps him from returning to the wider galaxy with Luke volunteering to remain also to allow for true balance. Some variant of these ideas would be cool, tho maybe they have something even more satisfying planned.

Because Disney didn't have any plan from the beginning and wanted 3 different directors to do each movie, leading to different ideas and visions for the movies, leading to contradictions and writing the other directors into a corner. They killed off the main villain and, without any legitimate threat, fell back on a villain that died and helped fulfilled the prophecy of the chosen one that took 6 movies to unfold. They created new characters with little to no backstory and few explainable character traits, made legacy characters regress in character development and/or made them act in a way totally opposite of the way they acted before. Finally, introducing abilities and concepts that go against canon without good explanation as to why it didn't happen before.

Rey has learned about the Jedi since she was young and didn't know how to disbelieve it. Where did Snoke come from and how did his fall to the dark side happen? Why did Sidious (oh, wait. This video describes that). There are lots of things people want to know, but there are lots of people who don't need to know those things to understand what's important to the story itself.

This completely flies in the face of who Palpatine was. Sheev was a narcissist, megalomaniac, and as corrupt as they come. In six movies, not once did he ever give up power, and if he had actually lived past ep. 6, he would have thrown surviving the assassination squarely in the face of the rebels, and laughed his ass off in the process. There is no way that Palpatine would have ever given up his control of the galaxy only to retreat into the shadows...that is what plageis would have done. You are talking about the wrong Sith.

Well, seeing how he manipulated everything well before the events of Episode 1, moving through the Senate and gaining power to eventually become Emperor, he did this to place himself in a position to not just gain power, but to cheat his destiny, one he had foreseen (vaguely) of his death by the hand of his own apprentice. He had 'thought' he had planned everything perfectly, only to overlook the 'little' details that he never thought would be part of his eventual downfall (like the Ewoks on Endor). Still, he had several backup plans created, in the event of his demise, and one of those plans- should he die- he would live on in the body of a clone, if not several clone bodies over the course of time. However, only one clone was successfully created, leaving Palpatine to rethink his approach towards how he would retake the galaxy he once ruled. To do so meant having a more 'powerful' Empire than the one that was so easily crushed by the Rebels. Over time, Palpatine learned from his mistakes, while 'still' manipulating the events that were happening between the New Republic, the Resistance, and the First Order. Palpatine simply watched and waited for the right moment to strike.

@@cBake0 there are a lot of things that have been taken from EU (palpi comes back, the son of leia and han turn to the dark side and fuck things up, etc). HOWEVER, not because those ideas were in the EU that means that they were well implemented, because they werent. EU: Jacen Solo is pushed time and time again into the dark side because he saw a lot of fucked up shit. He was captured in the most bloody and horrible war the universe have ever seen, he was tortured by a fallen Jedi who, at the end, showed him a different path, and he took it. He was secretly a sith for years before being discovered (he wasnt Palpatine after all) and he fucked up the galaxy as Darth Caedus. Awesome story that developed for a long time. Canon: Ben Solo was born with darkness inside him cuz Vader. Luke saw this and, despite the FACT that he saw the little, tiny light in Vader's heart, that he was willing to die before killing his father, who was at the time the second most evil and ruthless individual in the galaxy, he came with the conclusion that nope, his nephew needed to be killed, you know, the only son of his beloved sister and Best friend. So he tried to kill him when he was sleeping, he failed. Then lucky Kylo found a dark user that finished his training. These 2 stories have the same basis, one is slowly crafted to develop the fall of Solo's son into the dark side, the other is a spit to the face of a beloved and important character (Luke), destroying the character, making him do something so off character Even the actor was pissed ... I remember Dooku was supouse to beg for mercy, but Lee thought that that was WAY off character for Dooku to do, and Lucas agreed. THAT is how you handle character development, thats what a true director do, not telling their actors "shut up and drink from that alien's tits"

@@fernandonavia8804 see the problem is you are twisting the new Canon with a belittling frame. Snoke had been twisting Ben Solo for years before Luke peered into him with the Force. Ben had been lied to his entire life about Vader as his connection to Luke and Leia was a secret the Galaxy at large was unaware of. The wider state of the Galaxy had not improved following the fall of the empire, and Ben felt like Anakin that politics prevented the action that needed to be taken. He built up a glorification for the perceived order the empire had represented. Luke had a moment of weakness when he saw the destruction the first order would cause, can you imagine the intense emotion you as a beacon of light would feel seeing the deaths of all of your students, of Han your best friend, seven Central populated worlds core to the government of the republic you believe in snuffed in an instant, possibly the destruction of the light itself and Sidious's return if these new story threads are considered, and he ignited his blade for a mere moment before regaining his composure. It's not that far fetched, and it's not terribly written. In fact it's quite interconnected through comics, books, movies, and shows now and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. But I was never a fan of the Vong War and always felt that much of the old EU from the point of it's implementation leaned on poor writing, and my opinion is that this new Canon actually takes some of the best concepts from the EU and adds real cohesion to them.

Im 1 of the original Star Wars super fans whos followed the Star Wars universe since attending the premire in 1977 with my wife , aside from the original 3 films that my wife & i love both of us absolutely hate every Prequel following the original trilogy,the new social justice warrior Star Wars films are even worse than the Jar Jar Binks nonsense & do nothing to better the Stat Wars Universe ,the comics & books have been just as entertaining if not more exciting than the trilogy i love , im prolly the oldest Star Wars fan here at 74 years old , i just wanted to acknowledge how much pleasure i derive from listening to all of this lore explained on this channel , keep up the excellent work bringing these talks to us as most of us dont have the time to read everything thats cannon .
