The Non-Canon Expert looks at how Darth Vader was understood by the citizens of the Galactic Empire, explaining why Emperor Palpatine intentionally hid Darth Vader's full powers and abilities from the galaxy within the current Canon and then how this information compares to Palpatine's efforts within the Legends lore.

I remember reading Dark Lord and Palpatine being all for demonstrations of Vader's power because if someone that powerful serves him, that would immediately imply that the Emperor was even stronger than Vader

I really like Palpatine's approach to that area of Vader in Dark Lord as well, where he wasn't really worried at all about what the galaxy thought of his apprentice concerning the Jedi or Sith, so long as Vader's actions led to his authority being established.

Although brief in areas, it really does have some interesting material within it, especially when comparing it to the Legends lore. I had always focused on the Old Republic/Darth Bane section, but the Clone Wars/Imperial era sections might be just as interesting. Hope you're having a great start to 2020 Patrick!

I think I actually prefer Vader being somewhat more clandestine than he was in Legends. Considering that ANH retroactively implies that the Emperor has done everything he can to wipe out any knowledge of the Jedi and the Force during the reign of the Empire, having a terrifying Space Wizard killing traitors left and right in public doesn't make much sense. Source: Admiral Motti, Luke, and Han all being either dismissive or completely oblivious to the Force and its users.

I always wondered, why does the rebellion/resistance not take immensely greater care of who has access to critical information? Someone in their ranks should know that that the Empire has force users that could easily rip information from their mind, against their will, regardless of their loyalty. I'd think they would restrict information to their own force users that can resist it or at least not put people with access to such critical information out in the field, where they could easily be captured.

TIE pilot " Lord Vader your skill service is an inspiration to all the pilots in the Imperial fleet Sir !" Vader " My kill was not cause by my skill with the star fight but was the result of the Darkside. Which is not stander imperial issue to pilots. So you need to look to your inspiration else where." The series was reprinted by Marvel Comics under Star Wars voll. 1, graphic novel.

Good idea on Sidious’ part, tho wasn’t he also the one that said Vader killed 80 Jedi by himself? If I wanted to keep Vader’s true power on the low, to give him the edge on unsuspecting Jedi or potential rivals, I’d just share his military successes within the Empire to show he’s competent, but no go into the specifics. That keeps fear up, but

The EU treated Vader much better. Palpatine wanted to bring the galaxy under control thru fear in the years after the clone wars. And Vader was the face of that fear. Do as I command or Vader will destroy you as he's done here, here and here. I don't like Disney trying to seem like Palpatine wanted to hide Vader away cuz he thought the public would just see him as a traitorous force user like the Jedi and hate him rather than fear him.

I think canon has Palpatine trying to have the illusion of a normal "legitimate" government that isn't corrupt and shouldn't be feared but rather celebrated (like what north korea tries with people in north korea) while legends has Palpatine care much less about the "legitimacy" of the government and more about the power of the government. Canon is "why would you rebel? We love it here!" and legends is "Go ahead and rebel, it's your funeral..."

I was just wondering: There were pictures of Vader in imperial acadamy’s so, logically, there had to be droids and/or people taking those pictures. So what happened to the unlucky son of a gun (or gonk in the case of it being a droid) that got caught by Vader while trying to take a picture of him? I mean can you imagine? You’re there taking pictures because it’s your job and while cycling through them to pick the best one you notice Vader’s head turning towards you ever so slightly in every next picture and... this is one of the things I prefer the new canon in. If Sidious having a monster like Vader was that well known then it would've fallen a lot faster. Rumors tho are difficult to prove even if they're true. Speculative fear is a lot of times more intimidating than a direct threat

The more I read here, the more I realize that Sidious was poorly written. Any thinking person would realize "Fear lead to hatred, the one thing that any public figure does not want his people to direct against him!" and would realize "Fear will not solve these issues, what will solve these issues is by making myself loved by the majority and feared by the minority who would challenge me!" That means that Sidious, if he had truly wanted the time and energy necessary to "Plumb the depths of the Dark Side of the Force!" would have outlawed slavery on the Core Worlds and started a massive "Other Sentients are equal to Humans!" push. This stuff? It appears that Sidious' mind was being addled by the Dark side intentionally and he was too unintelligent to see it.

Sidious allowed slavery because he knew it was nearly impossible to stop and would be a waste of resources. It's kind of like the war on drugs, in the sense that you can never truly stomp it out. Instead, he taxed people for them or shook down smugglers in order to turn a profit. That said, a lot of people in the core world loved Palpatine because he brought prosperity by impoverishing many alien and outer rim worlds by unfair resource quotas and slavery or indentured servitude of whole species. Let's not forget, most people in the core worlds didn't know that he was an evil tyrant. Most humans the core worlds saw him as a philosopher king that has established order, peace and prosperity through his superior vision and will.

In my own personal head canon - and I don't know if Disney is doing this - the Empire had propaganda campaigns against the Jedi claiming the Force wasn't real and they had used trickery for centuries on the public and that all of their powers were the result of hidden technology. Palpatine hides in plain sight by basically telling the lie that he isn't a Force user because the Force isn't real, a la "the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled". And that would explain why people such as Han Solo scoff at the Jedi and even Imperial officers do as well. Basically the public would view the Jedi with as much disdain as most of our general public holds Tom Cruise's religion in. The Empire would push science and would not just be agnostic but atheistic. Granted, with the Sequel Trilogy, had the restored Palpatine succeeded, the public would've worshipped him as an immortal god king but the gloves were completely off by then concerning the [rather Satanic] Sith religion...
