The coastlines, the sand, the wind ruffling your hair, doesn’t it all sound magical?
Well, sorry to burst your bubble but Panama’s got a handful of issues no one really talks about.

Hey, people! I'm a 42-year-old Zonian Panamanian (that's a Panamanian who grew up in the Panama Canal Zone with Americans). I'll be straight-up: Language Barrier: It really depends on where you're at in Panama. While learning a bit of Spanish is cool, many Panamanians are bilingual, especially in touristy spots like restaurants and hotels. The "Mañana" Culture: This also varies by area. For example, there's a small TV repair shop in Via Argentina where the guy might say "mañana" and not mean it. But bigger businesses usually stick to deadlines. Just be aware of who you're dealing with. Safety: I've never been mugged in my 42 years here. In comparison, in places like San Francisco (USA), your car might get smashed in broad daylight. Panama isn't like that, but it depends on the area. I live in El Cangrejo, one of the safest spots. Many expats love Casco Viejo because it's beautiful, but it's close to some sketchy areas. It's best to ask locals for advice on where to live. Infrastructure: We're a bit behind here. The streets have potholes, there's a big trash problem, and the traffic jams are real. Panama is growing quickly, but we're not quite up to U.S. standards in terms of infrastructure. The Heat: OMG, the heat! It's mostly the humidity that's a killer. Even though I'm born and raised here, I still can't stand it. Just get some A/C, wear comfy clothes, and do your best to stay cool. Cashless Society: Almost nobody here carries cash anymore. We pay for everything online with apps, credit cards, or debit cards. Health Concerns: I've never had dengue, although there was an outbreak in the early '90s. The main thing to worry about is catching a cold due to the humidity and temperature changes. Culture: The so-called "machismo" culture isn't as bad as some make it out to be. While Panama can be conservative, people generally mind their own business. Catcalling mostly happens near construction sites, which sucks, but that's about it. 8.1 Racism and Classism: Racism is almost nonexistent in Panama. What we do have is classism, mostly among the wealthy who might be out of touch with reality. For the most part, Panamanians are diverse and not easily offended. If you're living in a high-end area, you might encounter some "stuck-up" attitudes, but that’s about it.

We are an Expats in Panama for the past three years... We purchased our home and live in the Alto Boquete area.... I would disagree with many of the things is this video. We have faster internet than we had back in the US, there are only a few places where we have to use CASH. We use our debit card 90% of the time, electric, cell phone, internet, water, groceries, movies, eating out, etc.... We do have a backup batteries and generator when the electricity goes down, (usually less than 5 min once every couple of weeks at max). We also have 1000 gallons of stored water tanks, just in case of water shortage. This only happens from Jan to Mar during the dry season. Our max Temp is 85 high and 65 low dry season. During Rainy season average 78 to 65F. The cost of living for our family of 3 is 1/2 the cost of the US...... with worldwide health Insurance.

The context of the video is that its best to have some familiarity with the language to navigate social circumstances. Many of the Expat Relocation services really downplay that one needs to be able to speak the language. One of the big relocation companies after being in business for 10+ years, still can't correctly pronounce many Spanish words. Even the creator of this channel doesn't pronounce Boquete or Pedasi correctly.

@mtngrl5859 Depends. Don't expect the taxi driver or the fast food joint cashier or server to speak English. If you're dealing with a professional, chances are he or she speaks English at least to some degree. Poor neighborhood, no English. Middle class neighborhood, hit or miss. Upper class neighborhood, plenty English speakers. Expats deal mostly with poor/blue collar locals, hence the perception that English is not spoken.

I was just in Panama and one of our tour guides said that English is mandatory in schools. I would expect someone as educated as a doctor to know Spanish, but at lot of people in the service industry won't know it, and while it's reasonable to expect foreigners to know at least basic Spanish, I've honestly never experienced such negative reactions to not knowing the local language, as I did from Panamanians. Even the French with their bad reputation, will attempt to communicate with you in a polite manner. But I've never had anyone react with anger to a language barrier, like I did in Panama. One lady at an ice cream shop got mad that we didn't understand the price and aggressively wrote it down on a piece of paper, and I overheard an English tourist say a local also reacted towards him with anger, because he didn't know Spanish. The taxi drivers and tour guides were all wonderful, however when it came to the service and hospitality sector, I have never met such rude and angry people. And I've even read complaints from expats who speak fluent Spanish. It was so obvious that many Panamanians, especially in the city have a lot of disdain towards foreigners and see them as inferior. So many of them would push to front of cues and just casually cut in front of foreigners, and once we were traveling on an overbooked ferry and one of the crew members was asking only the White people to make room for other passengers. And I in general noticed brown people getting better treatment. There was even a fair skinned Colombian girl, who asked to sit next to US of all people, which should be telling you everything you need to know. There was one girl at a hotel who ordered transportation to the airport for a Hispanic family, but refused to do the same for us. A lot of Panamanians are racist.

We've been here full time for over 4 years and love it. 95% of your negativity regarding Panama has never cropped up. Not speaking Spanish has never been a problem, Google translate works when needed. Yes it's hot but if you don't like it don't look at a tropical location, it's that simple. Also have never yet encountered any problems with robbery etc. That includes anywhere we have been in Panama, having already put over 50,000 km on our vehicle exploring the country. A very unnecessary negative video.

Some good points were raised in this video for those considering Panama. As a woman here I've never felt unsafe here in Panama & I wouldn't call Panama a "machismo" culture like Mexico or Colombia, it is a very traditional country. So, there is strong gender identity. So, when I first arrived here it was puzzling that if my husband & I went to a store, my husband would be the one to be spoken to first. I've learned that this is a way of showing respect, since the man is considered head of household. Note, this is how it was done in the US when I was growing up as well. In terms of weather, if one wants cooler weather then one has to go to the highlands. If one is in one of the highland towns like Boquete or Volcan/Cerro Punta one will experience milder weather. But this is the tropics, so there is a lot of rain! In a town like Boquete with a strong expat population, one can navigate with limited Spanish. While many people choose to learn Spanish, its a harder goal to achieve if one is older.

This is Panama. If you can't speak even a bit of Spanish...Stay in the states. If you want all the pampered, entitlements of the states...Stay there. We like the slow pace. We like the cash society. We enjoy going to : Naturgy, Be wireless, and Mas Movil to pay our bills in person. We have found that these trivial oddities actually create the possibility of an illusion of time actually slowing down. We come from an affluent community in Oregon. Quality of life in Jaramillo Alto is far superior to that of what we gave up. In closing, is there corruption, and social deficiencies? Yes, But a whole national party of sycophants, not here.

The point of this video, I believe, is to share some downsides of Panama, its not all beautiful beached & mountains. In general, I thought the video was positive. Cash is far more prevalent here in Panama than in other countries. Frankly, I consider that a positive, people spend less $ when they have to pay it with cash. When I purchased my car in David, I brought 10k in cash & car dealership had no problem accepting cash. This would not have been allowed in the US and definitely not in most European countries that limit cash transactions to a small amount. Many people get car loans through their banks or have money wired into the dealership as well. If I go to a major store (Pricesmart, El Rey, Panafoto etc) I have no problem using a credit card. Obviously if I go to a small Fonda then it would not be natural for them to accept credit cards. Also, local trades people I pay in cash as well.

@@mmn6748 It's been 4 months since I left my comment & watched the video. It may appear negative in some respects, there are downsides to all countries, but its important to understand different aspects of the culture. One thing to understand there is a big difference between being a visitor or even a snow bird, then to live in a country full time. I've been here 3 years, so there is definitely a learning curve. If all one listens to are people promoting Panama- for example, Panama Relocation tours-- understand that it is their business to "sell Panama". Also, much will depend where you are moving from & what you expectations are. Also, what is one's cash flow like? While Panama is affordable, in my mind it doesn't qualify as "cheap" when one compares it to many other locales in the world. What was difficulty for me living in the Highlands at first was the sheer amount of rain-over 120 inches a year- so its not just a couple of hours a day. I moved from the Pacific NW, so rain was a part of my life, but its extreme here. Yes, its beautiful & green but that is due to lots of rain.

Truth is, most US expat retirees in Panama leave within 5 years. A large percentage find out that the whole "English is widely spoken" Mantra is socio-economic. The more affluent the person (doctor, lawyer, executives, over seas-educated members of "old" families) the more likely they are to speak it. I'm tri-lingual (English/Spanish/Mandarin) and have lived here 24 years. When I first started coming here on biz English was still spoken pretty widely as there were still 2 or 3 entire generations of Panamanians alive that were living here at the same time as the 18,000 American soldiers were everywhere in the country interacting with the locals in English. Most of those locals are dead now and with the 25 year absence of the Americans so is English. More residents of Panama speak Mandarin than English, In fact, if you don't speak Spanish you will get along better here speaking only Mandarin than only English

The Panamanians are lovely, resilient people with a flare for fun and a love of family and their culture. I have more freedom here than in the US. Two coast lines of world-class beaches, fresh fish, incredible snorkeling and plenty of small towns to explore. Panama City is a cosmopolitan city with great shopping and restaurants. We have protected jungles and the nature is incredible. I feel safer here than in the US - no mass shootings here. Curious if you've actually been here? This content seems off the mark in many ways.

These are all the reasons I want to move to Panama. Every time I’ve traveled outside the U.S., the question I always hear is “why do Americans work so much?” The other question I always hear is “why do Americans only speak one language?” These are not poor, lazy people asking. These are successful, well off world travelers experiencing life to the fullest. I never have a good answer for their questions because I’ve never understood myself. I figured if I don’t get it, it’s better I live somewhere where I do get.

I'm curious...are you a expat living in Panama, or did you just come as a tourist for a week? Yes, they speak Spanish in Panama and it's hot. But those aren't reasons to not move here. Those are obvious knowns and are part of the reason you're considering a move here. Have you witnessed the "Machismo" culture? I haven't noticed it yet and there are single women walking all throughout the area. They love credit cards here, I barely use cash. It is always good to have cash, especially if you stop at a roadside stand or for tipping, but that's about it. Your video is well produced, but is just an opinion (like mine here) and I'm not sure many expats here would agree with it.

The last point made about an only cash economy is incorrect.Debit cards are used at least 70 percent in the city. The Panamian banks are quite good to deal with.Off course one needs some spanish,if one wanted to live in the UK or Ireland they would require English nobody their would speak to them in Spanish.Panama does however have some english speakers if your dealing with Lawyers, bankers and some young people have some words in Spanish. The commentator failed to mention the very low 7 per cent tax in Panama, clothes and drinking out in bars are quite cheap.Electricity is a fraction of the cost,Transportation and Gas are only a fraction of the price compared to Western Europe on the States.A cylinder of gas here is less than 5 dollars.Panama is the only country in Central America to have an under ground metro station, which is very effictive and fast and costing only 50 or less if your retired.Woman at the age of 55 years receive a discount, for medication, meals, and transportation including International flights, its 62 years for a male that can receive such benefits, which many countries do not give.Panama offers a great shopping experience with some large shopping Malls dotted all around the city.Taxis are also extreemly cheap here. The pace can be slow, but many of us here hung up our working boots many years ago and dont need to be travelling the roads here so much. Its more of a problem during rush hours, when people are returning home from work,it does not get so congested during the daytime. I personally do not need a car,as public transportation especially the train metro is so fast and gets me to the Airport or half a dozen shopping mals within 15 to 20 minutes.I've lived here for 11 years yes the climate can be tough at times, but the pains in my bones have left me,being away from the consent damp wet climate in the UK.I suffer no pains here and dont need to wear stockings,a light T shirt and shorts, and an umbrella if it rains, but its always warm here.We expats well most of us live in fairly safe areas and never have problems with thieft, its rare and far between if one lives in the better areas of the city. The driving here can be a bit reckless, but its something one has to accept and the odd pot hole, but overall their are some very nive parks to walk the dog, play basket ball or just relax.

99% of Expats really! The creator of this video have not done a good job. Your point like Panamanians live a slow pace is true, they care more about preserving family time. And if you are retired you are looking for a slow pace and peace, for the most part. When looking for a relocation is better to travel and check different places. Not all are the same and it depends on each individual needs and desires. Most Expats I know here are doing fine with the little or no Spanish. They live a happy life.

The title is a bit misleading, but, anyway. As someone that began a relationship with Panama more than 30 years ago, married to a Panamanian for 30+ years, and a legal resident for 10+ years currently living in Panama, I can attest that everything in this video is true and more accurate and honest than all the "Panama is paradise" videos that abound. Most everything stated in this video can be verified if you care or know where to look, such as, the National Police, Ministry of Security, Ministry of Health, English Proficiency Index, and UNODC websites. Now, if you stick to the tourist trap areas or expat bubbles you are more likely to not experience or notice the issues discussed in this video.

You failed to mention other important things. For example, first, the street do not have names, so one needs to buy Travel Pass from Verizon at $10/day, or some other services from other cellular providers to use GPS on the phone to drive to places. Second, people living in Panama do not have addresses, hence, we cannot write to them unless they purchase a post office (P.O.) box for letters to be sent. Third, there are no dark green vegetables, such as, broccoli, kale, bok choy, Chinese broccoli, spinach, etc... given as much as rain water that they have there. Fourth, it is not fun to get bug bites everyday, from sand fleas on the beach in the evening, mosquitoes, and other bugs that we do not see, but only saw many swelling right afterward. In short, the insects are small, fast, swift, and abundant. We must have insect repellent at all times. Panama is fun to visit because there are many things to do from taking water taxi to visit various islands for swimming, eating seafood, snorkeling, going to the rain forest, seeing waterfalls, etc....

Been in the interior of Panama for 8 years and as soon as my house sells I am leaving. Most expats dont make it past 4 years. The main problem was in the local news. The single mothers cant afford quality food when they get pregnant or when they raise their children and the brains dont develop properly. Dont shoot me, it was in the news. So the average IQ is under 84 and in the interior its around 70. Look up what that means and you will see why the service is so bad, why nobody cares about anything, why the country is falling apart, and why you should not live in a neighborhood where the peoples economic status is less than yours.

And then a Panamanian comes across this video ... 🤬 AND, you don't show your face ... 🤔 It either comes across as "I am getting paid to tell you NOT to move there" or "I've heard all these things about Panama" ... Truth is, I feel safer here than in Miami, where I lived for 10yrs, yes, traffic is hell, 1 mile in about an hour in peak times specially on paydays ... Yes, not everyone speaks English in a country where Spanish is the official language and English is taught as a second language but NOT to make it a second language by nature for many ...🤷‍♂ I can say that yes, right now[2024] I feel NO difference, with my local salary compared to my salary in Miami, that cost of life is either the same or a little more, but, I make do and live comfortable ... 😁 Many youtubers, just make a video, about a place based on a, maybe, 7 day visit and become erudites on the visited country 😡 ... In that same situation, I can tell lots of Panamanians, NOT to visit the US since it is more expensive, and, depending where they are going, they will be looked down and treated poorly ... Guess it happened to me and then I called my boss, told him what had happened and that I was going back to HQ and that someone else needed to go to this place, the same people who looked down at me and called me a few nice accolades, had to get their tails between their legs and be taught how to use specific hard and software, by someone from "a banana eating country" ... So, before giving advice on why NOT to move to a place, at least, live there a year AND then make your video ... Friendly advice

@@angelharris3727 As a Panamanian you should be ashamed for putting your people down and not exposing the root causes. As Panamanians, we are known for our warm, social nature. A friendly 'Buenas' or a smile is common in our interactions, though sometimes it might take a bit longer to warm up to new acquaintances. We are also known for our generosity, often sharing the little we have, which many foreigners have experienced firsthand. While customer service in Panama may not always match the standards found in some other countries, this isn't necessarily a reflection of the people. In many large corporations, such as Walmart, employees undergo extensive customer service training, including seminars and evaluations by mystery shoppers. This level of training and assessment is often not present in Panama, where many stores are owned by foreigners who may not prioritize such investment in their staff. I've observed the difference in customer service here compared to the United States, where even stores owned by individuals from diverse backgrounds, like those in Manhattan, display varying levels of customer engagement. In my view, the key to improving service standards lies in companies investing in training, as is common in American businesses. This approach could enhance the customer experience in Panama, leveraging the innate friendliness of its people.
