They may be packed with features but they also lack the basic package together and they lack the modern processing found in every smartphone today. I'm looking for few simple specs: 1) big sensor and fast lens for low noise in low light (shooting on the streets at night), 2) 4K 60p for good quality, future proof high resolution with smooth motion capture, 3) stabilization for handheld shooting. Right now I can get some of those but not all and the best options are still quite expensive as here with the 50mm f/1.4. Panasonic has big sensor but crops in 60p. Fujifilm crops much less but has no IBIS and the lenses aren't that fast or stabilized either. Of course if you don't need video and don't print large you can use 20 year old DSLR and you'll have still fine images for web use but that's not what we are for, right?

Gerald Undone well deserved shout out. Both of you guys provide rational thoughts in a sea of click bait. Thanks for that! I feel like two things are holding me back from a pre purchase: 1- lenses. I am. I’m not super fired up about making the switch to FF from my gh5 and basically keeping the same bokeh or even less... running any of the fast lenses on the gh5 I’m able to get a FF 2.8 look. Moving to a FF f4 look doesn’t seem like an upgrade... now, wham sigma drops a 24mm F1.4 my attention will officially be grabbed. This seems like a timing issue and it’s unfortunate that Sigma isn’t able to have these lenses ready to go in April. Maybe this is an agreement between pana Leica and sigma. Maybe this is a camera conspiracy... 2- auto focus. My GH5 is totally workable, but I wish that it was better. I would love to see the af functional in VFR. For the work I do 120af would be super helpful... I think pana is making an error releasing the camera in the same manner as the gh5 with major upgrades needed at release to meet the promised expectation. I think eventually they delivered, but I think the initial letdown is hard on the brand. I’m pretty sure the a7iii will do what I need, just wish the 120 was higher quality in fact all the video... All I want is the perfect camera...

I think it's a good first step for Panasonic FF. But I think people are upset, myself included, that we were really hoping for 4k60p without crop at 10 4:2:2. Now if they're able to do that with their paid update, that would be a very worthwhile upgrade imho and would make me highly interested in this if a7siii never comes out. That being said, I do also agree that the focus issue is huge and Canon & Sony have much better currently. Whether this is an "early version" or not, I am surprised that they would have this displayed this camera with such a bad auto focus if they plan on making a major over haul to it. Meaning I don't see a major update by the time this camera is released, maybe also in a future update? Idk, my eyes are still firmly waiting on the A7siii, meanwhile I'll keep shooting on my T7i and just upressing to 4k so I can shoot at 60fps, even if it is 8 bit.

The GH5 was killer out of the box. It was only later that the AF debacle happened. But even with that, it was still the best mirrorless video camera, by far. The issue is that it feels like Panasonic is trying to entice video shooters with a camera that wasn't made with them in mind. They're marketing it much the same way they did the GH5, right down to giving Griffin Hammond one to make a documentary with, but as you said it's not a GH5 and it's not comparable. That they're then adding what is essentially a video tax to get features that should be in it for the $2500 they're asking for, to me, is even more annoying. I really wanted to like it, I'm a Panasonic shooter, but I think most criticism is valid.

Indeed, I really want to like this camera, as well as the S1R. I was even going to be an early adopter, all they needed to do was release something decent, and the money was their's. It's funny that the release actually stopped me in my tracks from ordering it. Now I'm really trying to find a reason to buy it, but the GH5/GH5s are simply better video cameras - full stop. I can already use my current speedboosters for similar dof, etc, etc. The gradeability will also make the picture out of the the GH5s better. For video, FF only really gives an advantage at dof at this point.

I like everything about this camera except that Panasonic is holding back features (even if they plan to charge extra for them later) and that they have not improved the major issues of their 2 year old GH5. It's maximum price gouging for minimum effort. Panasonic needs to drop the price or provide something more than recycled features in a bloated GH5. Why is AF still unreliable, why is 10-bit 4K60 still external, why is 4K60 cropped to the size of a GH5+Speed booster, why no anamorphic mode, why does the dynamic look like 10-stops, and why does the image get softer very stop over ISO 3200? I know the S1 will excel in other areas compared to the GH5 but these features are the ones I use the most and I don't see any improvements in those areas. 14-stops of Dynamic Range with V-Log is the only thing that sounds great so far but unless they add 12 or 14-bit Raw we'll be squeezing that into a highly compressed 10-bit codec. Isn't that what Sony tried to do with S-Log 3? I hope the Production models show much better results for AF, Noise and Dynamic Range for video because everything I've seen so far doesn't look any better than a GH5.

I mean it will have the edge on Sony on 4K 30p after getting a PAID update, after an UNKNOWN amount of time. Meanwhile, the A7iii is almost a one year old camera, offering full frame 4k at 500$ cheaper(without calculating any discounts mind you). I am glad Panasonic is making full frame cameras now but a7 easily beats this in value imo. What I find interesting is the Full HD capabilities. If they can make stellar full hd video that can attract some people.

Given my love and great experience with my GH5, I am definitely interested in the S1. Regarding specs, the S1 has not been released. So, there will be features that won't appear or be announced until the S1 is released and after release. I like seeing pre-launch videos for upcoming cameras, but, I don't base my purchase decisions on these videos. What bugs me is when a YT creator makes conclusions about a camera before it's even been released. I get that they want to create content. But, don't make absolutist judgments until you have the final product in your hand. (EDIT: I think it's erroneous to put the Sony A7III above the S1. For one, the A7III does not shoot 10-bit. A huge difference for professionals, not vloggers. The A7III is a vloggers camera, in my opinion, not a camera I would consider for filmmaking given its 8-bit limitation.)

Kaleb, I posted this on Gordon Laing's video review of the S1 he just made a few days ago. I'd be interested in your comments on my response to the review in regard to S1 peaking feature. Not to beat a dead horse, but to drive a point home to at least my satisfaction I set up a peaking test. I used the Panasonic S1, the Panasonic GH5, the Panasonic G85, the Nikon Z6, and the Fujifilm X-H1, all using third party lenses. With the GH5, G85, the Z6, and the X-H1 there was absolutely no change in the quality and intensity of the peaking settings between using peaking to set the focus up and after the camera started rolling. Sadly, after checking BOTH the EVF and the LCD of the S1 both showed a diminishment in the quality and intensity of peaking once the shot was rolling. This diminishment is SIGNIFICANT, at least on my S1---I'd say at 70% or more %% drop--sometimes very difficult to see, especially on the EVF. The effect of this is that if you change the focus to another object while rolling you either focus past it before you see it, or you focus past it because you're not sure if your focus is not quite right---and most often it isn't. How do I know that? Because if I stop the shot after shifting focus the original quality and intensity immediately appear. When that happens I find the focus I ended up with was not accurate. Either not focusing far enough, or focusing past the object you are simply guessing. It seems to me the peaking feature of the S1 is calibrated to be its best, most viewable, and most accurate before the shutter is pressed with a SIGNIFICANT drop off once you start rolling. Why? This is not the case with the other four cameras I tested---and two of them were Panasonics. The peaking of the GH5 and the G85 are just...okay ....But they are stable before and after the shot is made, and pretty accurate. The Nikon is excellent---very easy to use and accurate. Even the gosh-awful Sony peaking is better than the S1---and I didn't think it was possible that anyone could have worse peaking than Sony. (Silly me). By a hair I think the Fuji X-H1 is best, clean, easy to see without obscuring the shot, and very accurate. The Fuji folks have done it right---and they keep making the X-H1 and X-T3 better. Will someone with some contacts or influence pass this on to the Panasonic people. Maybe they know and don't care. Maybe it was done intentionally for reasons I can in no way surmise. Nikon has done a few analogous things on the Z6, but nothing as egregious as the S1 peaking problem.

My problem with your counterpoints for auto focus and lenses is that you say it will get better over time, which is probably true (I don't think it will be to the level you think at least for auto focus) but the camera companies ask people to by the camera now. Not later. Also firmware should not be paid for, if they just charged me a little more for the camera I would be okay with that. In addition to that, the firmware for most of those features feels like the camera wasn't ready for launch. Some of those features should have already come with the camera, it shouldn't be a fee for me to get those features. And this just doesn't go for Panasonic, back when sony lens options and auto focus were shit I gave them the same flack.

I'm glad that Panasonic is finally moving past micro-four-douche and installing full frame sensors. However, I can't bring myself to buy a Panasonic today, due to their terrible behavior when they sold me a bad camera. I bought a camera from them in 2015 that was faulty. They refused to fix it and refused to take the camera back and give a refund. They wanted me to pay hundreds of dollars to them to fix their brand new broken camera. I even sent a letter to the CEO and never got a reply. They basically stole $900 from me for a paper weight.

Why would they release a half-baked camera then charge for firmware upgrade? Did Panasonic hire Canon executive to run the company? I agree with the other people who are disappointed in the specs. You are a Panasonic guy so you are defending them but if you were honest you will be saying that this camera is a no-go. 15 min recording limit? Are they going backwards? Are we in the year 2000? Maybe the reason they took so long to release a full-frame camera is because they don't have the capabilities to make a good one.

So many cameras coming out this year... but for a mix of stills/video i'd still choose the Fuji system in the sub $2-3K price bracket.. if you're video centric then it's probably the GH5s, and if you are video only then go with a rigged up BMPCC4K. 4:2:0 is just not enough color to grade with. There's a reason why the 1dxii is still a preferred system.. it's 8 bit 4:2:2 which grades quite well
@professionalpotato47644 жыл бұрын
Does it really make a huge difference? In Gerald Undone's testing, the difference between 420 and 422 is very minor, and only shows up if you do extreme grades like turning blue into green or something.

ok: photopraphy video hybrid, full frame, IBIS+ gh5s low light, 10-bit HLG, better autofocus then gh5(s). not ok: low bitrates and too much 8bit, UHD and no c4k, 1.5x crop in UHD 60p, heating, future firmware updates, rolling shutter performance, weight. reading the specs and seeing samples this seems a fine camera to put in a bag with gh5s.

Problem about the fact that the s1 only have 150mbps at 10bit: 1, 150mbps cannot resolve 10bit 4:2:2 while the 400mbps all I codec can. 2, the 150mbps codec has a lot of problems when editing. 3, The lack of 400mbps All I codec means that a lot of people have to buy a Ninja V, so further increase in it's already steep prices and it's bulky size. 4, The 150mbps codec have some problems with skintone in vlog l, so imagine what will happen when using the even flatter vlog.

Thanks Caleb. This reminds me of an old Spanish joke. A guy applies for a job. During the interview for the position the manager explains that the initial salary is going to be just 1000 Euros, but later on there will be a significant raise up to 4000 Euros and perdiem, and extras, and bonuses, medical and dental insurance.... Then the manager asks the applicant, What do you think? And the guy says, I will come later on. This is exactly the same. In order not to lose clients Panasonic, again, hits the market with SMOKE, a promise of, an poorly graded camera that will be upgraded in the future, and, to top it off, if you PAY for the upgrade. I have the GH4 and the GH5 and Panasonic is not going to fool me again with promises. I will come later on.

Not being funny but people who buy this camera will barely use most of the features, which in essance beats the entire purpose of having comparisons. Case in point is me. Check out my IG: tydesilvaphotograpy if you dont believe me and revisit my comment. I feel like I paid for features that I dont use. I still can't understand why on Earth Panasonic's being so defensive of their contrast-based AF and so stubborn about upgrading to phase or hybrid AF. While their flavor of contrast AF does seem to work fairly well for photo (at least on my G80 when there is decent light), it is just terrible for video and way outdated to boot. I hope they rethink this sooner than later and put phase AF into their GH6 (or whatever's next) just like Olympus did with their cameras.

Nope, I don't care if it is a completely different thing. Panasonic cameras had the advantage of 10bit, 4k60 and high bitrates. That is why people bought those. This new camera has none of those. I also still think it is crazy to buy a camera based on the promise of a feature update at some point in time. And without those the S1 is objectively a weaker video camera in every aspect (maybe except the ibis) than the Sony A7III. People voicing criticism about the S1 are not wrong at all. They are right. The only thing wrong here is the title of the video.
@grumpywiseguy59925 жыл бұрын
For video, this camera is no better than the 2 year old GH5 much less the GH5S. There are now FOUR new systems out in the wild.. When are all of the camera reviewers going to come up with how a normal human being should decide between these systems. If there needs to be a decision. I don't see a jump in innovation that justifies the price!!! You ALL are still using GH5 for your bread and butter videos even after 2 years. But all the reviewers need new cameras that they can talk us into buying through affiliate links. I like your accessories videos the best!! Have a great day.

Can the s1 do 24 fps... How many stills per second not that i need it..just curious.. as far as autofocus is concerned I don't know where to stand on that traditionally fillmers use manual focus.. I do understand that that's not the target market here but whatever...no raw.in still? Did i just hear you say that? thats a deal breaker for almost any 📷. I did address this in another of your videos but I want to stay that again I'm very curious because I want to like this camera but the image samples on DP as far as fine detail terrible. From what I've seen in the portraits that they have released my Ricoh gr does better.. so again I don't know if they've addressed that the sensor is going to mainly Cater to New lenses.. I have definitely found that M Glass an LTM react with differently with different sensors.. I have a very old m-mount German lens that looks amazing on my A7 but looks terrible on Fuji.. I'm curious what Panasonic a saying about this.. because seriously those portraits that they released at least the ones that dpreview has are absolutely terrible and I don't mean in technique I mean an overall detail

No they are not wrong. Panasonic made something that people are not waiting for in a 2019 camera. If others can do it, and even Nikon can do it, then Panasonic with all its video knowledge certainly would be able to do it. Their specs are wrong and it IS crippled to protect their Micro 4/3 market. That is Pana's main problem with this camera. BTW your video's are mostly good, but here you do not have to defend Pana for their mistakes.

Panasonic need to release something that is a step forward on the GH5 and G85 cause these models aren't it.. they have chosen to focus on sensor size but its at the expense of other great features and the net result is a step backwards for videographers. autofocus should have been the priority and why would you remove the fully articulating screen ?? that is ridiculous and makes no sense..

I am surprised how Panasonic's new cameras have somewhat been hit as if they were false advertising or lying about their cameras. These set of cameras did not receive any of the hype I thought they would. I use Panasonic cameras for the overall user experience. It does seem like Sony has the lead on auto focus, but that is it. No one is talking about ISO performance anymore now that this camera has arrived. What happened to the lack of dual card slots in other cameras and the praise for this camera offering it? The 4k 60 fps is not a lie, it is capable with an external recorder. that is not a lie. Most cameras had said that they were capable of it. Fuji is the only one that hyped and made clear the ability to do it internally. Everything this camera has done seems to lack any compromises... maybe the autofocus compared to Sony. Panasonic can easily smash the competitors.

Imagine the backlash they will get for charging extra money for a firmware update coz when people already bought the hardware , it makes no sense to them to be charged to "unlock" features that they perceive they paid for already. & the precedence has already been set by Fuji to ever improve each camera with free firmware updates. Pitchforks and torches will be at hand.

9:58 I really don't get why everyone dislikes this. The only situation in which the flip out screen is better is filming yourself, IMO for every other use case it's actually worse. ... I mean, it happens to all companies to let a bad potato slip out of the production line. Panasonic have been producing some of the most used broadcast cameras in the world. The Varicam was also vastly used on film sets before Arri and Red obscured all other manufacturers. Any big company will have quality problems. It sucks, but hey, the GH4 and GH5 are both some of the most used video cameras in the world and GH4s still hold-up well for most pros. It really does suck that they didn't accepted to get it under repair warranty. Unfortunately this happens will all big compagnies. I feel you, but Panasonic does make some of the best cameras out there tho. It's a simple reality that big compagnies will let slip a batch of badly made products, at least on this consumer level. Although I had my fair share of trouble with Panasonic P2s, they were solid cameras in their prime time, and it was mostly because of mishandling. Panasonic customer service is a nightmare tho. Their technician came in my production house and never repaired anything. Then I was hired later on and had to do his job. So I agree about that. Olympus seems to have a much better warranty, and even a pro coverage program.
