Gen X here , only use KZbin. I grew up without Social Media - I use email, txt, and even snail mail. There's something a little magical about sending and receiving something handwritten ( with drawings) instead of a post. And guess what? We still use MySpace 😅😅😅. The App isn't available on the app stores but is still running and available if you go to the MySpace website 😅. Everyone under 50 can't believe it, but it still does the job without the propaganda, hate and algorithms.

My thoughts are this: If I cancelled/refused to buy every product and/or service that I didn't agree with from an ethical standpoint, I wouldn't even be able to buy groceries. I actually tried to only buy ethically and domestically made clothing for a while, and not only were the options super limited and not my style, but the cost was astronomical. The same thing happened with toothpaste, laundry detergent, and refillable shampoo bottles. Even taking an ethical stance on a single thing make your life exponentially more difficult and more expensive. I don't agree with the unethical actions of any of these companies. I drive a hybrid, and it makes me angry to know that the battery was likely made from materials mined by children. But everything else I own has been produced on some level by kids too. You can't create change by selectively choosing one singular product or service and boycotting it. The entire system needs to change from the top down, and that is so difficult to do because, unfortunately, even life necessities like food and housing fall under the category of morally reprehensible.

I want to leave it desperately, too, but I also can't due to the connections I only have there. I tried to hedge against this back in 2015, multiple times, but I couldn't gain any traction and so that never happened. It's not so much that "we" gave Zuck too much control - it's that our elected officials did. Facebook was only one of numerous sites. Other sites came up competing against it competently, and Facebook bought them until there were none. This is what deregulation looks like in the real world. Regulations are necessary in a free society and they have to be rigorously enforced because *_every single time they're not_* something terrible happens to the citizenry. Every. Single. Time. And yet we learn nothing. I'm still looking for the alternative. Maybe LiveJournal will make a comeback. Or something else that's been in someone's hobbies for a few years will crop up and gain momentum. Otherwise, we're going to have to get back to using telephones and the USPS. The one thing that's certain is that we can never again allow any individual or group of individuals to "own the town square". These are civil places for citizens to engage freely. That can never be privatized.

I don’t want to support meta further, but my saved post and all the accounts I follow allow me to stay updated and informed on all the issues I care about and they also prompt me to think critically and etc . . . And then there is the mindset that this is what people like Zuck and Musk want, to run us from these places that have been vital for organizing and making information accessible to our fellow friends, neighbors and colleagues who are disabled and where it’s much harder for them to get out into in person organizing engagements. I say all of this so say I just don’t know. But that I’m going to process this.

For me personally it’s not even about politics. Aside from the practical uses of social media (ie organizing, buy nothing groups, marketplace, educational/support/advice pages) I really hate it as a whole. It’s moved our way of socializing to a very non- tangible experience which truly hurts humanity in my opinion. Our mental health is actually suffering from too much screen time. That’s already been proven. We know what we need to do to be a healthier functioning society. We need to share the same physical space to truly connect and experience the full depth of benefits that come with socialization. Even a phone call is better than how we are “socializing” now. I dream that people will eventually become bored with social media and that it will not be the “cool” thing to do anymore. I am with you though on the necessity for alternatives for things like organizing/selling.

I'm planning on leaving and most of my friends -- mostly people in the arts & sciences -- have already moved Facebook to the back of the closet in terms of social media usage. Even though it's kind of a pain to download all the personal stuff from Facebook, it feels kind of necessary, much the way dropping X/Twitter did.

The only thing I used fb for from 2020 until 24 was to message my nephew, i could do that a different way now. Last year, my cat was diagnosed with diabetes and there is a group that has literally saved his life. I trust them a million times more than my vet, who treats him like a dog. I can't leave fb. 😕

They've been talking about banning tik tok for at least a decade now. Along with censoring and restricting access to other social media sites and the internet in general. There has been plenty of time to come up with an alternative.

I am in Australia, and my husband works for a non-profit, writing grant proposals and applying for government programs. For years now, one of the prerequisites for these programs is having a FB/IG/X presence, with a minimum number of followers. The really stupid part was that they *bought* the followers through a third-party app, and that was perfectly acceptable to the government department in question.

What about email? It is not the case that everyone needs to know what you had for breakfast. I was on Facebook for a few years, but I left it years ago. No regrets.

quitting all things meta was incredibly cathartic especially after I found out about how facebook enable the genocide in Myanmar then Gaza. Yea best decision I’ve ever made. never joined TikTok either.

There’s absolutely alternatives to these Facebook groups. Tell your friends and family to start using Discord.

I never touch my FB. I deleted the app but I can’t delete the account because it was under an old email. I can’t get rid of Instagram for this as well. I hated them early on. I should have cancelled when I could. I haven’t missed them.

A lot of international people in poorer countries unfortunately are relying on facebook too. I was looking up something from a dream I had, and found that there are schools in rural Nigeria that use facebook pages to communicate with the community about their small school.

I left Facebook when I found out about Cambridge Analytica years ago. I have an account still, only to check Lost Dogs in my area if I see a dog running free. I used to run a group there, and enjoyed the community. I couldn't do it anymore after learning how corrupt he was. I copied all the images I had shared in that group, the documents, patterns, spreadsheets etc that were shared in our group. Every single thing I wanted was copied. It took quite a while, but I treated it like a full time job at the time. I have no regrets...in fact it saved me hours each day that I used to spend on that platform. I too left Twitter when he took over. Never been on TikTok, so I can't speak to that. I still have an Instagram account, but only go there maybe 6 times a year or so if I'm enticed by a podcaster etc...it will be no big deal to dump that one as well.

I dropped facebook in 2015 and never looked back.. Only social media platform I'm on is KZbin and LinkedIn, but LikedIn is done as soon as I retire in 2-3 years, if not sooner. If I don;t have your number in my contacts or your email address in my mail application, I just don;t need to talk with you. Leaving social media was the healthiest think I have every done.

I heard this today: So sorry, Lady, that they are going to ban TikTok. That's going to hit all the earning creators so hard. If I were in your shoes I'd be so frustrated. Take care!

I've been enjoying the meta experience on all platforms less and less for awhile now. The newest bs was exactly what I needed to finally leave.

Claiming Meta is the only way people can stay connected with family members is pure bullshit. I quit facebook in 2007 and have no problems keeping up with family or friends. Can nobody write emails any more? Have you lost the ability to call people on the phone? Send a text? Stop making excuses for laziness.

A lot of folks I know are shifting group communication from facebook to Signal and opting out of social media. But that does take some organizing to get off the ground. I personally have deleted my twitter and insta accounts (and have been off facebook since the 2010s). A lot of my social activities have a big in person component, which helps me. The people who know me know that I use social media so infrequently that their best bet is to contact me directly if they want to get a hold of me. I've never been a big fan of social media and I'm a big advocate for making hyper local connections and organizing comminty action that way, but that's just how I operate. I'm also not a content creator, so I can see how this could be a really complex decision to make.
