I was tossing a frisbee around with a friend, and we were yelling out the names of our fancy throws like Philip Seymour Hoffman. I yelled out "WHITE CHOCOLATE!" and did a spin jump as I threw the frisbee, landing on one foot and tearing a calf muscle. To this day, I still feel pain if I run or walk too carelessly, and I call it my "white chocolate injury". I think of Hoffman's character almost every day 😅

Losing Phillip Seymour Hoffman is still one of the most tragic Hollywood deaths. He was young and at the top of his career. I wonder a lot about what amazing performances he would have given in the future. Even when he's not the star of the movie he's still excellent. RIP PSH!

I remember watching My Boyfriend's Back in the year 1999, and popping up on screen was the man who would become a legend, "Phil Hoffman." Before he was "Philip Seymour Hoffman". Just chasing a zombie down a highschool hallway, wielding an axe. The amount of talant this man has is off the charts... but for me, he will always be "Chuck," the would-be zombie-slayer.

Your speech at the end reminds me of an audition I did, alongside my brother, for a musical they were making about our zoo. Granted, it was for an unpaid extra role, but still, I would be on stage in one of Antwerp's most well known music halls and this for 10 nights. And then, at some point during the audition, the director does an improv exercise and asks me to an impression of a gorilla in front of all these other people. Now, I can imagine that a lot of people would think: "No, I'm not doing this. This is embarassing," but I realized there that if I held back right there that they might not cast me, so I just did it, without thinking. Okay, I wasn't in the final production as a gorilla, but I was still in it, along with my brother and I feel it's because I wasn't embarrased to be silly, to do ridiculous things and just go and be crazy. Keep in mind, I'm not a singer or a dancer and yet I ended up preforming in a musical for 10 nights. One of the greatest moments of my life.

This made me miss Hoffman again. I saw him first in Magnolia, then Owning Mahowny and Love Liza made me a fan for life. In. 5-50 years or so, I'm sure we'll get him back as an AI duplicate, but it can't possibly be the same. Glad you are back and yes, absolutely loved this video. I always felt it was common knowledge to perceive PSHoffman's role in this movie as such but I guess probably not. Most people don't really imbibe an actor's career the way some of us do I guess. I was already a fan when this came out and I watched it immediately upon rental and damn I was impressed that he went that way with his career. It made him so much more relatable to me anyway that he was willing to have fun like that and not be one of "those" guys. I'm sure you know what I'm saying here vs the leading actors in that time period looking to be the next Brando or whatever. Not a single one of those old school major A list guys ever had a career devoid of schlock, regardless of how they may have elevated said schlock. Immense respect.

I first took notice of him in Boogie Nights and then in Happiness, playing these socially awkward perverts.. Then Magnolia and Talented Mr Ripley. All those movies are at least interesting or leftfield. He became a actor that i searched for and if he was in the movie, i would more likely watch it. Came as a fantastic surprise how well his son confidently slayed Licorice Pizza.

Along came polly was the first PSH film I ever saw, at the time i didn’t know who he was but i loved him in this, i use to think to myself as a teenager, if i ever became an actor, i didn’t want to play the main or villain, i wanted to play the bumbling comic relief, because at the end of the day - that’s who you remember from films like this. It's funny, since this was the first film I saw him in, when i saw him acting in films like capote and winning best actor, i felt proud - "good for him, going from what i thought was one of his first pictures and getting to oscar win a few years later" haha side note, would it be weird to request a Back Focus episode on you Brandon? been following you since your reenactment videos, would love to have an in depth video on your acting history anyway, keep up the awesome videos

Well firstly, I gotta agree. I can't remember single thing about the main plot of Along Came Polly, but I can remember ALL of Hoffman's scenes, especially the pratfall. It was a truly inspired performance in an otherwise forgettable film. That being said, I gotta defend Elordi a bit. Hoffman had something with comedic weight to work with, a director that cared, and enough of an incentive to raise his profile a bit more in the mainstream. As small as those things may seem, they do add up in the end. I've only seen clips of The Kissing Booth movies, but they don't seem to be made with the same kind of tact. They were made quick and cheap to capitalize on the surprise success of the first one. For all the generic criticisms you can throw at Along Came Polly, Hoffman was given some room to work his magic, whereas Elordi was probably told to just play a generic hunk. I remember you saying you had a wonderful experience on Bart Got A Room and American Pie and I do think that makes a difference (please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!). It's all about the on set environment and it seems Elordi wasn't given the support he wanted or direction he needed to make those movies something he was proud of. Love your work as always, naturally!
