Why Playing Hardcore is Sane and Insane at the Same Time

Hardcore gaming embodies determination, will power, and insanity. For gamers it's the gateway that separates softcore scum and the true chads of the community. This mentality helps hardcore fans get over the fact that we're wasting our time and get to experience far less fun than those who play softcore, otherwise known as intelligent people. But this time wasting and stressful game mode has a long history, a dedicated player base, and would be sane to play if any company knew how to host a server correctly.
Thanks for watching! I wanted to cover some more meta aspects of gaming, and I felt like hardcore nonsensicality seemed like a good place to start. Akin to a hardcore enjoyer, I'm spending my days grinding. In this case I'm working on lots of scripts, content, and ideas for videos, so if you enjoyed what you saw, I'd really appreciate if you Liked, Commented, Subscribed, and even hit the bell. Maybe the bell's playing hardcore and won't respawn if enough people hit it.

I think the key takeaway from the video is in some of the examples of permadeath games mentioned. Rogue and Fire emblem... games that are turn based where the hardcore aspect is tempered by cautious careful decision making, strategy and deep knowledge of the game. Then there's diablo 2 where you take one step and 900 gloams shoot 1.21 gigawatts of electricity through you from offscreen and 3 weeks of your life dies in front of you I'm so glad there's a youtuber dedicated to making videos about how much gloams suck. I played hardcore mode on every game that gave me the options since original diablo 2. And I remember perfectly finding the concept extremely stupid, concept I had to understand by myself after trying it and losing some characters. The thing is, softcore became incredibly dull, tasteless, boring, and before I noticed, beeing able to force my way to victory by respawing again and again became the stupid concept. Hardcore is super addictive, sure you can get mad or sad (when you start playingHC, then you just accept it and get better) but it is SO MUCH MORE REWARDING. Everytime you're close to death, you actually feel alive, when you win you feel really great, you feel like you deserved your win, that you didn't cheat to have it. Sure it sounds elitist, but it's not, you don't do it to brag, you do it for yourself, to enhance your gaming experience, to challenge your skill, your knowledge, your reflexes, it's just awesome.

@Hellschwarz
@Hellschwarz 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree, especially on the hardest difficulty part. Many games just amp up the enemies with more hp and damage, which costs time, not more. A lot of games also have a shitty scaling or bullshit mechanics. Playing them in hard-core makes it feel frustrating and undeserved. This is exactly why I played witcher 2 on hard-core, where the most broken boss is at the end with almost instakill if you fuck up that one mechanic.
@Ekainen
@Ekainen 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hellschwarz well for the "hardest difficulty" it sure depends on the game. Hack n slash are usually fair but some games are just dumb and can only be beat with soft or hard exploits, looking at you Skyrim's legendary mode.

@@Hellschwarz So a lot of games are just bad then. It's actually quite rare that I play a game that feels like it is just scaled in a tedious way (only example that comes to mind for me is Horizon Zero Dawn). Usually it is the other way around, that games are too easy (like Cyberpunk). I played another game that I really enjoyed, Curse of the Dead Gods, I read in the reviews before playing it that the hard difficulty was too punishing and bullshit, but for me it didn't feel like that at all, everything before unlocking the harder difficulties just felt like the tutorial to me.

I think to say there's no consequences is silly, there's many penalties for death and they only become greater as you accumulate wealth and so on. Not to mention losing XP on higher difficulties, players can steal from your corpse etc. Veteran players might not struggle with this sure but there's a whole new bucket of fans jumping into this. There's plenty of small mechanics to learn you may never see if you can't reach them on hardcore etc like runewording etc

To me, a lot of my enjoyment of games is from a "what if?" point of view. I like fantasy and sci-fi themed games, because those open up a LOT of "what if?" scenarios. But when you ask a "what if?" question, the implied end of that question is "... assuming all else not stipulated was the same as real life?" "What if we had crazy technology that could do all sorts of crazy stuff (in a universe like my own?)" Real life is consistent, and so any games based on real life, I expect to behave consistently, at least unto their own rules. If your game doesn't have an in-game explanation for how you can come the fuck back to life, then when I die, I fully expect to be d-e-a-d dead, and hounestly, if I'm not, I'm kind of miffed. If your game takes the Borderlands approach, and offers a way to explain respawning, then fine, that's totally cool It makes sense, within the world that has been created. If your world is completely different from anything in real life except for a few minor things here and there, like (and IDK why this came to mind) Uniracers, then that's also fine. Your game, like Uniracers, probably doesn't even feature anything resembling death, anyway. So if a game has a hardcore mode, and doesn't feature some explanation for how I've come back to life after a gruesome death (even a super-flimsy one), I'm playing hardcore. If Hardcore is locked until I beat things normally, then I don't feel like I've actually beaten the game until I've done the hardcore mode, because non-permanent deaths, in my own personal head-canon, are all taking place in some manner of training simulation. If it's not got a hardcore mode, and doesn't offer any sort of explanation, then it's a -1 to the game. Never immediately damning on it's own, but still renders a 10/10 impossible, even if everything else is, in my eyes, literal perfection.

I feel like I've always liked games of the hardest hardcore settings because I was initially playing EverQuest in 1999, but further than that I've been a recluse and depressed my whole life, and also afraid of failure, so the idea of a grueling world where it might be over for a character, but I get another chance was very appealing. If get a computer again (3 months sober, not due to choice) I will buy Diablo 2 remastered and turn it into a roguelike as well as having a vanilla copy where I play hardcore untwinked characters. Good video, will subscribe.

I actually just started playing hardcore in D2R and never did in the past. An interesting thing to note, for the first time (without mods) hardcore is actually a bit of a roguelike in the sense that you can carry over items you've accumulated to new characters via shared stash. While you may lose what you are currently wearing, you may have found and saved good gear for a different class along the way that can help make them stronger if your last character died, so in a way it is not a complete "waste" of time and you no longer lose everything upon death as you would have in the past without having a shared stash.
@seer6251
@seer6251 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I had the same thought. It's really interesting to have some gear ready for other characters in case you die, and it gives incentive to find more things to bolster your stash. Problem is using anything really good has that fear factor involved, so all my really good finds are collecting dust lol

Another benefit is that it forces players to come up with a different build in order to survive. In standard you can pretty much put all points into damage skills (sorceress), and even if you die you can corpsewalk back. In many cases, you don't even need the gear you died with in order to be a killing machine lol. With Hardcore though, you have to think about modifiers like Cannot Be Frozen, or max resistances 24/7, or less common choices like 20 points in Energy Shield/Telekinesis. The gameplay changes too, because you might willingly stay in a lower level area to kill enemies and level up, instead of proceeding to the Act boss (and dying because you didn't have enough of something, like poison resistance vs Andariel).

Fun fact: the map generation for some of the maps in D1 works a lot like a roguelike's with a few bells and whistles. Early in the generation procedure, the map is actually represented as a grid of ASCII characters, with '.' representing floor and '#' representing wall in true Rogue fashion.

One of my favorites is Stalker Anomaly on Ironman. After hours of feeling like a professional slav and surviving some really bad situations, upon leaving a comfy campfire I was instantly killed by an electric anomaly that I wasn't visually standing in.

@@seer6251 The STALKER series would probably be right up your alley. Anomaly's optional hardcore mode can be entertaining, although it has the same disadvantages where you might die in a split second to something you have no defense against (Chimeras). On the plus side, it's not always-online :)

i think the highest lvl hardcord char i made was like lvl 60-something. I died and never wanted to experience that pain again..so i didnt lol. My respect to those who put countless hours and have a true endgame hardcore character. The concentration and skill that requires doesnt go unappreciated by me.

I'm with you. I've been on the edge of quitting hardcore many times, but I just find my way back in somehow lol. It's like really good speedrun practice, since you keep playing the starting acts faster and faster. But yeah I'm not sure it's worth all the pain involved.

like as a guy who uses savescumming a lot historically especially in my childhood and also being terrible at games, being forced to really admit oh I should not have done that now I lost a whole day to that silly mistake. that really makes you get good. the shared stash in D2R kinda helps balance out the mopamine too. I never forget to visit it anymore either. Funny how fast you learn these best practices when not using them is HULKSMASH time.

This reminds me of playing Dungeon Crawl (DCSS). I've been playing it since 2008 or so, and I am still playing it regularly - without ever finishing a game. I just want to see how long I can go (how many Ziggs) and my brain never just allows me to leave with those 15 runes. And every time I lose I have to quit for a few months, blaming myself for those wasted hours, just to reluctantly get back into it again. Oops :)
