This was absolutely the case with the company I used to work for. The CEO has a lot of power. In a 50 person company he founded the company, and successfully ran the company for 40 years. He retired and chaos ensued. Bonus cuts, no raises, micromanagement, worse customer relationships. He carried the company and the void of power caused huge instability.
