I love Patagonia for this. I will always spend a bit more on a product of its ethical and or sustainable. Hearing them encourage people to consume less is impressive from a company that relys on consumers purchasing products to continue. Thank you so much for leading the efforts in reusing waste materials and upcycling discarded and waste materials into new products. At Patagonia shops, it would be great to see a section for used (but still good condition) Patagonia garments and bags to be bought (cheaply or for a discount coupon) and resold to other shoppers to be used longer once they are no use to one owner. Having this kind of extended use corner in addition to the recycled materials new product lines would be a win-win-win for consumers, company mission/branding/profits and the environment.

When I lived in Korea and Japan, recycling was mandated by law. We literally had a dozen different recycling pick-ups categorized by type of material like foam, plastic, glass, metal, etc. It blows my mind it is not standard or common practice here in the US.

I’ve been an avid Patagonia wearer for many years, and without fail your products have always been the highest quality, lasted the longest, and never gone in the waste bin or donation pile. Loved the realistic analysis of recycling and impacts. As an order of magnitude I remember having read that using recycled material shrinks the final impact of a garment by about half and not a ten factor. But does anyone has more sourced/precise figures around ? It matters to me as it is the effective way to show that recycling is better but nothing like a license to overbuy ! Lifelong clothes are the way to go, repairing also opens the way to customization which allows very nice improvements of garment performance and tuning. For instance, I often find myself cutting to add a zipper or lightening gears... Outdoor gears are functional and the irregular stitching or patches are truly "badges of honor" !

I'm really glad to see a company who actually cares about its products. Too bad most people buying Patagonia just for the brand aren't going to recycle these clothes back through your system. Some people will, but its not enough. Its sad to see all that work recycling is just going to end up in the landfill anyway. Personally I don't even buy these goods new (mainly because I can't afford them) I always buy almost all my clothing and some gear used. If I can make a recycled garment last even longer and then recycle it after I will. Please buy used and recycle it after as well.

To say consume less doesn’t help because the companies making the goods aren’t going to stop so either someone buys it and then it is trashed or it’s consumed and then it’s trashed. It starts with the companies making consumer goods especially for food products. They need to be using biodegradable packaging.

I absolutely love your mission statement, and how you are constantly searching for ways to improve your products life cycle. Keep innovating and other companies will continue to follow suit. I have one question though, which was posed in a class discussion about synthetic fibres. How will we as a whole address the issue of microplastics? I am familiar with the guppyfriend you guys released, and again I commend you for your innovation. But that seems to only be a bandaid solution to the problem. Seeing as once they're caught, they just end up in the garbage/recycling which then ends up in landfills and such. I am merely a design student in university, but our project this semester is to attempt to address this issue. If you have any hints of directions worth exploring it would be greatly appreciated. I have spent the better part of the last 20 years helping firms in China "do better". Over the last 5 years, that has brought a lot of projects focused on waste, and was catalyzed by my own curiosity to know where waste in Asia's cities went. Cities where recycling was informal in nature, but as we came to learn, very efficient. What we found with textiles was anything but efficiency and our work to help brands there has been slowed by a number of the issues that were mentioned here. If interested in knowing more about what is happening in China, where the vast majority of textiles are produced and where the highest volumes of waste are generated, I'd invite you to read the below posts that reflect the work my teams did in the field. @@madie1757 So, no, I don't think this kind of promotion promotes plastics, but I don't think it promotes full transparency either. Although, it does a better job than others who will actively sell something that isn't sustainable as something that is. I.e. Starbucks replacing straws with a lid that requires more plastic. Wider picture, if you read my posts, then you will see that my work revolves around telling the full story of these systems... and the truth is that we are recycling a small fraction of the plastic we have produced and that to do so is far more difficult than what experts preaching "circular economies" are telling you. HOWEVER, I have multiple products right now where brands that you know well are actively trying to design differently, use better materials, and close loops. Were there one thing I hope you, and others, would do, is just to keep educating yourself and keep asking brands hard questions.

This was good. Better may be around the corner -- promote and sponsor more atheletes of color (and in the admin of your company too). Also, show your gear (on those sponsored ones) being used over and over again. I have a couple of pieces that are over 20 years old. The image of duct taped and stitched clothing was very validating.

I absolutely love your products and it's a great way to explain what you do. I'm just asking myself some questions as I've been researching plastic pollution for more than two years now. 1. The examples you make are mostly for plastic bottles, which are widely recycled around the globe as PET can be turned into new products relatively easy. However there are many products like Multi-Layer Packaging (which is also used by Patagonia Provisions) where recycling is not possible - as you also mention on the website. What do you propose is the best way to treat that material? 2. You mention that incineration is worse than landfilling. Based on which information do you come to that conclusion? The University of Hawai'i recently issued a study that proved that plastic emits greenhouse gasses while it decomposes www.surfrider.org/coastal-blog/entry/new-study-shows-plastic-as-source-of-greenhouse-gases-potentially-contribut#:~:text=This%20month%2C%20a%20team%20of,that%20can%20exacerbate%20climate%20change. And not just CO2 but methane and ethane which are a lot worse for the climate than carbon. These gases are not produced during incineration. At the same time incineration wins back the energy from the calorific value of the waste. In certain industries like cement this plastic waste replaces fossil fuels like coal and gas and doesn't even leave ashes behind. I probably sound like I'm working for the waste incineration lobby - but the opposite is the case. To me Patagonia is a true role model when it comes to sustainability so I'd be more than curious to understand what you think about that. Isn't using plastic waste that can't be recycled and else would rot away on landfills/the environment better used as fuel in a process where we would else burn "virgin" fossil fuel?

I recycle everything I possibly can. It’s a little disheartening to hear only 15% of everything that gets recycled actually gets recycled. I’m still going to recycle. I believe it does make a difference in the long run. I’m very conscious about what I buy and if it can be recycled at the end of it.
