This is why when we deal with things like Fallujah in terms of door breaching and clearing. It would be really nice to have a heavy duty shield that is heavy enough to be moved in to absorb the bullets of any potential combatant inside. While it still is mobile enough to be used in that limited roll. Once you're done using it for the building. You can just strap it to the side of a Bradley or Humvee for ease of transport. It's save a lot of Marines lives but I can see where it'd be a little bit impractical as well. I just think a good old fashioned heavy piece of metal with a spalliner Could do wonders for taking those first couple of bullets.

My grandfather in WWII said room clearing was tossing in a grenade first and then spraying the room with automatic weapons fire. When I got to do force on force, it was doorways where things usually went south. First two guys got hit, blocked the doorway, the guys behind them hesitated long enough to pretty much turn the entry into chaos. We also find some interesting ways to defeat entry teams which I won't share here for OPSEC reasons. If you recall the Oakland incident, 1 perp killed 4 cops , including two SWAT team members with an SKS. The perp didn't respond in the fashion the team had trained for.

I'm a professional door kicker. I now help instruct tactical teams on room clearing and hallway movements. Trust me when I say thier is no perfect technique or tricks you can learn to prevent death or physical harm. This is why tactical teams wear heavy body armor and way many SWAT teams use a body bunker (shield). With constant practice and training all we can do is minimize our risk. Example wearing a bullet resistant vest increases your survival rate 40%. Pying from outside a doorway from one side of the door frame to the other side of the door frame decreases casualties 40%. The FBI reports that 40% of the time a perpetrator is usually hiding in one of far corners of the room waiting to ambush you. Get the picture? All you can do is increase your chances of survival. It's a numbers game.

Unless you have trained enough to be able to do it completely from muscle memory, please dont even attempt it. Thermals cannot see through glass, wood or metal, and it can be hard to distinguish obstacles if they are the same temp as the surroundings. Night vision gives an advantage in the dark, but you sacrifice your field of view and depth perception. Ashor Yakhnis limited penetration may be better for 1-2 person clearing and better target acquisition/more precise shots. Or if the squad is less experienced or unfamiliar with each other. Not recommended if the enemy has automatic weapons, explosives, or there are a lot of them. The best you can do is have a strong pointman that will make the decision of how far to go in, and everyone who follows keeps up and doesnt go past.

It is pathetic how many people think they are some sort of "John Wick" just because they own a pistol and an AR that they will MABEY shoot 1,000 rounds through ever. And not even while moving, not even while in shoot houses, not even under stress... Just flat range, shooting at targets and they think they are going to "clear a building"... It just makes me shake my head and laugh to the point where i can't even bother correcting them anymore because it happens just too often. People watch too many Hollywood movies, and think they could just roll on in and take over a building with their "tactics"... 95% of people who shoot do NOT have what it takes to even remotely even the odds.. And most of them would just get smoked, or become so scared in the moment they would just wait in their bedroom and call 911 anyways... Which is what i advocate... Unless you have children on the other end of the house to protect, then stay in your damn room and wait to ambush the intruder... Don't walk out and let him do the same to you just because you think you can... Stupid people man... Stupid people...

Doing a force on force exercise quickly shows how dangerous this is! Unless I have to save a family member, I will stay in the room (while very well armed and ready), call 911 and wait for the cavalry to arrive. *hopefully they are well trained* If I have to clear, my 2 dogs lead the way to warn me of the possible danger. Stacked Professionals with body armor and flash bangs or grenades is the only way to go. But even then, there's a good chance of casualties. Actually the tactics of old made a resurgence in Iraq. Instead if stacking up they reverted to the old bunker clearing methods of ww2. Secured the surroundings then entered. If it's a completely hostile landscape with no enemies there is no reason not to do this.
@WhoWouldWantThisName5 жыл бұрын
During WW2 it was very uncommon that there would be civilians present in an urban area during the fighting, and even farmers would leave upon the arrival of the danger. If they didn't leave on their own they were sometimes ran out by the troops, for their safety. Of course these weren't combatants disguising themselves as civvies and attempting to blend in with the town folk. It was a very different mentality at the time. They were soldiers proudly wearing a uniform with a conscious that would want to avoid getting civilians killed, even on the other side. When the enemy was headed for a town they would clear out the civilians ahead of time and take up defensive positions as well as perhaps set up ambushes up the road. These days it would appear most of these low life's couldn't care less about the lives of innocents around them and won't hesitate to hide among them.

In the absence of hostages the way our military clears rooms is stupid. It risks our shooters unnecessarily, if you you do not have offensive (Low Frag) grenades and will not give your soldiers the option to frag and clear from the outset you shouldn't be in that country in the first place. Like most everywhere we have been for the last 16+ years. Civilians and cops are an entirely different and separate issue, i'd err on the side of keeping cops as hamstrung and disarmed as possible given their eagerness to use violence and tendency to use a SWAT teams to brake up poker games, child support warrants, or any time someone calls the cops on their neighbor because he is growing marijuana in his garden.

John, well done, and point made… Just remember to mention that “Context is King”. Firstly, asking the question: why are you clearing this room/structure in the first place? If it is a hostage rescue or personnel recovery operation, then a team is appropriate and speed is security. You need to get as many gun barrels in that room as fast as possible regardless of the threat to the assault force to save the PC. If it is a clearance operation or straight raid, you can (and should) take your time, pie off corners, play the angles, and protect the Assault Force as much as possible. Murphy’s Law: it could always be a dry hole, or the wrong target building; causing a subsequent protracted gunfight, so keep shooters in the game. Context is King!
@jasonhenson37613 жыл бұрын
I think the title is very misleading, room clearing is never a bad idea, it’s always a requirement. If you are required to ensure a building or room is clear, you HAVE to clear it.

@@jasonhenson3761 The most important principle of patrolling.... COMMON SENSE! I hate the click bait, but I can't help myself... John and I went Basic Training together. We had a mutual friend (Kevin) who was my bunkmate, and passed away a while back. Then we served together in Regiment around the same time; truly six degrees of separation... Win, lose, or draw he hasn't changed... He usually said off the wall stuff, that would make you think, but then common sense would step back into the room. Kind of like his video about suppressors in home defense (Oh My God...). So every now and again, I send these little reminders, maybe he reads it, maybe not... Listen, "the job" isn't rock science. It is challenging, but fairly straight forward. You either know where the bad guys are, so you conduct a Raid or an Ambush. If you don't know where the enemy is, you need to find them, by way of a recon or a movement to contact (make the enemy shoot at you). Otherwise, everything else comes back to the Fundamentals of Soldiering: Physical Fitness, Land Navigation, Basic Marksmanship with Pistols and Rifles (Long/ Short), Small Unit Tactics, and Medical. Your proficiency to conduct the micro level tasks, translates to the macro level tasks. K.I.S.S

This makes sense. I’ve done a lot of room clearing exercises and always thought the way we did things were a little bogus for certain situations. The fact I was trained constantly to be ready to pull or push the point man out of a doorway makes sense in theory but why is he getting shot in the first place unless you’re just trying to rush the people? It’s not always ideal, but may be the only option for saying something like you have to move really fast without any time to spare type situations. But that’s far and few between. We have time to think things through. Also less is more when it comes to the amount of guys stacked up on a doorway.
