I have to disagree. India has not had the kind of religion-driven pandemic-denialism that the US has. People don't put religion ahead of pandemic safety measures because they feel their gods will protect them. It comes more out of a nonchalance towards health care, which is driven by poverty, by setting people die inspite of being treated by doctors. It's just built into our culture. People will work even if they're unwell because they can't afford to lose a day's wage.

In fact given the many progress and developments achieved under the CCP government, the China of today can be seen and said to be much better run than most countries in the world. Only those outsiders who have been to China and work there or stay there will know what I am talking about. This is absolutely true I am from Gujarat , INDIA My grandfather died due to corona...he was tested positive and was hospitalized However, the reason for death mentioned on death certificate is hypertension. Our chief minister Vijay Rupani once said in public that "if any person have high diabetes and then if he dies due to COVID-19 than the reason for his/her death is not covid, he died because he had less resistant power because of his diabetes. Our government is lier Only way to get real numbers would be...if we compare the death rate despite of the reason for death....to the last 5 years data...only then a true number can be found

As per my knowledge in India more than 2 crore people have died from COVID in second wave, the official numbers are highly under reported because of State / Central Goverment. On a personal level I know of many people who have lost a relative or two in second wave. One such example is one of my friends father was admitted in hospital that day 40 people died due to covid but hospital showed only 4 so you can imagine the real numbers across the country. All these politicians be it from BJP, Congress, AAP or TMC they all are like 'ek hi thaali ke chatte batte' all they care about is for votes not the general public. You know supreme court ordered Government to provide Rs. 4 lakh each to families who have lost loved ones in second wave, but Central Government refused because by this way the real number of covid will be revealed and his not so holy image will get tarnished.

If it is anything like my place, this hesitancy to go to the hospital is because 1) If you have any symptoms that might indicate you have covid, they will isolate you even if you tested negative. 2) If you die from Covid or have symptoms that might suggest you have covid, refer point 1, you will be marked as a Covid death. And government servants, for the funeral, demanded a significant amount of money to the family. Previously, when the money for funerals usually comes from donations in the community. 3. Those with chronic illness or old people are scared of dying alone in a hospital before even seeing their loved ones. 4. You have to provide a negative certificate to go for a check-up.
