There are 13 things you need to know before buying the Ryobi track saw. I bought the track saw for ONE reason and was massively disappointed by it. I also found nine things wrong with Ryobi's track saw. To be fair, I also found three things I like. Will people care about the ten things I found that are wrong with it? Is Ryobi a genius despite my opinion? You tell me!

I've found that Ryobi consistently delivers well above it's price point while many other brands come up short for what you pay. I have consistently been surprised by their power and durability. I do some fairly heavy duty stuff, and I have yet to have one tool fail on me.

I think it's more of a tool by tool judgement for me. I've been really happy with some of their stuff, and gotten total garbage from them also. They often drop the ball on some very basic features, like the tools are being designed by people who never used that tool before. I have had several tools fail on me or out right break, so consider yourself lucky. I do like that I can get 3 tools for the price of one DeWalt or Milwaukee, which is a huge selling point for weekend warrior/ DIYer like myself.

Ryobi is a rarity in modern businesses: a a fairly long running company that's offered reliable, long lasting power tools at an affordable price for the semi pro community. They've kept their designs simple and focused on function. I'm a DeWalt man myself, though I do prefer certain tools be other brands; Ryobi included.

I'm a DeWalt guy as well but some of those Ryobi tools are pretty good. The Ryobi lawn mower and blower are actually better than the DeWalt. I've also used someone else's Ryobi table saw years ago and that thing was surprisingly good. Not as good as my trusty old dw744, but still pretty good for a cheap saw.

@@actionjksn I'm a pro and I use Ryobi cordless tools. Won't touch their bits or hand tools and if it plugs in then I won't go with Ryobi, but when the 18v tools made the switch from NiCad to lithium batteries, every other tool brand changed the design. All tools used to take Ryobi type post batteries. But when lithium was introduced they went to the slide on pack making my dewalts useless without the big clunky adapter. Ryobi kept the battery design and so I bought their starter set. Been adding their tools to my collection every since with the confidence that they won't become obsolete in 6 months like my dewalts did. And I've come to learn that Ryobi 18v tools are just as good as any other brand. Not in every tool, but no one brand can claim their tool is the best in every category.
@actionjksn

@@epstein_isnt_dead7726 I tried the clunky adapter and it is a piece of crap, not even really usable it won't handle any load. I fried mine pretty quickly. DeWalt is sticking with this battery design for a long time so I'm okay with it. It's also a much better design. Most of my stuff was pretty worn out anyway. My 60 volt saw is good enough that I removed my corded saw from my truck. My dw744 table saw is over 20 years old and still working. Most other tools cannot last that long. I'm not saying I haven't had to do anything to it but it still has most of the original motor. It is still very accurate as well and very easy to calibrate.

Nah most places do not take notes. There are forums and reddit post talking about tools that they would like to get that other brands have yet the brand still do not deliver. I just did a lengthy review for a company with a product and went in to detail about what they needed to fix nearly 2 months ago. I gave them some input on a few very simple software patches and modifications they could do in a few hours and then spend a few days testing. Yet they still have not done anything. Its sad that companies we would think would fix or do things right yet they wont. Wen track saw is still the better buy or just get something better than the ryobi. While I do like the brand there are just a few things I can not see buying.

I got one of these on Black Friday. I don't mind the split track so much because I usually buy quarter sheets of plywood at most and work in a small garage, so the shorter track is a plus for me. I was also able to use a universal hose adapter and clamp to fit it to my Ridgid shop vac. The worst part is definitely the tracks not being compatible with other tracks or brands and therefore most of the independently-made jigs and attachments are unusable.

I became a Ryobi fan may years ago after my one year old Milwaukee drill bit the dust. I replaced it with a drill, charger and two batteries for the cost of a single M battery. Today I have so many Ryobi tools I've lost count. Still have some blue ones that still work. For corded tools though I tend to go with the best I can afford. Not sure if I'll go with this tack saw or not, but thanks for the detailed review.

I have a lot of Ryobi tools because I dont need these things for my income, i use them for projects around the house and garden, the fact i can throw a mitre saw, shop vac, circular saw, router, lawnmower, radio etc in the car and have them run off the same battery platform is great, and the HP range really is a step up in performance, i love them, but if I paid a tradie to come and do a job and they had a van full of Ryobi id be worried.

My shop is all Ryobi 18V. I have too many of their tools to mention. As a hobby woodworker (generally, I build small projects to give away and furniture for the house, cabinets, etc.), I am very satisfied with their products. I won't be getting their track saw since it's something I would rarely use, but the batteries are pretty amazing. One thing not mentioned is that if you buy an 18V tool from 8 years ago, this battery will still work. The battery interface hasn't changed in years. Hell, I have a couple of blue tools that run the 18V batteries. I've also since switched to their 40V lawn equipment line. Pretty solid stuff for stuff made out of plastic. HAHA.

Exactly why I avoided Ryobi and their 'track saw'. I ended up with a Wen and it's fantastic (for the price). Here is what I can tell everyone who wants a track saw. The tracks are ALL issue prone (looking at you Festool too, powertec, makita....they are all the same!!). I'm a person of precision, and if you are too you will find out quickly that the two tracks put together won't be straight. I have an 8 foot aluminum level. I simply put it on it's side and put the tracks up to it and adjust the screws and insert until my feeler gauge .003 won't slip through. You may think this isn't important but it is and I'll tell you why! Imagine, you are off by 1/32 of an inch on a 10 foot board. That run out will turn into a 1/16, even an 8th. Compound this when you have multiple boards and you start to see the issue. 55" is a stupid length as well. Why? I hate the track sections if you need to clamp them. You can only clamp the ends - so if your track is 110" like mine (2 pieces) and you have a 96" cut to make, the clamps won't reach leaving you either to A) use double sided tape (now you have to do the ENTIRE track and risk being off square 90) B) Use the track freehand and hope it doesn't move C) clamp a piece of wood to one side and beginning and end and hope it doesn't move D) Any other number of stupid solutions that all are terrible. What I *REALLY* want is a 9 foot ONE PIECE track saw track. If you made it this far and ask why? I'll tell you why. Here is the issue with track saws when you want to make a cut. First, you need enough track in BACK of the saw to back up enough so when you plunge down you go through your wood. Otherwise you have to come back with a Japanese flush cut saw to cut the ends off. You can't have too little or too much track hanging off either because the weight of the saw will cause your blade to not be 90 or whatever angle you are after. I only use mine on table top ends and or glue joints if it's too much to put on a table saw. I think anyone who thinks they want a track saw, should research them and find they are nice to have and once you use one once you'll see why. However, do yourself a favor and buy some machinist squares in different sizes so you can calibrate the saw and get a 90 or 45 (or whatever angle you need). Track saws are a nice tool, just know what you are getting into with them and you will find that all the above, if you pay attention will hold true. If it doesn't, I don't care but don't say I didn't warn you haha.

For entry level track saws for breaking down mostly sheet goods, the best solution I've found is the Masterforce 2410706 (in-house Menards brand). It's also a split track, but is an all-in-one corded kit that gets you 4 pieces of track and a decently-accurate 6-1/2" plunge saw with a bag for both. If you can order one to your house (for those far from the midwest) they've been $199 for a little over a year, down to $177 with the 11% rebate they regularly have going. $200 for a track saw to break down 8' plywood sheets? I'm sold. Even if it weren't accurate, it would be worth it for most people to get rough cuts for breaking down materials, but I've used mine quite a bit over the past 6 months and have almost no real complaints considering the price and local availability (for me). Throw in a Diablo blade, do a few minutes of setup, and get some long, straight cuts right away.

Key thing to consider is not to tie yourself into any one platform due to its proprietary battery. That's what battery adapters are for... to allow you to swap a single ecosystem battery on to many different platforms. That said Ryobi tools are great but Ryobi batteries are the worst form factor of any proprietary battery platform. One of the very best battery platforms out there is the DeWalt flexvolt. It allows you to run any 20 volt or 60 volt platform and there are adapters for almost every tool out there including Ryobi 20 volt tools. I use adapters to run milwaukee, ryobi, Makita, and Harbor Freight brands. All of these Brands end up running just a slight bit stronger and faster on the DeWalt flexvolt and I have never had any problems with any tools. (In one case.. w a ryobi sawsall i ran it so hard and so long on a flexvolt that the wires fused and opened the circuit of the adapter (i had to rewire w heavier Guage wire... the sawsall was fine).

I don't cut a ton of sheet goods and I'm pretty good at getting straight cuts with a circular saw and clamps and I have a decent table saw. But I am planning to get a track saw because I'm tired of dealing with the hassle, and because the prices have gotten better. I actually would have been open to a corded version of this, just to get started. I could live with all the plastic, even the plastic shoe. I could live with the janky dust collection, and the stupid riving knife. What makes it a non-starter for me is the proprietary track. I'm on the DeWalt battery system both 20 volt and 60 volt. So for cordless I'm probably going to go with that. What I would like to know is, how bad is it compared to something like Makita or some of the other good brands? Also if I get the DeWalt saw, what track should I get for it? I would like something that is inexpensive but still pretty good. How does the DeWalt track stack up compared to some of the other brands? I'm not really planning on getting festool brand just because of the price, and I don't really need the best, and I know there are some other really good ones for less money. One thing I do like about the DeWalt track is the double splinter guard. I was thinking I would devote one side to 90° cuts and the other one to 45° cuts. I'm guessing if you set it for 45°, it's going to mess up your clearance on your splinter guard.

Long before Track Saws existed, I used a 48" straight edge and a couple c-clamps to hold the straight edge and the wood being cut so I could make my cut. Cutting an 8' long sheet of plywood was the worst to down straight. I usually just made a pencil line, and did my best.

I guess maybe I give myself away as being too old, set in my ways, but it seems redundant to have a rail and a circular saw and then go out and buy a separate track saw. Yes, perhaps if you're mass producing cabinets, but then you're not using batteries, and a table saw is the better fit, complete with set stops. The precision of the plunge cut is convenient, but hardly wort the extra money and space it takes. That being said, I love ryobi for the battery platform and hundreds of different tools it fits, cutting grass, spraying fruit trees, and bring the battery in and put it on a miter saw. And I am a pro and used ryobi tools when they were blue, and still have blue tools that don't miss a beat. The only small gripe I have is they seem to be a little bulkier than dewalt, but I think they actually last longer on their batteries, and beat dewalt all to heck on the price, so I'll stick with Ryobi.

@@wittworks lol people will steal anything, but a contractor can stomach losing a $400 saw way more tha a $1000 saw. Also, as with other Ryobi tools, I bet it can take a beating

I actually honestly have a question, at least for me I have been able to find the ryobi saw for 300$, But the makita saw I have only seen for like 600ish which is double the price and at that point why not just bump up to the festool? I previously had makita everything, like thousands and thousands but they all got stolen so I have been slowly getting new tools back and have actually been pretty impressed with ryobi. But great review man

I bought my makita with a track for under $400 a few years ago. I’d like a festool, but many have said the makita is 99% as good for much less. But I haven’t used a festool.

@@wittworks The local home depots have stopped carrying all but the most basic Makita stuff where I live which could be why because I've been looking to getting one recently and I just saw the saw itself for 430$ and the track for like another 90-100$ But if it is available at other places for about 400$ all together I can see what you mean expecially if you already have other Makita tools. I need to get one for a cabinet/ countertop project im doing to help my parents out and then work down the line, I actually also considered just using a 7 1/4 skillsaw and guide rail and just making the cuts that way which has worked fine before but with some of the more specialized cuts it definitely would be nice to use an actual track saw. I've used a festool tracksaw on a really expensive work project before that the company got and I loved that thing but if the Makita is close ill maybe look into that if they are that similar. Though the ryobi would probably be able to suit my needs my only real concern is the beveled cut thickness.

1) you can watch Amazon for returned makitas that are cheaper 2) wen may be a good option. Cheap ($97) and uses makita/Festool rails. I just bought another wen to do a video on. (First two I got were from a bad batch)

You can buy a Kreg track and sled system for, $100 at Home Depot and turn any circular saw into a virtual track saw.

Yes you can. And you can also return it when you learn it’s total trash 🤪. I’ve not met one person who has bought the accu rip (and wasn’t paid to promote it) who liked it. Most throw it away.

The problem with all the tools is that none of the batteries can be used crops brands. I don’t want to buy multiple brands batteries. So one really needs to choose the brand ryobi, Milwaukee, dewalt, etc… I have ryobi. So I won’t use another brands tool, cause I don’t want to buy batteries that won’t work on every tool I have. So now I am stuck with ryobi. Also I am only using my tools at home. I’m not a proffessional

@@wittworks I agree very frustrating. Because everyone also has tools that the other does not have and I want or need. So no matter what Brand of tools you choose. It will always be a catch 22.

If something do have 10 things I hate I will never buy that. I use Ryobi, but not only Ryobi for that reason - I picked “best ones from”. A few days ago when I noticed Ryobi batteries are more expansive as ones from DW. Maybe no more Ryobi in my shop..

I’m not sure your cost comparisons make sense. I’ve been looking for a cordless track saw for some time, to replace my older very basic Grizzly track saw, so I’ve been tracking prices for about a year. The Makita, with battery, charger, and track is close to $600. That’s not “a few dollars more”. The Kreg at $299 is neither cordless or includes a track. What am I missing here? Is that a fair comparison?
@wittworks
@wittworks Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely the cheapest cordless. For a little more you can get a corded with much better quality. That’s assuming cordless is a convenience, and not a necessity.
@BillMacfarlane
@BillMacfarlane Жыл бұрын
@@wittworks ah, ok. Thank you for the clarification! In my scenario, yes, cordless is the primary criteria. I’m no cabinet maker, so the performance of my older corded track saw has been acceptable. But I do take it to different properties for projects, and the convenience of cordless is the main reason I’m looking at buying a new one. I also use a cordless vac, and it’s my understanding that the Ryobi dust port works with the common Ridgid hoses. Do you have any insight into this?

I don't get how they make this saw without a 100 inch track. I think a track saw that can't rip standard sheet goods is useless. I'm still using tracks that I bought years ago that came with a base to attach to a standard circular saw. I can't find that unit for sale anymore but the one I have is still working fine. ( I have a dedicated saw I just leave on the base and use exclusively with the tracks) If I remember right I only paid about 100 bucks for that set up as well. Absolutely a no for me with a 55 inch track.
