I’m glad you pointed it out because for as good as Stricklands defense is it has one major weakness; it’s so involved he is physically incapable of counter striking a lot of the time. You will see Strickland lean back or to the side of punches with his whole body while using both his arms to block and parry which works he avoids the strikes but it takes him so far out of position he can’t capitalize on his opponent being out of position. Compare this to ilia topuria another elite fighter with a boxing heavy style and great defense; ilia constantly has his base under him and uses minuscule adjustments to defend himself so he can stay in range for a quick counter if the opportunity presents itself. Strickland never counters he always defends resets THEN fires back. In fights where someone can keep up with his cardio they can just keep throwing the whole fight and automatically win because Strickland is so busy defending he doesn’t have the opportunity to get his own offense off. This is how he lost to cannonier and ddp the first time and based on the Paulo costa performance he will probably lose the same way again. I think something that would do a lot to help Strickland style is if he developed a nasty clinch game with lots of knees to the body and elbows because he’s got the frame for it and it would be a deterrent to stop people from wanting to crash into him all the time.

I think Sean is similar to Jiri in that he really benefits from having a very unique style that is hard to prepare for in training. This makes him a hard puzzle to solve on the fly in an initial encounter. But like Jiri, I think that strangeness factor will diminish and he’ll be easier to figure out in the 2nd fight

Apprently he has good ground and pound and is good at reversing positions according to his coach. Obviously training is different then a real fight but if he can punish DDP for taking him down especialy early he can probably win the striking as long as he doesnt get KOed. More importantly though he needs to have some more offense and prove why he is winning rounds. The reason he gets "robbed" so many times is because he fights to barely win.

You can beat the Philly shell with faint jabs, leg kicks, and then circle out (to the right). You can hit the Muay Thai hip sweep, or scare Strickland off with spinning back kicks up high. You can easily steal the round. If Strickland gets frustrated and try to chase you get, you hit the 1-2. Izzy did it wrong using kicks with the led left leg, it's weird how a guy his level didn't execute it back then. Izzy threw everything up high where the right hand is blocking, punches, kicks everything landed on the glove.
