I usually don't comment but this was one of the most honest, raw, and vulnerable interviews I've seen around moving to VN and trying to build a life. Thank you to Amanda & Peter for allowing us to listen in. As a Viet Kieu who has been traveling to vietnam a couple times recently to figure out if I could live part or full time there, this conversation resonated deeply with a lot of the underlying struggles Amanda shared. Esp as someone who doesn't speak vietnamese all too well. I read that among the most important key factors to living a happy life, community is among the top pillars. It sounds like part of the real struggle here is Amanda left her community of friends and family, and hasn't found her tribe in VN yet. I hope she does if she decides to stay and i also hope she can find work that truly inspires her in some way. Wishing you both so much luck and opportunity. There're different opportunities for overseas Vietnamese to survive and thrive in Vietnam. Some like Julia and Kavi build their own businesses, and some like Amanda are just behind the scenes helping their husbands run a business. If you listen carefully, she said she could not speak Vietnamese well, so it's hard for her to make friends with the people over there.

14:08 “trying to make more friends” I have been in Asia for years now and as a Westerner I don’t think is possible to have the same type of friendship one has in the West with people. Asia is just too different and the culture is too different as well. Same goes for marriage, the expectation of Asian women when marrying a foreigner is for him to lift her family out of poverty and you hear and see all these Asia meets West love stories that end in disaster. As a man I ask: do u actually need friends? Do you actually need love? As a man I choose respect and success over friendship and/or love. She does seem to be struggling a lot in Vietnam and she ain’t happy. She is doing it more for her husband who stumble upon business opportunities and that it’s great and noble from her side. I hope her husnabd is aware of her effort and doesn’t take her for granted and if he finds financial success and then he in return must provide a good life for her. For people from the USA life outside the USA is not easy. The culture the way of life and their overall society in the USA is truly different from Vietnam and or other countries. I was also in Southern Cali and I am happy I am out and never to come back. Good luck to her and u wish her a happy marriage.

I think she feels she has zero in common wit the locals. I am a Westerner and I have been in South East Asia for many years. I can’t live in the West. But I have also accepted that friendships and most important of all “relationships” are too different in Asia compared to the West. I am ok with that now…. But Amanda is clearly struggling like most people would.

Thanks for posting this video. I can relate to Amanda. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am Filipino American who is married to a Vietnamese wife who lives in Phan Thiet. I often think about pulling the trigger on moving from SF to Saigon or Phan Thiet. And then I think about what would it feel like to move to Vietnam including the lifestyle. I recently transplanted to OC. In my bubble many Californians haven't ever left CA because they are so comfortable here. I came from a major metro area that had lots of people moving elsewhere to experience life away from home. It's an interesting contrast. One thing about that comfort could be that it can be difficult to leave it behind for some people.

Moving, especially to another country, can be extremely hard when you moved from a place you felt that is your home. I think people who work out in other countries or places can cut ties easier for whatever reason. I think most people can easily feel like she does even being single. Even being married, if one partner seems to be thriving and the other feels left out, it can be mentally straining and self doubt can alter reality. But thank you Peter for showing this side of human emotion and experience and I wish them the best, and you too of course!

Many years ago I remember a set of big "picture books" at a mall. When opening the book all one could see were dots of all colors. If one stared into the dots just the right way a beautiful 3D image appeared. Once you saw it you always saw it. But some people could never see it. Vietnam is a bit like that. Many come and see chaos. But looking at it the right way you see a country of interesting beautiful people full of culture with awesome sense of humor. There is no right or wrong about seeing the beauty or not. I am from NYC living here in Vietnam 30 years. I really love being here never bored even at 70 years of age. The lady being interviewed is a delightful person but is struggling to find herself here. The question now is whether she can come to see the beautiful image or learn to cope otherwise assuming the husband is not ready to return to the US. Assuming she still wants to stay with her husband then my suggestion is to keep trying to see the beautiful side of the image of Vietnam. In addition... her husband needs to heed her own needs and ensure that she has the ability to travel back to California at reasonable intervals preferably with a home base or apartment of their own there.

She is in a difficult position mentally. Her personality is OK, she was raised in Cali - she is raw and honest though, which is not a usual trait there. This woman has a soul. She will be happier in 10 years, when she realizes less control will make her happier. If her partner is the ONE, she will calm down eventually. If he is not the ONE, Yeah, just forget it… I have the experience that TO GIVE support and love to the other one, that is the most we can do for each other. People are fd up because they think a certain income / house/ car will make them happy. That is true when you do not have the basics. You can’t fill the void (speaking of your soul) with material things. The wealthiest people I knew were some of the most fd up people. Making money - keepingBUSY is many times basically running away from trauma. I hope this couple will find their “ShangriLa” together.

According to her statement... I was unhappy and when I was offered to travel the world from a man that she only knew for a short time during covid shutdown. Their story is similar to a Canadian YT couple. The guy is white, girl is half-Filipina/ white. They dated for a short while in Canada. Covid happened & girl moved in with the guy. They got married. Then around a year after, they quit their jobs to travel (and became vloggers). They decided to stay in PH 🇵🇭 when PH finally opened to tourism/ foreigners. They travelled around & vlogged, then settled in one area/ city. The girl was ~20 yrs younger than the guy. They had different interests. Ending: they are now in the process of divorce. (needs 1 year of separation before filing, accdg to Canadian law or so they said). They now live separately & have separate vlogs. Guy has found another GF, also 20 yrs younger. Girl has found a Filipino BF, close to her age & who has similar interests. They (Canadian ex-couple) still both live in PH. That said, I wish all the best to Amanda and her husband, both individually and as a couple.

I think Amanda should join some womans club in Vietnam to feel more apart of it. This can be in something she would like to do like life coaching. There are many clubs in Vietnam where you can find like minded people. Vietnam forces you to face your demons but in this way also helps you grow and discover yourself. There are many challenges I overcame in myself in Vietnam simply due to necessity and not being in a all supportive environment.

Checked out the cost of hotels in Toronto last year and it was over 300 a night for a Holiday Inn Express . It is actually a privilege, challenge, and adventure to be able travel, explore, discover, live/work in other countries, and to learn. Was discussing this with a friend from Asia who was invited to the USA for work, barely spoke English, but was successful at his job and eventually obtained another univ degree, then started his own firm. 15 years later returned to Asia because of the opportunities. The USA was very tough, but it would have been impossible to have succeeded without a positive attitude along with an ambition to learn and develop community/friendships. Language can be learned if someone chooses to...it does not have to be a race...relax... Can actually communicate without understanding a language .. Interestingly, when someone returns "home" they might actually feel like a stranger in a strange land... Do not be an expat on Holiday!

18:00 That’s the challenge with western mentality. She has been taught to work and be independent while being a wife. Asian women get married and follow their husband to other countries. Many Viet Kieus go to Vietnam to meet girls, it’s an open secret and everybody knows that. These Viet Kieus meet girls and many times they take them back to USA, Canada or Australia. These Asian women follow and you can see the difference in the thinking with Amanda. I can say that many Vietnamese girls would like to be in her position and let the man take care of all financial things but of course is a different mentality. It’s clear to the naked eye she is struggling. I hope things improve.

13:40 I seriously don’t understand what’s the issue with learning the language of your ancestors. In LA I met quite a number of Koreans that didn’t even wanted to tell me their Korean name. They would say I am American and I only speak English and of course that didn’t even want to be heard speaking Korean. I really couldn’t understand why… I speak the language of my ancestors and English too and I’ve learn a bit of other languages too. Seriously what’s the problem with learning the language of your family? I don’t understand why Asian Americans are so reluctant. The challenge with Vietnamese language is that just like Chinese and Thai and many other Asian languages it’s a “tonal” language and pronunciation is so difficult. There are some Westerners that can master Chinese and there is an American guy in Vietnam Phuc Map who can speak Vietnamese fluently and that is a true achievement. Tonal languages are to me the hardest to learn and yes learning a language is useful. If she can get the tones right then that is already more than 90% of the battle won.

There are a lot of Asian Americans/ Asian Europeans who have "self hate". It's usually among the 1st generation/ children of immigrants. They try to shed their Asian-ness and be more white. Peter (the interviewer) also experienced this, as he's said in his other vids. He's said that when he was younger, he didn't want to speak Viet outside of his home, not wanting to bring Asian smelly food for lunch, etc. Some other common things among men - becoming more gangsta. Among women, it's blonde hair, eyelid surgery, nose lift or boob job, etc. The series "Fresh off the boat" delves into this. The channel of Fung Bros also talk about self hate, aside from other issues.

There is no equal partnership in a marriage in the literal way. Not financially, not in the sense of physical power, not in the sense of mental power, etc. one is always stronger somehow than the other. The thing that keeps it together is that BOTH believe their life would be worse without the other one AND they are generally happier together than alone. Briefly.

It is my personal opinion that Viet Kieu should not move back to Viet Nam permanently unless s/he had financially made it in foreign lands and willing to bring resources and new ideas into Viet Nam, contributing to its growth. Otherwise, you're a failure in foreign lands and now coming back to Viet Nam just to leech off of it.

2:56 Chinese have communities in every country in South East Asia and now the world. In Asia in particular they are the business elite and although they are the minority in numbers they usually control the biggest part of the economy. In Vietnam the also had the biggest control of the economy. I just löve these “klickz” of people who unite, seize the whole economy and make everybody work for them for peanuts.
