You can't just change a color palette of a character just out of nowhere. Without any reason. Kazuha's red pallette symbolizes fall and maple leaf which correlate to leaf falling in the wind. Yun Jin's color palette is ok but she looks more cryo than Geo because of the weird fluffy pompoms on her head piece. If they made those look like crystal then it would've been perfect. Color palette can tell a story of your character with out explaining them. So it's imperative for a "good" character design to have a color palette that fits in with the characters personality and background. You can make a cryo dark/black because black Ice exist. You can make a hydro green because toxic water exist. You can make anemo red as long as you make sure people can tell they're anemo. Not just "oh I'm bored I want to make this ice yellow" then they just ended up looking like a gem.

Something I noticed in Genshin's character design is that usually their appearence is complemented by their playstyle and animations. And if you have seen Heizou's spoilers you'd notice he's not just a detective, his martial arts also define him. Anemo suits him perfectly, regardless of color palette.

I never thought Heizou had bad design. It's different, sure, but it's not like every other character uses a colour palette based on their element (just in Anemo, there's Kazuha who doesn't have one bit of green). Actually, I prefer it when the palette isn't just one colour with variations plus black/white, which most characters tend to use. In his case, there are touches of red at the bottom to complement the golden pants, and touches of gold at the top to complement the red hair. If anything, it's the white shirt that puts me off a bit. I wouldn't call his design great, but for a 4* it's definitely good enough. And, as you said, it suits his character -but I think Mihoyo usually does a good job on this point.

Yeah his design is pretty nice, i agree with you its nice, the difference is refreshing, but the white is the main issue- we have characters like fischl and beidou and xinyan whos colours are darker, and heizou does have a darker palette for the most part and the fact that the shirt is white wi5 no other prominent pieces to compliment it make it look strange! His designer possibly tried to create a balance between dark and bright but unlike fischl beidou and xinyan it didnt tie in well? Does that make sense? Overall i havent been too much of a fan of too many Inazumans’ outfits.. they all seem undercooked, you know! Like the design process was a bit rushed so they have the STARTINGS of being really cool but cant fully be realized, but yeah for a 4 star its good enough

I'm a pretty big fan of the latest designs. They've had more interesting color palletes - grey and red and purple w/ Itto, the pink on Ayaka's, etc. I love Keqing but she looks like she belongs in a crayon box. tbh the only inazuma design I have any big criticisms of is Sayu's, which doesn't really convey her character or profession really well, outside of the hood and face.

So, in short Heizou's design is actually all fine, on par with other characters, and fulfills its purpose. But since it's not what people expected, most likely due to unhealthy expectations created by the interpretation of one fan artist, they are trying to find excuses to justify their frustration, using arguments that don't hold themselves.

While I agree the characters don't HAVE to use the color of their element, I do think there should be a noticeable connection between the character color (if too distinct from the vision color) and the element wich their powers come from. As an example: Kazuha's clothes are all red, but it's full of maple leaves and fully autumn themed, so even if it's not green, it still reminds us of wind. Imagine a Dendro character full of colorfull flowers or mushrooms on their design. It doesn't need to have green to reminds us of dendro, but it needs plants to reminds us of... plants.

i have a hypothesis as to why (or really its just my unwarranted opinion lol). in ganyu's case, while her outfit is absolutely gorgeous, i admit the bodysuit doesn't really match her timid, reserved personality. who knows, red could have a completely different reason for not liking it. as for ayato, my opinion is related to ashikai's "will signora be playable" video where they mention playable characters having an appealing view from the back. as much as i love ayato, his backside is really lackluster to stare at while you play him

When I first saw his design I felt like there was just something missing from it. I assumed it was the color palette, but whenever I looked at fanmade color palette edits for Heizou, those didn’t feel right either. Now I’ve gotten used to it, and seeing the uncropped version helped a lot with the colors. I like his design!

I think people got hyped with fan concepts and ended up disappointing with the official design. Same thing happened with Ayato, people thought he would be a male ayaka. Personally I like it but not as much as other characters and I like almost every character. The only ones that I'm not a fan of are probably Shenhe (I prefered the blue she had on her pants when her design was leaked), Ganyu (dislike how her top feels incomplete) and definitely Yanfei. I really like her personality but her outfit is just meh. I feel the same way people feel about Heizou not looking more like a detective, in this case with Yanfei not looking much like an actual lawyer and more like a volleyball player.

Personally, I really liked heizou's design even if his colors were off putting at first. I couldn't quite pin point what it was until I saw an edit on twitter of heizou with just slightly darker skin and his headband recolored to match his outfit than blending in with his dark hair streak. Seeing the edit opened my eyes, because what heizou's design lacked was a certain cohesiveness, that could've looked perfectly good if hoyo wasn't afraid of giving their characters a little melanin rather than being paper white all the time. Also, heizou's headband would have looked a lot better if it didn't just blend into his hair streak, because it barely feels visible and it also makes his streak look oddly placed - I had to take a double take to realize there was a headband there even

I understand the complains but I love his style, the shorts are to give him higher mobility as he is a fighter and has the spin and reverse kicks. I also like the color palette and he being a catalyst user that doesn't carry it when fighting works well. Excited for the update coming up as it will let me save primogems to see how many constellations I can get for him.

Another thing is that his shirt resembles Sara's upper body a bit. A tight black shirt at the bottom and some loose white clothing on top, the difference is that in Sara's case the black part is the prominent one, meanwhile in Heizou's case it is barely noticeable. So we can say that he at least looks like someone from the Tenryou comission

agreed! and somehow, ganyu, shenhe, sara and to a lesser extent yelan and eula all feel like reused designs, where they prioritized fanservice over making them feel unique and synchronous with the character. they aren’t all that similar when looking at details, but they feel like the exact same style, if that makes sense, with lots of shared qualities and design choices. like if i changed colors a bit, any of them could swap outfits and look essentially the same. even with yae miko and rosaria, rosaria has the same belt fishnet dark outfit as yelan and yae miko basically has the cutout outfit for most of their designs i would have loved it if ganyu had been given something that emphasized the qilin aspect, or generally looked more ethereal, but alas don’t get me started on how most of the women have whatever’s on their neck/shoulders disconnected from their chest to show their armpits… armpit impact??

The jitte and the military cords are the only parts of his design that tell you hes related to police work But they are so small and off the side that one of my friends didnt even realise he had a jitte. And i thought it was a wakizashi because of the handle. I think maybe if they made those parts of his design more prominent it would be better

As for the implication you dislike Ayato's design, I'm both curious as to why, and also if you've ever hear commentary about Ayaka being Edo Period Japan and Ayato being like the Meiji Era? his color palette definitely seems like it was made to compliment a darker skin tone, or at least a warmer skin tone. the skin tones in genshin, besides kaeya and xinyan ofc, lean towards the cooler end of the spectrum. heizou’s palette is full of warm colors, and while the contrast is nice, it would be more fitting for a warmer skin tone regardless, i really like his design and am excited for his release

I think Ganyu's design is kind of retroactively saved by Shenhe. On her own Ganyu looks off because her outfit doesn't quite match her personality, but putting her together with Shenhe makes it look more like tight-fitting full-bodysuits are just a thing in the Cloud Retainer household. And Shenhe's outfit is more sexy than Ganyu's, which helps to sell Ganyu as the more timid one of the two Shenhe singlehandedly changes the paradigm from "wtf Ganyu wouldn't wear that" to "Cloud Retainer is a birb of culture"

If you look close his clothes are kinda an altered tenryou commission uniform. His shirt looks different because of the cut sides/sleeves and turnt up collar but its actually pretty much the same as the shirts that tenryou commission npcs wear. also his shorts are reminiscent of the wide legged type pants that someone with martial training would have, which is also seen with kazuha. I think his design does really well to tell you what kinda guy he is personality wise through his career related clothing (everything weve seen about him makes sense that he'd alter his uniform)

- As an artist, and as a character designer specifically (though not full-time professionally), I have to object to the choice of using different tones of brown. Different saturations, different brightnesses within a colour are expected, but not the hue difference. The yellowish browns contrast poorly with the magenta reddish browns. The addition of the cool, jade-green eyes only serves to muddy it up more. It's like anko paste hair, mustard paste trousers, and wasabi eyes; it looks more like a meal than something visually coherent. - I'm surprised people didn't like this one, but liked Ayato's design. - Something I'm surprised not to see mentioned *ever* is that Heizou is likely supposed to look like a Sika Deer. Deer or Shika is the meaning of his name, and constellation "cervus minor"

I really love his design from the first moment I saw him in fb, he may look plain in the eyes of the others but that's what make me love him in the first place. His hair and eyes compliment each other, the moles further enhancing his pretty face. His outfit is good, the color scheme is a bit on the decent side but I grown to love it. Heizou's design in my opinion, is that type of design where he kind of throws you off, looks kind of plain from first sight but the more you look at it the more you notice some smaller details that add to his character or atleast that's from my perspective. Anyway Heizou you'll be coming home with me.

I really feel conflicted over his design because I both like his visual design (and alleged/potential skill design) but I feel like the way he’s portrayed in official content is just a lot more cerebral. Of course I wouldn’t want him to look like some stereotypical cliché western detective but I feel like his “analytical harmony” and “mind for meticulous logic and reasoning” part of his personality is just completely absent from his visual character design. I really get his “free-spirited and unruly, but cheerful and lively” personality from his design but that’s only part of his portrayed personality and I feel like the inclusion of the Jitte really isn’t enough to represent the whole other significant part of his personality. (*Leaks/unconfirmed*) I also feel similar with his kit and playstyle which I was excited to hear he was going to be the first male catalyst and first catalyst martial artist but again I really don’t think it fits his character as well as I would have liked it to. I think the martial arts approach with auto attacks would be fine for me if it was balanced with some more “cerebral” skills since detectives typically in general use their mind as one of their most valuable assets which with Heizou is even more confirmed with what has been said about his canonical skill set and analytical deduction skills. The only things that I really see that even slightly evoke his intellectual side of his personality are his Jitte and one of his idle animations. I mean he’s like a prodigy detective who’s only form of combat/gaining an upper hand on his opponents is just punching them in the face… Again I do really like his visual and gameplay design but I can’t help but feel like it’s a big missed opportunity that they could have better characterized his whole personality in his design more. I know Yanfei is another similar example where she doesn’t look anything at all like a lawyer but her kit at least evoked a powerful almost “ace attorney” feel and I think (from what I’ve seen so far) I’m just missing that balanced amount of characterization from Heizou. I think if his (potential) kit better matched his personality I’d like it a lot better. That and I’m just not a fan of the color mustard yellow lol

The thing is, we don;t actually know his personality because he hasn't even been added to the game. We can guess but I think people are being too judgemental about the whole 'personality' thing when it's not like we know for sure. The best it can be based on is the character voicelines, his field of work and his idles.

Like sure it’s been known for a while that he is a detective but HoYoverse has advertised his character with these certain traits that just aren’t really present enough in his overall visual design imo. Like they’ve made it a point to characterize him in a certain way but not follow through with it in their visual design choices and basically neglect these officially advertised traits. For me it’s like if they described a character in a bunch of flowy and airy descriptions like “soft and carefree like a gentle breeze” or “goes along with the wind” and then turns out they’re actually just an unga bunga geo claymore wielded who throws a cow as his skill lol

It is Mentioned that he is a "Self-Proclaimed Detective" Hence why he is Lacking the Aspects of a Detective. To Heizou, Being a Freelance Detective is more of a Hobby than an Actual Job. Without his Intelligence and Talent, he would've just been a Tenryou Enforcer.

Actually I really like the color palette that Heizou is designed with. It feels kinda smart actually. His colors (burgundy hair, tan or light brown pants, gold trimmings and red straps and highlights) can get people thinking that he's a Pyro or Geo user, when in actuality, he's an Anemo user. I can imagine his enemies getting the same idea while getting ready to fight him only to have the tides turned when they discovered that they guessed his Vision wrong.

At first I didn’t like it much because it never fit a detective theme which is what he is supposed to be, I figured he will have atleast a coat or a hat, it’s not like i thought this design was bad but Ayato did had sort of an westernized/ Japanese design and with that I assume heizou will also take some pieces of western designs in detectives to look more uniform. After learning he is a martial artist it now makes sense why he was design that way, because it’s impractical to be fighting in a coat. I just wish they lead with him stating he is a martial artist cause that what his design fits to more.

Funnily enough I think the color palette is okay, my main issue is that Heizou is just another small boy character with a baby face. You can't tell me that a martial artist has a body and build like that, I hate that anime trope where they're skinny asf yet can carry big ass swords like it's nothing.

Real muscle strength doesn't come from bulk though. Sure, you'll be toned, but bulky muscles don't have the strength of muscles you'd actually see on someone in a physical job. The work muscles are the lean ones. And martial arts were designed so smaller men were capable of fighting bulkier ones. Besides, he blows air at people.

Yup I'm one of the people that felt Heizou is meh in terms of color palette. I haven't seen what twitter felt about the colors, but I personally think White + Light Brown just makes him look basic. If he didn't have more intricate details and the distinct Jitte then I would have mistaken him as an NPC. Even his hairstyle is just ponytailed male genshin # 189273 with a black strip of all things. Perhaps my mind is looking for a striking highlight in his design other than just white. I do like the moles just straight under his eyes though. It's subtle but unique.

I don't mind color schemes being different from their respective elements, but what really puts me off from Heizou's design is the color of his shorts. I wish they just made it brown instead of a dirty orange-y gold... Like the tone of the short itself is different from tone of the browns on his waste. The design is good. Just the color of the short is yuck

oh yes his design as a whole looks much more cohesive. while i was expecting his hair color and mustad uniform clashing to signify his free-spiritedness, i couldn't like it as much as i do now that i actually saw his design in full. i was still going to pull for him regardless, everything else i'd seen of him so far has me excited to add him to my team

the basis of Heizuo’s design is actually quite similar to Xiao’s, especially comparing him to Xiao’s beta design. and something I realized about Xiao is that he actually only has subtle hints of green/turquoise, but they accent the many colors of his pallet. the turquoise stands out, and it’s apparent that it represents “anemo”. when i first saw Heizou’s design, it just felt like it was missing “anemo,” because i couldn’t tell whether those typical anemo colors fit in at all. i could imagine if he had some sort of jewelry or embellishments, or even have his eyes be a shade of green or blue- those colors would accentuate the red and brown and tie his design together with the image of anemo that other characters had already established. i’m being picky because his design is so freaking cute but i kind of miss having those elemental colors kind of tie the design together with a bow

Detectives are supposed to obviously "not stand out" since they have to carry out investigations without being caught to keen eyes, so i'm perfectly fine with how less-exaggerated his outfit looks, i still really like the pants or robes (i don't know what they are called sorry) look with the rope hanging with a weapon to the hips :D

When I saw Heizou's design and the Catalyst leak came out, I ended up vibing to the Air Gear theme-song on loop. Those arm and leg guards just really screams "Tornado Fist" and "Whirlwind Kick" to me when I know he's anemo.

About Heizou not looking like a detective...did some people just miss the part in his character description where it is stated that he tied his Tenryou commission jacket around his waist? He is deliberately choosing to be rulebreaker and not wear his jacket correctly. He is a martial artist who prefers to use words and dislikes combat. Just because the dude isn't covered in green and leaves, that doesn't make him less Anemo than others. Ffs, look at Yun Jin or Beidou.

what i like most about Heizou's design is that he's a Doushin, and he's technically wearing the regulation jacket, but it's just tied around his waist because he can't let his job get in the way of letting the world know he's one of the main characters.
