Great video. Thank you! May I add one point? Many beginners like me will draw something and it looks wrong (even awful) and we stop. Sometimes it’s because it’s not instantly obvious to us what exactly is wrong. So advancing to the step of solving specific problems can’t happen if we can’t first identify what they are. I suggest two obvious steps before just giving up and quitting. First, put it away and come back in a few days and make a list of things to check like proportions, perspective, shading, texture, line widths, etc. Then look at the drawing again with those aspects in mind. Are the proportions okay? Measure them and actually check some. Are the shadows where they should be and are they the right value compared to the lit areas. And so on. If you still can’t figure out what’s wrong, then share the drawing with someone else (anybody, really, but don’t ask your grandmother cuz she’ll just lie and tell you it’s perfect; so preferably someone experienced) and ask them what they think could be improved with your drawing. Then start the problem solving process like Alphonso suggests.

Most definitely! Awesome tips! These are points I have addressed in previous videos and will definitely reiterate them again. I usually suggest having a model or standard to refer to. Thanks much

Alphonso, I just got your Pen&Ink Drawing book on Kindle. Wow! You explain things so clearly. I’ve been drawing and painting for 20 years but I have learned so much from your book. You really break it down in understandable terms. When I was in college art I learned nothing. All we did was ‘experiment’…with little guidance. You give solid concepts that I can follow. I can’t wait to put them into practice and start making better art!

Couldn’t agree more. If I’m not making "mistakes", then I’m not learning/growing. Worse, I’m probably repeating myself & that means I’m not growing creatively either. I’m retired now & focus mostly on card design & mixed media. In my work life, I was a scientist so I jumped immediately to the problem solving paradigm which comes naturally

Thank-you for this video Alphonso! I have been following you for years, and it's so nice to see someone else with a science-based background explaining art! 👏👏👏👏👏 I know you used to be a chemistry teacher, and I think that gives you the analytical mind you need to study and learn.. well, just about anything and everything! I also have a science-based education, and I'm wondering how you balance your love for science with your love for art. For me, I love both in equal measure, and all that really does is make my days feel very short, as I'm constantly busy, and trying to find time to do a bit of both - and that includes personal projects and professional projects... so how does one balance all of this? I feel like I just cannot abandon either art or science... so I'm going to try to maintain my careers in BOTH.. wish me luck! Thank-you for this video and for being such a fantastic art teacher, too 😃😃😃😃😃

Hello, I wanted to say that I really love your videos, they're easy to understand and very captivating 😁. It's been several months since I started watching them but I never really tried to pick up a pen/pencil seriously for various other things I needed to do. I just wanted to ask if that book is suggested for a complete amateur (never really draw anything seriously).
