Your sports team wins. The confetti drops. And suddenly, the video quality falls apart. Why? Let's talk about interframe compression, bitrate, and unnecessary green screen effects.

One thing I didn't expect: the quality actually returns half a second before the confetti stops! KZbin's encoding is a little smarter than I thought it was - I'd guess it worked out there'd be some spare bits coming up and used them to fill in the gaps.

So a lot of people might not remember this but this video watching experence was slightly different when it came out. KZbin has improved its quality over the years as has our internet connections. When Tom Scott says "over the next couple of seconds the quality of the video will come back" it was literal, it use to take a second or two for the quality to return. Now though? The quality instantly comes back within a fraction of a second. Maybe a few frames worth of low quality video but that's all that you can see now. Literally blink-and-you'll-miss-it. The same effect also would apply to when he increased the bitrate in the video. The quality used to still be rough for a few seconds.

It’s true. Foliage is one of the most bit rate-intensive things in video. When I once filmed a forested path with an iPhone XS camera in H.264 with approximately 17 Mbps (the set bit rate of an iPhone with 1080p 25 fps video), I could still see some artifacture in the distance. However, whenever I use my Canon EOS R5 using the same resolution and frame rate, and the IPB setting (approximately 28 Mbps for 1080p 25 fps) any and all artifacts are gone, but that’s probably also due to the much larger sensor, which makes the detail much more easy to distinguish.

I remember doing some quick math once for figuring out the bit rate needed for a 1080p video at 24 frames per second, and being shocked at how high it was and wondering how my internet speed could handle playing videos. Thank you for this information. I'm over here recording video games, editing/encoding/uploading those videos, and I've been learning a lot through this. I see other people post videos that looks sharper, and I ask myself, "what do I need to improve?". I just figured out one of my problems with audio delay occurring in some recordings as the result of render delay. I am Streaming/Recording/Playing at the same time, which limits my ability to use maximum settings because of increased render delay. Now I'm looking at recording bitrate, and someone sent me this video. I've learned a lot!

Excellent video, as usual, Tom. Congrats. I must say, though, that analog video was also compressed. NTSC and PAL were analog compression systems, not just a color scheme. Lots of information were discarded by those systems, especially on the chroma chanel, otherwise air broadcasting would have been impossible.

+Diogo Figueiredo Yes! That's why I put "massive simplification" there. They did all sorts of tricks just to make colour work at all - but they didn't fail in the same way, so I thought I'd just gloss over it!
@jogennotsuki
@jogennotsuki 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Scott Long before NTSC and PAL, there was interlacing - which is, in fact, the very first video compression method and it has been in use consistently since the days of mechanical television. So saying that analog TV signals were uncompressed borders on being simply wrong, rather than just a "massive simplification". As a historical anecdote, it is perhaps interesting to note that Fritz Schröter, the engineer largely responsible for the spread of interlaced TV in continental Europe in the 1930s was also one of the first to ever propose interframe compression. What was missing at the time was a storage method to hold reference frames.
@DGFig
@DGFig 8 жыл бұрын
+Tom Scott You're absolutely right. I'm usually picky for those things, but you had to keep it simple. That's why you told people who already knew about compression to go somewhere else. Anyway, I loved the video. Your attention to detail while editing makes your work stand out even more.

Also, interlacing is compression of sorts. it reduces the size of each single frame to be half as much data, but transmitted twice as often. It doesn't reduce the total amount sent, but it reduces bandwidth needed per signal. Handy when you only have 6 or 8mhz to send a signal in, but a way to send data at the same speed constantly.
