Being from the UK, and thus was able to see more of doncic and the euro league than I did of NBA at the time, I was really shocked he wasn’t unanimous number one and being already considered the greatest draft prospect since LeBron or possibly even before that. Like the only question about him was his one on one defence and athleticism, but I always felt that with his size and IQ he’d end up being at least average in these places, and that he wasn’t even that bad of an athlete, he just wasn’t elite
@sabahaddinzaim4 жыл бұрын
I felt the same, having been watching both NBA and Euroleague closely myself because me being A half Turkish Fenerbahçe fan, I was really shocked that the suns didn't pick him with the first pick. I was also really impressed because Doncic did all those things, such as leading Real to Championship over my favourite team after losing to them last year before the finals, was really impressive. Granted if Fenerbahçe could have grabbed the rebound at the end, they could've at least overtime. Doncic was a superstar in the making, and beside from Euroleague fans mostly, people wouldn't know it. I was a little spectacle on his defence and athleticism too, but I was still sure Luka was worth it regardless of it.

Colin Cowherd, as much as we all love to rag on him, once made a really good point about taking international prospects with a top pick. When you're a front office with one of these picks that you've been bad for a year in order to get, there's a ton of pressure and you have to run this decision past the owner of the team first. The owner is a billionaire, so he definitely isn't watching Euroleague tape or Euroleague games. He probably does, however, have general knowledge about college basketball and probably thinks he knows more than he does. (Looking at you, Vivek) If you run the team in Phoenix, the owner probably knows about the kid from University of Arizona. Every owner probably knows how good Duke basketball is. Your owner probably heard about this hotshot Trae Young kid or may have watched a few of these domestic prospects in the tournament. He's probably pushing you to draft the domestic prospect, or even if he isn't, the domestic prospect is easier to sell as a good plan. Sure, you could stick your neck out and push to draft the international prospect, but it's your ass on the line. All these kids have a significant chance to bust. If the domestic prospect busts you can tell your owner "Hey, we both liked this guy, we both got fooled, we're in this together" and probably keep your job. If the international kid you stuck your neck out for busts, you get fired. So all in all, even if you know the Euroleague prospect is better, if you think the kid from Duke is good too, GMs are going to take the Duke kid that the owner likes.

As a Kings fan, I was so upset when they passed on Luka. Arguing with Kings fans that he would take the ball away from Fox, or we already have Bogi so we do not need Luka, as if they were the same player, seemed so ridiculous......the NBA is driven by talent! PERIOD! If you have the 2nd pick, don't over-think it and grab the best player.....Luka was by far the obvious pick with his accomplishments in a professional league, not amateur ball. Made no sense at all.....plus his passing was elite which would of helped every player on the Kings, esp Buddy and Bogi. I am still upset that my Kings passed on him. Just absolutely STUPID! Marvin Bagley is talented but I felt you guys had invested alot of draft stock in big men the last few years and were fine there (Willie Cauley-Stein, Harry Giles, etc). Bagley may still turn out to be a franchise player, though, if he can get past the nagging injuries.

As I see it, there are 5 categories in international prospects, if we are talking achivements -Luka Doncic (nobody has ever been as good as fast, so he is in a category of his own) -Early 20s all star of one of the european big leagues (guys like Pau, Gallinari, Parker or Rubio go here, guys who have won serious individual awards like all-star, all-League, MVP or finals/playoffs MVP in one of the big european leagues and are still under 23 years old) -19 to early 20s solid player in a big team or selected in a young players team in a big league (most of the guys mentioned in the video go here, also guys like Porzingis or Juancho, or Deni Avidja from the upcoming draft) -Umproven 19 to early 20s player with tons of potential but who has not played in any of the big european leagues at the moment they are drafted (this are the boom or bust prospects, Nowitzki, Giannis or Jokic where in this category when they were drafted). -Young but more veteran player alredy stablished in the big European leagues, those are risky since they might just go back, also a lot of them were drafted years prior to being incorporated into the league. This category has more to do with evaluating possible free agents and rights of a player for a trade that draft picks (Scola, Bjelica, Marc Gasol, Ginobili and Navarro were part of this category when they came to the league) The first category is not very usefull until another player like Doncic comes along. The second category will most likely get you a solid player, and upside is posible but not guaranteed. The next two are pretty much a wildcard, and I doubt they should be taken heavily into account when evaluating a prospect. The last one is just a risk factor teams have to take into account.

Michael Lewis has some great writing on this in The Undoing Project. Even NBA coaches and GMs tend to assume players are more similar to other players of the same racial background who look like them than they are to players from different races who play like them, and this makes the teams make a lot of mistakes. He talks about one team that improved its drafts by insisting that if you ever compare a prospect to a known player in a meeting it has to be a player from a different race to avoid that subconscious bias. The Harden comparison being more accurate than the comparisons to other Europeans is a great example of how this works.

If he didnt have such a baby face you would think he is a 10 year veteran with how composed he was and still is. I remember some of the 2018 draft prospects were interviewed a few weeks after starting the season and Luka was there. They were asked about how it is to be a pro basketball player and if they are worried about burning out with all the responsibilities. When answering i felt Luka was surprised getting asked this. To be honest Drazen Petrovic had those amazing numbers at young age too. He led local team Cibona to back to back Euroleague championships at the age of 20 and 21 and was an important player of the Yugoslav team at 1984 Olympics at the age of 19. He was drafted by Portland when he was 21, but actually arrived to play there much later, when he was not an young prospect anymore. We'll never find out how'd he develop if he got there earlier. Tony Kukoc was great at young age as well, won 3 Euroleague championships and 3 final 4 MVP's in his European career. First championship when he was 20 and first final 4 MVP when he was 21.

Said it before, saying it again... Looking at his achievements before the draft, NO BRAINER.. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE OBVIOUS NUMBER 1 PICK

0:49 lmao where did they get those stats? right side is completely wrong and left side, if you compare it to NCAA, Luka had it harder in EU so he would have easier time then guys from NCAA
@nigeljalandra75854 жыл бұрын
I think it started with Ricky Rubio. He had a way bigger hype than any of the guys mentioned and even though he’s had a solid career, he was supposed to be the premier PG in the draft class and some were arguing on taking him 1 overall ahead of Blake Griffin. Fast forward to 2020, in a class with Curry and Harden, Rubio kinda seemed like a bad no5 pick. Especially considering what the wolves did for him before he even got there.

If Luka isn't as good, than ask yourself why did Michel Jordan gave him a sneakers contract that is worth more than the one he gave Zion...

imo Luka is best player ever to enter the NBA. Watching both Euorpean ball and NBA equally. I remember being so pissed of at media criticising him despite admitting they have never watched him. It still angers me now. No one have mentioned Killian Hayes on ESPN not once, and barely discussed Deni who I think will be ROTY

Just to add for Jan Vesely that he played primarily as SF, and he was really unique as he is so athletic and long for that position in Euroleague, but he never had solid jump shot. When he came in NBA he was never seen as SF but rather PF or C as he is playing today. So yes, he is a bust in NBA, but maybe in other circumstances (if NBA didn't moved to be 3pt shot must have)... But of course he was never near talent of Luka, and he also played for a lower stacked team.
@adriandaliva13414 жыл бұрын
as of his game now, his only subpar play is in his off-ball play, most likely attributed to how much load he has to do (mavs need another starter-caliber playmaker

There are many overlooked european prospects before they get drafted or even after they get drafted. This includes Tony Parker, Dirk Nowitzki and Manu Ginobili. Yes, Manu played in Europe after he got drafted. Just because there are some high draft bust from Europe as well, people are easily judged every european players will have high bust potential without even realize that bust could go to anybody. Even many high prospects from NCAA could turn to be bust (Bennet, Williams, MKG, Morrison, Fredette, Oden, Swift, Thabeet and many more).

suns had his international coach which he won the previous euro's with.. kings had a gm that knew his father and was well aware of how good he was(or he is even pettier then everybody thinks). This draft was very fishy.

Like everyone played close to 40 MPG back then 😂😂 The NBA has evolved so much, the talent pool has gotten so much bigger that people don't have to play that many minutes.

Greatest start to a career for first 2 years in NBA history for a player that was under 20. Yeah some guys like Wilt and Oscar had better starts but they played 4 years of college and were 22 as a rookie.

Don't compare the EL of the 90s with the EL of today. The international game wasn't as developed then. Now it looks like an extension of the NBA.

He was the second PG for Madrid, he was lucky that the first PG Sergi Llull (one of the best guards in Europe) had a long term injury in the preparation for the European tournament so he took the role of starting PG and performed an excellent season in Euroleague and ACB becoming the MVP in both competitions at the age of 18 . I would only agree with the decision the Hawks took, they got Trae Young + 2019 1st round pick. Kings and Suns selected very immature players
@danakaleb48824 жыл бұрын
Because if Lull didn’t have that injury, Luka wouldn’t be as good? Luka didn’t see it as lucky. it was a tragedy, but he stepped up to occasion. Everybody was doubting him but himself. That’s why I’m laughing at those saying he’ll be bust in playoffs. Can’t stop greatness. Maybe he would need one year more to come to this level, but that’s all. Hawks were plain stupid. I wouldn’t trade LeBron, Jordan, Bird for Trae and Cam Reddish, sorry.

LeBron didn't, Allen Iverson didn't, Melo didn't. Why should have Luka made it? Every single player that made it over him, deserved it. The only one you could make an argument replacing with Luka was Kyle Lowry. He averaged 14 9 and 5, but had a big role in the Raptors winning 58 games. DBook has been averaging 25 5 and 4 on great efficiency for the past 4 years, but he's made an all-star game only once. Stats aren't everything when it comes to getting accolades (All-NBA, All-Star, etc...)
@pzooka4 жыл бұрын
Humble You’re really going to sit here and chalk everything Luka has been doing up to just being “good stats”. The man had a historical rookie season. You are a fool to mention Devin Booker in the same sentence as Luka.

Luka was the most obvious number 1 pick since LeBron. I tweeted about him before the draft. I knew he was the guy. I couldn't believe when my team picked MY guy. And I was right. It's been so validating watching all this unfold. Luka will have 20 year career, be a 15 time all Star. Multiple league MVPs. Finals MVP. Screen cap this and hit me up in 2038.

I before the 2018 draft believed Luka was a better pick than Ayton. Ayton may have been the more athletically talented and known pick, but Luka had a better basketball IQ and was a better distributer, two traits that almost all franchise players have. These two things lead me to believe that Luka had a higher ceiling than Ayton at the time, which turned out to surprisingly be true.
