@@wilhelm4321 Well, it's a very archaic view. As someone who did military service service, I can tell you, that I could be more useful literally anywhere else. I had very poor skills, and nobody gave me any work, and I also had bad discipline. Like, they literally wish I wasn't there. And I'm not the only one. Many people aren't very useful. Also, when it's a mandatory service, it usually means that people lack motivation and skills. It's only symbolic, but not practical. And hardly patriotic, because you don't do it out of free will. I mean, what's the point of military service if you don't even love your country? There are so many ways to actually serve your country. For example, I know an investor who could easily invest in startups in other, cheaper countries with more skilled labor. But he invests in Israel, even though it's expensive and taxes are high. He loses a lot of money, but he wants to help the local industry. Some people, after making a career abroad, return to Israel to teach Israelis for very low fees, or even for free. Some donate money, food, and toiletries to the army or to hospitals. Some pursue careers that forbid them from leaving the country.

The other half are known as "Litvaks"(Lithuanian). Haredim is a more accurate, all-encompassing term. 0:44 (and throughout the video) This is a neighborhood known as Ramat Bet Shemesh A. It contains a mix of many different streams of orthodox jews, some who do and always have served in the IDF. It is hardly a bastion of Haredi society. The flags shown at 3:00 are quite a common sight around here. 0:55 They are already exempt. The law merely attempted to change the exemption age.
