TWO POINTS: 1. This video is not about "my state is better than yours." If your state is better, it is because of factors that were beyond your control. So do not start "culture wars" here. The point of the video is to recognise the differences and look for historical factors that explain them. For people who view that your state is perfect, recognise that crimes against women are a norm in most parts of India. Just because it is better than in another part of India, it doesn't make it acceptable. 2. For the purpose of this video, have used a loose definition of "North" and "South" India. While I understand there are many differences across Indian states (because as we know each state in our country can be viewed as a different country!), found that this simplistic division could help us understand the issue at least at a broad, macro level.

I stayed in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu for 5 years due to father's job transfer. I am originally from north India and let me tell you, south india does the *FREE* job of being the heaven on earth. It's natural beauty is astounding, South Indians are proud people especially regarding their language and culture and even today, we see families follow old traditions during festivals. Somehow they haven't lost their culture after all this time. One of my family friends who is a mallu had his wedding recently and he is filthy rich, like come on most mallus are but still he kept a very simple and a traditional wedding. I swear i am gonna buy a house in south one day and stay there 💙😭

In South India when a girl has her first mensuration period we celebrate that thing as a festival or marriage all people are invited to bless that girl and food is served to them. The idea of respect to women in Southern India is also deeply rooted in the culture. In Tamil Culture, women were always given importance as seen in sangam era epics and poems more than two thousand years old. Out of 5 major tamil epics, 3 of them are centered around women in lead roles - Silapadhigaram, Manimegalai and Kundaladesi. Remaining 2 epics have men as lead characters. Silapathigaram - The story of the epic revolves around the legendary Kannaki who set out to avenge the death of her husband Kovalan at the hands of a Pandya king. Manimegalai - Manimekalai is the name of the daughter of Kovalan and Madhavi, who follows in her mother's footsteps as a dancer and a Buddhist nun.The epic tells her story. Kundalakesi - The epic is a story about a rich merchant's daughter kundalakesi and is about love, marriage, getting tired with the married partner, murder and then discovering religion coming to tamil female poets, there were 3 AVVAILYARS known in Tamil during various sangam periods. Avvaiar means respectable lady and history says that there were 3 avvaiyars who lived during various times and contributed to tamil literature. even now, our kindergarteners starts with aathichoodi and other avvaiyar poems when they start studying tamil. There were also multiple other female poets respected equally throughout tamil history. Another important reason for respect to women also comes from workshopping Amman. Every village will have at least one amman temple, which is typically some variation of female goddesses localized to each village. Amman temples, festivals and workships are part of overall tamil culture and probably i would say we have more temples for amman than ganesh /muruga/ vishnu. All these are thoroughly rooted across generations rooted into people mentality and women being seen as integral part of society and with respect.

I'm glad I was able to grow up in such an environment, it also helped me grow up more tolerant. All of my female friends I'm really close with, have confirmed that they've never had any case of assault or harassment here. Most of us have never faced racism. I take no hesitation in conforming with the title, South India IS much ahead of the North in matters as such, and before you're too quick to judge my assumption, I must tell you that I've visited the North India extensively. I've visited Sikkim too, and Sikkim is my favorite state in all of India. Really clean, wonderful people, extremely safe and wonderful walking street, and love the sights.

I'm from Kerala and I'm quite disturbed that no one talks about North East India. It's like most of the Indians are ignorant about them. Never forget that they are also our brothers and sisters. I hate this government so much, they don't do anything for these people. Edit: so some triggered Indians and BJP supporters replied with things BJP has achieved for the north east. But I wonder why the north east people are not feeling the same thing. People calling them Chinese, it’s ok? People being racist towards them because of the corona virus and it is also ok?! So I’m not going to believe anyone unless a north East Indian actually tells that the government is doing the right thing for them😬 Y’all think it’s ignorance but the irony is you people are ignorant towards the north east people’s opinion.

Do checkout the infrastructure projects that have happened in the last 3 years in the NE states. Numerous artificial bridges(Meghalaya), roads, railway connections and hydroelectric projects(Arunachal Pradesh) have been built, and a lot of economic activity seems to be increasing in the area. I do not know if it is intended at getting those votes, or genuine budget allocations, but I wouldn't exactly say "the present government does not do anything for these people"

Outsider here (Bangladeshi woman). I lived in kochi for about two months for my father's treatment. This was my first time out of my homeland, and I was all alone since my father was in the hospital the whole time. Yet, the entire experience was unbelievably liberating. Not only I felt completely safe roaming around many places, so many people were so kind to me. Despite the language Barrier, they helped me to get on the right buses, give directions etc. Honestly, I didn’t have a single bad experience in my two months there- and I went out a lot- something I can never do in my own country. I haven’t been to North India, so I can't really comment on that, and my experience to the south is limited to a relatively small area for only two months- but I've never gone two months in my own country without any street harrasement, so there's that. I hope to have a thorough trip to the south one day.

@EXTREME South Indians don't really care about other South Indians let alone North Indians, only on internet there are so many weird and rude people that people behave weird and rude to them. Be it a South Indian or North Indian, see yourself for that. I don't really find anything disgusting or ridiculous in celebrating menstruation. It's such a fun, happy even pious event here in South. I once asked my dad why do we have to celebrate my sister's menarche wouldn't she be embarrassed, he told me we did this so that she doesn't feel left out and remeber her days of becoming a woman from a girl and share her fun and memories with her friends and future family. It's a party-like, the girl recieves all the love and gifts from all family and neighbours. And it's an upscale suburb where we live. Posh people just make it like a big home party with quick or no ceremony along family and friends. Both Hindus and Christians do this. It's a complete huge ceremony in middle classes. Lower classes generally do not.

I think this disgusting mentality of yours is the main reason for unsafe environment for women in the north. Pity those north Indian girls being surrounded by such narrow minded guys😒 even we are disgusted with the attitude of boys family ( all over India) who demands endless dowry. But in this ceremony they don't demand anything from the girls. But they shower their blessings instead ( also its the duty of the relatives to give "Seer" ie., money or anything equivalent to it for the security of the girl child ). I strongly believe this is a symbol of a progressive society. I am proud to be a part of a comparatively open minded society.

I'm a kerala woman from South India. I have lived all over India because my parents were in army. Kerala is the safest for women. If you get raped or molested, nobody will tell you to hide it. Otherwise there's no other explanation for high crime rate. Though Kerala had Muslims before the Mughals, even the Muslims did not follow purdah system in which full face was covered until recent times due to the influence of gulf countries ( when many keralites went to work in gulf). But Kerala Muslims or Hindus or even Christians do not fit into the stereotypical Indian Muslim, Hindu or Christian. To understand that please personally visit Kerala. It is nothing like the BJP make it out to be.

I agree. Northeast is very better in woman safety. Now northeast has to improve on creating infrastructure. Northeast has a lot of tourism potential but the usage of it is very minimal. Every northeastern state has to come together to create a tourism plan. As a keralite I plan to visit northeast but due to the lack of facilities its very hard to visit northeast. More airports has to build in northeast and having better infrastructure results increase in tourism which creates more jobs. Take example from my state Kerala. Half of our economy is from tourism.

I have been living in Chennai, and you can see, in almost every supermarket, petrol stations, even roadside tea/coffee stalls, scores of women working. Even during late hours. And that's how you make a city safe for women. In south, most women are told to study, go out and work, and provide for the family. With more people working, it also affects the economy of the state. Hence why GDP is much higher in south compared to north.

If you look at the schools like kendriya vidyalaya which is there all over india, you see the difference. All the KV’s in the south perform well, with dedicated teachers and the results are quite good and considered equivalent to good private schools. While in the north , according to my experience i felt many teachers were less dedicated in KV’s. Most of them came from rich family’s through recommendations and was time pass for them, but we had some very good south indian and bengali teacher who were dedicated in our delhi schools. I hardly remember 1 or 2 good north indian teachers whom made a good impact on us, when studying in Delhi. KV’s in north india are considered equivalent to some government school. I remember when in delhi a grade2 child from DPS who used to come play at our house asked me once, “ aap do rupay ke school mein padte ho na ?“ . I asked her who told you ,she told mummy ne bola. Look at the mentality. As a KV student no one compares like this in south. I studied in KV’s because my father had a transferable job not because we don’t have money to pay school fees like many northern people consider. No idea how KV’s in the east and west india are, but i’m sure better than DELHI.

Southern India has seen less barbarian rule and less degradation compared to the North. Education is another one big factor.

I'm from Telangana, When I was born my family celebrated like a festival because my Grandfather believes that Girl child's are The Lakshmi Swaroopam.. BTW I'm Christian.. Actually my grandfather have all son's, there is no girl child in our family... My grandfather's father had no sisters nd my grandfather had no sisters nd daughters, that's why they celebrated my birthday as a festival... Nd I'm 22 and I didn't get married 😊 My parents believe that, men r women both Are used to stand on their own feet.. so that's why they don't ask about marriage.. when I was settled, than our parents discuss about my marriage 😊😊 Hi East, West ppl 🌸✨
