Never did I think I would pay the price of a Speed Queen for a washer. But from what I'm seeing, I should save money in the long run when it comes to repairs. Plus, my wife's 32 year old Kitchen Aid (that still runs, but is close to the end) has her spoiled when it comes to simplicity, and cleaning cloths. From my research I find the Speed Queen is simple, reliable, and will clean dirty cloths as well as her old Kitchen Aid. She has picked out the TC5, and we will order it this Saturday.

I have a Speed Queen washer and dryer made in 1998. They are actually branded as "Amana commercial quality" washer and dryer but they are really Speed Queens with a slightly fancier control panel. They look and operate like new and I have only had to replace the drive belt in the washer.

Have you heard of the tub bearing and lip seal problem I'm on my 2nd one in 10 years on my AWN432SP The main bearing where the tub sits on the transmission wears out and seal goes bad leaks. It's a poor design cost to pay someone to replace it is $600 I had to do it myself because talking about 2/3 the cost of a new one. 766p3a is the parts kit from Amazon.

I am in 5 years now with a TR7 and the matching dryer.. no issues with it.. i will say that im thinking about getting a TC5 (or the commercial version) to have for my diesel engine clothes.. while ive domne well with getting the diesel clothes clean on the TR7 by using some dawn platinum in my wash.. and the "poor man's double wash - which is some soap in the fabric softener dispenser and the extra rinse selected" I do something think a real aggressive wash action might be better for those.. one thing to remember too is that SQ upped the wash action a bit from 2018 to 2019.. so those complaining about the 2018 TR series might find the 2019+ are somewhat better.. mine is a 2019 and works good.. also learn hopw to load it and set it.. just a;ways setting max water level in a TR is NOT the best way to clean.. ive found the Auto level to get clothes the cleanest.. my regular every day clothes set on auto, with light soil level and speed cycl;e get done in 30 minutes and are clean as can be.. the TR is much different than many are used to but for most families it will do a fine jon.. if you are getting a washer for a shop, business or a laundromat where people typically overload the machines.. I would stick with the old style transmission agitator machine.. I have had zero luck finding the vintage whirlpool washer id love to have as my second machine.. so i'll likely get a TC5 for my diesel clothes..

Blake, first thank you for the video, this is very good and accurate information. We've owned 2 sets of Speed Queen top load washers/dryers. We're a military family and the only reason we've sold the 2 sets were because we moved somewhere where we couldn't take them. My question though is, how do the newer front load Speed Queens perform vs the traditional top load? Do the SQ front load get the smell issues and mildew build up that most of the other front load machines get? We are moving back to the US this summer from Europe and will be buying another set but debating between the simplicity of the traditional top load and the front load. Also, since you are a repair tech, are there any other brands besides SQ that you recommend? SQ are some of the smallest capacity machines on the market today and we have a very large family. With our top load we do 2-3 loads everyday and it would be nice to have a larger capacity machine to cut that down to 1-2 loads. But we would never want to sacrifice the quality we've had with the SQ's. We average 18-21 loads a week and both sets were bullet proof (unlike a Samsung set we had before and 3 Bosch machines we've gone through so far in 3 years in Europe).

I think that the TC5000 (Classic) fills a really important niche in todays market. It is the perfect machine for some people, and for those people no other washer can come close. I really love Speed Queen's front load laundry and I personally feel like it's deeply underrepresented. I live in a Rural, Ag-dominated area and front-load Speed Queens are incredible for the farmers that are willing to use them. That being said, imho Speed Queen has become pretty overrated. They are not the paragon of reliability that they think they are. In some ways they are just like the machines of 40 years ago, in some ways they are just like other modern machines. Their marketing is often deceptive, preying on people's nostalgia. They are not 100% made in the USA. They do use electronic controls (thank you for mentioning that Blake) from a foreign board partner. I appreciate the benefits from electronic controls over electromechanical solutions, but in my own experience, Speed Queen's electronic controls have mediocre reliability compared to their competition. In 2021 specifically, Speed Queen had the second highest rate of warranty service for me, and I did warranty work on a dozen brands (whirlpool/maytag/amana/etc = 1 brand). I guess you can stay profitable with long warranties and poor reliability if the upfront cost of the machine is high enough lol. I know that it was addressed a couple of years ago now, but the basket balancing ring used to disintegrate because it didn't fit in the basket properly because the manufacturing tolerances were too loose. I vividly remember conversations with customers who bought Speed Queens because the salesman said "they never break down," only to have their machine tear their clothes and dent their drywall from this recall issue. Speed Queen may be the right laundry brand for some other service techs. LG has been the right brand for me.

I agree with what you're saying to a point, but would still buy another SQ. I bought a SQ TC5 classic, the circuit board needed to be replaced within one year, but was covered under warranty. I think they are overpriced, and they are only "as good" as a regular washing machine from 30+ years ago. They're not miraculous, they just wash laundry well, and should last 25 years. For me, it was a simple cost benefit analysis... buy one overpriced SQ that should last 25 years, or buy 4 inferior machines that will end up costing me more over that time period. I bought one hoping it will last like old appliances used to. Everyone else has gotten used to the new normal of buying new appliances every 8 years, but that is unacceptable to me. With planned obsolescence, every other brand is crap, so I guess SQ will do. I have not used LG washers, but I have had terrible experience with all of their other appliances. My house came with mostly LG appliances that are about 5-7 years old. The LG Linear Compressor fridge is trash, and the dishwasher has already needed all the major components replaced (under home warranty). The dishwasher does wash well, but my next one will be a Bosch/Miele purely for longevity.
@englesledgehammer
@englesledgehammer 4 ай бұрын
@@FlufferNutterSandwich Speed Queen tells consumers to expect a 25 year life span. Certainly some of their machines will last that long. I am really skeptical that a majority of the SQ machines sold today will make it to 25. 25/8 is much closer to 3:1 than 4:1, but, of the consumers that will get 25 years from a SQ, I expect them to get 10+ years from even some of the basic Amana top loads. Reliability is one one of the factors keeping typical appliance turnover less than 10 years. Even if the appliance is fully functional, many modern consumers will choose to replace it in under 10 years because they want new colors or new features. I have great respect for the consumers that don't need a new-shiny toy periodically, and for them, SQ is more likely to be a good fit (particularly the TC5). The point is, even if reliability was the same, SQ might "outlive" other brands just because of consumer behavior. I have a big granite slab that I beat my laundry against to clean it. It will outlive a Speed Queen by hundreds of years, but that doesn't make it a better washer ;) I have used a SQ AWN412 as my shop washer, and I have loved it in that role. I do my personal laundry in an LG WM3555HWA and I wouldn't even consider replacing it with a top-load SQ when it dies some day.

@@pittmanx6 ehh no need. I have used speed queens before when I lived in an apartment complex 10 years ago. I hated having to wait in front of the washer whenever I washed my king comforter. Had to push it down under water because the agitator could not circulate. A slightly larger capacity would’ve helped mediate that, a dual action agitator would’ve completely solved it. Honestly the agitator doesn’t even need to be dual action, GE’s one piece heavy duty agitator actually does a great job circulating. All Speed Queen has to do is redesign the vanes to the upper half of the agitator so it does better moving things down. Zero complexity added

I was once a huge Speed Queen stan, loving that I could control water level, temperatures, etc. with manual controls. We had the top-loading AWN432 washer and its matching dryer. The washer is wonderful - still have it in the garage - but the dryer had two heat sensor failures within only 4 years of use, so to the crusher it went. For this reason I wouldn’t buy SQ again. 😢. We instead bought the LG WM8900 front loading washer with dryer and so far they’ve been excellent.

The thermo fuse in our Speed Queen dryer has blown twice in 8 years. I keep a spare and can replace it in less than 10 minutes, they are cheap. It has never blown on me, but I always do full loads. It only blows on my wife's loads. I think it is because she does partial loads with lightweight materials and runs it too long.

@muziklvr7776 Those are truly too new. A good set would need to be older than 30 to 40 years. Back then, they were made of quality materials. They were not made energy efficient, were water waisters, and not generally gentle on clothes. There are good things in the newer washer/dryer, at least at the one that I am looking at. Sadly, it seems like the most one can get is 10 years or 15 if you are lucky. The pair we have at our complex is about 14 years and is going strong, beyond the abuse of all the tenants.

A longer warranty is also a paid "extended warranty." This will be a factor in the upfront cost of buying this brand vs what you might have been able to save/invest elsewhere. "Best" is relative, especially when only considered repair rates or life expectencies. The logic here is that a washer that never needs repair is OK even if it uses more water than alternatives, because water is an infinite resource that will never run out.

Some people seem to be oblivious to one key deciding factor here, the price of the appliance. With all due respect, every American (obviously) doesn't have $1200 or more dollars to spend upfront on a washing machine. Now don't get me wrong, I completely understand why Speed Queen washing machines cost so much, it's because of them being built with commercial grade parts and complex machinery to get clothes thoroughly cleaned. But here's the problem, if Speed Queen is supposed to be the leading laundry appliance brand when it comes to reliability, dependability, cleaning performance, and durability, then why aren't there flexible payment options? Yes, one could get a credit card, but then now your credit history comes into play, and that's a whole nother conversation altogether. There's no lease-to-own options that I'm aware of, and it seems that the ONLY option is to buy a Speed Queen washer or a whole set UPFRONT. The sad fact is that everybody doesn't have the financial prowess to be able to afford premium quality stuff. A washing machine brand like Speed Queen that has a remarkably reputable reputation of methodically producing commercial quality laundry machines should have more flexible payment options, otherwise many Americans will continue to have no choice but to buy the notoriously flimsy washing machines that's been produced by other companies for the past couple of decades. GE [General Electric] is a shining exception to this however, at least with the high end model that my family has had for four years and counting without a single issue, and it's been through some of the most rigorous and roughest wash loads that other high efficiency washing machines would instantly break at the seams trying to handle, plus it has a WARM RINSE option and a direct drive transmission on top of that, and the matching dryer runs like a dream. And the ONLY reason why we were able to get this high end washer and dryer set was because of having a lease-to-own payment option, and they're paid off now. So what's the moral of the story here? It's simple, Speed Queen should at least have a lease-to-own payment option if they want their commercial quality washing machines to be more accessible to the public, otherwise they'll only be accessible to those who are wealthy with beefy bank accounts, case and point.

@@Enigmaculate Americans use credit cards and pay over time manufacturer-sponsored incentives, in this case those may be provided by the store the washers are sold at. Buying a used washer is also a good option. And do not buy a new car, "dude".
@Enigmaculate
@Enigmaculate Ай бұрын
@@nsbioy You're missing one critical detail, you have to have good to excellent credit in order to get approved for a credit card the majority of the time. And the credit system is notoriously broken in America, it's geared more towards the wealthy to make a long and sordid story short. And as far as a used washing machine goes, there's risks that comes with that, it's obviously been used by previous owners (hence the word " used "), and you have no idea if the washer was disinfected, cleaned thoroughly, and if any repairs or replacements were made to any worn down parts, and I'm not just talking about cosmetic wear and tear, I'm talking about wear and tear to MAJOR components. Also, stop comparing buying a washing to buying a car, there's a LOT more hoops to jump through when getting a car, and in the first place, when did I ever bring up buying a new or used car " DUDE "?
@Enigmaculate
@Enigmaculate Ай бұрын
@@nsbioy And before you say anything else, I already said what I had to say more than a month ago, I'm not interested in getting into a heated discussion about this. We'll just have to agree to disagree from this point. It's nothing personal, I can just tell that you took offense to me calling you " dude " apparently in my second comment when I asked you " _Are you ok dude?_ ". It was just a general question, I wasn't questioning your cognitive sufficiency or anything, it was simply just a succinct way of asking, " _Did you not thoroughly read what I had posted more than a month ago, did you just impatiently gloss over critical details I had pointed out?_ ". THAT'S what I was asking, nothing more, nothing less. Oh, and one more thing, comparing buying a washing machine to a car whether it's/they're new or used is a night and day comparison. Anyway, this conversation is over. PEACE✌.
