What was so great about this game? The story sucked, it was woke as fuck, MJ was awful, no Eddie Brock, and a whole lot more! I've seen videos that point out just how woke this game is. Like how insomniac removed police from crimes because liberals hate cops. And during the fight with MJ, Peter apologizes for shit he had no control over because of the alien infecting his brain! Also I was so pissed that they killed the best sinister six characters! I feel like Scorpion should have been harder to kill, he was literally made to kill spider-man! It was already the case with the first, sadly. Peter was becoming an idiot when the story needed (Spider-Sense is gone also whenever the writers felt like it) and he always had to be helped ultimately (helped by Otto, helped by MJ, helped by Miles, leading to this hilarious scene where Peter, a man with Spider-Strenght is dragged by Miles and MJ who looks like her own clothes is too much to bear for her. Nothing Pete does is from his own work), they just turn it up to 15 and now everybody is seeing it.

I can understand they're doing their own take on symbiotes (with Venom being fireproof and all) but yeah I agree that they should've specified details to clear up misunderstandings or plot holes. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Spidey and Insomniac fan and I enjoyed the story but it just felt rushed; as well as lacking in effort compared to the first game.

I haven't played the game but could tell the story was mediocre from the cutscenes. Is my opinion valid? Because I was told I cannot say anything negative about the Arkham game portrayals of characters without playing (I did play them and my opinion didn't change) but playing the game doesn't make a character all of a sudden a good portrayal. Penguin and mad hatter in particular. Neither are bad at all, just not what I prefer and most of the villains seem 2 dimensional evil.

⁠We don’t see Kraven himself actually do much. He basically just sits around while his minions do all the actual hunting and capturing where he then kills the supervillains in a remote location of his choosing after studying them. Imagine how much cooler it would’ve been if Kraven purely just broke the villains out of prison and let them out into the streets of New York, basically making New York the jungle/hunting ground that him and his hunters then use to search for the villains over time and kill them with it being up to Peter and Miles to try to get to them first before Kraven does with there being some successes and some failures as we see Kraven himself actually hunt these villains down in New York with maybe a mission or two involving a chase where you and Kraven are chasing after a villain (like Vulture, or Electro, or Shocker) with one of you trying to get to him first as Kraven also tries to slow you down with enemies and destroying buildings and stuff. It basically allows Kraven to be much more involved than just showing up once in a while to do something, leave, then show up again later to do another thing or fight someone

I can understand the need for minions because you can't just be doing bossfights the whole time (even then the bossfight sequences were so close to each other near the end it felt like that's what you WERE doing). Instead, imagine if we got a battle sequence where we keep switching between the Spider-Men and switching between fighting Kraven and his minions; what's more is they could've also added Kraven and the other Spidey fighting in the background or around you while you fight the minions as Miles or something, then when there's no more minions you both fight Kraven together.

In my opinion, Shattered Dimensions did the whole concept of Kraven having an army better than this game did as in that game, his followers went full authentic hunters in terms of design and style but SM2 has them talk like they’re hunters and all about being “strong” and “in-tune with nature” and “instincts” and stuff like they’re hunters and stuff but then they turn around and heavily rely on advanced technology like robot birds and dogs, cloaking tech for bases, air ships, etc. it’s like they say and talk like they’re those old school hunters that follow peoples scents and study the area and all that, but then turn around and use tracking software to do all the work for them. That plus their designs just aren’t as cool as the Shattered Dimensions ones.

The symbiote invasion should’ve been saved for the carnage dlc or whatever they decide to do with carnage in the future. Venom should’ve been a more street level situation. Harry could’ve gone around just wrecking the city by taking out what was left of the Hunters and that naturally drags him and Peter into direct conflict. The symbiote could then start influencing Harry to go after MJ and Miles to hurt Peter.

I think the push to be more 'cinematic' is why they keep focusing on non-spiderman stuff. In comics, side characters plotlines are given small cuts in between the action and their scenes are usually focused around the protagonist's perspective. In a game, cutscenes of side characters works but that translates poorly in gameplay since you have to actively put on the brakes and force the player to play the sections. Instead of making more content focused on the stars of the game, they tried to cram the others in to flesh out the story. Almost every non hero section could just be a cutscene and deliver the same feeling.

@Mr_Blueberry Someone in the comments mentioned the idea of fighting each member of the sinister six that Kraven released. Imagine two spiders running around trying to get to the villains before Kraven along with the plotline. Peter stressing this much helps his reliance on the suit and Miles starts to really see the strain of trying to balance a life while trying to save the city. Maybe Peter is the one to eventually go full venom and Miles battles the real ugly side of being spiderman and seeing the road the mask can lead him to. Lots of emotional story to squeeze out there with the climax of Kraven, Venom, Peter versus Miles just from that.

Not sure why people are so mad about a different opinion, it’s refreshing to see how others perceive the game. I think saying it sucks is a bit harsh though but I definitely think a lot of aspect’s just felt like there wasn’t enough time put into them. I never felt like Peter wearing the suit got enough development to warrant making the player feel like Peter needs to remove it. Hell, Peter himself doesn’t even make the realization it was more Miles that ends up helping him get the suit off. I really feel like Peter should have chose to do that himself, maybe they could have had him hurt Miles and realize the suit is doing more harm than good.

@@King_QM23Insomniacs Spider-Man isn’t the first to tackle the concept of the black suit being akin to substance abuse. So many Spider-Man stories address the high Peter gets from having the suit and how powerful and good it feels but they also handled him getting rid of it better because Peter sees the actual harm he causes and how much the suit has changed him for the worst that he realizes that it needs to stop even if it means he loses the power. Here, it takes Miles beating the crap out of him and telling him how bad it is (despite having little interaction with the symbiote) to make Peter take it off. At least Spider-Man 3, for as flawed and meme able as it was, did something like have Peter hit MJ to make him realize how horrible he has become to help snap him out of the black suits influence because he realizes that he just hit the woman he loves because of its influence.

What's crazy is that this game has had TWO major (allegedly) updates, but the game is still so fucking buggy. Even after the updates, i got stuck inside a building, a Hunter vehicle got stuck in a tree, I was going to crime areas only for nothing to be there, and a couple symbiotes got trapped inside of a bus. How tf do you have a game that has been out for several months and has had 2 big updates, yet you DON'T patch these simple glitches?

Honestly I expected a bit more too, like why are car chases still quick time? It's been like that for years, even before this game, time to reinvent. I want to stop the car my way, as Spiderman, I want to web the tires, or send out a giant web net down the block and hope they don't turn, jump in front of it and pound the hood ...so many things. The we swinging still needs more improvement, although 0 assist was a decent direction. Stealth is still crap and Spiderman shines at that as well as direct combat (they actually took some cool gadgets away that made stealth a little more interactive) they at least made the AI a little smarter, not quite Arkham (as I hoped) but better. Overall a little more attention to detail and freedom would have been nice

They should have kept Parker and Miles separate for the most part, let the cross over on a mission or two but other than that let them carry their own game. That way you don't have to worry about so many plot threads and characters that it gets bogged down like this.

My first playthrough of Jedi Survivor took me 40 HOURS and that games has no padding, no walking sections and is just pure gameplay with skippable cutscenes. What bothers me even more is that Spiderman might beat it for best action adventure game despite being inferior in every single way. Jedi Survivor has a really good mini games where you use enemy AI in a chess board like game, and it is OPTIONAL. That is a brutal score, it is a solid 7/10.

They should have started with Kraven, transitioned into the venom arch but instead of end the game there used it to lead into the carnage arch and Peter require venom's help. Cassidy gets defeated only for carnage to escape and break him out of prison for the 3rd installment.

As somebody who adored the first game this game disappointed me but I still found enjoyment.They removed gadgets almost entirely which was one of my favorite parts about the first game and while the abilities were cool I feel like if they were to add a gadget wheel the possibilities in combat would have been endless. The story was not as compelling as the first game and seemed rushed . If they were to spend more time with venom and give Harry a proper arc I feel like the story would have prevailed the first game in terms of story as the first half with kraven was compelling enough. Overall game was around a 8.2/10 which is good but I feel like it could have been so much more.

Sad we lost the character database and the gadgets we made in Spider-Man 1. We only see the web grenade in QTEs for stopping car chases. Worst thing Peter did here was not answering phone calls and getting angrier. And funny how Peter hates “gun clubs” but has a girlfriend with a suped up gun that can take out symbiotes and seasoned hunters. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 did a better Symbiote story in 2 hours while Insomniac had around 17 hours and botched it.

From every problem about this game you can tell it was heavily rushed. After the success of the first game and spin off Sony being Sony definitely had not given them enough time to finish polishing this game. There’s literally the area of the Roxxon factory rhino bulldozes through In miles game that’s missing a door which allows you to go inside it the glitched building. Can’t believe the game went gold a month before release just for this to be the final product. I still like many aspects of the game but it feels very unfinished and not exactly what I expected to be. If the December update doesn’t include stuff like replayable missions, new game + and adding an option to use the black symbiote, and any dlc ,then this definitely doesn’t deserve goty nor any more of my time.

I have to 100% agree with you here. The game was disappointing. - You'd expect from the 5 year wait for this game to be almost better in every way possible, especially in the story. But this game's story just feels rushed and the pacing is all over the place. Peter's arc ended way too soon, not to mentioned he was hella nerfed and not only in gameplay (cough cough, pinned down by a fridge for a solid 2-3 mins), Venom barely had any character or personality, even his goals are kinda weak. Kraven was certainly the best part of this story but should've seen more of him instead of half of it being off screen. Also him having minions hunting for him kinda defeats the whole point of him being a hunter. And to top it all off none of the story elements in this game come even close to the emotional rollercoaster that was with the Doc Ock fight or Aunt May's death. They didn't even kill off Harry in this game which just makes Norman's desires to be a villain and want revenge kinda stupid and misunderstood. (They did save him from this black goo monstrosity) and the cherry on top being Silk teased. Why do we need 3 spiders especially when they couldn't handle 2 spideys in one story properly. Overall very disappointing story that should've had a lot lot more time to build up all its plot points. Especially when you have a Web of Shadows style invasion. Instead we got MJ missions and pointless things like ridin bikes being doubled down instead of using all that time to flush out the story more. Sorry for the long wall of texts. I hold the first game near and dear to my heart and loved its story and its representation so so much. And to see the story be way inferior despite Insomniac raising the bar so high for their storytelling really made me upset. Overall not very excited for the "final chapter". 7/10

In my opinion: Gameplay: 9/10 Story: 2/10 Gameplay was really good. I just want some more combos for combat. Following the talon drones was also a bit boring, as I think it should have been using web-swinging as well. Story was shit. Peter was SEVERELY nerfed in this game. I feel like the game focused on Miles too much, and it wanted to make him seem as strong, if not stronger than Peter. It was also too short. I feel like it didn't build up enough. Also, it is really stupid that Anti-Venom could not be Venom by himself. Spider-Man's entire thing was just him vs. overwhelming odds. He was killed by Kraven with no fight, was beaten by Miles even though he was powered up by the symbiote, and got clapped by Venom each time they met. Overall: 6.5/10

It's kind of strange because this game has so much going on but after the credits rolled I felt like I accomplished nothing. I am a huge Spidey fan and I do feel there is a masterpiece at the core of this game but there is so much fat and bs that needs to be trimmed for a more focused cohesive narrative. Venom was brilliant, the lizard chase was amazing, black suit and pissed off Peter was definitely fun but the game just felt like fast food and I really wanted a home cooked meal.

If it wasn't for Kraven I probably would have considered the best of the Insomniac Spiderman games so far. Tbh I don't think they should have done Kraven at all unless they completely rewrote him and made him an original version of the character like they did with Doc Ock. Doc Ock was an amazing character in 1 but Kraven feels like such a massive downgrade from him and the Sinister 6 in general. This feels like 2 games crammed into 1 instead of a single game.

Exactly Spending time on boring puzzles, giving MJ more abilities but somehow the gameplay doesn't drastically change from the previous game The Activision era may be hit or miss but you felt the difference when playing Ultimate Spider-Man right after Spider-Man 2 or Web of Shadows after Spider-Man 3 despite all being made by the same dev (Treyarch). Spider-Man games haven't really been overly innovative since Shattered Dimensions. Graphics have gotten better and gameplay is less janky but TASM era to Insomniac plays it safe with their gameplay

To anyone who says the combat is still good, its a major downgrade from the first. Too few abilities specific to each spiderman. I started on the hardest difficulty and enemies die so quick i can barely break into the 90s combo count before everyone is "knocked out". Its literally too hand holdy. The story is this awful mish mash of new ways to die, kravens last hunt, and some of donny cates' venom out of nowhere. I really thought this was going to be my favorite game this year and somehow it just wasnt. Peter was constantly trashed on. Miles is made to seem stronger than peter even after getting the symbiote. Harry coming in as flash thompson agent venom was dumb. Venom getting the god wings with no context was dumb. Not getting the cosmic suit as an unlockable was lame. Teasing green goblin and ock as the next villains after peter uncharacteristiaclly quits being spiderman is ludicrous If u like the game im happy for you but man unless theres ever a web of shadows remaster im done with spidey and ive loved the character sonce i was about 3. My first damn toy for christmas was a big spiderman with suction cups so he could stick to walls and windows. Any way i appreciate the video

I had to take a break because in one 3 hour session I ended up, becoming spider-cube, have miles’ model break apart in the music side mission, have Haileys model just straight up disappear except her hands and head, I fell through New York multiple times, and my game crashed. I recorded the whole thing and I may upload it someday

I played the first game a week after I came out, and even now I still like to boot up into new game plus and play it for the story, and swinging around Manhattan. Hell before I heard anything about this game I was looking to get a PS5 just for this then I play Miles Morales and my expectations dropped to neutral. Then the game came out and now I don’t want to play it. From how the handled Kraven and Venom. Then them killing off half of the Sinster Six and making Martin Lee good. Sandman beat the fanboy outta me. The story is awful, undercooked and underwhelming. How did they manage to double the map and have much less to do?? The things you can do are very tedious and boring. At this point I just want NG+ so I can use my favorite suits to fight all the bosses and use all the abilities. Especially Sandman and Lizard with Sam Raimi suit and Multiverse suit. I also wanna beat every game on the hardest difficulty because I always play on normal. Man.. Yes the story could have been a bit less rushed at the end with venom and i agree that Kraven was really well done and would love to see more of him but it was stated that this was his last hunt he said it himself that he was looking for someone that could show him a true challenge. The whole harry being venom kinda threw me off too at the beginning but i don’t think harry was every supposed to be the main venom for this Spiderman because the venom symbiote isn’t dead OsCorp has more of the symbiote kept away. I think they made harry venom so Norman has a reason to have a grudge against Spiderman and use the g serum to cure harry and become the green goblin to be the main or one of the main antagonists for the next game

It’s very possible that insomniac didn’t even design the costume, but somebody from Adidas. And then they had this collaboration so that Adidas could sell the product. This design was probably in the works for months, if not years.

I did the Yuri mission as Anti-Venom Peter and he didn't once think about using his Symbiote abilites to lift the train off him. Cletus was about to burn him alive and Peter would sit around to let it happen if Yuri didn't push the train off him with a truck.

One thing I don't understand, is why the symbioses still show up in crime fights even after you complete the game, and the symbiote was removed from the streets. That makes no sense to me.

this game was hella mid. it was fun for me, minus mini "games", but the story was meh. this game had some high points but very bad low points, enough for me to not give it a high rating (edit: the miles suit towards the end was an adidas ad)

Call me crazy but I think this game should’ve done the black suit arc, but found a way to give venom his own game. They tried doing wayyy too much in this game and if they couldn’t do venom justice in 5 hours, save him for later. Or just save the symbiote entirely for the third game and fuck with the Green Goblin this game.

Your review of it was great felt the same way while playing did you hear about how miles was gonna get the symbiote and they only used 10% of recorded tony Todd lines. I fear what insomniac will do to the wolverine game, if it’s just a walking movie simulator with occasional fights 🤢 hopefully will be on same level as x men origins wolverine game

What is funny. Is that I'm working on my own Story of this Spider-Man 2 Game. If you guys didn't notice it I found a pacing issue after Venom Kills Kraven. It gives you two feelings. One the game is done. Or two the Game is going to continue for a bit longer. Aka 1 hour or less. But it continues on for longer than that. For mine I basically give Peter more time in the Symbiote suit, I give Miles actual interesting things, and I give Peter choices. I show him how the Symbiote suit does make things better. But do the positives outweigh the negatives? That would be the question that needs a answer. Another thing that would have been cool for Spider-Man 2 Give the player a Choice. Give them the choice to either join Venom or not. If you join Venom the game continues until you have taken over all of Manhattan and prepare to take the world. In the other choice the game continues as what it will.

I fully expect Sony and PS fanboys to come raid the comment section. Good review overall. I'd also give this game a 5/10. That being said, this is a game I understand why some people would love - it's not so bad that it is impossible to see any worth in. I agree with your critique on the combat/ gameplay. For me, the two other things that really dragged this game down were the MJ sections and some very questionable narrative choices. Imo, the MJ sections were purely padding and completely necessary. I've seen so many people SPRINT around the map, tasing goons in the face thus essentially executing a 1-hit-takedown; it's quite brainless. It's crazy how you can sprint across long distances, the AI won't detect you and even if you are detected - the timing window to execute a takedown is just too big. I've seen someone take down two enemies as MJ in one go despite them having been "discovered". The AI also stops pursuing you very quickly - they don't bother to search for you for even 15 seconds after losing sight. Not only is this lazy and boring gameplay, it also undermines Peter and Miles in the sense that our two Spider-Men have to apparently execute a full combo on these goons to take them out whereas MJ can pretty much knock them out in 1 hit. It really messes with the power-scaling. Not to mention, this is such a confounding choice from a gameplay perspective - most people complained about these MJ sections and instead of removing them and focusing on further refining/expanding the Spider-Man combat, they doubled down on the MJ sections. From a narrative perspective, I felt like Venom and Pete's symbiotic arc was incredibly rushed. Pete goes 0 to 100 - in terms of the Symbiotic influence on his mind, turning into "Bully Lowenthal" in a blink of an eye (a slight exaggeration but you get what I mean). Furthermore, what irked me was the dynamic between Miles and Peter. I felt that Peter took way too many L's in this game and Miles just kept on winning - and before some fanboy misconstrues and manipulates my words, allow me to explain. Going into this game, my main concern was how Insomniac would handle the mentor-mentee dynamic. I'm not mad that Peter can't catch a break through the game, the problem is when you see all this in context of Miles' actions throughout this game. To me, it implies that Miles is just a better Spider-Man. Miles "saves" Black Cat, overcomes his trauma/need for revenge, beats and reforms Martin Li, "saves" Peter, manages to "beat" symbiote-suit Peter and "talk-no-jutsus" him into removing the suit, puts up a hell of a fight against Venom, saves Harry and gets his girl. Peter's accomplishments and victories throughout the main story feel so much more sparse and pathetic. Bro loses his job first day as a teacher, gets stabbed by Kraven without even putting a fight, goes through his "symbiote-suit arc" where he turns into a dickhead, gets saved by Miles and Li to get the Anti-Venom suit and destroys the symbiote. None of these things are "bad" per se, but when you compare them to all that Miles' accomplishes in this game, Peter is the one who looks like he's a liability and a sidekick. I would have been able to brush all this aside but the final nail in the coffin was was Peter quite literally saying to Miles that why would the city need him when it has Miles. There was no significant moment in the game that highlighted the mentor-mentee relationship between the two - if you didn't know anything about Peter or Miles - you'd swear that Peter is just the older version of Miles, but worse. I'm not saying this is the only way of looking at this, I know fans of this game will come up with a million explanations to justify this weird dynamic. between the two but it really rubbed me the wrong way. So yeah, I'd also give this a 5/10 - decently fun, but brought down by various flaws that are too big for me to ignore and bring down my enjoyment. Also speaking of review scores, it's crazy how we live in a time where 8/10 and 9/10s have become like the standard. It's like the distribution curve of scores has shifted so far to the right that people instantly assume 5/10 means crap.

I feel like your final paragraph before ur rating is the exact reason why critics and fans will say a 5/10 means crap. Fans and critics alike probably have already justified the weird dynamics you spoke upon. I can sort of agree with the MJ missions where shes one tapping everyone. but miles and peter both one tap in stealth as well, MJ also goes down in one hit. they probably designed that section like that to make it easier and more balanced. As I said justifiying the weird dynamic would probably bump the score back up to at least a 7. Insomiac has confirmed themselves that Miles is the new main Spider-Man, which ik thats probably not great news for you, but it also explains why the duo was treated as such. I will say they could've strecthed this games story a bit more, if they did we probably wouldn't be here having this disscussion.

They made city twice big, but all you do is fight same 4 factions, in main story, side missions and random crimes and 5th one with symbiotes. So you get multiple upgrades and skills till the end. But fighting same enemies again and again. Imagine if souls games had only 4-5 factions of enemies between the boss fights 💀

Well, honestly, it would probably be a 6 out of a 10 if it wasn’t such a buggy mess. I don’t think the story was well paced, and genuinely didn’t enjoy most of the side activities. The crimes we weren’t unique in the Symbiot storyline was unoriginal and poorly done. I’m glad you enjoyed the game I really am but I have played some marvelous games this year.
