Why "Sponge On The Run" SUCKS

Today we're watching the newest SpongeBob Movie, Sponge on the Run! We're huge SpongeBob fans around here, but unfortunately this Paramount Plus original doesn't seem to have the same charm or humor of the first two movies. Despite it's good animation and decent plot lifted from "Where's Gary?", some don't see the movie as anything more than a glorified ad for the spinoff show "Camp Coral". Also Keanu Reeves is in this movie. Doesn't make it good though.

"the power of friendship" trope only works when your characters have a strong, good friendship and are good to each other. but like, most of the characters in Spongebob are awful to each other, that's like, the WHOLE THING. Mr. Krabs sold Spongebob's soul for a single dollar, Squidward is a cynical narcissist, Spongebob and Patrick may be close with each other but they still hurt each other and others with their naivety and ignorance all the time. that's why it feels like it'd be something a regular Spongebob episode would parody, because you just can't have the power of friendship with characters that treat each other like this.

This entire film reeks of "how do you do fellow kids" energy. The references to Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg, Take On Me and Skype/FaceTime reek of corporate executives trying to pander to the youth. The character writing is off at points; Patrick doesn't talk like himself at all and the ending is just so overly sappy that it's unbelievable that it made its way into a SpongeBob movie.

it's an interesting phenomenon how they made this movie pretty much right after Stephen Hillenburg died, and they not only reused a bunch of already used tropes from both the spongebob series and the episodes, but they actually just completely forgot so many details that the series already filled in, such as how spongebob and sandy met they literally met in season 1 episode 1, Tea at the Treedome, that's already established, and yet they made an entire series about something that's just blatantly wrong, this movie and the spinoff based off of it are both literally rooted in ignorance

(It's not like the show hasn't depicted hotels before, or buildings that fall outside the "metal cylinders and cubes" template. There's a diner made out of a sunken ship, and a grocery store that looks like a big barrel!) And if it doesn't matter, get rid of the "hotel" sign and just let us assume it's a normal generic building.
