In this Barndominium Show episode Erik discusses the reason foam insulation is more efficient in a Barndominium than in a conventional home. Erik also shows how we use fiberglass insulation in our Barndo's.
Enjoy.

There only one chance to build it right the first time. Love the interior wall sound insulation, cheap to do but huge difference if someone snoring or other. Love the exposed duct work, if it leaks or isn't insulated, who gives a cheet! Love it only being 'nice' under porches, leave the rest metal or gtfo of barndominium land. Love insulating the shop too, do it once and and enjoy the thermal attenuation forever.

Loved your video and am learning a lot doing my research on this but it is a real shame that so many people feel it necessary to be so rude and disrespectful of others. It takes a lot of the joy out of YT and social media in general. Folks should be more civil about their opinions. I guess the anonymity emboldens people to act that way and seems to be the way of the coward as I see it. Thank you sir for your time and efforts.

I have grown to really like and appreciate you and I look forward to seeing your fantastic videos. I learn so much each time I listen to you and the insulation is perfect👌🏾and I had no idea that the everything couldn't be sprayed with insulation and the wood couldn't exceed a certain size. Your videos are like a relaxing, refreshing mini classroom and refuge. Sometimes you help bring a smile to my face and joy to my heart too. You should consider having a Meet & Greet in 2020, at one of your barndominums with wonderful food and such, that would be great! Do you teach/hire new people to help you with building?

I know this was a year ago, but the hurricanes in Louisiana in 2020 left several barns standing where houses had been wiped out. They weren’t barndos but same concept. Water (rushing) seemed to cause the most issue and probably some issues with metal sheets needing to be replaced here and there, but that’s much cheaper than replacing the entire home after a bad storm.

A question regarding insurance. When I insured my barndo after it was built they asked me about the construction of the inner walls. My entire outside is metal but when I told them it was conventional wood framing on the inner walls I saw the agent raise an eyebrow. Like I told them you would have to really have to try to set this thing on fire from the outside unless an automobile exploded or something like that but a fire inside might put you in the same boat as a conventional structure. I think I get some kind of break on the insurance but I'm not sure because of the fire rating. I see you use 5/8 sheet rock and that would be a good deterrent in case of a flash fire outside the walls but what would the scenario be if the foam ever got started? I have worked on commercial fishing vessels that are insulated with close cell foam in the freezer compartments and when we do welding have to be very careful around it. It's pretty hard to extinguish and I hate to say a couple of boats almost burned completely out from fires that got out of control. I'm not trying to start anything as I have a smaller building sprayed with foam but I sometimes worry about a fire more so with mine because my wall coverings are flammable. No sheet rock in it. Every home should have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and utility room as well as smoke detectors. Again, I'm not trying to start anything and maybe you can elaborate on this.

Erik, that is not smart in this climate zone. The wrap would be counterproductive, since you would take the exterior out of the envelope. Moisture would gather between the wrap and the r-panel.

@kirksway1
@kirksway1 5 жыл бұрын
Barndo' is sided with sheet metal. Much easier to replace than residential siding when you hit it with your tractor or back into it with your combine. Steel doesn't melt when you get your BB-q grill close to it like vinyl siding does. steel goes up so much faster thus saving time on the job site. steel doesn't easily blow off in the wind.

Secondly, I have a client here in Oklahoma and they only want to use closed cell on their shop home. What is your take on just using closed cell foam spray insulation on the entire building? There seems to be a mixed consensus between builders and insulators. Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences. Thanks! Bryan.

Closed cell is fine, we use it on exposed areas. It’s more expensive but works very well. The R-Value is higher but it won’t sound insulate as well as open cell because it’s sprayed thinner.

my question is if you are using spray foam on the walls why would you put the zip system in. if that is closed cell foam which i believe it to be then the zip is a waste you're better off using advantech plywood for a lot less.

We are using open cell. Why does the foam which is inside make a difference on what is done on the outside?
