He knew EXACTLY what the statue was. I saw a clip of him, before they recorded him doing that to the statue. You can hear in his stream say stuff like "The Japanese hate this statue!" and proceeded to explain why. That whole "I had no idea the significance of this statue and the harm I caused" is total rubbish and patently false.

This is awful behavior. I get why countries don't like American tourists. People like this makes us all look bad. Knowing what comfort women went through his actions were so disrespectful towards women who had already been severely disrespected and hurt in life. And then the disrespect towards women in general is just gross. I dont understand people who find entertainment in this.

It's not just American tourists, it's pretty much everyone from Western countries. I've seen people disrespect simple things like not sitting in reserved seating on the subway. The saddest thing is that Korea/Asian countries allow people to disrespect their countries. I will be extremely surprised if Korea does anything to punish JS. Non-Koreans have gotten away with far worse behavior without ever having to pay the price.

I really want to experience Japan, but because of selfsentered fools like him, Logan Paul, the people who wouldn't respect the gaisha, the girl who used a tori gate as a exercise pull up bar, the guy who climed onto someone's balcony and, allegely, yelled "robbery" (he claimed he was yelling "fire, get out") , and the guy who climed to the "roof" of a convinience store sign, I subconsiousely worry that I'll now be automatically seen as a ignorant tourist when I eventually do visit.

@@Santiago-in1xf but surely it's just easy to be respectful and careful isn't it? Like nobody needs to give warnings to tourists that they shouldn't disrespect statues especially with obscene acts! Like who does that anyway? I do remember a couple times in another country I did a couple things that seemed to cause a reaction from the locals: one time I stood on a park bench and an old lady waved her stick and shouted ...so I got down. Another time it seemed like I'd wandered into a government facility area I wasn't supposed to be in, and I could tell by the looks from people so I left immediately. It's not that hard, and if you make an honest or stupid mistake, just back off and apologise if you can. On the contrary it must be so very hard to deliberately go out of the way looking for new ways to taunt people and disrespect their country, when normal misunderstandings just aren't offensive enough.

I’ve seen other KZbinrs talking about Somali and it seems like the reason he chose to do this in Asian countries like Japan and Korea is because he perceives people there to be more docile and passive. I’ve been traveling enough around Asia myself, including Japan and Korea, to know that most people there are very polite and kind, but these characteristics should never be mistaken for being docile. If you break the laws the consequences can be severe. Really hope Korea won’t let him get away with his disrespectful behaviors. Give him a well deserved jail sentence!

I've seen videos of him say that he doesn't care about anything but himself. He crossed a line with Korean people by messing with those Comfort Women Statues. That's a highly charged issue linked with deep shame and heartache in the Korean psyche. He apologized and claimed he was ignorant of their significance, but it's not sincere; he did the same thing in Japan and then mocked Japan as soon as he left. Guaranteed, he'll do the same thing as soon as he leaves the country. On a separate point, it's bizarre to me that people find this in any way entertaining. Is this the world we're living in now? Two things I see here: 1. The US sense of entitlement, especially by men, will be at an all time high for the next four years due to who is President, so I could see more of this happening if it’s not taken seriously in other countries 2. I don’t think much of South Korean law as it is today when it comes to protecting people in general. It’s 2024 and there are no discrimination laws correct? Laws protecting women? So not surprised when this happens and little is done about it. Drug sentences seem to be the only area where people serve time. Why is that?

He knew what the statue is. Before that clip of him desecrating the comfort woman statue, he was trying to find something exactly like that, but he found ones that were fenced, so he couldn't do what he wanted to do, so he intentionally found one that was not protected.

Reminds me of an episode of The Orville. A member of the ship’s crew visiting another planet disrespects a local national monument in an eerily similar situation. He becomes the country’s most hatred person, a country where popular opinion is the law, and he nearly gets sentenced to a lobotomy. His crew mates manage to get him out of it, but the moral is the same. When you find yourself in a strange land, try to show some respect for the local culture, and never disrespect any statues or national monuments. This guy doesn’t have a starship to bail him out and needs to feel the force of the law and realize that his actions have consequences.

In Orville I think the guy had no idea he was doing anything consequential and his actions were his natural response to things and not intentionally trying to hurt people’s feelings. So very different from Johnny. I hope S Korea throws Johnny in jail, at least foe 3 years. Intentional emotional torture is a crime in most countries. It’s difficult to prove in court before, but now that this yahoo is making a business out of it, Korean government should make a new case out of it. Else this kind of behavior won’t stop.

He deliberately targeted those memorials of painful memories. He needs consequences. But could you, one day, explain the culture of 'apologize' that permeates the news after a scandal by politicians, idols, even in KDramas? And it seems like there's a format for an apology to be acceptable? Is that really enough? As a non-Korean, maybe I'm not understanding what 'apology' actually means in the Korean context.

I didn't know there was no public order offence in S. Korea?! This summer, here in Ireland, a bunch of young men and a few women were chraged with public order offences for causing trouble at a parade in Cork. One of them was literally charged for using threatening and abusive language against citizens. They did have to appear in court and usually the sentence is a fine or public service. With S. Korea having so many rules on behaviour you'd think they would have a public order act.

Johnny S. must be stopped. He’s incredibly disrespectful. His family came to America got their citizenship for him to have a better life. Somali father and an Ethiopian mother raised him & his siblings with traditional values. Only to return the favor by being ungrateful. I can see why he’s not on speaking terms with his family. They don’t play that mess. He is well known many places in the world, including America & hated as a result. The moments he stepped foot in Korea people knew who he was, and they were not playing with his BS. No matter where you going in the world, respect the law. One of his biggest role models is Logan Paul so I’m not surprised he pulled this stunt. Just reminds me of the suicide Forest incident to this day. Logan can’t go to Japan as a result. For anyone who doesn’t know who Logan Paul is, he’s a foreigner who also traveled around the world and used to pull pranks/ disrespectful stunts. However, he stopped after he received massive backlash over its stunt pulled in Japan.

I do not understand the mindset of people like this, who engage in blatantly Anti-Social Behaviour (or any form of anti-social behaviour, really). While each individual act may not, technically, be illegal, they are most definitely morally reprehensible; and, when taken together, form a pattern of behaviour that should never be allowed - let alone encouraged (what the heck are his viewers/followers thinking?). The behaviour towards woman is clearly sexual harassment - a charge surely easier to prosecute, because he kindly provided his own video evidence (dumbass). I hope South Korea throw the book at him. And it would be good if other countries he has done this sort of thing at, revisit some of his videos, and find something to press charges on. I do not know Korean laws, but in many countries he could be charged with Public Nuisance. while this usually just carries a fine, being convicted of a crime could restrict his ability to enter that country, and others as well. The blatant disrespect he showed to the statues of the Comfort Woman, and to society - no, to Humanity - as a whole, is mindboggling. It just makes me despair for the path that humanity is taking. Though I am glad to see so much condemnation of his actions.

Why our American constitution is the problem? As an American, I can affirm that the U.S. Constitution is fundamental to understanding why Americans behave in certain ways, both domestically and abroad. For instance, standing outside a restaurant and pointing a camera at the establishment and the patrons who come and go is protected as a constitutional right. When restaurant managers report such actions to the police, they are often informed that there is no legal recourse. This holds true for public areas, including police stations, courthouses, and other public venues. This is where issues arise. While it is entirely legal to film in public spaces, the general public often reacts with anger and frustration towards those who exercise this right. Many feel that their privacy is being invaded. In America, societal behavior is predominantly governed by laws and constitutional rights rather than social norms, traditions, or etiquettes. In contrast, in regions such as Korea and the Arab world, where I originally come from, norms and traditions form the core of societal structure. For example, a man-let’s say “Johnny the Ethiopian, not the Somali”-would never dare to approach women on the streets of Amman or Kuwait with inappropriate remarks without facing severe consequences. One might view such reactions as harsh or even savage, but these practices have preserved the social fabric for thousands of years. Those who act disrespectfully often face immediate repercussions. If such behavior reaches the courts and witnesses testify, the offender is likely to face imprisonment. Recently, Italy has implemented new regulations specifically targeting American tourists. The reason? Americans often disregard local customs and etiquettes, and Italians have grown tired of it. The situation is similar in France. Americans are perceived as brash and self-entitled, with a sense of superiority that has become a persistent issue for many countries. When individuals like Ramsey Khalid Ismael, known as Johnny Somali, visit countries such as Japan or Korea, where societal norms and customs are integral to daily life, they stand out-and not in a positive way. I agree with the KZbinr who mentioned that Koreans are unsure of how to respond to actions that, while not illegal, violate their cultural customs and traditions. This is why some Korean streamers reacted the way they did. While Koreans may be uncomfortable seeing their fellow citizens take matters into their own hands, there is little sympathy for the “Johnnys” of the world who travel vast distances only to disrupt and destabilize local life.

I’m not sure that little Ramsey is a narcissist…. My reason for that is that narcissists are very concerned with their public image. They build a false facade for themselves, often getting people to believe that they are someone to look up to, and admire. In fact, unless you have a working knowledge of narcissism, you usually won’t recognize that someone is a narcissist unless you have dealt with narcissistic abuse from them. Narcissists don’t like for people to think poorly of them. My father is narcissistic, and so is my ex husband.

People like that are incredibly disappointing. How can someone travel to another country and take advantage of their hospitality? A ten-year prison sentence should teach him a lesson about respecting other people's space. However, as you mentioned, he will probably plead that he wasn't taking his medication, which led to his behaviour. Thankfully, they found some incriminating evidence. While violence is not encouraged, protecting your personal space is a fundamental human right.
