Interdisciplinary Studies is close to my heart, and as someone who makes hiring decisions, will always pique my interest on someone's resume. While my major was a pre-designed one (BS Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies/minor in Psychology), it's an interdisciplinary field by nature, and I tell people that when I got that degree in that field, I wasn't just studying WGSS in the same way one might study math or literature - I was studying sociology, political science, history, economics, geography, art, communications, and philosophy. An interdisciplinary major, whether self-designed or pre-designed, allows you to dip your toe into countless aspects of your chosen field and gain a holistic, global picture of it. The more angles you understand an issue from, the more effective a problem solver you're going to be in working with that issue.

One of mine majored in anthropology with a business minor. It was invaluable for opening up the mind and prodding the intellect. This Unit can write well. They can analyze, thinking critically and compare. At the same time, numbers and quantitative analysis are also part of a strong skill set.

I did an Interdisciplinary studies degree with economics and environmental science in hopes to work in water economics, a field that hardly even exists still. I loved my major, but the hardest part was describing it employers and family there was also Very little help from the university because its all very subjective to your designed program. Learner beware: it is the Linux OS of degree programs

You WILL occasionally find yourself stuck in classes you find dull or irrelevant or poorly taught. Stick with it anyway! In college you suddenly have a lot more control over your life than you had in high school. With that control comes a wonderful sense of freedom, but that includes the freedom to screw up. I struggled and continue to struggle with the self-discipline to do well in college. Stick with it anyway!

I'm gonna be graduating from Ubalt soon with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, and to give a quick blurb on what it's like, this video was pretty apt. Following my switch from the game design program-a field that's multifaceted in itself- to IDIS, I was required by the program to combine three subjects to come up with my degree path. I took on game design, psych, and history, creating a major good for game studies, teaching, and narrative design. I like to think of myself as a "red mage" in my studies; I definitely don't have the same advanced knowledge as someone who only studied one of those disciplines, but at the same time, I do possess the skills necessary to effectively communicate ideas and knowledge from one area to another to create new research material. For example, I wound up doing two capstones by choice: my IDIS capstone discussing videogame preservation methodologies, and my history capstone, where I researched how indigenous communities, particularly Indigenous Americans and the Ainu, have used modern media like movies and games in order to market and preserve their culture on their own terms. It's a challenging program, as it required me to explain to my history professors, for example, some video game concepts, terminology, and reasons why designers do what they do in game narratives, but it's also fun when I show them that their knowledge is just as valuable as mine, like when I was able to connect the history of JRPGS with my professor's knowledge on Japan's greater history of how they marketed Japanese electronics and entertainment following the electronics boom. The key with IDIS, I would say, is just picking related concentrations and learning to effectively communicate to both recruiters and professors what you're studying and how it's going to be useful to people both in and out your circle.

All my degrees are in Interdisciplinary Studies, BS, MEd, and EdD. My goal was teaching in small and isolated post-secondary situations. I've never had a problem getting jobs in wonderful locations.My advice, find someone working or managing people in the field(s) you are interested in. Those times I didn't duck quick enough and found myself in an administrative role; I looked for flexibility and an itch to learn new stuff and a willingness to try new things.

I’m so happy I went to a school that had a robust interdisciplinary program! I graduated with a BCSA (Bachelor of Computer Science and Art) from the BXA (Bachelor of X and Art) program at Carnegie Mellon. I definitely recommend to younger folks that if you have an opportunity to, consider a school with a program like this! I started school as an art major with an interest in computer animation, and eventually went on to learn how to build creative tools for artists and transition into the interdisciplinary track. As Hank says, it’s really important to learn how to describe your major to others, and especially the types of work you do, but when you get it down it can really help you specialize! Best of luck to everyone looking into these degrees.

We sort of had this at my college but not exactly. If you knew what you generally liked but not the specific field you could of gotten a General Social Science, General Physical Science, or General Environmental Science. These worked the same way as described here but you had to stick within those groups. This was also useful for people who wanted to double major but maybe didn't want the work load of a double major.

I did Interdisciplinary in order to study Neurobiology, it was a combination of Psychology, Biology, and other relevant sciences since at the time my Uni didn't offer a neuro major. There was a pre-made track though which made applying for the major much easier!

I did ID at Pace in NYC! I combined accounting with history to be able to study forensic historical accounting. Post 1600 we can actually tell a shit ton about the UK and colonialism in general just by looking at parliamentary spending over a set period of time, and applying modern forensic accounting techniques can shed historical light in all kinds of cool ways. It's fascinating!

THIS is definitely one of my favorite episodes and majors - looks like my interests are indeed about exploring questions with tools from specific disciplines. I think with disciplines rather than in them, if that makes sense. That's why this episode resonated so much with my autodidactic studies. Thank you for making this episode, and for picking polymath Hank as the host-just the right host for this topic. Most liberal arts degrees and undergraduate programs in the US do let you sample different classes before you declare a major, and let you combine that major with a minor or two. And in most cases, your major and minor can be in different fields so long as you're able to handle it. Then there's actually interdisciplinary degrees, where the curriculum itself requires you to study a variety of subjects. Master's degrees in public policy, and undergrad/postgrad majors in development studies, environmental studies, cognitive science, gender studies, even many MBAs these days, are good examples. My impression of Masters in Public Policy is that it's quickly gaining as much traction as the MBA: as more corporations acknowledge their social responsibility, and as governments and the social sector work to solve multiple crises, professionals trained in management AND social sciences AND ethics are in great demand. Finally, there's a difference between being a polymath studying for a degree, and studying for a polymath degree. I know of many, many people with one specialisation, but knowledge and skills that span multiple fields, due to their learning in and outside school. Plus, even a single-discipline like psychology or biology, if you dig deep enough, will show you that you need to understand many other disciplines in order to make sense of your own! In fact, many interdisciplinary areas and degrees emerged out of such realisations.

This degree is a life saver!!! I’m so glad I ran into this! First! My major was biology then to biochem but I realized QUICKLY after having nightmares about orbitals that O. Chem 1/2 is NOT for me 😅 but I love science. I love chemistry. Ehhh to physics. But! This degree let me do all of it! I moved colleges and went from a sophomore to a senior because I had taking so many biology’s and health courses. Only 1-2 years to go!!! ❤ prayers y’all prayers. I have genetics this semester 😂

Hey, this is my degree program! I have more than an entire BA/BS worth of credits through accredited courses the Air Force put me through, but no degree program attached to me/my specialty beyond an AAS... and I have two AAS and an AA in unrelated fields. Well, I finally applied to a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies and entered as a senior because I have to do at least 25% of the degree from the awarding university. Well, that leaves me with an entire unused AA of credits, and those credits will just keep building onto absolutely no degree, but at least I will get this Interdisciplinary Studies BS, and that will get me into the Master's I'm actually interested in.

I have been watching ALOT of talks on semiotics and synchronicity, there's a small hand full of people who consider the two topics "pandisciplinary". you can't study synchronicity in school. semiotics is like a summary of science and semioticians seem to be an athority on potentially any topic. My suspicion is that having semiotics will be a major help in an interdisciplinary study by both giving you the tools to argue for your position and it should make it much easier to transition to something you didn't plan for.

I'm going to major in Journalism but it turns out the department asks that you do A auxiliary discipline or a second major. I was thinking of English with Single Subject Teaching Credential, then I move to Liberal Studies. But I just found out about Interdisciplinary Studies, and I'm in love with it. It seems to real to be true😂. So I chose Interdisciplinary Studies with my emphasis to be a Therapist/Mental Health Counselor. I'm going to take for my disciplines, Anthropology, Psychology and Counseling.

So how would this be any different than majoring in something and getting a minor in something else? Ex. Music Entrepreneurship sounds like getting a Major in Business and minor in music or vice versa. So how would the Interdisciplinary degree help? The Major/Minor combo is more recognizable and easier to explain to employers.

Hi, barely anyone else in the world follows the minor / major system so not really. Here in the UK, you do the equivalent of minors before university then one major degree. In France and Germany, I don't think they even do minors but instead have pathways. You specialise into your career area from the age of 14/15.

Also, this allows you to equally share your time. And access courses only available when you take the subject as a major.

The short answer is, it depends on your school! Majoring in business and minoring in music could be a great option, but depending on how your school structures interdisciplinary studies majors, an IDS major could give you more control over what classes you take or how you balance them between departments. For instance, with a major in business and a minor in music, you'd take a lot of business classes and just a few music classes. But with an IDS major, you might be able to split the classes closer to 50-50 if you are able to design your degree plan, or this might be how a pre-structured IDS major is designed as well. If your degree includes a final project or thesis, you might also have more flexibility on what topics you cover. And lastly, IDS major can also be a good option if you want to combine /more/ than 2 concentrations (if it's available at your school). It never hurts to research your options and talk with an academic advisor at your school to compare different requirements!
