Tila hated eating veggies and fruit. Child would throw the worst tantums over getting a bowl of it. Like flipping over water dishes, throwing her log about. Picking up the bowl and shaking it until all the fruit fell out. Following that up with standing tall, stomping around the cage and huffing.... I love my savanna monitor and he loves me. Savannah motors are great and they can be really nice just need to spend a lot of time with them so that you can bond otherwise they don’t know you. Have a feeding routine outside of their enclosure so they never expect food there and will never confuse you with food. They are smart but if they just don’t trust you they will try and leave. You have to kind of force your friendliness on them until they trust you. Hold them a lot. When they’re trying to bite you or being aggressive, ball up your fist so that they can’t and show it’s who’s boss. Let them try, keep your fist balled up so they can’t bit you and try to pet them. Them keep petting them firmly so they know who’s boss. Let it sense that you can crush them at anytime and their attacks dont work yet all you do I love it. They will eventually be tamed and enjoy your company. Fall asleep while you carry them like a baby and give them kisses. Savannah monitors are the coolest. And it’s even cooler that you have to bond with them so much in order to tame them. Cause if you can do that you realize how smart they really are.
@Berserkerkitten5 жыл бұрын
We had a sav for nearly a decade and he was the most amazing pet we ever had. He roamed around the house with our cats, was incredibly friendly and super easy to handle. He'd just open his mouth and let us put the food in when we hand-fed him. He was housetrained and incredibly clever and playful. We spent a LOT of time handling him and taming him. Savs can be incredibly difficult, some of them never like being handled at all. Ours was tame like a puppy, but that doesn't mean all of them get like that. They require a ton of effort and attention. Getting tailwhipped by one can be pretty nasty. Ours only ever attacked when he was a baby and then completely stopped, but I've seen adult savs, which didn't want anyone near them at all. My point is, savannah monitors can be incredible, they can be fun, tame, even social and playful. They can also be total jerks.

Cuan Chulainn Florida’s climate is pretty unique compared to the other states, at least south Florida/some parts of central. Its humidity and year-round high temps (we wear long sleeves if it hits 70F lol) is pretty ideal for a lot of species that wouldn’t survive the, say, drops to 40F in Georgia or the extremely dry heats in other hot states. I have an argentine black and white tegu. The basking spot should be 120 degrees, not 100-110. Just a little FYI. UV bulbs also matter, some brands are much better than others. I know you said it wasnt a care video, I just wanted to point that out if any new tegu owners watches this video. My tegu story: I went through two countries to get my tegu. I was on the waiting list for 6 months, I was the first to pick one from the clutch. He's in an enclosure that is slightly bigger than 8x4x4 (its 250x125x125cm) and has his own room. I open the enclosure when im home and hang out with him. Great animal. But, he was a demon the first 6 months, so you have to be prepared for that (I honestly wasnt), but I never gave up and now hes as sweet as they can be. You got unlucky if your tegu was a work full in the first 6 months. That is most definitely not the norm. 120 is the absolute max you should go for a tegus basking spot and that's pushing it. Tegus come from a tropical climate. Their natural basking temps range from 90-110. And generally they spend most of their time burrowed. UVB is without a doubt, the most important aspect for most larger reptiles. Especially for a tegu due to once again, their tropical climate. Very nice on the enclosure size.

If I got a tegu, I’d buy one of the ones wild caught from florida. feels like it’s supporting a good cause
@calebbauer2175 жыл бұрын
Arnica Moana I know it feels like it, but it’s actually making things a lot worse. By buying wild caught it supports more wild caught selling.. which is overall not a good thing because of the risks that come with it. I definitely would go for a captive bred animal. This applies with any animal you can get that has the ability to be bought captive bred.. If you ever do decide to get a tegu keep this in mind
@arnicamoana78615 жыл бұрын
Alpha Wollf wild caught from florida. where they’re invasive and being killed en masse. that doesn’t affect the market of wild caught from their native country. it takes individuals out of where they aren’t supposed to be and supports those trapping them. where is the downside?
@GoHerping5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'd say that's one of the good exceptions for buying wild caught
@arnicamoana78615 жыл бұрын
GoHerping it’s probably one of the only ones I can think of worth supporting tbh, at least outside of rehab or rehab/release
@calebbauer2175 жыл бұрын
Oh well, I did not know that.. thank you for telling me. I still stand by the opinion to go for captive bred animals, but I have looked into and yeah this would be a good exception I believe.. thank you for informing me of this haha. Sorry for the criticism

Ive had both, currently keep a gold tegu as my main pet, never been bit by my tegu but my savannah monitor use to nip me all the time in his first year so I def recommend Tegus over Savannah’s, plus Tegus eat everything we eat eggs/fish/fruit/veggie/ground turkey/etc and can be potty trained, clicker trained, hand fed, etc.
@sofialaya5965 жыл бұрын
Also remember that argentinian overo tegus are more chill than bolivian red tegus. And please put them in real sun sometimes, they love sun, and walking a bit, and chilling in some stone or hot dirt. They're not snakes that can be still for a year
@cooperolm96875 жыл бұрын
Snakes won't be still for a year either of you give them to room to explore, they're mostly lethargic when kept in undersized enclosures as many people do.
@sofialaya5965 жыл бұрын
@@cooperolm9687 yea I know, it's an exageration, also depending on the species and individual, like ball pytons and little sand boas behaving differently. Compared to most snakes though, tegus are more active.

I rescued a very abused Savannah monitor about a month ago. They are so for driven. It's crazy! He's pretty friendly for the most part but he still has his moments lol. I personally wouldn't recommend these animals to anyone unless they have a lot of money, time, and patience. I didn't realize what I was getting into when I rescued third monitor, I just knew I could give it a better chance than it's current situation. It was a real eye opener when I started researching their care. He's in good hands with me but I don't think I would ever get another one lol

Miss NA I have a juvenile savannah monitor and it tail whips, hisses and bites when I try taking it out of the enclosure, I’ve had it for about 5 or six months and I try working with my sav as much as possible. Do you have any taming and trust tips?

@@sunflowerss122 make each interaction a positive one. I click trained mine to get him to warm up to me, lol. People use this method with birds, dogs, and other animals. Check out the non-judgemental Savannah monitor group on Facebook. They're very helpful :) I lucked out with mine being pretty calm. Although when he has his moments of attitude, I just leave him be. Younger ones are different though. I highly recommend checking the fb groups out for more experienced advice :)

Dude I know a tegu that got beaten by some dumba** kids because they thought it would be cool, then he was beaten by a dude while his friend held the tegu down by the tail with his foot, poor tegu had to rip off the end of his tail to get away (the reason why they were beating him was because they thought he was a Gila monster sml) Anyways, he ended up hiding in a drain until the rescue team that I volunteer at rescued him, he is the sweetest big boi you’ve ever met, sadly however he has permanent head damage and has to take special meds for his migraines... but yeah, he’s good other than that!

To your point of whether a novice should own an intermediate reptile, I am going to agree with you. I am glad there is a good amount of information out there, but it still should be to the benefit of these animals to have a more experienced handler taking care of them.

As a tegu owner I greatly approve of this video! Savannah Monitors are just terrible pet’s: Being wildcaught, complex, and incredibly difficult to care for. Tegus. Are just AMAZING! 10/10 great video! And 10/10 that Tegus are awesome pets! (#tegusnotsavs!)
@joeknutz93625 жыл бұрын
Idk there's just something about savs that are cooler than tegus IMO mostly the buff forearms and legs and dinosaur head, most savs do tame down quite well actually it's just most of the savs on KZbin are mistreated rescues who are traumatized. They are definitely more difficult to care for though but that much more rewarding because anyone can keep a tegu healthy but not many can keep a sav healthy

5:03 , just the way he looks at this monitor cracks me up, it's like a combination of disappointment and disgust. Similar to when your parents are so mad at you they aren't even mad they're just disappointed, but the thing that they're disappointed about is the fact that you keep taking shits in the middle of the living room floor.

@@danh7805 honestly I wouldn't recommend a Savannah monitor for any one unless you have a tone of time and a free room in you house because my Savannah was huge he was at least 4 feet long and he ate a lot and needed to be held at leas 2 hours a day to go play around and explore

With regards to the “should you get an easy first reptile” question I honestly think it depends (mainly on how dangerous the animal can be and how dedicated/how much research you put in). For example, my first reptile was a panther chameleon which no one recommends but I did my research and he lived a long happy life. With monitors, however, I’d definitely recommend getting some experience as messing up with socialization on a lizard that big could land you in the hospital.
