It was an honor and a pleasure to have you on our stage at TEDxWestChester. What a simple yet profound concept - that the well-being of employees be a filter for all decisions. Matt, if widely adopted, wouldn't this have the potential to alleviate so many of the world struggles!?! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.

Hello my friend! This is Matt, from the TEDx talk above. If you have any questions about the talk, please feel free to ask by replying to this comment. I try to answer as many of them as possible.
@calebwest85745 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt! I love the video and have shown it to a bunch of my friends and colleagues. A few of us were talking about cultivating love within the workplace and how it is oftentimes a lot easier to show love to others when we are happy with them (or for this topic, happy with their performance at work) What do you think are the best ways to lead someone with love when they aren't necessarily performing well within their position in your organization?
@MattTenney5 жыл бұрын
@@calebwest8574 Great question. Most important is to assume the best. Assume that if someone isn't performing well, there's a good reason for it. For example, maybe there's something going on their personal life. Then, be sure to start any conversation about performance issues by asking if there's anything going for the person that could be affecting performance. You're immediately demonstrating love by starting this way. You can further demonstrate love by helping the person with whatever difficulty they're facing or removing the obstacle to them being their best.
@enis-cirak5 жыл бұрын
I just watched the video again and saw this comment. Thanks for offering your time! I had a question about how to implement this in day-to-day interactions. Can you give an example of a daily or weekly behavior that someone can do to embody this type of leadership?
@danfreschi-edge96835 жыл бұрын
Hi, Matt! I appreciate your talk about love and loving your employees. I think litigation has scared businesses away from using the word and actually doing it because they want to create and maintain the separation. One of the things I have been talking about over the last 5 or so years when I am consulting is, in fact, loving your employees, loving them so much and wanting what's best for them that if they are not a fit to love them out of your organization. The act of love is healthy for both parties involved and you may even create a stronger bond because of it. I have also been expressing that the act and art of feedback, that is giving employees or other feedback, can be an act of love. Unconditionally, wanting wants best for them and sharing where they can improve and where they are making an impact, again, is healthy for both parties involved. So, what are your opinions and thoughts?
@MattTenney5 жыл бұрын
@@danfreschi-edge9683 I agree completely! Often people hear my message and think it means being soft about performance. Nothing could be further from the truth. If we love a person, we want what's best for them. That means, as you mentioned, if they're not a values fit it's in everyone's best interest to help them find a different team to play on. If they are a fit but are exhibiting mediocrity, we would help them be their best selves, not because we want more value out of them, but because we know that helping them be their best will make them happier and help them be more successful for the rest of their careers. It just like parental love. I would never sit idly by while my kids do poorly. I get involved to see what can be done to help them. I do it not because I expect value from them, but simply because I want what's best for them.

Such a great reminder of what truly matters in life. Thanks for this lesson on leadership and impact!
This is my analogy. You have a bicycle. First you ride it over rough roads to assess the discomfort between rider and the bicycle. Later you device ways and means to install 'shock absorbers' between the two wheels and the frame. Of course, when you ride it again there is an element of enhanced comfort between you as a rider and the bicycle for it would last even longer. I have dwelled myself for almost 45 years now to come out with making workable 'specific absorbers' between Employers & Employees 👌🏼 Of course not forgetting that the 'proof of the pudding is in the eating'. 😉

Matt, I really enjoyed your presentation. I’ve heard it said “be friendly with your direct reports, but don’t be their friend.” I understand that sentiment, in case of needed disciplinary action. But, after listening to your presentation, I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
@MattTenney5 жыл бұрын
Hi my friend. I actually disagree with this. Although fraternization - being friends with some employees but not others - should certainly be avoided (this was drilled into me during my time as a Marine officer), I think the more vulnerable we are with team members, the better. Being friends with someone means we share our struggles and shortcomings with them. While many leaders shy away from this out of fear of looking weak, I think it does the exact opposite. It shows the courage to be vulnerable, which deepens trust and human connection, which are both instrumental elements of any effective human relationship.

Sounds optimistic. But will never happen. We see what’s going on right now corporate profits are up 61% yet employees are striking across the country because they can’t afford basic necessities. Profits/Greed is the North Star for most companies now. Our only hope is the new generation changing this culture.
@tomsd8656 Жыл бұрын
This is true, but to achieve this model, you need to keep hiring and firing because not all people are the most amazing assets. You can afford to keep the company afloat with some underperformed staff but not half of it. Some people are just toxic. And focusing on employees mean you have to take care of the toxicity, because toxic people have their influence too.

How is love the top priority when its effectiveness is actually being measured in terms of net income and stock price? This isn't love, it is manipulation.
@MattTenney5 жыл бұрын
This is a great point Valerie. If leaders do not genuinely love employees, they will not succeed. People know when they're being manipulated. The motivation has to be to love well simply because it's the right thing to do, not because it will make an organization more money. The reason I mention that loving well is actually very good for business is that I know that some people will never try to change and do the work to love better unless they see that it will make them more successful.
@alioahb-015 жыл бұрын
I think it's a bit simpler than that. Human relations are built on give and take. In this case, give love and gain rewards for your company. There's nothing wrong with being manipulated into doing something when you also gain something from it e.g love. And my gosh, love is a valuable thing.
