What is the closest competitor to the i8 Roadster?

A Mercedes SL? Not from a technical standpoint, but I’m guessing the same kind of driver. They want comfortable sporty car with an image that isn’t boy racer.

It's cool...but the fake exhaust noise in the cabin as well as outside make it cheesy. For the price of this you're knocking at the door of 570s, AMG GTR and a few others. It's for a special buyer looking only for the i8

The i8 is an underrated car and one that needs time to appreciate. For driving in the real world it is plenty fast enough and has fantastic traction. The narrow tyres mean you have to pay more attention to corner entry speed. It also feels like a very technically advanced car. Finally, hardly anybody pays full list price for one of these. Combined with the very low running costs, it makes a lot of sense for everyday use.

Great video Paul, keep up the good work! Even after all these years I'm still undecided on whether I actually like the i8. Do have to say it looks better as a roadster and the whole concept is of course kind of cool but I find it all to be a bit gimmicky. For instance part of the exhaust being a speaker, yes a speaker, for an exhaust...

I'm in both camps. BEVs work great for some things, hybrids are going to be necessary for others. If I had the money, I'd have a BEV for the daily grind and a pure gasoline ICE for track days.
@snail4156 жыл бұрын
Probably starting a fight, but I really think it competes with the Tesla P100D. Not in the sense of stats, but in the sense of what consumers think the car says about them. That’s not something reviewers regularly consider. If it were my money, I’d take this car every time. It covers so many bases and goes beyond 0-60 stuff. It looks like a car that would cheer you up every time you’re in it, and ‘give you a break’ when you’re not in the mood for action. Having seen the hardtop on the road, it is the business, three cylinders or not.

I’ve a C350e, and there, like the 330e, they’ve made Hybrid fun; made electric fun. Close to 300 bhp, yes a little bit of extra weight over the back wheels, but quite as a mouse for those journeys in or around town; albeit rare in rural Wiltshire! As an aside, I think we all need drones filming us as we drive!

Beautiful car. I personally just not Into the hybrids. If it delivered all 370 hp (both gas and electric same time). Then it might be a fun little car too. But I think something that looks that good needs to work as well as it looks and sound it too.

People keep bashing the i8 because it's not as fast as they would like. But what about all the other areas where it excels? It's a beautiful exotic car, without the harsh and uncomfortable ride like the other supercars. It's way more refined than supercars costing 10 times it's price. It's a very "high quality" car that is also quite fast, since it launches faster than an M4!

Very true. Absolutely no bashing from us. Just an honest opinion on wishing it was a tiny touch more powerful.

This does take the FENG to the next level. Having a real exhaust pipe and a fake one is pretty normal these days, but to than have a speaker *inside the fake one* for the people OUTSIDE - oh boy! Then again if it delivers the performance and experience you want - who cares?
@paulsalmusic6 жыл бұрын
Is that sound from the speakers?
@EricMiltsch6 жыл бұрын
It only sounds good because one of the exhaust pipes is literally an external speaker. This is the goofiest thing I’ve ever heard of. Excellent video nonetheless, very well done. Beautiful car.

@matgee88926 жыл бұрын
But is it that silly? Is it any more silly than putting a loud exhaust on your car so you hear it more? All cars could be made quiet but manufacturers put sport exhausts on to add to the experience. Does the exact location of where the sound is coming from actually have any impact on the driving experience? I did used to think it was daft but i am not so sure now. If you can have your nice exhaust noise but still be a good neighbor then that seems like a good thing.
@schumifan786 жыл бұрын
@@matgee8892 I think you nailed it, internal combustion cars are made "fake quiet" where as this is made "fake loud" and that is a key difference when it comes to the character of a car.

Fantastic video as always, 6:07 looks like a scene out of a sci-fi movie or game! I'm definitely excited for whats to come with EVs and hybrids. I felt like it was going to be the future around 2012-2015 with all the hybrids being released, particularly all the hypercars (P1, LaFerrari, 918) but I feel like manufacturers are slacking off at the moment as if hybrids were just a phase. Wasn't the new Supra suppose to be a hybrid? I really want to see an exciting mid-range hybrid like an SUV, hot hatch or AWD sedan.

Yep, I think Toyota has really lost the plot on this one. I have a Toyota Yaris Hybrid (i8 EV torques 184, Yaris 125) and when I heard that there was to be a sporty version I was very disappointed that it was an ICE, so very 20th century. It should have been a Yaris PHEV with 4WD, Toyota have all the relevant kit and software, but still fail to use it imaginatively, which is a shame.

Had one since Aug22 and it has inspired some 21K Miles of touring all over europe inc these roads. It is 3 cars in one, switching easily between them, refined GT Mode eats miles fast, birdsong mode is a fab experience touring and it will beat Porsche 911 easily on twisty roads,track! IE Fast enough to thrill and thrive on the best roads. No surprises really, it shares the same architecture with a carbon fibre chassis, double wishbone, multi-link suspension, ICE drive to rear, EV drive to front, EV torque fill to rear as the 1M+ Porsche 918 Spyder. Just no big V8 and noise supercars' are supposed to have. It does have 570 Nm torque, is 100kg lighter and with a drop top you can use on the move. If it had more power and noise, I doubt I could have afforded it or enjoy touring the same. Still unique in the experience package it delivers. Possibly BMW's Ultimate touring machine. Let's tour again!

Fully electric cars make no sense to me as they are, but I suppose the push for them will encourage development of battery technology and make refuelling/recharging more practical. Like VHS v Betamax, a standard format and widespread network of chargers has to be sorted before they can have mass market appeal. A hybrid makes sense now and, longer term, hydrogen fuel cells appear far more sensible than heavy battery laden vehicles. If you think potholes are bad now, imagine what they'll be like with the added weight of batteries in every vehicle.
