Every modern Chevy car I’ve driven has had an awful interior design from a human factors standpoint. The Chevy Cruze has the same wheel design that you are describing. It’s horrendous and impossible to manage. We don’t even have to get into the interior buttons which have all be “re-imagined” by Chevy to be in the worst positions and the logos of standard operating gear are sometimes redesigned. Be like Toyota. They have had the cruise control stalk for over 30 years because it works and you don’t have to change it. And if I get into another Toyota I can always actuate cruise control because it’s always the same. I can always actuate the wipers and the headlights. It’s all consistent. Lots of companies are trying to push the design boundaries by re-designing the human-machine interface and it doesn’t work.

What you talk about in the video makes 100% sense. The problem with this video is that most individuals who get luxury/expensive cars don't get them to race or track them, they get them as status symbols for their wealth. The average person doesn't care about the ergonomics of the steering wheel, engineering of the car, etc. Most people purchase nice cars to either show it off or want to put their foot on the throttle and go fast from time to time. The engineers and designers making these cars know 100% what there doing, they don't appeal to the minority of people like you who are super interested in the entirety of how the car works and performs, but to appeal to the majority that want style , tech and features.

So, theres exotic models for looks driven by rappers, women, and middle aged men, and then theres ones for performance, cherished by drivers, racers, speed freaks. Most try to do both a little, but really cater mostly to one camp, usually as a result of risk tolerance and pefrence of the owner. In this case the owner is a soulless comglomerate, run by boomers assisted by a "artsy types" who they tolerate in the design building, with low risk tolerance on an already low margin product.
@sarges17124 жыл бұрын
part of it, imo, is the simple fact 99% of drivers have no clue how to properly drive. Not saying I do either but at least I hold the wheel as proper as I can, don't text or use my phone, eat, drink, drive with tunnel vision, left lane hog, etc. But these companies are designing these vehicles for your casual driver. The guy just hops in his car and drives as a tool. A boring task they need to deal with to get from point A to B. Not driving because it's enjoyable. Same reason the manual is dying imo. Whats funny is I've hated most steering wheels I've had in my cars but couldn't figure out quite why that was. Simple stupid, yes, most cars have several electronics attached now so there's that bulking piece of plastic at 3 & 9....

Casey, just found your videos this morning I really enjoy them. I agree with you about the C8 steering wheel especially it not being round. However I also understand why some of the design is like it is. I am a recently retired automotive engineer and spent my last 10 years working on the design and release of steering wheel switches for one of the big 3. I have an idea why the spokes and switches on the C8 steering wheel are packaged where they are and I am sure it was dictated by packaging space/feasibility and also cost. This steering wheel definitely does not work for sport driving or racing and that is because it was designed for the majority of the drivers that will buy a C8. Those C8 buyers will use the car as a daily pleasure vehicle and will never do any sport driving or racing in the car. Based on your comment about making your own C8 steering wheel I think it would be a great idea if you could start a company to make race inspired and designed aftermarket replacement steering wheels for current vehicles that would be compatible with the vehicle’s OEM electrical architecture and airbag. As for why the C8 wheel is not round you need to watch the KZbin video "2020 Corvette Chief Engineer Talks C8 Stingray - Autoline After Hours 489" as the C8 Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter talks about the car. In the video Tadge addresses the C8 steering wheel design and he also addresses why the C8 has no manual transmission. The steering wheel discussion starts at time is (21:20) and the transmission is discussion is at time (48:35). Absolutely true, it can as bad as he said and everything Casey said was on point. It is a steering wheel designed by committee, as most modern wheels are. When you have a team of people designing for commuter cars, shart utility vehicles, and fleet vehicles and you have a further mandate for a consistent design language you get design carry-over, group think, familiarity with convention, collective imposed selective self muteism, and budget based decisions. I know for a fact that the Cruze and the Camaro had interchangeable steering wheel components, hell it may have been the same structure just different wrapping, buttons, or wiring harness but I can't remember to say for sure. What I can say for sure is that its worse than the Logitech g5 steering wheel I have for video games, even with an airbag.

Thanks for sharing. I investigated different hand positions after an insurance company recommended the 4-8 position. "Less chance to break your thumbs if the airbag deploys". Not a major problem for me since I have a normal car, but I still turn off all electronics when driving on wet ice. I guess that is the same as driving with 800 hp in dry conditions.

Dude you cannot be serious!!! The square steering wheel is nothing new. Ferrari uses them in a lot of their street cars. The latter C7 Corvettes use them on the bottom. Had you actually owned or driven a C7 with the round steering wheel you would completely understand why Chevy went into this direction. People with thick thighs find it difficult to get in and out of the C7. The flat button steering wheel solved this. The C8 top is for max driver vision. I think your issue is false and very contrived. You didn't sit on any C8 design Engineering team or design this car. Stop the foolishness...

I dont want the c8, it's cool being m/rear and all, but that steering wheel, and with pretty much all new vehicles come with display screens, arcade style steering wheel, and other pointless features, it just takes away from the enjoyment of driving a sports car. My celica, for example has an instrument panel, a stereo, a steering wheel with no buttons. Perfect.

Reminds me of the Austin Allegro steering wheel back in the 1970s. (If you're not British, you won't know.) When the prototype Allegro was assembled, it was discovered the wheel obstructed the view of the instruments but it was too late to modify the design of the instrument panel. So it was decided to make a square wheel instead.

I'm no expert, but my thoughts are: 1 If you were supposed to drive at the 9 3 position, wouldn't the spokes be connected at the 10 2 position? 2 Aren't you supposed to let go with one hand and cross over the other hand? 3 On newer cars, isn't the steering wheel rotation angle to actual steering ratio non-linear, such that you don't have to rotate the steering wheel as much as you would on an old car?

As a designer myself, poor design really makes me cringe. Clearly they didn't conduct enough or any real user testing during design and development.

Today the C8 should be classed as a very capable sportscar. 20 years ago it absolutely would have been a full on supercar. I do think you're probably overreacting to the wheel though, it can't possibly have got through all the development and testing and ended up being as you seem to put it, unusable. I haven't touched a C8 steering wheel myself but logically it can't be as much of a disaster as you think.
@nicoleyensen70625 жыл бұрын
@Simon Coles --- Absolutely it can as bad as he said and everything Casey said was on point.

I tend to drive at 9-3, but I've found that my wrists don't turn enough to take advantage of the amount of arm clearance I get with that. I end up having to take the lower hand off the wheel at about 160 degrees anyway.

I don't understand the current trend of flat bottom or oblong steering wheels on current sporty cars. You're the first person to explain the benefit of using a 9:3 hold. Negotiating 90 degree corners at a relatively quick clip has always been a challenge holding at 10:2. I'll have to try it.

For different car and with different aftermarket wheel i got same drawback. And of course found out it too late. Glad to see that it's not just me finding not able to wrap around wheel fingers on 9-3 position as ergonomic issue. Yes, wheel provided few other nice bits, for example smaller diameter, 2cm closer to driver offset .. but i couldn't wrap around fingers and it drove me nuts :(

I could be wrong, but I think what hes trying to say is we should be hold it at 9-3 for that tactile feel... TBH though that Corvette wheel would piss me off, and I really dont think wheels should be square on top. I understand on the bottom for that leg clearance, but it should be a smooth 270 degree curve at the least. My RX7 FD the stock wheel is far to big, so swapped it out for a Momo Jet which has fantastic ergonomics. Cant stand uncomfortable steering or pedal/shifter placement.

Probably won’t get an answer but when I was reading the manual before my driving test they stated that your thumb should be along the steering wheel and not to hook them. The reason if I remember correctly was better control. This is in California and 10 years old info so I could be wrong.

Wheel switch panels exist, it's a bolt on accessory and there will likely be a wire harness to adapt it plug and play.
