This video was shot for the Road & Track Performance Car of the Year 2019 group test at Thunderhill Raceway West. Subscribe to R&T and keep print journalism alive! www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars...
The 2020 C8 Corvette is here! Mid-engined, dual-clutched, fighter-plane-meets-Camaro styled, and far cheaper than Porsche 911's and the Acura NSX. With a 495 HP naturally-aspirated LT2 V8, double-wishbone suspension with mag ride, and the sport exhaust, this 3LT/Z51 car is the top of the initial C8 food chain, and makes us incredibly excited for future iterations, though less so for the base model.
GM provided the vehicle, a LOT of tires, and mobile support at the track for this test.

Well Keith, you got to admit that the Fiero was, at least as first, kinda of a joke, things got a little more serious with the V6 but still... That said Matt should've knows or remembered the Fiero, he didn't say ''Chevy'' (or Corvette) 1st mid engine effort, he could've backtracked stating that Fiero was a Pontiac... No he said ''GM'' so yeah he show'd us either no matter how a car guy he is, he seems to have incomplete car culture, or he just not prepare himself enough before doing a video with basic info, witch is just as bad when someone asks us to take what he says seriously, and he gives wrong info. After that, credibility falls a little... I know it kinda sounds like I'm trolling him, but I enjoyed Matt's ''one take'' for so many years, and was happy for him when he started collaborating with Road & Track. So c'mon, Matt no more mistakes that even we (the second you said ''GM"s 1st mid engine effort'' I caught it, and found Keith8880 that caught it to) car guys with a life and job not revolving around the car industry caught...

Exhaust Sports Auto Totally agree. The issue with the cheap materials in the interior are expected given the price point. A base 911 is in the $97k range where the C8 is in the $60k range. With a $37k price difference, I would expect better materials and finish in the 911. What Corvette has always offered was big value towards the performance which I think they have achieved with the C8. I would expect better power plants (e.g., dual overhead cam) as GM begins to begin the evolution of the C8 power plants. I will still have to drive it to experience the car first hand. I am a long time Corvette guy but also have a 911 (991.2 GTS) so I sit on both sides of the fence!

Hey good points sir, yea I sat in a C8, it too was a preproduction like what Matt drove here so GM likes to remind is it’s not “best quality.” Regardless I did notice some of the cheaper parts that Matt mentioned that weren’t “A spots” and some misalignment/panel gaps on the exterior. Not the end of the world but sort of what I expected due to the price you mentioned and the 911 is rock solid almost Lexus like but again that’s the price gap. I too also like Corvettes May put a deposit down for like the spyder or something, if I do a review on it, I really wanna say what’s on my mind and be as detailed as possible. But I appreciate what they’re doing for sure

I think Matt has been spoiled too much from driving a lot of half million dollar exotic sports cars. The C8 corvette is a $60,000 dollar car. It's not supposed to have highest of quality interior materials like a Ferrari, it's supposed to have some cheap plastic here and there. That helps to keep the price point to a obtainable level for the target customer base. The Corvette is a mase production sports car. Matt said the Corvette has slight understeer. GM purposely gave the base corvette understeer to make it more manageable and safe to drive because the average buyer of a Corvette is not a professional race car driver and is not going to take it on the track, it will most likely be used as a daily driver vehicle. With a mid engine set up and no understeer one could easily loose control of the car and crash into a tree, that's a potential liability for GM. The Corvette is and has always been the American alternative to a Ferrari. It is the Ferrari that is obtainable to the average working man and there is nothing wrong with that. Just appreciate the fact that there is a Corvette, and enjoy it for what it is.
@MichaelF1
@MichaelF1 4 жыл бұрын
I think he was pretty reasonable. The 3LT is the top model, I cant have full leather, or something nicer than plastic? Considering how it drives, plastic concerns largely dissolve and he was fair to that. Transmissions are constantly improved, and the car will only get better over time. We're still talking about the great american parts for good prices, tunes for less, corvette. Praise GM for doing the rare steak without sauce

For the interior refinement, etc., you have to remember you are driving an $80,000 car and not a $200,000 car... The Corvette has Always been, a 'Super Car" for the People... not just the Elites ... If I am doing 1:30 laps around Road Atlanta, I don't give a flip if the lower dash panels are plastic! I don't say this to disagree with your preview... I think you have done an excellent report -- and GLAD you were able to Get this EARLY opportunity! But I have owned Corvettes in the past, and just enjoyed the HECK out of chasing down the "Elites" in the North GA Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, driving their Very Expensive 'Exotics', with my "cheap American Hot Rod"... Good tires, a few suspension tweaks, and a bit more than stock HP and I was crawling all over those guys. Like Carroll Shelby beating Ferrari... who cared how 'deluxe' the Cobra interior was..? LOL !! But, yes, my Brother has one on order... 2LT with Z51 & Mag 4.0 ... and 'everyday driving' will actually be how he spends MOST of his time behind the wheel. And after "the New wears off" comfort and 'details' will matter much more than at 'First Love'...

It doesn't look like it likes to oversteer. When it does, the slip angle looks very small. That's why he kept having problems with the corner at 5:00.. Thats also why he said, "IF" you get oversteer at 6:30. Implying you'll never get oversteer. Overall it handles well, probably could be adjusted with alignment

Matt, I have been watching you, and been a fan for years. I have to compliment you for the very beginning of this video. This car can literally make or break Chevrolet, they took a huge risk on the affordable pricing, and when they launched it. In order for them to survive they really need to attract a target market of younger men, that are unable to afford the previous price range of a Corvette. I think you are very aware of this, and I respect how you have been careful, and disciplined with your choice of words. Thanks for being a REAL car enthusiast!!

Yeah or he just feels threatened because this car makes his really expensive cars obsolete so he has to say what everyone in all the comment sections has been saying and give out b.s. about, "confidence of having been here before." He obviously loved the car but didn't want to get called out by his audience so he's now having to give all these qualifiers in a section that is as long as the actual preview and driving section.

He's saying that the luster will wear off for someone who reviews cars for a living. Some one like this will get to drive sports cars all the time and therefore it will become mundane after a while. So judging by the fact that Matt Farah was so charmed by the Corvette it would suggest that the vehicle is truly exciting to drive. If you need further simplification i cannot help you. No one can.

@@Zankaroo Those are simulators that have game modes built in. (I haven't played the newer games, but all the ones I have played had a strong focus on sim physics, even if they weren't quite as accurate as some of the contemporary PC sims.) The issue isn't that they aren't good enough sims, but that there's no built-in method for preventing randoms from being dumb. Take I-Racing and let randoms pop into your event and you get the exact same problems. Take GT or Forza and limit your players to people you know and it's pretty good. It's pretty common to get on car forums and track good/bad players through a roster that way and create your own licenses and leagues.

Matt, you’re flat out one of the best at what you do. I trust your reviews because you’ll tell the whole story about a car and abstain from giving a bias review for political points. I’ve ordered a C8 and I’ve already been anticipating exactly what you’ve said. I wish that GM would shake off their marriage to cheap plastics in their flagship cars, but so much for wishful thinking. Nevertheless, I expect that the C8 will be an impressive car and fun to own for awhile.

The new C8 Corvette is absolutely beautiful, I never thought id support a mid engined vette, but I love the new design.

I love the driver focused controls orientation, yes give everything to me. When you bought a corvette you we're only thinking about yourself, I love that the engineers and designers took that philosophy and ran with it.

that strip of buttons in the center is absolutely hideous...I have no idea why they crammed all the center stack buttons in one long strip? Laziness for sure.

I wasn't aware there was any effort put into the fiero or corvair. They were turds. The C8 is definitely effort though.
