Having dappled in farming for 10 years, I don't understand why people do not plant gardens? Lettuce, tomatoes, and cukes can be grown by a blind man! A 10x25SF garden will save a family over $5000 a year. Self-reliance is coming back the world over.................

Thank you for reviewing this topic. The advantage of living in Belize, would be owning your property outright, growing your own food ... I agree with your assessment, on why the poor are being pushed out. This is a global issue. I own my own home, but it's getting more expensive to shop at a store... I wish I had been more prepared for this... I did have my own chickens and garden... but I haven't been very good at keeping up with it all... still I am happy for my orchard and vineyard.... My neighbors house payment is over 2 thousand for a 2 bedroom OLD house! So guess it's good to own. Hope you are doing well.

The gas prices floored me. We didn’t factor in gas when we traveled and explored the country. $10/gal is painful, crappy rental, land travel was very expensive. Farm stands had awesome, fresh tasty food. But How TF do locals travel. We picked up hitchhikers constantly and folks were respectful and grateful. What we were paying in gas, might as well bring as many folk as you can along the way…

Not surprised. I still live in BC Western Canada and our Provincial and Federal Government increases prices for goods and services. I moved to Canada in 1994 and the grocery costs have increased by 200%. The official inflation is always dimmed down to a few % per year. Covid is a great excuse to inflate prices. Must say; the willingness of Americans and Canadians to buy land in Belize has triggered the price increase too. Oil rich Provinces in Canada (Alberta) payed ridiculous prices for average houses here on Vancouver Island and "spoiled" the markets including rental places. At the end it will affect the locals (Belizean) the most.

Did you know that my lawyer, the Right Honourable Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize from 2008-2020 and his associate Rodwell Williams were responsible for creating the economic, taxation and tariff systems that Belize currently has. Unless I'm mistaken, they were trying to force the Belizians to bootstrap their economy similar to how the Japanese did it in the 1950s and 60s. At that time the Japanese had put heavy tariffs on imported manufactured goods and little to no tariffs on raw materials. Unfortunately, what worked for the Asians doesn't work for Latin America.

The U S. citizens are escaping corporate rule. They're going down there after selling everything they own and buying up property and houses. That's going to increase the cost of living. It forces locals to leave their own country because they can't afford to live anymore. I plan on doing the same.

My house was for sale for 8 years and I got 50% of what I paid 12 years earlier. To put in context, when I bought in 2010, it was the cheapest house on the entire International Living website. Belize’s currency is pegged to the US dollar. Every time the US turns on the money printing machine, the US dollar and the currencies of all countries that peg to the dollar or use the USD get devalued. THAT is the cause of the inflation. Billions sent to Ukraine by the US causes the price of goods to inflate in Belize, El Salvador, etc.

@@alexdunphy3716 Making too much money in causes inflation. People have money to spend and they spend it no matter what the price is. Everyone just bought airline tickets and went on vacation. Then the complained about high prices, but they paid the high prices. The way to stop inflation is not to spend money. Put it in under the mattress. Prices come down. But if you have too much money and you want something, you buy it, even if prices are high. Complaining and whining about it does nothing. Inflation stops when people don't buy. Nobody wants Florida condos and the prices just dropped 40%. So in any case, what I think you are saying now is that the cause of inflation ... is inflation everywhere. On that, you are right. Everyone has too much money and pays the high prices, which only encourages more inflation.

I have concluded that chasing low cost locales is a futile pursuit. A place that has low cost of living has only 2 possible future trajectories. It will either degrade to an unacceptably low standard of living or will start escalating up eventually finding an equilibrium and parity with the places you wanted to escape from. I watched that movie played again and again. Playing cost arbitrage is a losing proposition in longer term (and if your expected life span is short, then why even bother?). Why expose yourself as ATM cash cow for local corrupt politicians. I'd rather focus on setting myself up for a lot of passive income, minimum liability and maximum mobility.

Gas has always been high because the government taxes it so high. Also, you can not buy seeds in Belize for planting your own garden. Fruit trees are cheap.

There are places where you can buy seeds. Reimer's has seeds, Brodies has seeds, a couple of the guys at the Saturday market in Belize City have seeds. I have about 200 pepper plant seedlings that I started by planting the seeds I found in ripe peppers.

The global supply of all $USD has increased by 50% in the last four years. USA has pretty much hit the 'death-debt-spiral' since covid and the deficit spending of US government is now far out-pacing the 'revenue'/taxes collected. After deficit spending, there's only $500B left to pay down the $35T debt of which >$1T is annual compounding interest. So the yearly 'debt payment' isn't even half of the 'growing' interest. It doesn't matter what 'rates' The Fed mandates, Uncle Sam will continue to 'borrow from the future' (debt) because politicians live in the present and never have to pay back the debt, are never held accountable, and have legal immunity to insider trading, subsidized govt programs/zombie programs, and have a financial incentive to protect their money printer that helps them steal 'real things' from the world without having to work for them. The $USD is the King government currency and has been turned into a weapon against the poor of the world. International leaders take on $USD debt through the IMF and do even worse to their own people (in most cases). The US gets cheap resources and slave labor. The 3rd world 'leaders' get rich. The people collect the debt and inflation. Because the majority of people want $USD over their shitty currency, the game continues, giving life to a currency that the few can print practically for free who then have first dibs in buying real things...the nice things, too, driving up costs for everyone else. This is why many people (mostly boomers) have turned real estate into a business, which is now fucking over GenZ, globally. GenZ is the exit liquidity for the boomers, btw. Villa Kings control multiple properties, creating a renter class of people and driving up prices by creating scarcity. This is a global problem. Government currency is broken. When currency isn't scarce, everything else will be. When 'money' is scarce to create, everything else can be in abundance as technology's natural state is deflationary (makes everything more affordable as tech increases production capabilities and frees human time). Government currency isn't money. It's a medium of exchange vehicle that leaks value over time due to debt financing (increasing the supply of currency units so it takes more of them to buy stuff). Government currency is a form of communist theft - hidden from public view. It is a weapon against private property (it forces people to constantly take on risk and borrow against their assets to outpace the money printer, signing over their ownership in the process.) Gold failed as money because rocks don't travel through digital networks, take armies to move/guard, massive forges to verify, and isn't divisible enough to use in daily life as tech makes everything more and more inexpensive. Gold gave birth to Fiat government currency. You can't even flee your country with gold. It gets confiscated at the border. And in a SHTF scenario, bullets will be better currency. Want the solution to inflation? Find the money that's hardest to inflate, that has no central point of failure, is absolutely set in its supply so that it can properly measure financial value (like what money is supposed to do.) The metric system is set in measuring weight (gold weight...cough) and distance. Why is government currency not set in measuring financial value? Well, bitcoin, not crypto (scammy shit), is set in supply - a first for humanity - and can't be killed. Stay on government currency, deal with government currency problems. Bitcoin is here to stay. Governments are getting behind it, and so are the wealthy elite for their own self-survival. Stay on bows and arrows, or adopt gunpowder. Good luck all.

From 2025 - 2030 thirty percent of all baby boomers in the United States of America will have retired. That's somewhere in the realm of 20-30 million people. Paying off all of those Social Security Pensions will bankrupt the US. In 2035 the first Gen Zers will be retiring and that will add another 20 million people to the Social security rolls. That means there will be 40-50 million people who will not be working steady jobs, will be drawing social security and unemployment benefits in the US and will leave a shortfall of 100 million workers (American families aren't having kids these days). The US economy will be so fuckked. Wages and inflation will soar through the roof and the US banking system and the US currency will be worth nothing. The same thing will happen in China and the EU and is already happening in Japan and South Korea.
