@@thec2359 i also thought that for the karate kid universe but then you realized that in the tournamant, Hawk did like a flying elbow at someone's face, Aisha just straight up punched a guy, Johnny also punched viddal in the face in KK 1. So punching someone's face is somewhat legal in the karate kid universe

@@1punchbrownyt338 Johnny actually landed 3 punches vs Daniel and none counted as points for some reason. 2 punches were minor but they still landed and the one he knocked Daniel down with was illegal for some reason despite it being done earlier in the tournament. Mr. Miyagi paid the ref confirmed😁

@@LBoke , punches being easier to land shouldn’t be a factor since so many head kicks were landed anyway so it wouldn’t make sense to ban punches which has less excessive force than kicks so head punches were legal It was never stated that punches to the head were illegal, everything above the waste is legal so head punches are legal

In that kind of tournament in those days the rule is actually no fist to face contact. Any kick as well as palm strikes would be legal.

@@dylancasella888 no part of the foot is as dense of a striking surface as a clenched fist. Punches are more likely to break noses and teeth. The only exception to that is the muai Thai version of the roundhouse kick where the shin bone just above the ankle is the preferred impact point. Karate uses the instep of the foot.

@@MrJamesakeller Somewhat true. It depend on the kicker, type of kick, & how skilled that kicker is with that particulate kick. The kinder Question Mark Kick is DEMOLISHING people in MMA right, by a couple guys that do it perfectly. That’s just an example.

@@BrottenGuy You're missing the point. The instep of the foot can stun, even knock someone unconscious. Same thing with a palm strike or hammerfist. However, a denser striking surface is much more likely to break bone. I work with steel pipe and when a piece of pipe is stuck in a machine we use hard rubber mallets to knock the pipe loose. Not nearly as dense as metal hammers so they don't dent the pipe. But we can strike the pipe with more force than our hands alone.

I can’t remember when it was, maybe when Johnny and Daniel were in the pub planning to have their ‘redemption’ fight… but Daniel said that anything above the waist was a point and that Johnny knew that. Johnny didn’t deny it either, just said that he’d win 9 of their 10 fights.

In karate point sparring, head count is allowed (sometimes worth two points) but face contact is not. Kicks to the side of the head would be legal but the face kick would be illegal. Back strikes are sometimes also illegal either scoring no points or a half-point deduction.

I have a theory why the crane kick is legal. I think if someone runs into his opponent's fist or kick even if he hits him in the face it counts. Remember what Terry said to Daniel in karate kid 3 when he taught him to punch. "He said he ran into your fist not your fault".

To be fear. The crane kick would have been legal if this was a Real Karate tournament anyway. The “no kick to the face” rule doesn’t exist in Martial Arts Tourneys. In fact, low kicks are banned almost universally because they are “below the belt” on almost all circumstances. The Jordan Geri kick is a good example. ROI house. Front kick. Hook kick. Meant for upper extremities including face which would be legal.

Yeah this is the same in taekwondo especially in upper ranked matches they allow more force to the head although I don't typically see a front snap kick which is a lamer crane kick as being very effective especially since if you move to the side you can rush in and likely nock him over while he is on one leg

What confused me was in Karate Kid 1 I think Johnny lands a right punch to the face when it was 2-2, and the ref says no point. I think even before that Johnny punches him in the face when he's laying with his back to the ground and that wasn't a point either.

In karate compilation kick to the face is allowed but not the crane kick, round house, hook kick etc are allowed but not crane.

Wait, if everything above the waist is legal that means that low kicks are banned right? (A low kick is a roundhouse kick aimed for the thigh with the intent to make it difficult for the opponent to move, its fast and easy to hit, but also easy to block.)

Interesting. I always considered the Crane Kick illegal, because it would appear it was reckless and highly endangered Johnny, the force of the impact might have been too much. But in KK3 Daniel cheated by preforming Kata in a Kumite tournament. The two subjects are separated, and one is not allowed to be shown in the other at least by both Japanese and American tournament rules. I bet Daniel knew he is doing something illegal, he planned it for getting a lousy point on Mike. And then he goes saying he beat Mike when Mike was clearly the better fighter. I hope that Mike is coming back, and with or without helping Terry Silver which I believe of course he won't, to have a rematch against Daniel when Daniel can't cheat and to wipe the floor with him.

Confusion it is never stated punches are illegal, but kicks are. Johnny hits Daniel in the face and gets a warning. This is the only explanation as we see many kids get kicked in the face throughout the tournament. However, I think it's interesting that in Cobra Kai Miguel uses the kick and is awarded the point when the rule changed in 85. Strange they changed it back. Seems like a kick to the head should be illegal as it's much easier to cause serious damage with a kick than a punch.

The crane kick is legal because of the fact that it wasn't made illegal until way after in fact back in the 80s a lot of people were genuinely kicking each other in the face eventually they made a rule that for that to be the case they would have to be padding and no kicks anywhere near the nose

Fists aren't normally legal in most Karate tournaments, watch Chuck Norris fight in his tournaments and you'll see when he's not using his feet for a kick, he's using his palm towards the face. A punch is more Kung Fu and Karate is... Tournament fighting, most of it is just getting points towards the opponent with a set of rules and areas above the waist that you need too hit to win.

After the amounts of warnings cobra Kai got, I think the crane kick can slide. Also, Miguel did it and was ok and robby kicked Kenny in the face (although in a rigged tournament where silver knew robby was his best chance). The Miguel one proves it plenty though
