Ive driven trucks with that "breaking assist" bs. I was driving down the road with cruise control on going 70 mph fully loaded with steel i-beams. Im a flatbedder. As im driving, i go underneath an overpass and bam! That pos system kicks in and jammed my brakes on so hard, i was rear ended by another trucker, coffee went flying along with all my belongings in on the bunk and spilled my food i was making in a crockpot. It was a total disaster. The guy behind thought indid it on purpose like a brake check. Cops came and info was exchanged. Long story short, i was fired! They said the proof of me being wreckless was on the montering system that detected a hard brake situation, even though i never touched the brake. Luckily, im one of the few that when tieing down i-beams, i cross chain the front, which i believed saved my life. After that, no one would hire me. I had to take a 1099 job, save up money and go buy my own truck just to keep driving. I now have freedom and will NEVER work for some bs company ever again.

I have the same problems with the braking assist in the Freightliner I'm driving now. The stupid thing will occasionally see the shadow of the overpass and think it's an obstacle in the road, slamming on brakes. You never can be prepared because you never know when...it's just so sudden. Class action comes to mind!

Is there not a distance setting for the Adaptive Cruise Control? I have only ever used it on a car, but Lexus had a button with 3 bars on it to represent how close to the car in front, short bar for city and the long bar for highway. In a car it great, just set the speed about 5 higher than you want to go, then it keeps up with the car in front, when they slow a little, it maintains the distance, sort of like an invisible tow line, speeds up, still maintains distance, easy peasy.
@1369911111 күн бұрын
People not maintaining a steady speed is so frustrating. I have the old style cruise control I can't even use it most of the time. Have a most wonderful day
@shaneamundson119210 күн бұрын
One of the main reasons some of us, myself included, often do not keep a steady speed is that we leave more distance between ourselves and the vehicles in front of us, than most drivers do. When vehicles get in front of us, we take our feet off the throttle to reestablish a safe distance. Also, some of us take curves slower and blind hills. If you and most other drivers weren't following us too closely to begin with, this wouldn't be a problem for you.

Clutch, i share your sentiments about the unsafe features of the truck. Here are some things I have learned about these trucks that may help. Backing, enable creep mode and disable hill start assist (hsa) Acc in the settings on the dash, you can lower the following distance time. It can probably be set through the ECU to always be a lower time. For the auto braking, my company told me they turned down the sensitivity of the sensor and it rarely activates for me. And don't use cruise control on ice.

I’m a retired trucker. Years ago the industry and the “ government” decided that the braking system for large trucks was the 121 braking system. What a FARCE that was. You either had brakes or you didn’t. Sometimes if keyed up on the CB, the brakes would lock up or no brakes. I ran the Rockies, Colorado mostly. Hell who needed a seatbelt with these brakes, pucker power was the best! Learned to cut the wires on the wagon,via truck mechanic. I use to test trucks for a major brand. 1 of the trucks had that same system problem. Not fun with a skateboard doing 75 or more. Same scenario as what you all are saying. The only way this system will change is an incident, where you or the traveling public lose their lives, because of this “safety equipment!”

You can adjust the distance on Adapting Cruise Control. When someone is going the same speed as you are the and they are to close, like they just passed you and now in front of you. All the systems does is back off on the power and lets your truck slow down to get more distance between you both. If the car is going slower then you, it will turn on engine brake and slow you down. If your truck has the camera in windshield also. It uses both and can stop the truck for stopped traffic. If the traffic starts moving the truck will release the brakes and start moving also.

The system will disable everything because it can see anything with the radar coved in snow and ice.

Never thought of disabling anything because I was a company driver. And besides, not sure how your insurance company looks at disabling...? You need to write your congressman about your concerns on the safety. My friend and congressman Mike Collins in Georgia is fighting to change a lot of that. He owns a trucking company with over 100 trucks. He don’t like them either, but our fine government is who requires them on trucks. The people they appoint to head transportation has no clue of anything with trucking. So the more people that write to their state representatives the better chances to get things changed.

I had to drive a 17 Cascadia for 2 years. I never used the cruise just for that reason. Mine would not do brake check ,only did that once in a truck stop parking lot; it would have a "collision " message pop up on the message center. Another thing i hated was the lane position sensors, drove me nuts. This safety sensor crap doesn't belong in trucks! I feel that those safety features are in trucks for those who dont know how to drive. I hated driving that Freightliner. On the plus side it was dependable always got me home. It get great fuel mileage because i always bobtailed & hauled empty trailers. Before the Freightliner I drove a KW with those same "Safety Features " and it would brake check for no reason once on ice with empty hopper trailer. It was a 13 speed manual the Freightliner was an automatic. That KW would dobthe brake check even with cruise control off.

These "safety features" have become mandated by de facto through slightly cheaper insurance rates which add up for huge carriers with tons of power units. Truck manufacturers can charge more for the invasive and sometimes dangerous tech, service can charge more for certs necessary to calibrate/maintain it, and when drivers realize how cheaply made, poorly designed and inneffective it actually is, the insurance companies can deny claims bc the driver disabled/bypassed it. It's a huge racket, and needs to be looked into.
