3:14 That is just flat out incorrect. Wireless transmission of audio delivers objectively poorer sound quality and is more prone to interference than cables. And as for digital connectors, there is going to be a digital to analog conversion anyway, the only difference is that it happens inside the headphone rather than the phone. Not to mention that the best sounding headphones still use a jack for connection, so you're going to need a headphone jack if you want to maximize sound quality, even if a better connector could exist in theory.
@piotrgraniszewski85446 жыл бұрын
Amen, brother! I'd like to add that analog interference is not even a problem at such short cable lengths. In the professional audio world balanced audio connectors are used. but in those cases cable lengths greater than 5m are common.

Not to mention that those hp use different type of jack than your 15$ earpods so you wouldnt use them anyway. And unless you are really fanatic into music using great headphones, the best sound formats and have excelent hearing you will hardly notice any significant difference going from cable to wireless. I have over 100$ headphones, listening to cheap downloads or from youtube etc like most people do and I hardly hear any real difference when I use them wireless or with jack.

“They need the space.” No, untrue. Strange Parts added a headphone jack to a iPhone. It’s just a empty space where the headphone would be now. “Waterproof” many manufactures waterproof phones with a headphone jack. I use my headphone jack much more then I go swimming with my phone.
@harshnemesis5 жыл бұрын
He broke like 10 screens while doing that and he put it right on the corner, that extra space was used to help the phone sustain accidental corner drops, if they had put the jack there the screen would shatter as soon as you dropped the phone and it hit the corner. The waterproof headphone jack is patented and costs royalties meaning it drives the price up to give us something that most of us don't use anyway... no thanks. The water resistance is for accidents, not for swimming with your phone... if the water gets in, the warranty doesn't cover you. Many people accidentally dropped their phone in the water, they are most abused pieces of technology on the planet, so water resistance makes much more sense than a crappy 3 pin connector from 60s that takes so much space.
@harshnemesis5 жыл бұрын
@jackthegamer Nope even from 2 meters the iPhone dropped on a corner does not break, you get scratches and dings on corner, so it's all cosmetic and both the screen and back glass are still fine, this is because there is some room behind the frame which really helps to absorb the damage... adding a headphone jack which is pushing against the screen is the total opposite... there just wasn't room for it.

Sorry friend, but Samsung have one of the worst real world battery lifes out there. Don't try pointing me towards synthetic tests saying otherwise, i've already seen them. I've also owned a samsung and had to get rid of it after 9 months because of it's attrocious battery life, not to mention how fast their batteries degrade too. The only way a Samsung device's battery could get better is if it exploded. Oh wait, they tried that feature already. Didn't go down too well. You do have a valid point with the first and second points though, although most people never even touch the S Pen. The main reason people buy a note is purely for the larger screen. There is another point to be made as far as space goes too. Have you seen the inside of a Samsung phone? They still use the same small pack style batteries that have been in use for over a decade. They are generally much smaller than what other manufacturers use today, which begs the question: With the fact samsung have atrocious battery life and degrade very quickly, are their batteries even the amount of Amps they say they are, or are they modding the battery's built in firmware to report a higher number than is true? That would certainly explain how when I had an S7, it always died within 5 hours of being unplugged. I have never had that bad of a battery life with ANY phone before, Androids included. Even when I had a Sony Xperia Z2, that lasted all day despite having a 2K display, without problems. And I'm not the only one either. Every friend of mine who has/had a samsung reports the same complaints. Even Linus himself had to release a follow up video to his S9 review where he initially praised the battery - because he realised after some time that the battery is in fact, absolutely terrible. And by some time, I mean a mere few months, never mind the expected minimum device lifespan of 1-2 years.

I had 2 phones max. But the 1 foot drop ended it. Hell my screen was still flawless. No scratches at all. My current phone is fine despite the same issue. I drop it occasionally so the sides are all scuffed up and chipped(i just never find the need to buy a case). but the screen again is still flawless(i just take that much care for it) the only problem with it is the Headphone jack has worn out.

And the Samsung Galaxy S5, one of the first phones to have waterproofing, needed a cover for the charging port, and not the headphone jack, showing that it was easier to waterproof the headphone jack than the charging port. I wonder what would happen if a startup came along and released a phone that was relatively thick (at least by today's standards), that incorporated all features consumers looked for. A headphone jack, the biggest battery that's available, dual cameras, wireless charging, expandable memory, no notch display that's 120hz, and most importantly, stock android (no dumb skin or bloatware). I mean call me crazy, but I'd happily buy a thicker phone if it meant I got more functionality out of it. Edit : Of course extensive R&D would be necessary to create a good user experience. Weight and heat are definitely concerns, those are the issues that would need to be addressed, new technology and innovations are always in development so with lighter components and better heat transfer solutions, it could be possible. In all honesty I thought the newer Samsung phones were close to perfect, but the poor android skin and the fact that they can't help but push Bixby down people's throat was a major turn off. In terms of public perception and marketing, developing a good brand image is hard and takes time, however not impossible. Mother's not buying phones for their weight is a real thing, but that's where the free market comes in. This kind of phone would not be for everyone, and that's fine.

1. Wireless headphones are expensive and take a bit to connect compared to just plug and play of the headphone jack. 2. Bluetooth headphones require to be charged and if they do not use the same connector as your other devices then that is another new charger you have to carry around. 3. Latency in mobile gaming which (for better or worse) is a big deal is a major issue. Also mid game disconnections, re-connections require exiting the game most of the time. 4. Dongles (included ones) do not allow charge and use at the same time, another big need for mobile phone gaming. 5. Wireless earphones create issues with WiFi sometimes when they are running over the same frequency. 6. Usb-C earphones are another cluster since one earphone might not work with another phone that also has the same USB-C standard. Cross compatibility sucks balls. There is no point of removing something essential such as the headphone jack when you provide no alternative that is as good as or in most cases better than the current solution. It is a dumb thing and will remain a dumb thing until there is a genuine replacement. That said I will have to live with it because Apple did it, and monkey see, monkey do. The only change in recent years I like is efforts to improve battery life, although often it is undermined by also adding more demanding software that completely negates the battery improvements.
@Murzac6 жыл бұрын
"I want physical buttons that I can press without having to look rather than digital buttons that don't work if the phone freezes or glitches out" To be fair in the situation where your phone freezes or glitches out even if you did have physical buttons the program that's supposed to be registering those button presses.... is frozen or glitched out... so as a result it doesn't matter whether your input is coming from a digital or physical button. It won't do anything either way. The buttons that do work even in those cases are handled by the OS and again, it doesn't matter if they're digital or physical. If the OS can still operate fine, the buttons will work. If it can't then you're shit out of luck either way and will have to boot the phone.

Another reason to continue with the headphone jack, Type C can be used for royalties or just for a brand.
@Kalvinjj6 жыл бұрын
@@9SMTM6 can't agree. The Type C connector is inherently more complex by design, it just can never be cheaper to produce and to implement on production machinery, let alone hobbysts. So you've added a cost factor there regardless of a DAC even being there, I'm still assuming analog out will be present (adding a DAC will be yet another cost again, which can never mach it's absence in the replaceable device's end). In case it has a DAC, add to that list power wasted on an extra power conversion stage, that would not be necessary if the DAC was inside the device that already needed those power rails inside. Not to mention that while USB Type C can be reversed, the round connector can, well, rotate even while plugged to infinite steps. Quality wise we could already use better external DACs (and thus USB headphones/amps) long before, so that's not an added advantage either. Not to mention that the DAC would have to be better than what the sending device has to begin with, not the case with the vast majority of USB headsets out there, that barely match a PC's on-board sound.

@1337GameDev6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, lets see. 1. They need the space. It was demonstrated that a headphone jack could be added to an iPhone 7,8, 10 by using a method that takes up MORE space than the port does if soldered to the board. Not a valid excuse. 2. they need waterproofing. The headphone jack port is a cylindrical tube, with metal contacts (that can flex). This can (and has, a la the Galaxy S5 Sport in 2014, and current models have similar space for components) be waterproofed EASILY. This isn't a valid excuse. 3. Analog quality is worse than digital Actually no. analog just takes more bandwidth. That's it. It's a circuit issue. We have SOLVED this for a LONG time with a DAC built inside phones, that can easily handle CD quality audio (and with premium devices, FLAK quality output). Interference isn't really an issue either. The signal is quite shielded if you have any decent headphones. But then again, that's not Apple's fault, that's your shitty headphones. This isn't a valid excuse. 4. They wanted lighting royalties. Oh, you bet. I've heard that royalties can EASILY be $5-$15 of EVERY lightning device sold. Every one. That's ABSURD. Obviously 3rd parties pass this cost onto you, so it's really just your money. 5. AirPods were their solution. I'm still a bit torn, because they didn't make any BEATS branded headphones that had a lightning connector, so I'm unsure they would prefer their AirPods over beats they recently bought a few years ago. But the idea is there, and I'm sure sales DID increase, so I believe this was definitely discussed before doing the decision to remove it. So the main consensus is: It wasn't due to waterproofing, space, or audio quality. It was likely due to penny pinching, forcing lightning royalties (especially adapters for existing tech as that's cheaper for users), increasing AirPod sales, and making people more comfortable with wireless audio, such that HomePod and Siri could benefit. It really was anti-consumer.

@@HatsOnJohn I don't necessarily agree with them, but that is the business model manufacturers have to push for new technology. The problem was with finding a unified standard for USB type C which phone manufacturers failed to do so. Call them shills or whatever but I remember when MKBHD, Linus and others were less happy about it, now there's almost no complaining when a new phone has no headphone jack. Fanboys will remain fanboys, some longtime users were angry when HTC, Sony and more recently OnePlus removed the jack, but eventually they accepted it. I bought the Note 9 expecting to still use the headphone jack but every day I use it less and less. It's good for some serious audiophile music listening, but for casual music streaming, AAC, AptX and LDAC are more than good enough. The latency was awful for games, but that was due to badly optimized software and has been improved greatly with the Android Pie update. Unless you really care about that SLIGHT difference in competitive gaming, it isn't the end of the world. Having to charge is an inconvenience at first but many Bluetooth headphones have either batteries or charging cases that allow them to last longer than a day. I'm more annoyed by the fact that many manufacturers are still using microUSB on their Bluetooth headphones for charging.

Headphone jacks dont harm water resistance anyway. Its a ridiculously simple connector, which makes it incredibly easy to waterproof. Second part is definitely true. I'd much rather have 5000mah and a couple more mm than a couple less mm and only have 2700mah. But my phone has 5000mah and a headphone jack and is unofficially waterproof down to a meter. Also cost about 900€ less than your average current gen iphone

@@Mornys but why get rid of the jack in the first place? it works, it's been standard for 60 years i dont see why manafacturers NEED to remove it
@Mornys5 жыл бұрын
Because it's redundant. 3.5 mm jack has only one function, to output audio signal, which a USB-C port or whatever Apple uses can already do ~100000 times more efficiently. The 3.5 mm jack is just an extra hole, extra components and waste of space in a device that's supposed to be compact and efficient.
@itemushmush5 жыл бұрын
@@Mornys one component extra (plus wires) isnt an issue when phones are $1000 plus. also the space is wasted? the only real dimension that gets affected is the thickness of the device, and any device thinner than a 3.5mm jack is too small IMO

easy solution: make your own battery banks, get rechargable high-capacity batteries for it (you can use AA'S but i'd suggest getting 18650's since they hold so much more battery life) and then get a LG/Sony phone or even a motorola.
