In this weeks video we discuss why the Holset HX35 is the best budget turbo there is. On top of that, we modify it by adding a new exhaust housing as well as refurbishing it. In upcoming videos we will be comparing this to the Garrett GT35R and G25-660. Who knows, maybe even a CX Racing turbo.

As a design draughtsman at Holset in Huddersfield UK, I detail designed the HX35 along with the Midrange engineer. It's my baby. Holset Engineering Co. is now Cummins Turbo Technologies, I worked there man and boy for 32 years, my son is still there, it's a great place.

The Holset HX35 has been the secret budget turbo for decades now. I figured everyone would have found out about them by now. I think if you're laying money down for a brand new turbo, you should buy the best you can afford. If that means it costs $2000, so be it. When you get up to that range, a lot of times the differences come down to things like ball bearing CHRA, which technically might not make a huge difference, BUT when chasing down that last extra bit of power, you really do get what you pay for. I loved it when Cleetus put the ball bearing Precision turbo on his auction Corvette, and seeing how when he shuts the engine down that thing spins for DAYS. I personally have my eye on Forced Performance's Xona Rotor line of turbos. I'd love to try running one of those. That said, for budget builds, you can't go wrong with a quality used turbo. I'm partial to Mitsubishi myself, because I've used their turbos and loved every one of them. My first turbo swap was a used 14b that I bought off ebay for $80 (this was back when the cheapest new turbo was a small 16g for $550, nobody knew about Holsets, and Chinese turbos didn't exist). I was rather disappointed when it arrived because the turbo was coked, so bad that it wouldn't even spin freely. But I was able to take it apart and rebuild it just by thoroughly cleaning it out, no parts needed replacing. The previous owner had ported the exhaust housing as well, so that thing RIPPED! Taking a turbo apart is not that big a deal, just make sure you mark the alignment of everything and put it back together the same way. Loctite that shaft nut or you'll end up with a smooth compressor wheel (don't ask me how I know this)! This is why I love Mitsubishi journal bearing turbos, because they perform well and are super resilient. Even if you abuse them, they're easy to clean and revive. I would buy a used known turbo, like any Mitusbishi or Holset, long before I'd ever buy a new Chinese turbo. Why? Because you know what you're getting, and they're quality precision parts. I think Holset is probably the better way to go as they're cheap, and like you said, they're engineered to last a long time. A Mitsubishi turbo is more likely to have been abused and subject to extreme conditions like my 14b was. But I'd still rather buy a coked up turbo for $100 than spend more on a Chinese turbo. From what I've seen, a lot of these turbos seem to be a mishmash of whatever they have laying around. That might work out fine for you, and they might be assembled and balanced correctly, but it's an absolute crapshoot as to what you're getting. That's not to say that parts made or assembled in China are automatically bad. Good manufacturing CAN be found in China. I know nothing about CX Racing or their turbos other than what you stated in this video, and if they're doing it right, their turbos are probably great for the money. But there's a reason why new turbos cost as much as they do, so I personally wouldn't buy one. I'd rather stick to a known quantity, whether that's a new FP turbo or a used Holset.

I've been running a hx35w... Same one you have since the early 2000s. I recently went from a 12cm housing to a 10cm housing. I was originally going to do what you did but then I'd have to remake my exhaust and I have a Turbo support bracket. And I haven't had an exhaust leak in 6 years. I didn't want to open that can of worms. Anyway, I bought a rebuild kit and a billet compressor wheel at the same time. I've probably got 6 or 7000 miles on it... it's on a 2.8l. Spools around 3k. Sounds amazing it's a 5x5 design extended tip 54x78 Extended tip to 81mm. I highly recommend the bullet compressor wheel. If you're after spool go with a high blade count compressor top end 5x5. I did everything myself and didn't balance it. I run it a 17psi.

Totally agree about the hx35. Its pretty much my favorite budget snail. I've used them on a few different builds, my favorite being a top mount setup on a N.V. m50 with a Cometic/ ARP'S running on MS3. Put down around 450whp RELIABLY, and still had quite a bit more to go. These compressors can be had for as little as $100 or so in used condition, and you can get a rebuild kit for around $100 as well. They also come in both I external and internally gated versions. The letters on the end denote that. I believe they are either denoted as a 'Y' or 'HY.' They are also plentiful too which makes them great to use. Good video, some nice info on the Holset. We definitely think alike both liking these turbskis 😎👍

Are you running an M50b25? What is the spool and throttle response like? Im curious as im thinking of running a turbo M50b25 in my track car in the future. Hence im looking for good spool and throttle response without breaking the bank.
@pdee886
@pdee886 2 жыл бұрын
Yes non-vanos m50b25 although it can be done with any of the m5x, m20 or m30 platforms. The response and spool up time/ lag is very similar on all the m5x for example. You have to think that the hx35 is accustomed to be ran at much higher psi on the Cummins motors and worked much harder than it would be on any of these bmw engines. It is pretty much the perfect size compressor for the displacement that you are working with. You can throw a generous amount of boost at them and it isn’t even ‘breaking a sweat.’ I prefer the N.V. motor over any of the others for this specific application because of availability, price, simplicity and the forged internals. The fact that if something goes south on it, you can grab another to drop in for extremely cheap. To originally perform the swap if your car isn’t an m50, you can buy a complete roller with everything you need to start the swap out and get it rolling. For instance a ‘92 325i or ‘92 525i that has accident damage or body that’s hammered to hell can be found simply to get you started. Early e36/ e34’s that people have ‘given up’ on are quite common and if you find a wreck that doesn’t have any damage to the drivetrain you can even find them for basically scrap value. I’ve seen decent running and driving e36 or e34 chassis m5x cars for

Might wanna put a v band on your screamer pipe so you can clamp a little bike muffler on if needed, or have a capped off, v banded hole in the downpipe, and a little pipe to let you take the screamer off and feed it into the exhaust without much hassle. Not sure how it is in the states but a lot of tracks here have decibel limits, and screamer pipes tend to set the drive by decibel meters off like crazy!

Being a smallish turbo, doesn't take as long to spool up either. I've seen these things as replacements for the stock GM turbos on 6.5's, which, let's face it, Holsets are a huge upgrade. Two of these can generate the same amount of boost as a gigantic one, and for an engine governed at 3600 rpm, plenty of meaty boost to work with. I'd say that's where smaller turbos really shine, getting that initial spool up at low end rpm, damn near idle, great for autocrossing, corner acceleration, and of course Diesel towing.

@jusmx141 4 жыл бұрын
The WH1C or "wastegated H1C" and ONLY the WH1C has a 56/83mm 8-blade compressor and surge-ported compressor housing...the same as the early HX35 units. Airflow and power potential is the same between the two, although the H1 series has a weaker thrust system so you're still better to use the HX35 for a performance application. The H1 series is easy to detect as they have a bolt-on seal plate like a T04 Garrett and the compressor housing attaches with a v-band as opposed to a snap ring on a HX unit. The NON-wastegated H1C's all have compressors 54mm and smaller and don't utilize a MWE groove on the cover so be careful what you buy as some folks will list an older H1C as a HX35 as their fitment can be identical but there's a huge difference in potential and high-boost durability.

“HX35- This is the best known and most common Holset on the tuning scene, and the equivalent to a GT3582R, with almost identical wheel sizes in fact. Spec for spec, same housing sizes, they actually seem to spool better- Have you seen a GT35 hit 25psi by 3500rpm on a 2ltr? I haven’t at least, but plenty of twin scroll HX35 setups have. There’s an insane amount of variations of HX35s, 650 plus at last count. There are compressor inducer diameter sizes down to about 50mm (I’ve heard of smaller, but no proof), which would lower its power potential, but the most common ones, and the ones to go for, are the 54mm inducer 7 blade compressor, and the 56mm 8 blade inducer, both proven at 600bhp. There are rare 6 blade versions too, which theoretically should flow more for any given inducer diameter, and billet versions too, but seen no data that they’re capable of more. Most have 82mm compressor exducer, but many later spec ones have a 76mm exducer, but it’s unlikely to affect peak power and seen no proof either way. There’s a wide variety of turbine housings out there, but the best known one in performance terms is the 12cm one, though I’ve seen 6cm undivided T4, 8cm and 10cm divided T3, and many more. Generally 11cm to 16cm housings suit the majority of applications, with 11-12cm best for 2.5ltr and smaller engines, and 14-16cm best for larger engines. The oddball small ones, 8cm, 10cm, are great for spool of course, but don’t expect to be getting 500bhp+ from them, partly as the turbine won’t flow as much, but also because they tend to come with smaller compressor wheels too. I’ve personally never seen a HX35 hit 600bhp on larger than 2ltr engines, but seen it on 2ltr and smaller engines many times, with the 4G63s in the USA hitting it most commonly, at 30-35psi. The most I’ve seen from 2.5-2.8s with HX35s is around 550bhp, and a little less on even larger engines. Spool-wise, a 12cm on a 2ltr with a twin scroll manifold is well proven to see 25psi+ by around 3500rpm, which is fantastic for a turbo of this size. Using a single scroll manifold and a 2ltr I’ve seen more like 1000rpm slower spool, 4500rpm, but still no lag between gearchanges, and some, just not ‘full’, boost long before then. On 2.5ltr engines, the 12cm housing even with a single scroll manifold tends to be full boost by around 3500rpm.”

The H*Y*35 is the best-kept secret....same compressor wheel and airflow potential as a HX35 but comes from the factory with a single-scroll T3 turbine housing so there's no need to purchase anything additional except maybe a v-band adapter for the outlet ($25-$50 on eBay depending on the size needed); just weld the flapper shut and you're ready to go. Airflow-wise neither of these units are comparable to a GT3582R....that would be the HX40 instead. The HY35 you'll want is only found on 99-01 Cummins-powered Dodge trucks with an automatic trans.

While I do agree holsets are the best budget turbos, 600hp is a bit of a stretch for the 8 blade hx35 you have. 500 is about max for the 8 blade. The 6 and 7 blades can flow enough air to support 600hp. Also, gt3582's are like a 700hp capable turbo, so they would be better compared to a 6 or 7 blade hx40, not an hx35.
