Cool video; For anyone interested in some calculations, Pressure and Force are related, and not they're not the same ; for example, 20 PSI is pressure; 30 LBS is force ; this 30 lbs force,if the diameter of the diaphragm is, say, 2 inches, ( 1 inch radius), will correspond to a pressure of (Pounds per Square Inch) approx. 30/ (3.14x1) , or 9.5 PSI; with the same diaphragm (2 inch diameter),if you need 20 PSI of boost,the force on that scale would need to be 20 x 3.14 or 62.8 LBS; but let's not forget that the exhaust pressure plays a role also, it exerts pressure on the wastegate(inside the turbo/exhaust housing),and for that reason, final testing needs to be done under load,be it on the road or on a "dyno"; in either case the boost gauge tells you all you need to know. In the video, the 20 PSI and the 45 LBS allow us to back calculate ( not that it matters much...) the useful diameter of the diaphragm inside: its area is (45/20) 2.25 sq.in. and the diameter is 1.693 in; this should be the same as measuring the OD of the actuator(smaller dia. inside the crimp) and subtracting twice the metal thickness,possibly .062,if the wall is .031. edit at 06:05 you should re-set the gauge to read in the same units; you have psi and inHg there,and 1 psi is 2 inHg.

Great job putting everything into motion, by the way. I made the initial tech thread to encourage others to participate and build things themselves because that's the true spirit of a DSM owner. I still fabricate these from time to time for guys who lack a welder, don't have a garage, etc....but it's great to see my discoveries are still being utilized seven years later. :)

Just wanted to mention that you / this test was Not a failure! It was a successful "Test and Compare" which is exactly what we needed to see. The actuator testing was a success and the compare was a success which showed us how to test and compare. It's important to test before putting into production and although the outcome was not as hoped for, this test proves again (as a reminder), that just because "it's New" doesn't always mean it's better! Thanks for posting the vid!

Thanks for the video. I'm having a little tuning issue with my system not holding boost. I am a little confused about the waste gate actuator holding boost. My stock old actuator was holding about 12 psi of boost. When I attached a pressure pump on it, it would start to open at about 2 psi but would let my system boost at about 12 psi. I got a new actuator that starts to open at about 14 psi with my hand pump but only lets my system hold about 12 psi. Not sure how that works but I purchased stronger springs for my actuator.
@jusmx1419 жыл бұрын
The Holset actuator mod definitely works to revive older MHI actuators with blown diaphragms, or if you're looking to hold more boost to redline on any TD05H-series turbo where turbine backpressure is so great that the stock actuator can't pull the flapper closed as the RPMs rise. That results in the common spike/drop when running a boost controller on too soft of an actuator. ;) There are a few different pressures to the Holset actuators out there- you can't really know what you have until you test it, but I've found the actuators which come on the newest generation of HX35's from Dodge trucks (99-02) as well as some HX40's (noted by the "indented" top cover where the hose nipple is located) seem to have the stiffest springs.

Adding more boost is more air and needs more fuel not to lean out. Advise for a tune if your ECU can't cope with minor change. Adding boost is not hard but there are other perimeters that come into play which should be addressed and you have not informed of the consequences.

i have a 3000gt vr4, builds no boost at all, and if I hammer down the throttle it starts sputtering like crazy in second or higher gear but runs normal if I don't try and build boost. could a stuck open wastegate cause these problems. I tried pressure testing the intercooler piping and have some tiny leaks but nothing that would actually stop my car from building boost. any ideas?
@VelocityLabs8 жыл бұрын
+Edgar Macedo Could be a wastegate, but that's a twin turbo setup, right? I'm not sure if it would build boost or not if just one wastegate was stuck open. That would be a good place to start looking though. Be sure to note when the problem started. Did anything change prior to the issue? Head over to the www.3sgto.org/turbo-engines-systems/ forums and post some videos as well! Good luck!
@VelocityLabs9 жыл бұрын
@Nathan Pratt , if it's stuck, it may not be able to open up all the way either, which could cause the overboost. What does your boost gauge show? Make sure the fire ring is seated properly and that the spring and diaphragm move freely when you apply pressure to them. Also, find your specific car forums and post some pictures and I'm sure someone can help pinpoint the issue. Good luck!

I have a question about my external wastegate. I know your video was about internal but I figured I'd ask. My wastegate seems to be stuck open a Crack when it's installed because a metal ring that came with it forces it open. I'm not sure if that's normal or not. I'm able to blow threw where the boost line is supposed to go and there is no resistance I'd figure it would be the oposite? Wastegate has a 7psi spring in it and my megasquirt keeps cutting spark because of over boost protection set at 11 psi.

Just a question: I'm about to install a heavier Spring tension in my waste gate actuator too. My car has had an ecu tune and doesn't hold the requested boost. Again though remembering it has had a tune for the requested boost.. In this video you have increased your boost (air) but have not mentioned fuel to compensate at all. Have you taken this into account somewhere or is it generally compensated for somewhere else? Limited understanding on modern systems but from what I do know this can can run the risk of leaning out and frying a motor... Can someone clarify. G
@VelocityLabs9 жыл бұрын
+Gino Cella Yes, you will likely need to adjust fuel for the new boost. I tune my car on ECMLink for DSMs, so it's really easy to do. You can add boost and just keep an eye on your Wideband. If it is running lean, just stay out of WOT until you get the tune updated. Good luck!

what sort of boost controller are you using. I'm aiming for 20psi on mine ATM I'm running gate pressure which is 10PSI. i'll be controlling it via the ecu i'm running (an aftermarket unit) and a 3 port solenoid theoretically this method of boost control via the 3 port solenoid should be capable of bleeding off all the pressure going to the gate

Velocity Labs Hey same turbo setup I have. I had terrible spool and boost control problems, thought it was the Wastegate as well. I would hit full boost at 5-6k and it would spike to 23psi. I talked to JusMX and he didn't understand why I was having problems. He thought it was my flex section collapsed causing restrictions, then the Wastegate etc. After taking everything apart and adjusting the FP 18psi Wastegate with no changes I ended up porting the hot side and wastegate hole beneath the flapper. After that it spooled how it should and now with my Hallman MBC I have it right around 25/6psi. Although you just needed to swap the OEM one for the Hx40 setup to work, I wonder why I needed to do so much porting for my wastegate setup to function properly.

Bradajay the td05 series of turbos are notorious for boost creep as the wastegate hole in some cases just simply can't keep up with the flow requirements.

Awesome video, good editing, good speaking. 1 quick question, I am feeling a leak on the line coming from the turbo/Intercooler hose into the wastegate. So I believe only the exhaust pressure is opening up the wastegate. This is causing an overboost in higher RPM of 3-5th gear. To prove if this is a correct theory: Do lower gears open the wastegate from more exhaust pressure and higher gears from more boost pressure?
@VelocityLabs9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks! To answer your question, longer gears (3rd, 4th, 5th, etc) have more time to build boost pressure, so you can see higher psi the longer your pull is. Fix that boost leak and it should help!
