The acceleration of everyday life: a plea for deceleration in the digital era In the new millennium, our lives have accelerated at a breathtaking pace. The introduction of the smartphone was a turning point in this development. We live in a world in which information, communication and entertainment are available in real time. The boundaries between work and leisure are blurring and the internet demands constant attention. I remember a time when reading the news was a morning ritual with the newspaper and replying to emails was limited to late morning or early evening. Today, with our smartphones, we are constantly 'online' and 'available'. It is as if we have collectively embarked on a race without knowing where it will lead or when it will end. This fast pace of life has left its mark. It manifests itself not only in the increasing number of people suffering from burnout, but also in our changed behavior and perceptions. We are experiencing an increasing inner emptiness that is often drowned out by the noise of the digital world. What does this mean for us as a society? In the long term, we are carrying the burden of a never-ending pace that is taking its toll on our mental and physical state. How many great ideas have been washed away by the flood of emails and notifications? How many times have we missed the moment because we were too busy looking at it through the lens of our camera to share it on social media? We need to learn to allow ourselves times of calm. Times when we put our smartphone aside and allow ourselves to just 'be'. By taking conscious breaks from constant connectivity, we create space for creativity, reflection and genuine connection. The pace of the internet since the 2000s has irrevocably changed the way we live and work. But it is up to us how we deal with these changes. Let's pause and look at the big picture. Technology is a tool that serves us, not a master that we should serve. By taking time - time to enjoy nature, time to be with our loved ones, and time to maintain our own inner calm - we can find a balance that we so often lack in today's hyper-connected world. And this is where the AI Pin can help us. This makes smartphones a thing of the past, less distraction, more life, finally. 😊

I agree, much like Apple and some others have done that create "futuristic" devices that have no intention of making it to real market saturation, rather to spark interest for when the next iteration comes out that IS designed for market. My favorite example of this was in the 90's and something we all use everyday, but was written off as a pipe dream: X-drive.....the first instance I experienced with cloud storage and data retrieval.

Great thoughts. A weakness in the analysis is comparing it to a phone. This product will do well for its niche. My only worry is that it ends up like Clubhouse. Too bad our smartphones are still extremely BAD at understanding us. Even nuetral english speakers. Samsung's new AI integrated into their new Galaxy showcases how pitiful the translation AI is. No way the AI Pin, can detect different accents and dialects BETTER than any current phone out there. The phone's can't do it. How can this device? Will also have to be in a completely quiet environment in order to understand both parties, what if multiple people are speaking at the same time? The technology exists but it's shown us, that it's not practical. If Google, Apple, Samsung, Amazon (Alexa), MIcrosoft (Cortana), all suck so bad that each voice-assistant department has quite literally lost BILLIONS and these are TRILLION dollar companies with basically endless resources, what makes any consumer convinced that this brand new product with a measly quarter billion in funding (compared to trillions) can make transcription/translation tech anymore practical?

Idk some of the criticisms you mentioned seem a bit confusing to me. The purpose of this device is to reduce the amount of time staring at and being on our phones. To me some of the criticisms you mentioned go directly against the ethos of the product itself. So if you are somewhere you can't have a one on one conversation with your friend who is not there then you probably should just sit there and be present in the space. Or the navigation thing you know people back then used to get around without any directions they just learned the area around them. Also yeah it would be absurd to look at your palm while walking down the street. Which is why you shouldn't do that and the device doesn't encourage it by trying to keep you on there obsessively. The price thing is the most valid one though tbh it's way too pricey for what it is.
@JoshuaChang
@JoshuaChang 7 ай бұрын
Those are valid points about living in the moment (whether it be on public transport, a meeting, or a classroom), and not feeling the need to text somebody unless it were truly an emergency. The navigation part is still tough for me but I’d imagine if they somehow made a “CarPlay” equivalent, it may solve that problem. Video calls… idk. Holograms? 😂 (jk) I think the hardest part of all of this is re-wiring our minds to envision what a world without a smartphone would look like. We’ve grown accustomed to our habits over the past decade and this is going against everything we’ve learned. If this were to hit mainstream adoption though, it would seriously impact tons of businesses. Apple, Facebook, Google, KZbin, Instagram, TikTok. Wild to think about, that’s for sure, especially as my job revolves around social media.

It cant be replacment but it can work with it. 2) Also using AI all the time instead of being able to access apps directly is also stupid. It is nice you can use voice and AI but stupid that you have to. 3) It could be good for vision impared and blind people and for translating conversation in real time including sign language. 4) Like any wereable with camera, it is going to pose challenges with privateness. 5) Smart glasses would make this device redundant but smart contact lenses would have to depend on simmilar device or necklace. 6) You could loose it when running. All spot-on points. I don't think the founders realized that they just made an updated pager. If this were a company-assigned device, where you could tie it's usability to like, say a hospital, and doctor's could use it with their database/patients, then I could maybe see some use case there? But, not gonna happen, they want wide adoption, and this device has failed on several fronts. I think it's a weird, almost techno-luddite pendulum swing effort...but I think the idea of it could work if we get to the point of hyper powerful mini laptops/smartphones to handle Any kind of work/anything that requires continuous manual input, and then something like the AI Pin-device to replace all quick, impersonal communication, most? smartphone tools (camera, it projects traffic directions better somehow, etc) ...haha so yeah, this isn't it (but I hope it leads to the better version/idea)

Only thing I can think of to add to it is to add a armband(with a screen thats bendable) you wear thats connected to the pin. Only thing then is battery life. If it ever does become mainstream I could see battery shops here and there where you would just swap out batteries to recharge for a new one fully charged for a small fee for the pin and another for the armband. Thats just what I think could push this further. Downside is people dealing with theft over devices. Until people don't have to worry about money and theft it'll never happen.

Good points! Combining I would guess that the humane ai pin will evolve into a gadget that ppl use alongside their smartphone (or as standalone if you want to go out without your phone for an evening or a workout)...but then it actually would work better as a super AI smartwatch. I think this is what we will eventually be getting, and then I'll buy :)

This is a new way to interact with technology.

May be the inventors can add an accessory with screen and solve the problem. Those limitations pointed out by you, can be resolved with introducing newer version of AI PIN. This is a particularly good device and there is scope for further improvement and who knows, it may replace the smartphone in the future.

I totally agree with your comments. It feels like they wanted a product and never asked what people wants. So they are pushing the device just to say "it uses AI". But really speaking... A mobile phone can just do all that. The usage for the frontal wide camera is pretty much for nothing other than anything that you could point your phone at.

We just became addicted to smartphones but life before the iPhone was way better in my opinion. People actually interacted with the world around them more often rather than sitting behind a screen. The issue I see with this is those that are so addicted to their screens now will have even more issues looking at their hand all day for the sake of looking at their hand lol

I've been closely looking for this for months now. You can't judge this as just another phone; that was your first mistake. The applications of computers are slowly disappearing as a whole other way of computing and interacting. You make a good point about how comfortable it is to talk to an artificial intelligence, and that you wouldn't want to have a conversation with an AI pin in a meeting. However, there are gestures that you can still use to record conversations, capturing moments. The hope is that AI will collect enough data so that you don't need to talk to it. I mean it will understand your position and location where it could remind you things before you go in a meeting without talking to it it’s called setting intentions you can’t set an intention with a phone try it it’s difficult there are a few ways setting an alarm but sending an alarm on this device is completely different you might want to set an alarm in a location or when you see someone or hear something you see how this is different type of computing all together collecting notes you can create a second brain I mean they showed it to you so the whole idea of the entertainment is also wrong it’s called experiencing your own and entertainment up you’re creating it not someone else it’s a whole different game my friend be excited about not what is happening now but 52 ten years spatial Computing allows you to communicate with hands gesture visual environment cues spatial location cues you have five acts as of information access and have just your little key bad on your phone literally Please consider this as a future technology that you don’t understand yet. The world still doesn't know the impacts of phones, especially when the iPhone came out.

Partly yes but it would also increase AI using time drastically. There are many positive sides to it and something like this might get its userbase. But would you like to have to input every message by voice? Are not there types of messages that you want to send silently while for example sitting in a bus or during lecture in school? Something you want to keep private? Also I am not sure AI will not try to interfere and censor your thoughts. People would not spend time formulating their own answers they would just tell something like "Hey AI pin reply him that x" but the AI pin will probably formulate the answer itself. People think about what to write even when they are on the go, but they would not converse with AI about it for much time, they would just give it instruction to do it I think. Also I could imagine it could refuse to send certain messages that you would want to send. And there does not necessarily have to be anything bad about those messages

Hi Josh, thanks for the review. I agree with your comments. I work with disabilities and low-income families. Many of the kids in these families use their phones to do homework, receive tutoring, tele-meds appointments; as well as shop or pay bills, because they don't have a computer. Many of us who are economically fortunate don't always realize there is still a large population of people we come into contact with daily, living paycheck to paycheck. This type of product may look good on paper, but as you have stated, it's not functional for daily use, and definitely not useable for families who need and use their phone/ phone screen to complete hundreds of daily tasks that require visually reviewing data and information. I'm not saying this can't be a good investment, but it's definitely going to be considered a luxury or novelty item vs a resource or productivity tool.

Meanwhile, augmented reality glasses, which have completely sucked, but seem much more convenient: where is this poseur climbing? And "smart watches", such as fitness watches, what's worse? They reduce screen time, have a lot of useful widgets, can measure telemetry, help with navigation, are allowed to read messages (which was the main point for their breakthrough), but they are not a replacement for a smartphone, but only an addition, an assistant.

Listen , your car has gps . And we have grown to be so attached to a phone . And immediate gratification. It’s ok to tell slow down , tell a person I’ll FaceTime you when I get home from the laptop , or possibly limit your social media in take and check that when you get home . We have to slow down , I see this as an opportunity to ease the anxieties of the world . We have to slow down , and get back to ourselves , and not scrolling someone’s ig page , or needing an emoji to express our emotions . What happen to talking . Lol
