The platform that saved Chrysler that actually had some fun to drive turbo cars with some overbuilt intercooled turbo engines.

I had the 1981 Plymouth K car new. I bought it again in 1987. Both was a fantastic car. If Chrysler made today I'd buy it again.

I scored a 16 year old 1986 Chrysler Executive Limo, navy blue with a sliding tinted privacy glass under the "tiara" top and a turbo 2.2 with less than 70,000 miles on it. It had been repo'd from some oil patch mogul. I bid $2700 and drove it away. I needed a car to take to job sites for work that could hold my kids after hours. We had some upscale clients including a couple of golf courses, so when I showed up, the gatehouse would always gesture me to park with the other execs, then when I started hauling out tools they'd realize "Oh, it's you..." It tipped the scales at only 3200 pounds so it was cheap to run and cheap to repair: when the timing belt got frazzled, 2 blocks from my mechanic, 2 of us pushed it to him by hand and the non-interference engine was back on the road the next day for a few hundred dollars, not thousand$. One of my younger co-workers (originally from New Delhi) loved letting me (older white guy) drive to job sites whenever 2 of us were required, while he sat on the comfy rear velour waving at his homies. And my daughter couldn't wait to tell her classmates "You rented a limo for grad? How nice. My daddy BOUGHT me a limo!"

Chrysler K-Car is a lifesaver for Chrysler with its surprisingly fun turbo versions. Robust, inter-cooled engines made it a hidden thrill on the road!

These K-Car limos are pretty cool.....And the entire K-Car platform saved Chrysler from extinction.....Think of that for a minute....There wouldn't have been any big rig styled Hemi powered Ram pickups...No Viper....No rear wheel drive 300,Charger,Magnum, Challenger...Etc...If Toyota or Honda would've made a limo out of a Corolla or Civic the automotive world would've loved it......But because it was Chrysler it is derided even now some 40 years later.

Interesting video! I had forgotten about these limos. I had a 1980 Chrysler LeBaron Medalion two-door coupe I bought brand new. It was a six-cylinder, not a 4. It also must have been made before the "K" car, because it looked wider and larger than the K car.. I do remember when the Aries came out. Thanks for posting.

My very first car was a light blue 88 aries LE 4 door like the one at 0:52 I called it the Scaries and smoked enough weed in it to make Snoop proud of me. Good times but DONT miss it one bit. AM/FM radio only, crank windows, manual bench seats, no cruise control, and slower than pretty much every other car out there at the time. It died from a blown head gasket at only 110k miles. Truly a disposable car!

My brother bought a new Aries wagon in 1984. I thought it would be a unreliable piece of junk. I was wrong, it would prove to be absolutely great car !

K-Car convertible. What John Candy & Steve Martin had for about 500 miles in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles!" Lime green with fake wood covering about half of the exterior.

Chrysler did have the M body during this time which could have been used instead for developing a limousine. I think the reason why they probably did this with the K car was fuel prices were extremely high in the late '70s and during this time everyone thought extremely high fuel prices were the new norm. Having a limousine based off the Chrysler M body would not really have any real advantages in the traditional sense versus the Cadillac or Lincoln, but the K platform would give them a possible upper hand if fuel prices continue to be a problem. Also consider that if you're being chauffeured, how powerful the car is or isn't is not as big a deal since you're not the one driving it. In the end, I would tend to blame more the cheap interior for this one's failure. I would also suggest that if they had found a V6 engine to offer in it it might have worked out better as a 4-cylinders were awfully coarse and underpowered.

0:33 - Lee Cocka?? You missed the first two syllables of his last name. Plus that's a long O, not a short O. I've never heard his name butchered as bad as that. 2:11 "Tooshus"?? Another word butchered by this guy. Is this even a human narrator? Anyway in 1987 my grandmother bought a new Dodge Aries, with the non-turbo 2.2. I drove it a few times and it was acceptable around town, but woefully underpowered when it came to pulling out on a highway, or other situations like that. I think I have seen one of the limos at a car show, maybe 20 years ago. It would be pretty cool to see one again. I've never seen one on the road. Oh, I almost forgot. Also in 1987 my brother bought a new LeBaron Coupe, which had a totally different body from those boxy sedans. It had the 2.2 turbo. At 140,000 miles the engine started banging. He took it off the road and put it out for sale at the end of our driveway. Ultimately someone tried to break into it and damaged both doors. Then it was junked. What a shame.
