I don't think Romanians, even the more right wing Romanians will cozy up to Russia. Romania in patricular have a bitter relationship with the former USSR, and even the Russian Empire. this bad blood runs old. But the far-right WILL try to sell it that way. They and a lot of people have a very selective interpretation of history and they will pretend that the robbery and dictatorships of the past brought by Moscow didn't really happen. But make no mistake about it, you can't be a patriot and pro-putin at the same time. The threat to the East is the last real threat to our development. The rest have all fallen: Habsburgs and Ottomans, but putin is still around.

There's also a bit of missing context. Voting in Romania is generally done by exclusion. You don't vote with AUR because you support them, you vote them because you hate them less than the others. People hated both PNL and PSD and then USR rose up. Afterwards they started hating USR too and now AUR is the new kid.

@@FiG044 The point is that a increasing number of Romanian citizens have become displeased with the EU and the Western countries, to the point where they are starting to think of breaking away like the UK did or just starting to act like Hungary. Not to mention that the growing idea of turning the EU into one big federal country is not something that Romania is too keen on. It's sad that the only party that voices these concerns is the AUR (which, from my points of view, despite what is being said in the media, is aligned with Russia). It's going to happen. Politicians in Romania have lost touch with the people altogether. The only ones who keep a dialog with the common people are AUR and what they're doing is just amplifying their fears in order to win votes. Bit of historical context. Russia has done immense harm to Romania post WW2 by essentially ripping apart Romanian territory and partly incorporating it in present Ukraine (parts of Basarabia, Snake Island), and partly forming independent Moldova. In all honesty Ukraine has done very little to accommodate Romanian minority in those areas, and as such prior to current Ukraine war the relationships between Romania and Ukraine were understandably very cold. Now with the war, there is significant support in Romania for Ukraine as both countries care to limit Russia’s influence in the region. I was personally very pleasantly surprised to meet and discover Ukrainian refugees living in Romania, and grow fond of some of the people I met. Romania has indeed a very large diaspora, I heard somewhere we are second in the world (probably as %). Most of these people are working in wester countries and adhering to western style of thinking. I have a hard time believing that a significant part of Romanians would support Russia…

Any union with Moldova must be done legally, peacefully and orderly. Everyone must agree with it of their own free will. Anything short of that must be rejected. I don't want parts of Moldova or Ukraine, I don't want to conquer anyone, this has never been our way. Plus, the parts which did belong to us and are now in Ukraine, 1. don't have any majority Romanian population and 2. Moscow did the partition, not Kyiv. There's a misunderstanding about left/right in Romania. While PSD and AUR seem like they're on opposite ends, they're actually much, much more similar. PSD while it's considered a "left" party, it's actually more conservative than anything, and AUR is ultra conservative. Also the problem is that AUR is actually making some very good points. Especially when it comes to Ukraine and the war. For example, the issue with the grain imports is a bit more nuanced: Ukraine was allowed to export their grains into Romania without any checks whatsoever, and without needing to adhere to any of the EU's quality standards, and what ended up happening was that Ukrainian grains got into Romania, but they were very low quality, some even suffering from pests and shit, and they were extremely cheap. So then these inferior shit grains made our local farmers LITERALLY waste megatons of grains because they couldn't sell it.

You're like an average person giving insights. You are right, but only on the surface. Russians don't want to attack the West; they pose no danger to the democracies in the EU. They have an issue with Ukraine, but it is much more complicated. Ukraine has their share of oppression towards Moldavians and Romanians. The fact that AUR does not want to help Ukraine is because it is a senseless war dragged out by the West with the purpose of holding Ukraine souveranity. The effect, on the other hand, is destabilising the region. Not wanting to help Ukraine sentiment in Romania is, in principle, the same reason as wanting to help Ukraine sentiment coming from the UK.

1. AUR has no chance of winning parliamentary elections in Romania against PSD. 2. Even if they do that, they would not have a majority in Parliament and a coalition will be formed against them. 3. Romania will never become Russia's ally. 4. AUR is not really pro Russia. 5. Their electorate will never be larger that 25%(note that during parliamentary elections only 40% of the people actually vote). 6. The parties that will enter Parliament next year will be: PSD probably around 30% PNL probably around 20% AUR probably around 20% USR probably around 12% UDMR(hungarian party) 6%. None of the other parties will enter a coalition with AUR. 7. Once every ten years we have a nationalist party like AUR who usually gets around 10-12% of the votes and then they slowly dissappear.

Yes, it's completely understandable, because in Romania now, as we speek, as a worker in a company you get like 400 net salary/month, while food is more expensive than in Western Europe. I say this because I know everyday. I was an engineer for almost 15 years in some companies and after all this experience this summer I decided to quit for the moment this career in Romania, because I earned like 1100 euro net, which is very little, having a family and 2 kids and having prices for food more expensive than in Germany for example. So I said fuck it!! I'm a truck driver now, and I'm earning 3x the money. 😊 It's somehow sad, but it is what it is.... Of course extremism is on the rise!!

It's rich to say the nationalist right had just recently been on the rise. In reality, our current ruling parties are nationalist, right-wing populist parties. It's been long since PSD had been an actual social democrat party, or PNL a national liberal. AUR are surely more to the right, but they are, in large, a byproduct of the hegemony PSD and PNL aimed (and achieved) to create, which in itself is a huge issue, to which AUR is obviously no real solution. Hence, the political left in Romania is basically dead, without adequate representation for now, and as the video said, the ruling coalition doesn't seem to have any intent of sliding towards the left in any capacity, but the opposite.

I'm from Romania and i would like to say that your report is quite accurate. Thank you for doing a good job. I can add a bit of depth for anyone who is interested. The coalition didn't do a good job in the past 5-6 years and Romania is facing some problems right now because of it. Plus the problems brought on by general bigger picture issues of the pandemic and war and so on. For example sinking the country into massive debt and inflation, or the problems in agriculture with grain and honey prices, just to name a few. Naturally people are angry and uncertain and this is where AUR comes in (they have been around for some time now, feeding on the discontent of the diaspora). They are trying to do and/or to say anything they can to present themselves as the solution, both for the bigger picture issues and the shameful incompetence of the current establishment, while also being openly and painfully obvious pro kremlin (their leaders where seen multiple times with russian "diplomats" and so on). It's pretty obvious what's going on here, a russian backed wedge trying to force itself into a substantial crack formed by justified anger and worry of the population. This being said, i wouldn't worry about them too much. In the sense that they won't get power in Romania, because people are more or less aware of what i said above and they won't gather that much support. The situation is not to be taken lightly though, but it's not dire yet. Funny part is that the coalition is so bad that it pushes people into AUR arms, in spite of them doing everything they can do be as repulsive as possible. Even so, the people in AUR are way to nasty and ripe with scandal and controversy to even be taken too seriously. Romanian society is aslo way too pro EU and west. The good part is, that they actually represent the very angry voices in Romania and their presence forces the current establishment to act in ways which are in our interest. Just by their strategy of transforming everything into a ping-pong game in which they say the opposite of whatever the coalition says, is benefiting us, specially when the subjects hits something on which people of both sides of the spectrum can agree upon. Like limiting daily allowed cash transaction to 2000 RON (400 euro) for example.

It's generally a good video, but a bit shallow (understandably so). The most important thing, that I think should've been emphasized, is that despite their names, PSD is very much socially conservative while PNL is more liberal (not too much tho). So if anything, AUR's populist influence could move PSD to be even more right wing regarding social issues, while PNL is in a bit of identity crisis right now. USR is not disenfranchised (yet), but they are slowly becoming quite unpopular, however their voter base is really distant from AUR's ideas, so that won't help them either. Lastly, UDMR is getting the 5% from the hungarian minority to keep them in parlament. I think PSD is going to win the most from this situation. They have a stable 25-35% voter base, and moderate conservatives who don't want either PNL or USR on power are more likely to vote for PSD rather than AUR (even if PSD shifts slightly to the right).

Also , today I bought mustard seeds and when I got home I took a look on the package and they were imported from Russia. Am I pro Russian too? In 2015 leftist media accused Russia of destroying a historical building because that building needed renovation. Now the leftist media accused the ones that renovated the building of being pro-Russian. Funny , eh ?

As a romanian I will tell you that never ever Romania will be Russia's ally . You don't know a thing of what this animosity is about ...and for so many hundreds of years. When you are a neighbour to Russia you will do what you can to protect yourself and what you can to survive. No. You don't know anything about the terror, the crimes, the pain, the torture caused for us unfortunatelly by Russia ... I say unfortunatelly because of it's great culture ... but no, romanians will never be friends with russians or allies. Nope. When 70 years ago 2 million people were killed by bolsevics (imprisonned and killed 90% of them) ... you can't forget something like that. Ok, after that comunism was installed but those 2 million were the intelectuals, priests, proffesors, students, doctors, enginneers etc ... Those days you were declared enemy of the party only if you were the son or the daughter of someone that had a bachelor degree ... No, is too soon to forget what happend in our country. If you think romanian comunism was from Romania you should read more history. After the 2nd world war Europe's split was decided on a restaurant table, on a napkin ... That was so simple to decide who lives in freedom and who dies under the comunism. And there were a lot of dead people. If you never heard of Aiud prison, Pitesti experiment prison you don't know a thing about Europe's recent history . So, once again, no. Never Romania will be an ally of Russia.

A nuance lost on this video's author is that the Ukrainians and Moldavians forbade Simion to enter their countries because of his documented connections with the Russians, not because of his unionism. There are other unionists who were actually given honorary positions in Moldova. A large section of Moldova's population, almost half, is unionist. Ukrainian Secret Services affirmed that they have proof Simion has ties with Russia.

So, Romania is Putin's next ally in Europe? To even think about this question proves that 1. one ignores everything Russia 2. one ignores everything about Europe and the EU politix 3. one ignores everything about Romania 4. one ignores everything about Russia, Europe, the Eu and Europe. Plus everything about the history of this places, their specifics and their particularities. As for this so-called analysis - learn Romanian and read some history.

Summary of this video - Video sponsored by "Too Long, the official TLDR newspaper" - Ukrainian President Zelensky visited Romania on October 10th to seek support for Ukraine's war effort. - Romania, traditionally pro-Ukraine, has provided military aid and established a training center for Ukrainian pilots. - Zelensky canceled a speech in front of the Romanian parliament due to anticipated protests by the ultra-nationalist group Aur. - Aur, meaning gold in Romanian, has gained popularity and is described as a far-right party with anti-EU and anti-NATO sentiments. - The party's surge is attributed to discontent with the political establishment and economic challenges in Romania. - Romania's political history involves frequent changes in leadership, with the current government facing economic difficulties and corruption scandals. - Aur's leader, George Simion, initially focused on the reunification of Moldova with Romania and later shifted the party's focus to the war in Ukraine. - Aur's rise is seen as part of a broader trend of right-wing nationalist parties gaining traction across Europe. - Simion has faced criticism for his anti-vaccination stance but has moderated some party rhetoric to broaden its appeal. - Despite Aur's increasing support, it is not likely to directly impact policy or unseat the current government in the near term. - The Romanian government announced a strategic partnership with Ukraine despite canceling Zelensky's speech. - Aur's growing popularity could indirectly influence mainstream political parties, pushing them to adopt more right-leaning policies. - The upcoming presidential elections in November show Aur polling third with 19%, behind independent candidate Maia Sandu. - If Aur continues to gain support, mainstream parties might adjust their policies to appeal to disenchanted voters. - The video concludes with a sponsorship plug for the TLDR newspaper and a 20% discount code for purchases.

PSD and PNL, since the legislative cycle that generated the mass pro EU protests and mass beatings of protesters thanks to PSD having an absolute majority alone, both have been continuing the same practices started since then, after the model of what Rusia did after the collapse of the USSR. The fact that Austria unjustifiably opposes our accession to the Schengen area will have the greatest influence on the increase in the number of voters of AUR supporters. This injustice towards Romania will have a devastating effect in the long term, and it seems that the EU will not be able to prevent this injustice, which makes it weak and divided. And so Romania, from a majority pro-European country, will become an anti-European country, fed up with all the sacrifices made and the lack of results it deserves.

I want to clarify something: AUR was formed out of the never ending dismissal of the politicians and the giant parties to take actions or even an opinion on problems in society both internal and external. This party jumps on every problem in society that career politicians avoid like the plague because they are too afraid to bring up. 1) The Hungarian minority have been continuously led by their politicians to isolate themselves more and more from their country. For example, the politicians of the Hungarian Minority region don't encourage their community to learn Romanian, just so they can stay isolated and not be integrated. Meanwhile in Hungary, the Romanian Minority have to learn Hungarian as Mandatory. So when he says he respects Hungary, he wants to be as authoritarian over the Hungarian Minority as Orban is on the Romanian minority. 2) Ukraine. Early on Zelenski in an attempt to forcefully integrate all the minorities in Ukraine, forbid the Romanian minority on the boarder with Romania to not be able to learn Romanian. No such thing was enforced on minorities in Romania. Lastly when, Romania accepted to help Ukraine, they started to sell their grain from Ukraine to Romanian companies and became a competitor to Romanian producers and were threatening their businesses. Basically, each time more cooler minds in Romania don't call out these problems, they keep giving ammunition to this howling extremist.

Idk what you heard but Hungarians in Romania have to learn romanian. The only difference between the romanians and hungarians is that the hungarian students have hungarian language and literature as a plus test and math, history etc. are in hungarian. The tests are the same they are just translated. In the local political representation such as city council the only time when hungarian can be used as the languege of the meeting if more than 50% of the representatives are hungarian and they specifically require it. The only thing that came close to far-right in Romania (albeit even that one is debatable) was the former PRM (Partidul Romania Mare or Greater Romanian Party). And the reason why I say debatable is because of the same characterization... socially conservative yet economically left-wing. It's so fascinating what you describe as "moderation" of positions: it really is just right-wing populists recognizing a fellow right-wing populist as a useful ally against EU mandates (Romania under AUR would basically become the replacement for PiS Poland) and support for the Israeli right-wing's projects is a classic move among right-wing anti-semites (and allows for AUR to be even more anti-Muslim). Anyway, I hope Romanians wake up to what AUR could become for them, and if they somehow become elected into government, that the EU will at the very least continue to hold up Romania's ascension to Schengen (as much as that's worth these days, sadly...). Rule of law and human rights must be protected in the EU especially.

The Western right wing (that is to say, the "Global North" of the EU, plus Canada, Australia, the USA) has a very large; possibly the most mainstream position, racist yet pro-Israel/non-antisemitic component. They consider jews, especially the Ashkenazi who are very highly represented among the western elite and intelligentsia (this is stated as a fact, not a conspiracy theory about how Jews rule the world, although this representation of no doubt contributes to how strong pro israel lobbying is) the best and brightest of Europeans. Isn't it schizophrenic to claim they are antisemitic but somehow pro Zionist? Why would this be, in your mind? Is it some sort of weird idea that if they back Israel's right wing settler colonialist government Jews will become more hated in the world and this will therefore give more ammunition to more pogroms?

an election as important as never before seen since 2000 or Iliescu's first term. Both events romanians failed, only once in an important electoral cycle people voted better before 2000.

Most interesting thing that happened during entire this turmoil over ukraine, is when orban of hungary, after attack on north stream, said: hungary and serbia will every attack on energy infrastucture treat as declaration of war, we are not germany, we are serious countries :)

I am Romanian and thoroughly follow what happens in our internal politics so I will add some details that will give everyone a broader of view of the situation. 1. The president of AUR, George Simion, was surprised as having relations with russian agents by the Ukrainian intelligence agencies. He also went straight to a pro russian politician from Romania after the elections from 2020 to discuss some matters privately. 2. One of the founders of AUR had contracts to reconstruct buildings în the Rrpublic of Moldova where the KGB functioned in the past. And their big raise on social platforms, mostly Facebook, was due to some shady financing. Hence they didn't appear overnight, their rise was planned way before. 3. The president allows everything that happens in terms of coruption, lies etc. He is bribed by his administration, which sometimes consisits of former members of the communist repressive intelligence agencies, with expensive holidays, gifts, other privileges and disguised bribes (none of his expenses were revealed in spite of numerous requests by journalists) 4. The governing coalition, at least the big players, are extatic at the thought of AUR growing in polls. That means that they can govern together without any problem and silence the opposition represented by USR (the Union Save Romania). The two parties said that they will never ever govern together and the president won with his promise of never letting that happen. Obviously it was all a big lie. 5. Remember the members of Trump administration recieving bribes to arrange meetings with other world leaders? The Biden adminstration is doing the same thing. Recently the Romanian PM went to Washington to discuss... What do you think? Hospitals, schools, infrastructurs, visas etc.? No, no, no and NO. THEY DISCUSSED ABOUT WEAPONS. Or should I entitle it: How to get away with everything by bribing left, right and center.

The democracy gave you the right to have such an opinion. During the communism times you could not say the same, you could not have a different opinion without suffering consequences. Democracy gave you the freedom to think for yourself to work for yourself and also gave you the right to be "stupid", if you chose so.

The graph showed AUR at about 20% where it seems to have plateaued. I don’t know how Romanian elections are decided but 20% hardly seems enough to form a government. Are there enough conservative parties in Romania to form a coalition government?
