I think the 5th fleet could be a really cool addition to the new canon sequel trilogy as a series on Disney plus. They could be retconned in as the ships that survived the destruction of Hosnian Prime and have to go around the galaxy to find surviving new republic forces while fighting the First Order Battlestar Galactica style.

If Disney wanted to make something awesome, they would have kept the Resistance as an underground commando group (with a better name) and made the Fifth Fleet her hammer. The Resistance finds threats and does the Rebellion's usual hit and run tactics, and the Fifth Fleet comes in for maximum devastation. Would have made the space battles a lot more awesome.

The K-Wing always struck me as a WH40K ship translated to the Star Wars setting. The thing's big, chonky and covered with guns, missiles and turrets. It would be right at home in a fighter fleet for the Imperium or even the Orks

The Fifth Fleet has some impressive accolades, defeating the Dushkan League, rolling up Antemeridian Sector and destroying the Reaper after sending Pellaeon into retreat at Celanon. General Etahn A'baht doesn't get enough credit as a commander, he's gone toe to toe with some of the best and still come out on top.

The Expanded Universe handles the evolution of the New Republic's navy so much better then the Disney canon, the New Republic fielding brand new super dreadnaughts less then a year after Endor is retarded even if they were made with pieces of Star Destroyers, the amount of Star Destroyers you would need to cannibalize just to build one would be insane.

@@Starsaber222 Not really because that was a product of The New Republic's weakness, if you look at he evolution of Imperial tech it is ironically far more efficient, for example if you look at the Tie Fighter, it follows a clear and logical progression based on the situation, the Tie Fighter to the TIE Interceptor, to the TIE Defender. The Empire had many flaws but its military was its greatest strength. The New Republic on the other hand while being less oppressive suffered from rampant corruption and political infighting, it was also so afraid of being seen as the new Empire that it seriously neglected its military organization and projection. Projects like the fifth fleet had to be literally forced through to get off the ground. This is perfectly consistent with the greater lore. It is also why the New Republic victory at Jakku in Disney Canon is so absurd. The Rebel fleet was mauled at Endor, I think they lost like two thirds of their fleet so unlike the Empire which still had hundreds of thousands of ships the Rebels only had less then a hundred and there is no way you go from a hundred ships to beating a galactic superpower militarily in only one year especially being as politically fractured as the New Republic.

@@Starsaber222 Hmm... look at our world's modern militaries, even as far back as WW2. Many planes, fighters, bombers, torpedo bombers, etc. were not replaced with ever new strike of the good idea fairy's wand, but were improved, updated, upgraded. You see the same in ground vehicles, deepwater naval vessels, even infantry weapons. New technology leads to upgrading existing tech as much as it brings new platforms into being. A polity is never rich enough to just throw away last year's jet fighters or all of their 3-year-old service rifles or tank hulls. But they can often afford to add better sensors, scopes, and reactive armor, respectively.

Honestly it handles the political aspect better too. In canon it seems like the majority of the galaxy was just like “yeah sure the new republic is in charge now” right after Endor. But of course there’d be loyalists holding on to power. In legends the empire crumbles still but there’s large powerful chunks of “imperial power” still around to bother the New Republic. It’s much less black and white like canon.

The New Republic 5th fleets gets from me (on star wars standards, of course) A+ for fleet composition B+ for aestethics (I love the Nebula but other ships bring the rating down for me) C for combat effectiveness (lack of numbers bring this down) ... And a flat F for naming conventions (Defender)

Regarding C: , You can Compare this fleet to Death squadron in terms of Functioning Fifth fleet is a Independent Roving Mobile Quick reactionary Force , and it is 500 CAPITAL SHIP strong at its peak Not 500 ships in total ,it is 500 Capital ships from Heavy cruiser to super star destroyer and star defender classes ,not including the frigates ,Corvettes and support craft , it isn't locked to a Specific area , the 1st to 4th fleets are assigned to 4 parts of the New republic Space with command centres around Kasshyk Bothuwei Coruscant and one more I think , 5th fleet meanwhile is mobile , responding to Any possible conflicts or disputed areas and Reinforceing local defences or securing tactical and strategic points of interests like Shipyard world's etc ,

If everything was "perfect" that would really break immersion for me, and be quite boring, I like that there are shortcomings. Additionally is quite realistic. The state of the New Republic reminds of the state of many European Countries, that have underinvested in defense thanks to the peace dividend after the cold war. They have the quality, but not the quantity. Altough the New Republic did it first ;)

Day twenty one of asking Eck my question: #AskEck Why do you think the pirates kept grogu, there was quite obviously a bounty on him considering all the hunters with tracking fobes and I doubt they wouldn't have known about it, so we're actually protecting him. My theory is that after he was saved after the purge, so senator or rebel group hired these pirates to protect him, but was eventually captured by the empire or forgot about grogu, (why he was never given to the new republic after the war), and the pirates not knowing he was a jedi just kept and raised him till mando showed up, killed them and stole their kid.

The biggest difference I see with the later Republic designs compared to earlier Imperial designs is they weren't designed to carry and support a fully equipped army. I dont remember a single book where a new republic warship carried a sizeable landing force, they usually relied on transports and corvettes like the Rebel Alliance did.

Since the CR90 is the Rebel equivalent of Gozanti Honestly There should've been New Republic CR90 dedicated Combat corvette variants , there were the Sundered heart , Night Caller , farstar , and the fan made CR110 Tantara Corvette variants , a standard 12 starfighter + 4 Gunship assault shuttles and 4 Repulsor tanks , some troopers , 1 heavy turbolaser\ion cannon spinal , some torpedoes or missiles batteries , and 8-10 quad laser Cannons (half of Lancer lasers)

Haven't other sci-fi works like Mass Effect have similarly important fleets with the very same number for some reason that may be chalked up as "it's as cool as having a Delta Squad in Gears of War/Republic Commando/XCOM"? For every moment of grim awesomeness the books have, there's at least one missed opportunity that may justify an excellent rewrite/adaptation of the stuff someday.

US Navy 5th fleet was kind of important in defeat of Japanese during WW2. Also it was reactivated in the 90's, so it's possible that it was name that people were familiar with. Plus it does sound cool even without context.

I really gotta find my copies of Black Fleet Crisis, the og ones. Hey we got the E-Wing in Ahsoka, maybe there'll be some more adapted to live action in the future. The Nebula's cool, but the K-Wing intrigues me, I want to see that in action. It's design reminds me of one of the fighters from the first two Wing Commander games, I guess that would've been around the same time. If anyone reading likes the original X-Wing or Tie Fighter games, you'll like Wing Commander. Yeah, the other ship designs are... good to know many have been retconned. I get what they were trying to do by not recycling the same design language, but that ain't it.

Well I mean it was pretty much comprised solely off brand new designs prototype designs that utilized the most advanced technology and weapons available to the new republic. Where as the rest of the new republics navy was pretty standardized. And unlike the rest of the navy the 5th fleet was made up of purpose built warships.

#askeck recently thought about this due to our advancements in AI technology in the modern world. I understand that droids in the Star Wars are essentially A.I. which makes sense. My question is, why are there seemingly no sense of A.I. integration directly into the ships of the Star Wars universe? This question is more specifically at capital ships or ships that cannot fit astromechs. I feel a onboad ship A.I. could monitor and give feedback for systems like shields, weapons and even the engines to pilots or crews. Giving them a tactical advantage or at least increasing survivability of a fighter pilot in a battle.

Okay, wait… Google tells me that the Empire had 25,000 Star Destroyers. Plus whatever smaller capital ships. And the New Republic’s 5th fleet had… 500. And sure, there are the four defensive fleets. And the Tarkin Doctrine had the empire drastically overbuilding their military. But Tarkin was aiming for one ISD per star system, plus some floaters like the Endor fleet, and multiple ISDs at Scarif. But I’ll spitball 20,000 inhabited star systems in the empire, which covered the entire galaxy, except for the Unknown Region. 20k systems is a lot, right? No. It’s not a lot. Earth is in the Orion Spur… kind of a small strip of stars that connect two of the actual spiral arms. It’s around 10k light years long, and there are around 600,000 stars just in the Orion Spur. Futurists figure the Earth could support around 1 Trillion people. Not FIT them, with food being grown elsewhere and flown in… support them, including all the food they eat. Oddly enough, the limiting factor is heat. 1T people need homes, infrastructure, power grids, etc. 1T people on Earth still leaves a lot of empty space. But while our stuff can dump waste heat into the atmosphere, the planet as a whole has to emit IR radiation into the void of space. With the Empire, and then the New Republic, being 20k inhabited systems, with even half a trillion people on each one… a quick-response task force of 100 capital ships is functionally. Landon’s fleet from Ep IX would be less than one planet. That’s more like how many ships they could pull from one planet without the First Order noticing a bunch of ships missing. Yeah, I get it… science fantasy, not science fiction. Space wizards are real, and bombers can drop bombs in spaces where “down” doesn’t apply. But still.

From how I usually assume it, @@goatkiller666 - the New Republic has five strategic, rapid response fleets, which usually max out at 500 to 520 ships. Supporting them will be around 700 to 800 SECTOR fleets, of varying possible size, but often with at least 8 star cruiser ships of MC80 scale, likely, and dozens of escorts, contributed by local worlds and governments. So that's a much larger force. Meanwhile, if the Empire had 1,624 ships per sector (which is probably not typical everywhere) then they field up to 1.663 million or so total warships by default. Also, the Empire has between 12 million to fifty million worlds generally - so it's very unlikely they could field one ISD per world. Or even one Gladiator-class per world - or even one escort frigate, maybe.

The NU class ships got shafted so hard by their original designs. Black Fleet was such a cool saga, but holy hell the designs were such hot garbage. I remember one of the Dusk Leagues ships were literally just massive orbs with engines.

K-wings always seemed a bit dumb to me. Like, you literally built the b-wing for the same purpose and it does the job more than fine. Or at least it would if writers didn't decide to screw it over. Instead somehow we have y-wings which were outdated and approaching useless death trap level bad back in the Yavin days still being used decades later. But a more maneuverable, more durable, and better armed anti-capital-ship b-wing is somehow... bad. There is literally nothing about the k-wing that makes it better. Sure, you get a few more missiles/bombs, but the thing is no faster, no more maneuverable, IS a bigger target, and is not so significantly more durable that it makes up for being a larger target. Plus it's weapon advantages lie exclusively in the expendables (missile/bomb) department whereas b-wings arguably have better sustained threat via canons and ions. When x-wings are repeatedly limited on how many proton torpedo's they're allowed to use and sometimes told they can't "waste" them against mere starfighters, this only makes the b-wing sound even better than some k-wing where you can only equip it with 2/3 it's max missile capacity due to supply limitations.
